NIGERIAN CONTEXT
What is postpartum haemorrhage ?
Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is defined as excessive bleeding following childbirth
If PPH is not controlled, it can cause death within two hours after bleeding starts
Every year 150,000 women die from PPH – most of these women are in low income countries
Poor, rural women who deliver at home are at greater risk for PPH
Generation Initiative for Women and Youth Network (GIWYN)
GIWYN experience to increase availability, accessibility, and use of misoprostol for prevention and treatment of PPH – including ensuring pregnant/labouring women have misoprostol on hand to take.
Self-Administration Of Misoprostol For Prevention And Treatment Of PPh
Self-care interventions
Selfcare Intervention are evidence-based, quality drugs, devices, diagnostics and/or digital products which includes Misoprostol that can be provided fully or partially outside of formal health services and can be used with or without the direct supervision of health care personnel
Justification Of the Strategy
• Safe with few report of incorrect use
• Increases coverage of uterotonic use for postpartum haemorrhage prevention in remote and hard-to-reach areas where no skilled health personnel can attend
Considerations for Success for Self-Administration of Prevention of PPH
Information and support
• Supportive health system –
• Quality products –
• Policy and regulatory frameworks –
Enabling access to Sef Care
Considerations for success for self-management of PPH
INFORMATION AND SUPPORT – INDIVIDUALS MUST BE PROVIDED WITH CLEAR INFORMATION RELATED TO SELF-MANAGEMENT. COUNSELLING SHOULD BE AVAILABLE WHEN DESIRED.
• SUPPORTIVE HEALTH SYSTEM – SELF MANAGEMENT APPROACHES REQUIRE READY ACCESS TO INFORMATION OR SUPPORT BY A TRAINED PROVIDER/FACILITY, WHERE DESIRED OR NEEDED.
