eproductive efficiency of the cow herd is the single largest determinant of profitability of the cow herd. There are countless factors that play a role in reproductive success with a few, like weather, beyond our control. Nutrition plays a very significant role in reproductive success and is one factor that must be planned and executed on a year round basis. While a nutrition program must be balanced and encompass all aspects of meeting a cowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s requirements for optimizing production, in respect to impact on reproduction, much emphasis is given to energy and mineral nutrition.

Energy status and reserves of the cow often are the first limiting nutritional factor in reproductive success and, thus, receives considerable attention. Body condition score (BCS) is an indicator of energy status in a cow and is used as a barometer to determine whether plane of nutrition is adequate. It is well documented that cows calving with a BCS of 4 versus BCS of 6 have delayed return to estrus and overall lower pregnancy rates. Considering a cow must become pregnant approximately 83 days after she calves to maintain a 365 day calving interval, any delays in return to estrus hinder breeding success. Keep in mind, if a cow is not cycling there is little hope of her becoming pregnant.

Body condition score becomes even more critical when dealing with first calf heifers as they are still growing as well as raising a calf and preparing to rebreed. Calving heifers in a BCS of less than 6 can be detrimental to getting these young females rebred. Some producers may intentionally calve heifers in a lower BCS in attempt to lower calf birth weight. This is a risky practice; as studies have shown that, while birth weight may be slightly reduced, dystocia is actually increased and subsequent pregnancy rates are reduced. Mineral nutrition also receives a lot of attention, especially around breeding season, and rightfully so as proper mineral nutrition is vital not

only to reproductive performance, but also animal performance in general. However, mineral nutrition is complex and one of the least understood areas of animal nutrition. Required minerals are broken into macro and micro (trace) minerals, each of equal importance although needed in different quantities. Macro minerals (such as calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, potassium, sulfur and salt) all play vital roles in metabolic function. Zinc, copper, manganese and selenium are generally the trace minerals of concern in terms of potential deficiencies. In addition to inclusion levels, it is important to keep ratios of minerals in balance. Elevating one trace mineral without considering

levels of other minerals can, in fact, create deficiencies, imbalances and suppressed trace mineral status in the animal. Trace mineral form is also essential in evaluating a supplementation program. The bioavailability of a mineral or the ability of an animal to absorb and use the mineral is dependent upon the form of the trace mineral. For example, copper chloride and copper sulfate have relatively good bioavailability; however, copper oxide is basically unavailable to the animal. Therefore, a copper guarantee on a mineral tag supplied by copper oxide is effectively useless to the animal. The use of chelated or organic trace minerals may be warranted in situations of suspect trace mineral status or in areas with

potential antagonistic affects. Elevated levels of sulfur, iron and molybdenum can tie up other minerals, rendering them unavailable to the animal. Contrary to popular belief, cattle do not consume mineral based on need, rather salt is the major driver of consumption. Choosing a mineral program with consistent consumption which is balanced for your region is a crucial combination for your breeding plan. A year round nutritional program should be a key component to your breeding plan. Planning ahead, having your cows in proper condition and nutritionally sound will help you realize success next breeding season. ď Ž

Warm the gun prior to placing the semen straw inside.

After the insemination straw is loaded into the insemination gun, make a clean cut (straight cut for ¼ ml straws or angled cut for ½ ml straws) one-quarter inch from the end of the gun.

Depending on gun type, straw may be cut before loading gun.

Raise canister just high enough to grasp the top of the cane with a tweezers – canister should be held below the frost line. Do NOT allow canister or cane to remain in tank neck for more than eight seconds.

Place the sheath over the insemination gun, seat the straw in the sheath tip and secure it into place.

insemination gun by pushing the plunger until semen is moved to the end of the sheath.

Enter the rectum by forming a cone with your fingers. Thoroughly clean the rectum of manure and check the reproductive tract for abnormal conditions.

Clean manure from vulva and the underside of arm with a paper towel.

Gently, smoothly pass the gun through the vagina to the opening of the cervical canal – the cervical os. Funnel gun tip into cervical os.

Firmly hold cervix. Hold shoulder of gun between ring and middle fingers. Place right fingers against left arm to ensure gun is not pulled back into cervix during semen deposit.

cervix ahead of gun tip. Manipulate cervical folds to allow gun to pass. Place index finger at uterine end of cervix. Move gun tip forward to index finger.

17 Concentrate

on accurate semen placement. Be certain the gun tip is not caught in a thin area between cervical rings or is too deep into uterus.

utting it all together are the words that best describes the essence of the Quality Beef by the Numbers program. In these challenging times, connecting all aspects of the beef industry from birth to the consumer becomes increasingly important. We find ourselves in an era of new technology with tools that offer the potential to significantly increase profit. Access to and implementation of these technologies becomes important to the long-term survivability of producers. As a lifetime cattle producer, I’ve never been more excited about our industry. What’s the exciting part? The easy answer is the production, marketing and analysis tools available to us today. Fixed-time artificial insemination (A.I.), EPDs, grid marketing, performance records and the ability to apply an economic analysis of these practices in your herd, is what the Quality Beef by the Numbers program is all about. Fixed time A.I., can you believe it? I can sit down now and schedule the exact date and time that I will inseminate my herd next year, and in doing so, realistically expect to get 55 to 65% or more of my herd bred on a single day to the best bulls in the world. My records document that when I account for the steps involved in implementing the fixed-time A.I.

The table below illustrates this point. Tier one heifers in the Show-Me-Select program are heifers that meet all the minimum requirements for the program. Tier two heifers meet these same requirements, but in addition are sired by high accuracy A.I. sires for traits that include: calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, weaning weight, carcass weight and marbling. You don’t have to ponder very long to determine which animal you want to replicate. As producers, we have a strong tendency to look at and select for performance. Those are huge players when it comes to profit. However, in selecting for profit we must be able to link together all the various phases in the beef production chain. In order to do that we need to be able to answer a series of basic questions.

Do you know: • The average calving intervals on your individual cows? • The weaning weights and weaning values of each individual cow? • The lifetime production and economic records on individual cows? • The number of calves sired by individual bulls and their value? • The quality grade and value of what you produce on an individual animal basis? • The individual cow’s production value measured in dollars? • Which cow is the most or least profitable in your forage system? • Are you producing what the consumer is demanding? These are but a few of the questions the Quality Beef by the Numbers program will help you answer. It’s time we as an industry begin thinking more of our cows than merely by-products of land ownership, and instead begin adopting on-the-shelf technologies that can help all of us make more money. 

OBJECTIVES • Support the adoption of reproductive and genetic technologies that will add value to beef cattle produced and marketed in the U.S. • Provide access to marketing grids that reward producers of high quality cattle. • Provide beef producers with access to a comprehensive data base that will support improvements in management and marketing of cattle from conception to harvest.

PROGRAM FEES • Participating farms and ranches will pay $300 each calendar year for membership in the program. Fees are to be paid prior to the time cattle are shipped to participating feed yards. • A per head fee will be collected to ensure data retrieval and will be based on terms of ownership. Fees will be subtracted from the final producer payouts.

OWNERSHIP • Cattle feeding partners will offer $40 for A.I. sired or $20 for natural service sired calves on a per head basis over the negotiated price for the portion of the animals the feed yard purchases. Additionally weigh up and slides will be part of the negotiated price and sales terms. • Outright sales of cattle will be negotiated with participating feed yards.

Semen Handling Checklist Store the liquid nitrogen (LN2) tank in a location that allows you to see clearly into the neck tube and is dust-free and dry. Measure LN2 weekly; level should not drop below 3 inches (8 cm.). Maintain an accurate semen inventory to lessen the risk of semen exposure. Raise the canister just high enough to grasp the top of the cane with tweezers – canister should be held below the frost line (Fig. 1). To maintain semen quality, do not allow the canister or cane to remain in the raised portion in the neck tube for more than 8 seconds. G enex semen can be thawed two different ways: Pocket Thaw™ or warm water thaw. If using Pocket Thaw, place the straw in a paper towel and place it in your shirt pocket to thaw for 2 to 3 minutes. If using warm water thaw, place the straw immediately in a warm water bath, at a temperature of 90-98 degrees Fahrenheit (32-36 degrees Celsius) for a minimum of 40 seconds.

Semen should be placed into the cow as quickly as possible (within 15 minutes after it is removed from the tank). The straw should be handled by the tweezers, not the fingers. To protect the thawed semen, place the insemination straw into a folded paper towel. Dry the straw and check for proper sire identification before loading the gun. Note: Load only one gun at a time. Prepare removal of sheath through a small hole at the corner of the sheath package.

Warm the gun prior to placing the insemination straw inside. After the insemination straw is loaded into the insemination gun, make a clean cut (straight cut for ¼ ml straws or angled cut for ½ ml straws) one-quarter inch from the end of the gun. Wipe the cutting edge of the scissors with a paper towel, to prevent future straw contamination. Place the sheath over the insemination gun, seat the straw in the sheath tip and secure it into place (Fig. 2). Prime the insemination gun by pushing the plunger until semen is moved to the end of the sheath (Fig. 3). Place the loaded insemination gun in a clean plastic glove and then inside your clothing to transport to the cow.

EPD tERMINOLOGY EPD: Expected Progeny Difference – The expected differences in performance of a sire’s progeny when compared to the average progeny of all sires evaluated within the breed. Based on actual performance, progeny performance and relatives’ performance. ACC: Accuracy – The reliability placed on the EPD. CE, CED: Calving Ease Direct – The difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first–calf heifers. BW: Birth Weight –The birth weights of a bull’s progeny when compared to the breed average, in pounds. WW: Weaning Weight – The adjusted weaning weights of a bull’s progeny when compared to the breed average, in pounds. YW: Yearling Weight – The adjusted yearling weights of a bull’s progeny when compared to breed average, in pounds. RADG: Residual Average Daily Gain (Angus) – The adjusted amount of post weaning gain in future progeny, in pounds, given a constant amount of feed consumed. SCR, SC: Scrotal Circumference (Angus, Charolais, Hereford) – The adjusted yearling scrotal circumferences of a bull’s progeny when compared to breed average, in centimeters. DOC (Angus) – The difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. CETM, CEM, MCE: Calving Ease Total Maternal, Calving Ease Maternal, Maternal Calving Ease – The difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first–calf daughters. Milk, MM: Maternal Milk – The amount of pre–weaning performance gained by calves which can be attributed to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters, expressed in pounds of calf. TM, MWW: Total Maternal, Maternal Weaning Weight (Red Angus, Simmental, Charolais) – Measure of a sire’s ability to transmit milk production and growth rate through his daughters. Predicts the weaning weight of a sire’s daughters’ calves. Equal to his milk EPD plus half his WW EPD. M&G: Maternal Milk & Growth (Hereford) – The Milk EPD plus half the WW EPD. A sire’s M&G EPD reflects what he is expected to transmit to his daughters for a combination of growth genetics and maternal production. ME: Maintenance Energy (Red Angus) – Differences in mature cow maintenance energy requirements. Expressed as megacalories per month. HPG, HP: Heifer Pregnancy (Red Angus, Angus) – Differences in percent probability of female progeny conceiving to calve as 2-year-olds; a more accurate measurement than her sire’s or paternal brothers’ scrotal circumference. MkH: Milking Herds (Angus) – Indicates the number of herds from which daughters are reported. MkD: Milking Daughters (Angus) – Reflects the number of daughters having progeny weaning weight records included in the analysis. MW: Mature Weight (Angus) – A predictor of the difference in mature weight of a sire’s daughters compared to the daughters of other sires, expressed in pounds. MH: Mature Height (Angus) – A predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires, expressed in inches.

STAY: Stayability (Red Angus, Simmental) – Differences in percent probability of daughters staying productive past the age of six. CW: Carcass Weight (Angus, Simmental, Charolais, Red Angus) – The adjusted carcass weights of a sire’s progeny, expressed in pounds. MB, MARB, IMF: Marbling – A predictor of the difference in a sire’s progeny for percent marbling score or percent intramuscular fat in the ribeye muscle compared to other sires. YG: Yield Grade (Simmental) – Expressed as a deviation of Yield Grade units where negative values are desirable. REA, RE: Ribeye Area – Adjusted ribeye area of a sire’s progeny, measured in square inches. FAT, BF: Back Fat – The adjusted twelfth rib fat thickness of a sire’s progeny, expressed in inches. SHR: Shear Force (Simmental) – Pounds of force required to shear a steak. Carc H/P and Ult H/P: Group/progeny (Angus) – Reflects the number of contemporary groups and the number of carcass and ultrasound progeny included in the analysis. I: Interim – The EPD is based on performance information of a bull’s sire, dam and relatives. P: Pedigree estimate.

INDEXES $EN: Cow Energy Value (Angus) – Assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires, expressed in dollar savings/cow/year. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals. $EN savings include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. $W: Weaned Calf Value (Angus) – The expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit, expressed in $/head. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size. $F: Feedlot Value (Angus) – Calculates a $/head difference in expected progeny performance for post weaning merit. $F uses WW and YW EPDs along with trait inter-relationships. Typical feedlot gain value, feed consumption and cost differences are accounted for in the final calculations. $G: Grid Value (Angus) – Combines quality grade and yield grade attributes, and is calculated for animals with carcass EPDs, ultrasound EPDs or both types of EPDs. A three-year rolling average is used to establish typical industry economic values for quality grade and yield grade schedules. $B: Beef Value (Angus) – The expected average dollar per head difference in the progeny post weaning performance and carcass value. The $B value is comprised of two pieces: $F and $G. API: All–Purpose Index (Simmental) – Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with daughters retained and remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. TI: Terminal Index (Simmental) – Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold on a grade and yield basis.

BMI$: Baldy Maternal Index (Hereford) – An index to maximize profit for commercial cow/calf producers who use Hereford bulls in rotational crossbreeding programs on Angus-based cows and heifers. Retained ownership of calves is assumed, with fed cattle marketed on a Certified Hereford Beef® (CHB) pricing grid. CEZ$: Calving EZ Index (Hereford) – Similar to BMI$, except Hereford bulls are mated only to yearling heifers. Increased emphasis on CE and MCE compared with the other index BII$: Brahman Influence Index (Hereford) – This index is similar to BMI$, except Hereford bulls are used in rotational crossing with Brahman rather than Angus. Greater emphasis placed on traits deficient in Brahman-cross cattle, (fertility and age at puberty) and less on acceptable traits (growth and calving ease). CHB$: Certified Hereford Beef Index (Hereford) – A terminal sire index where Hereford bulls are mated to British-cross cows and all offspring are sold as fed cattle on a CHB pricing grid.

sIRE INFORMATION Genetic Defects In the last couple of years several genetic defects have been identified in Angus and other breeds, defects which include Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH), Contractural Arachnodactyly (CA) and Osteopetrosis (OS). It is important for A.I. companies to be vigilant concerning genetic defects as the opportunity to increase the frequency of these negative traits on the population can be significant. With bulls selling 50 to 100,000 units, a single carrier bull can spread a genetic problem widely. Genex has worked hard to ensure this does not happen. All Genex bulls listed in this directory have either been tested or are known free by pedigree for the major genetic defects. AM: Arthrogryposis Multiplex “Curly Calf” – A recessive lethal mutation resulting from gene deletion causing abnormal development in utero. CA: Contractural Arachnodactyly “Fawn Calf” – An inherited simple recessive mutation resulting from gene deletion causing reduced elasticity of the connective tissue of muscle. D2: Dwarfism – A recessive mutation on a single chromosome resulting in a specific strain of dwarfism. HY: Hypotrichosis “Hairlessness” – A recessive mutation resulting in partial to almost complete lack of hair on calves. IE: Idiopathic Epilepsy – A simple recessive gene resulting in a neurological disorder causing seizures. MA: Alpha–Mannosidosis – An inherited and lethal lysosomal storage disease noticed prior to animals reaching sexual maturity; present signs of severe progressive neurological disease. NH: Neuropathic Hydrocephalus “Water Head” – A lethal recessive mutation within a gene involved in development and maintenance of central nervous system tissue. OS: Osteopetrosis “Marble Bone Disease” – A lethal mutation in a gene necessary for bone remodeling during development causing premature birth. PHA: Pulmonary Hypoplasia with Anasarca – A lethal recessive mutation resulting in underdeveloped lungs and fluid retention.

TH: Tibial Hemimelia – A lethal recessive mutation resulting in multiple congenital defects such as absence of the tibia and abdominal hernias. Heterozygous Polled – Polled bulls that carry one horned gene. May sire calves with horns when mated to cows carrying the horned gene. Homozygous Polled – Bulls with a 99.9 percent probability of being homozygous polled, having been DNA tested or testmated to horned and heterozygous polled cows. Expect these bulls to sire all polled calves. Inconclusive DNA test – Bull was tested, but the lab was unable to determine whether the animal is homozygous or heterozygous. Double Polled – Young, unproven sires whose parents are both polled. Heterozygous Black – Black bulls that carry one red gene. Expect 50 percent black calves when the bull is mated to nondiluted red cows. Homozygous Black – Bulls with a 99.9 percent probability of producing all black calves when mated to non–diluted red and black cows. Dilution Gene – Cattle carrying the dilution gene will be gray, red or yellow. Non–dilutor cattle will appear black or darker red.

Our philosophy of combining “cow sense with science” continues to work at Genex. We are a genetic company and genetic improvement is an important part of our efforts best measured by the EPDs published on our bulls. However, breeding profitable cattle is more than just putting high EPDs together in a pedigree. Longevity in cattle is an important component in profitability. Obviously a herd needs to have genetics for performance and quality, but structural traits that can influence longevity do not have EPDs and that is where “cow sense” becomes an important part of our program. Every bull that enters the Genex lineup is evaluated by one of the professionals on the beef programs staff. We take into account genetic levels for the important performance and quality traits, but also the structural integrity of the bull, and when possible, his dam and other relatives. We look at the pedigree and utilize our knowledge of the animals in the pedigree to determine if the bull is a good fit for Genex. We step back and ask ourselves, “Is this bull going to sire progeny that are profitable for our customers and members?” It is only after answering that question that we proceed on procurement. This has been an especially busy year. We have brought in 36 Angus, seven Simmentals, nine Red Angus, five Herefords and numerous other bulls in the heat tolerant and other breeds. Our goals in procuring these bulls are to fill the various market segments within our industry including growth, calving ease, carcass, maternal and bulls specifically for the various international markets. Genetic progress means continuing to update the Genex lineup with the best genetics available, and that means you will continue to see new bulls entering the lineup. We are excited, and looking forward to bringing this new group of bulls to you!
