Welcome!

Most everyone seemed happy to see the end of 2022 and the beginning of another year! Let’s try it again and see if it’s any better! For North Dakotans, last Spring was a doozy. The late Spring blizzards were devastating to many ranchers across the state, followed by the mud from all the snow and spring rains and then the water shut off and caused a drought in many areas. Then to top it off, our winter started again in early November! Crazy how we could go from being so saturated to so dry within a few months. In the end, in our area, we were thankful for the moisture we did receive in the Spring as it carried us through the summer for our crops and our grass. I’m hoping we’ll also see a silver lining for the blizzards we’ve had this winter. Time will tell. For now, though, we remain the eternal optimists and just keep plugging along!

The late Spring, made for a late Fall and the early winter made for a lot of challenges in getting our bull sale catalog put together! Feels like we’ve been chasing our tails all year! It sure was a struggle to get pictures of the bulls this year, so we don’t have as many photos in the catalog this year and many of our ads didn’t even have any bulls pictured.

On top of the weather not cooperating, Erika and Tyler had their first child on December 9th! It’s a girl and her name is Eleanor Lannoye. Everyone is doing well, but it’s been a little extra busy around here this year!

We’re looking forward to showcasing the bulls and bred heifers again! We have some exciting new sire groups and some of the familiar ones! Feel free to come to ranch before the sale and look through them on your own schedule. If you can’t make it, please call Bryan or Erika to help you in your selections. SALE FORMAT

The cattle will sell by video on sale day. All the bulls and heifers will be penned next to the sale barn by 9 am on sale day and will stay in those pens throughout the sale.

TRUCKING

We will try to deliver the bulls to the buyer’s farm, or we will assist buyers in coordinating loads and make the most economical trucking arrangements possible. All the bred heifers must be picked up on sale day or have trucking arrangements made soon after since they will be close to calving. For assistance with trucking arrangements, contact Erika.

INSURANCE

We can keep the bulls at home for no charge until April 1, but we recommend purchasing insurance.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

• We guarantee all bulls to be breeders and we reserve the right to test any bull in question as a non-breeder for a reasonable amount of time before making an adjustment. And, if the bull is declared a sound breeder by a competent veterinarian, he will be returned to the buyer. In case an adjustment is required, it will be made with a replacement of equal value to animal in question, credit on purchase of another animal, or return of purchase price.

• Each animal becomes property and therefore is also the risk of the purchaser after it is sold. We guarantee the cattle to be healthy sale day.

• For those who cannot attend the sale, we will honor a telephone order and guarantee your phone purchase to meet your request when inspected personally by you.

• Certificates of registry will be supplied by the seller.

• All cattle sell under terms and conditions of the American Simmental Association and will be available in the office on sale day by request.

• We reserve the right to collect 100 units of semen on any bull in the sale for in-herd use only. The collection would be at our expense and buyer’s convenience. Each bull will sell to the buyer with 100% ownership opportunity.

Understanding the Data

WHY USE EPDS?

We have included all the data we can for each animal in this catalog, but we strongly recommend using the EPDs the most. EPDs allow a buyer to compare the animals across the breed. If you look at the actual data of an animal, it only tells you how they compare in that particular herd. By using the EPDs, you can compare them across herds and within herds more accurately.

We’ve formatted our lot boxes to include the percentile ranking for each trait if they rank within the top 50% of the breed. This will make it easier to evaluate each animal.

CALVING EASE EPD

Please understand the CE EPD is actually heifer calving ease. This number tells you how those bulls will calve on heifers - % unassisted compared to the other bulls on heifers. For example: If Bull A has a CE EPD of 10 and Bull B has a CE EPD of 5, Bull A will have 5% more unassisted births than Bull B when used on heifers. If you are going to use the bull for cows, you do not need to have that number as high.

GENOMIC EPDS

There are several genomic tests available. The GGP 100K test qualifies the animals for AI sires and donor cows and tests for parentage. The results are incorporated in to the EPDs through the single-step system (BOLT) and increases the accuracy for each trait.

All the bulls and heifers in the offering have been GGP 100K tested and the resulting EPDs are in the catalog. If any bulls will be used in an AI program, they are already qualified as an AI sire.

DILUTION GENE (DL)

All the red animals in this sale are non-diluted (DLF). DLF means they are free of the dilution gene. Grey calves will not result from any of these animals when bred to black animals.

OH GENETIC TRAIT

OH or Oculocutaneous Hypopigmentation is a cosmetic genetic trait affecting Simmental cattle. It is a recessive trait so it is only possible from the mating of two carriers. It is non-lethal and doesn’t affect performance of the animal, but the animals will have “white-colored” eyes and/or a diluted hair coat. The most popular recent ancestor that is the carrier is PVF-BF BF26 Black Joker. We have tested everything in our herd that could possibly be a carrier and have identified the ones in this sale as either OHF (Free) or OHC (Carrier).

OHC means that animal carries the gene. If mated with other carriers, there is a possibility to see the trait. If not mated to carriers, you will not see the trait, but may pass the carrier gene to some of the progeny.

DD GENETIC CONDITION

Developmental Duplication (DD) is a genetic condition where the affected calves frequently develop extra body parts (often limbs), a condition called polymelia. This is a non-lethal, recessive trait, so the animal needs to have both genes for it to show signs. If you have a carrier (DDC), you do not want to mate that animal to another carrier animal.

The bulls were fed a TMR ration formulated by Tim Clark of Hubbard Feeds. Our ration is formulated on a moderate level of energy that’s appropriate for the genetic type and the northern environment in order to develop bulls for breeding. We worked the bulls up to a 48 Mcal ration and kept them at that level during the test period. Our trace mineral program is designed to improve structural integrity, foot quality and immune function. They are on a high-end supplement program. Our average ADG for the 2023 sale bulls was 3.4 on a 110day test.

BVD AND JOHNE’S STATUS

All animals in the herd tested negative for BVD. We follow the state’s guidelines for Johne’s Testing and have maintained our Johne’s Status.

HOMOZYGOUS BLACK / HOMOZYGOUS POLLED PUREBRED SIMMENTAL

Manifesto was the $67,000 bull from the Bichler Simmental Sale in 2019. He is owned by LCDR Simmental and Bichler Simmental. We loved Manifesto when he sold and tried hard to own him. We AI’d heavily to him and we love the calves, as he proved to be a performance bull. The bulls are stout with thick tops and great muscle shape. They are super gentle and laid back and the feet look excellent at this point. Look to the Manifesto’s to add performance, docility, and soundness into your herd. The daughters look to be good also! Sons sell as Lots 1 – 8 in the Purebred section and Lots 30 – 37 in the ¾ SimAngus section and daughters sell as Lots 116 - 118.

SIMMENTAL 3/8 ANGUS

Erika and Bryan purchased 940G together at the ND State Simmental Sale in 2020 from Todd Finke and she immediately went into the donor pen. She is one of the most attractive females in our herd and she has proven she can produce! The flush by Manifesto is impressive and the full-sib daughters in the replacement pen are phenomenal! Her first calf she had naturally is also in the sale as Lot 141. Her sons sell as Lots 1 – 4. We are excited for the future of this female!

Our first year’s calves from using Top Shelf in our AI program. Top Shelf was raised by Lassle Ranch, Glendive, MT and sold to Begger’s Diamond V Ranch, Wibaux at their 2019 sale. We’ve noticed great calves by him at their sales the past few years, so we used him in our ET and AI programs. They are stylish, yet powerful bulls and a total outcross pedigree for our program. We mated him to our ½ SimAngus cows, so all the sons in our sale are still ½ SimAngus. Sons sell as Lots 11 - 14.

Accomplishment 003 was used in our AI program and is owned by Wendel Livestock of LaMoure, ND. He is an Accomplishment 720F son they kept out of their sale for themselves and agreed to sell us some semen on him! We used him in our ET program and AI and the calves are very impressive. He is also a paternal brother to our herd bull we purchased from Wendel’s in 2021, WL Accomplishment 053. The EPD profile on 003 is excellent all the way across and the calves are super functional, stylish with great dispositions. The 053 bull was only used in the pasture, so many of his calves are later born, but they are put together so well. He calved super on heifers and was also used on some highperformance cows. He has a great disposition and his calves are the same. Sons of 003 sell as Lots 22 – 24 and sons of 053 sell as Lots 25 - 26.

HOMOZYGOUS BLACK / HOMOZYGOUS POLLED PUREBRED SIMMENTAL This is our 4th calf crop by Colorado and we still love them. He is owned by Mike Traxinger, SD. He works perfect on heifers and high-performance cows. Not only do they calve easy, but they are stylish, deep bodied and have adequate thickness. Plus, we’ve found out that we love his daughters – they are easy fleshing, super to deal with and have beautiful udders! His EPD profile is well-balanced all the way across. He works well in combination with the power females in our herd. Sons sell as Lots 46 – 52 and his daughters sell as Lots 123 - 125.

Black Purebred Bulls

Campbell is owned by Nelson Livestock of Wibaux, MT and we’ve utilized a little in our AI program the past few years. He was raised by Campbell Livestock of Colorado. Even though we haven’t had very many calves by him each year, they usually end up making the sale. He’s a performance bull that adds frame and length to his calves. He also ranks in the top 10% for marbling. His sons this year are a set of twins who will definitely add performance. Sons sell as Lots 53 & 54.

Full Figures works well on heifers and high-performance cows and puts such great dispositions on his calves that this is the 3rd calf crop we have had by him. One of his first sons selling here sold to Lazy C Diamond, KS Net Income, and you’ll see his calves selling this year for them. So far, the feet look excellent on his progeny, and he still puts an attractive phenotype with plenty of muscle in more of a calving ease package. Full Figures is heterozygous black, so you’ll also find sons in the red bull pen. Sons sell as Lots 55 - 57 and 76 - 77 in the Red Section.

Over was our selection from the Doll Farms sale in 2021 as an outcross performance bull for us! We are so happy with how he’s done for us! He has 9 sons in this year’s sale, and we are sure you will be impressed with them! For a performance bull, he still maintains a moderate birth weight and adds carcass value. He stands on a good solid foot with good depth of heel and a good angle, so we are not foreseeing feet problems. Sons sell as Lots 63 – 71.

Elsie is a daughter of KS Penny X395 and ShamWow! We have a few of those daughters in our herd and they all rise to the top each year with their calves. In fact, a full sister to her, KS Emme E845, has two ET sons and a daughter in this sale also. Last year, Elsie’s ET sons topped our sale with her Vanderbilt flush. There is also a full sister in the Bichler Simmental program, KS Zada. Elsie has a good udder, a super disposition, and great feet and structure. She seems to click with every mating we throw at her! NON-DILUTED RED / HOMOZYGOUS POLLED PUREBRED SIMMENTAL Roundup was the $65,000 at the Bulls of the Big Sky sale in 2021 selling to Kunkel Simmentals. We used him in our AI program. Roundup is a performance sire with a different pedigree for most. There are 4 sons in our sale this year. Sons sell as Lots 72 – 75.

There aren’t very many red bulls by Full Figures this year in the sale, but the ones who are here are good! Since he is heterozygous black, he only gets used in rare occasions, but we should use him more as we are so impressed every year! Full Figures puts amazing dispositions on his calves and great feet! They also calve easy and still grow! These two bulls in the red section are outcross pedigrees to most and could be herd sire material! Red sons sell as Lots 76 & 77, but you will also find three heterozygous black sons in the Purebred Black section – Lots 55 – 57.

POLLED PUREBRED SIMMENTAL

We purchased Future from Ashworth Farm in Saskatchewan in 2020 and his semen rights are owned by Bouchard Livestock. This is his 2nd calf crop to sell for us and this year he has daughters in the sale too. He was injured last year and had to be put down preventing us from getting an updated photo of him, which is too bad since he looked amazing. He was one of the easiest bulls to work with and had very good feet. His sons and daughters in this sale are very impressive and provide an outcross pedigree to most. Sons sell as Lots 78 - 82 and daughters sell as Lots 115 & 168 - 173.

Hard Rock was the high-selling Bulletproof son at the G&D Simmental Sale in 2019 for $27,000 and is no stranger to this sale as his sons have sold very well the past 3 years! Hard Rock is a performance sire. His calves have a ton of power and are structurally sound and have excellent feet. Outcross performance pedigree here. Sons sell as Lots 86 - 88. Baylor sold in our 2020 sale to Ben Stroh of Tappen and we used him in our AI program in the past, but we purchased him back last year and used him in our pasture this past summer. Baylor’s dam is KS Alivia A977, who is also the dam of KS Outburst and has a son in this sale by Full Figures that is very impressive. The maternal side of this pedigree is very consistent! Baylor adds performance in a moderate birth weight, has an excellent foot, and often puts the dark, cherry red color in his calves. Bull Buyer’s Quick Guide to ASA EPDs and $ Indexes

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs):

EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purposesire scenario. (See $ Indexes for more details.)

Back Fat (BF): Inches of carcass backfat at 475 days.

Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.

Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.

Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight at 475 days.

Docility (DOC): Percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile).

Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.

Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

Marbling (MRB): Carcass marbling score at 475 days.

Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of carcass ribeye at 475 days.

Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at six years of age.

Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See TI for more details.)

Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a rib-eye steak.

Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.

Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.

Yield Grade (YG): Carcass yield grade score at 475 days.

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide pieces of the economic puzzle. This is where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on integrated commercial production. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you are keeping replacements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr.=$6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.
