Spring 2013
Willie Altenburg, AVP, Beef Development, Genex
It’s 2 a.m., the alarm goes off. Where am I? Oh, yes, night check and it’s my turn. I stop at the fridge to get a drink of ice tea and then put on my Carhartts which are neatly arranged at the back door. It’s almost like a fire drill; you just step into them and head out the door, waking up as you go. I grab the spot light and head to the corrals. Tonight it’s cold but no wind, a frost everywhere and a very beautiful sky with stars. As you check you’re thinking, night feeding and day calving, it usually works but you still have to check.

BEEF HORIZONS STAFF Lindsay Johnson, Editor Brenda Sisung, Assistant Editor Andy Graf, Graphic Designer
However, this has been a different year with the cold weather early, heifers have been on corn stubble pastures up until now, which is very good feed. They are in good shape, maybe even too good. You wonder, why are calves so big? It’s the same A.I. calving ease sires that were used last year, but calves are bigger. I recall the research of winter effects, cold temperatures and feed effecting calf size. I put the spotlight over the heifers on the feed ground. They are laying on the hay, a good time to get to know them again. You recall the day they were born, as well as the days their dam and grandam were born. What sire are you going to breed them to next year? This night checking is a very valuable time to think, especially when all is this quiet. Night feeding, day calving worked this time – all is quiet.

Now the walk back to the house on such a beautiful night, it’s a great night to be a cowboy! It makes you feel good to see what you have accomplished in your cow herd. But it’s time to think ahead about next year’s breeding and making sure not to get lulled to sleep and use sires too big for calving ease in case we have another year like this. We need to establish a threshold for calving ease to make sure the heifers can calve when the weather is cold and the feed is good. The walk back from the night check is valuable, it gives you time to think. And as long as I am awake, I check some websites and read a few articles. Here’s a couple you might enjoy.

1993 was a year of change, the first of many business opportunities for Wisconsin DHI Cooperative and 21st Century Genetics. These two cooperatives were looking to bring about a positive growth environment that would propel them into the future. The memberships of both organizations were cautiously excited as the news broke of a first ever development in U.S. cooperative history. The birth of Cooperative Resources International (CRI), the first ever holding cooperative, has proven to be a business development milestone and a business model that is the envy of the cooperative world.

John Ruedinger, Chairman, CRI Board of Directors
CRI is designed to generate internal operating efficiencies through coordination and standardization while maintaining a level of service to members and customers. These business efficiencies were what the membership wanted to achieve in 1993. Your founding boards of directors and management teams gave CRI a set of guiding principles led by our mission statement, which encompasses our values as a cooperative while balancing our growth potential. Our mission statement reads to “Provide products and services as effectively as possible to maximize the profitability of members and customers worldwide while maintaining a strong cooperative.” From its modest beginnings, CRI has acquired or merged with over 29 private or cooperative businesses. The balance sheet has grown in total assets from $23 million in 1993 to over $116 million in 2012. Over the same time, operating revenue has grown from $32 million to well over $165 million. Over the years the boards of directors in the CRI family have developed a great sense of pride knowing we have made such an impact on the world’s economies. The strength of CRI strategy lies in the combination of fundamental growth in the markets in which CRI operates, the strength of CRI’s global sales and distribution network, and most importantly the success of research and technology. Through global presentations and negotiations one thing has been obvious; CRI is well respected and influential in the markets with which it works. As CRI prepares for the next 20 years, producers around the world are becoming far more aware of both the need to increase output and the potential for controllable margins. CRI has the reputation of fast technology adoption, industry innovation and managing change. Global population and increasing urbanization are driving increased demand for food and protein diets. CRI is in a position to meet those demands. CRI is here to stay, and we can all be proud to be a participating member of such a prestigious organization.
MEMBERSHIP MATTERS Terri Dallas, Vice President of Information & Public Relations, CRI
What are the benefits of becoming a Genex member? As a Genex member, you … • Have voting privileges allowing you to have a voice in the governance of the cooperative. • Have the opportunity to participate in membership meetings. • Receive equity in the cooperative. • Can become a Genex delegate or a Genex board member. How do I become a member? • Purchase $200 of semen, products and/or services in a 12-month period (increases to $500 in 2015). • Complete a membership form. • Have your social security number or tax identification number on file at Genex. What does it cost to become a member? • No fee is required to become a Genex member. Simply meet the above requirements. Do I have to attend regular meetings? • Members are invited to one meeting each year. This meeting is the cooperative’s chance to thank members for their involvement.
12
As a member, how is my opinion heard by the cooperative? • As a producer member you have the chance to elect a delegate for your district. Each delegate represents approximately 100 members. • Each delegate represents his or her district at a fall input meeting and at the annual meeting each year. • Delegates gather at the annual meeting as a region to elect their board member. • Thus, as a producer member your opinions are brought to the attention of the governing board by the elected delegate for your district.
Genex Member Definition Will Change in 2015 After reviewing delegate/alternate input received at Fall Delegate Meetings in 2011, the Genex board recommended a change in member definition for 2015 from a minimum of $200 to $500 of annual allocatable expenditures to the CRI governance committee. The committee supported the recommendation and advanced the member definition change to the CRI board. The CRI board also supported the member definition change and voted to change the Genex member definition from a minimum of $200 to $500 of allocatable expenditures effective in 2015. A three-year communication plan has been put in place to make all members aware of the change.

SUCCESS BEGINS WITH
PROTOCOL COMPLIANCE
Sarah Thorson, Beef Education Manager, Genex
If on any given day, 95% of your cows receive the correct injection or proper CIDR insertion, your pregnancy rates will be affected. 14-day CIDR®-PG Perform Timed Artificial Insemination (TAI) at 66 ± 2 hr after PG with GnRH at TAI.

Most people would say achieving 95% compliance is a good thing. In fact, if your child brought home a 95% on a test most of us would be thrilled – after all, that is an “A”. However, if you told me the synchronization program on your ranch was being carried out with 95% accuracy, I would consider this a big problem. If your ranch was using the 14-Day CIDR®–PG protocol which involves insertion and removal of the CIDR and two shots at 95% accuracy you would actually synchronize only 81% (.95 x .95 x .95 X .95 = 81%) of the enrolled females correctly. If your accuracy fell to 90% compliance only 66% of females would be properly synchronized. Each action during a synchronization program has a cumulative effect on the overall success of the program. If only 81% of your females are synchronized correctly and we expect about a 65% pregnancy rate from the 14-Day CIDR protocol the percent of females that would achieve pregnancy to this synchronization and A.I. breeding would be about 53%. Can you afford to have that many open females? Noncompliance to the synchronization program is probably the number one reason why synchronization programs fail. The investment of extra time and money in a synchronization program is significant, so make sure everyone involved understands the importance of the right cow, getting the right shot, on the right day. When you use Genex professional chute-side service, you can be assured the Genex staff has the knowledge and understanding of each synchronization program to help you achieve the highest possible results. The Genex chute-side service protocols located on pages 7 and 8 are designed to be cut out and hung up to use as a reference during breeding season. Contact your local Genex representative at 888.333.1783 with any questions.

Chute-Side Service Protocol
Considerations Prior to Breeding Season • Keep accurate calving, breeding and pregnancy records. • Animal identification should be clear and easily readable. • Ensure herd health and disease prevention with a well designed pre-breeding vaccination protocol. Vaccinate females a minimum of 30 days before the breeding season begins. • Ensure all products are purchased and on-hand prior to initiation of the protocol. • Have adequate facilities to gather, sort and process cattle in a reasonable time period. Use a portable artificial insemination (A.I.) barn if available.
Identify Good Candidates for Estrus Synchronization • Heifers: 1. Should weigh 65% of their mature body weight by the start of breeding. 2. At least 50% of heifers should have a reproductive tract score > 4 by two weeks prior to the start of synchronization or six to eight weeks prior to the breeding season. • Cows: 1. Average body condition score should be at least five at time of EAZI-BREED™ CIDR® insertion and should be maintained through breeding season. 2. Cows should average 40 days post calving at CIDR insertion.
Synchronization • Refer to the current synchronization protocol recommendations in the Beef Genetic Management Guide or consult your local Genex representative. • Prepare the calendar of actions to ensure protocol compliance. • Meticulously follow the estrus synchronization protocol. • If detecting estrus, spend as much time observing the animals as possible. • Use estrus detection aids to facilitate visual observation of estrus.
Injections • Use the herd owner’s recommendations for injection site locations. Beef Quality Assurance guidelines recommend intramuscular injections be given in the neck. • Use single dose syringes with 1½-inch, 18-gauge needles. • Avoid pistol grip, multi-dose syringes if possible. • When using GnRH, make sure to keep it cool. Extra bottles should be stored in a cooler.
Nutritional Management • Females should be on an upward plane of nutrition for 45-60 days prior to breeding. • Change of diet for 21 days prior to or after breeding should be gradual. ©2013 CRI

EAZI-BREED™ CIDRs® • Wear protective gloves when handling CIDRs. • Insertion: 1. Dip the CIDR applicator in a non-irritating antiseptic solution. Example: Chlorhexidine or Nolvasan Solution 2. Fit the body of one CIDR into the applicator with the tail along the slot. The wings will fold and only the tips will protrude from the top of the applicator. 3. Dip the top portion of the loaded applicator into a suitable veterinary obstetrical lubricant. Recommend: Chlorhexi-Lube by Priority Care® 4. Lift the animals tail and wipe the vulva lips clean with a disposable towel. 5. With the tail lifted, insert the loaded applicator slot side down, with the CIDR tail curling downward, through the vulva at a slight upward angle and push forward, without forcing, into the front portion of the vagina. 6. Dispense the CIDR by depressing the plunger. Then slowly ease back the applicator from inside the vagina. 7. With the CIDR correctly placed, the wings are open in the front portion of the vagina and only the removal tail should be hanging from the vulva in a downward position. If animals are in confinement shorten the removal tail with cutting pliers. 8. Repeat Step 1 before reusing the applicator. • Removal: 1. Withdraw CIDR by pulling on the removal tail. • Tips: 1. Utilize a two bucket wash of Chlorhexidine or Nolvasan solution for equipment including the CIDR gun. 2. Make sure the CIDR tail is pointed down, having the tail pointed up can cause irritation and makes it easier for another animal to remove the CIDR early. 3. Have extra CIDR applicators available in case one breaks.
Transporting Females • If animals need to be transported after A.I., it is recommended to move within four days or wait the recommended 45 days before transporting.
Breeding Day • Set-up breeding barn ahead of time. Have extra gloves, paper towels, lube and A.I. guns. • Have thaw unit warming. Calibrate thaw unit before breeding season to make sure the temperature is correct (90-95 °F). • Consider using a gun warmer.
After Fixed-Time Artificial Insemination • To distinguish between A.I. and bull bred pregnancies at pregnancy diagnosis; restrict all breeding capable bulls for 10-14 days following A.I. • Pregnancy check at 29 days with DG29™ blood pregnancy test, by 75 days via ultrasound or 80-90 days via rectal palpation to distinguish A.I. pregnancies from bull bred. • Maintain breeding females on an adequate nutrition and mineral program.

CHANGES IN AMERICAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION EPDS Willie Altenburg, AVP-Beef Development, Genex
Three important changes made by the American Angus Association (AAA) were reflected in the EPD update. 1. Recalibration Enhancements were made to genetic prediction tools following an extensive genomic recalibration project in collaboration with Pfizer (now Zoetix). Angus breeders will notice updates EPDs impacted by HD 50K tested animals. The HD 50K test was recalibrated on a larger number of animals than the original test. In the era of high density genomic tests being widely used across the AAA population, periodic recalibration is necessary and will become more frequent (for example, currently the dairy industry recalibrates monthly).
2. Revised Genomic Correlations Correlations between HD 50K genomic values and AAA phenotypes tended to go up for most traits, particularly calving ease. An increase in the genetic correlations indicates that more genetic variation is being explained by the HD 50K for the trait. Also, genetic correlations were re-estimated for Igenity 384. The correlations show some decline, because the initial animals tested are further distanced from the current population. What does this mean for EPDs? Little change in EPDs from the recalibration update occurred in high accuracy sires. A few larger EPD changes were noticed for lower accuracy animals and non-parents (although on average, EPD changes among these animals were also small).
3. $Value Update The economic assumptions are updated periodically based on a three-year rolling average to be more representative of current industry trends. Assumption updates impacted Weaned Calf Value ($W), Cow Energy Value ($EN) and Beef Value ($B) with its related indexes. Changes in $W were representative of higher calf prices along with increases in feed energy costs. These two factors tended to offset each other. For $B, changes were a result of premiums or discounts for quality as well as similar attributes for red meat yield components. The changes in revenue also tended to offset increased ration costs.

INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR ROUNDTABLE
Genex Independent Contractors offer personalized genetic and reproductive services while striving to improve the profit potential of beef producers throughout their area. They work with purebred and commercial producers to develop customized reproductive programs to meet immediate and long-term genetic goals. These individuals provide the industry’s best chute-side service. Get the inside scoop from these four Genex Independent Contractors.
Chris Larkin, Ottumwa, Iowa Terry Loftis, Seminary, Miss.
What is the main reason your customers use A.I.?
My customer’s are most interested in genetic improvement. Purebred customers like the variety of genetics available, while commercial cattlemen like the option of using proven bulls.
Improving the productivity of their herd is the main reason my customers use A.I. They also enjoy the fact A.I. condenses their calving season. Nobody wants to check calving heifers over a 60-day calving period; synchronization greatly reduces that window to about a 14-day period.
What do your customers see as the main benefit?
The main benefit is the ability to use proven bulls and selecting traits that are profitable to each operation. If operations need to add performance, maternal or carcass I can incorporate the sires that are proven in these traits. At the same time my customers appreciate having more than half their cattle calve in the first week of the calving season. Therefore, the age and weight of their calves are more uniform.
A.I. offers many benefits, the ability to use superior genetics for a minimal investment. A.I. allows the rancher to select the genetic traits they desire in their herd, and improve the genetic traits of their cattle in a relatively short period of time.
What are the biggest factors to the success of an A.I. program?
The biggest factors of success are nutrition, properly administered synchronization, animal health and functional facilities. A professional technician is also very important. I have found that Genex semen is very high quality and as a result have been very successful with conception rates.
Overall herd health is the number one priority. A year-long herd health management program is key. Other factors that contribute to success are following synchronization protocols, proper semen handling, cattle handling and utilizing highly-trained, qualified A.I. technicians.
Which synchronization protocols do you recommend and why?
I recommend using the 7-Day CO-Synch primarily for cows and 14-Day CIDR® method for heifers.
I recommend the use of all synchronization protocols, however they are only successful when used properly. We probably have had higher conception with the 14Day CIDR protocol utilized in heifers. Lowest per head cost is MGA®-PG with satisfactory conception rates in heifers. The 7-Day CIDR is a good option as a shorter length protocol for use on heifers and cows.
What is the best way for a customer to learn more about A.I.?
The field days I have hosted have been very successful and well received by cattlemen. These field days demonstrate the Genex chute-side service and show how we can handle cattle quietly and efficiently.
Visit with neighbors who have used A.I. to learn about their success stories. Attend area cattle conferences, beef expo shows or visit with your local Genex representative to learn more. Your Genex representative can provide you with dates for meetings and customer field days in your area.

BEEF HORIZONS
Matt Swanson, Ainsworth, Neb.
Clint Sexson, Stanfield, Ore. The main reason my customers use A.I. is to change the current genetics of their cow herd towards their particular goal. Each producer has a little bit different goal, however, as I talk with each producer we work together in a partnership to figure out where they are currently and where they want to go.
By using proven bulls and selecting for the particular traits the producer is looking for we are able to make these genetic changes quicker and more consistently than using herd bulls.
Purebred breeders utilize A.I. to stay abreast on the best genetics in the business and to promote their program. Typically A.I. sired cattle out-sell pasture sired cattle and by using A.I., commercial operations can use proven genetics for calving ease and tighten their calving interval.
The primary benefit purebred breeders see is the marketability of the bulls and females they produce. Also, the A.I. sires are a more reliable source of genetics which are more proven. The commercial producer is after a live calf born without difficulty in a short period of time, especially in the case of first calf heifers. These A.I. sired calves perform more similarly and are more uniform at weaning, in turn, allowing a very marketable terminal bound steer and a more uniform selection of replacement females.
1. Communication between the Genex representative and the customer; talk early and talk often so the planning process is smooth. Communication is the biggest factor for a successful A.I. program. The producer has to feel comfortable with me and the program we have chosen. Many of our synchronization programs are scheduled months in advance so there is not much room for last minute changes.
2. Timing and execution of the plan is important. It’s important to vaccinate early, at least 30 days ahead of breeding, and ensure heifers are mature enough to be cycling. Timing also plays an important role at A.I. breeding. This must occur at the right hour after standing heat or within the allotted time for the synchronization protocol. 3. Planning and details help with success. Always make sure the people involved are comfortable with the process and the responsibilities they are accountable for. 4. People are the key to success – everyone from the crew bringing the cattle to the individuals thawing semen to the people that supply food and refreshments. Good people only enhance the process.
The synchronization protocol I recommend is the one that fits the producer. There are so many different ways beef animals can be synchronized and there are positives and negatives to each one. What I have been using most frequently in large breeding projects is the 14-Day CIDR-PG for heifers and the 7-Day CO-Synch + CIDR for cows.
For heifers in a feedlot I recommend MGA-PG mainly because of cost. For heifers that are not fed consistently and timely, I recommend the 14-Day CIDR-PG. With this protocol the heifer is allowed to cycle once before A.I. In addition, it encourages producers to vaccinate and prepare the cattle for the process five weeks before A.I. Synchronizing cows is mostly dependent on labor and facilities, however the 7-Day CIDR is probably the one that fits most producers. It allows for fixed-timed A.I. so the producer can concentrate the labor at needed times with no extra labor needed for heat detection.
Ranchers in my area are very hands-on learners so I encourage them to talk to someone who has been A.I. breeding for some time. Find out if that producer would let you come and witness firsthand what an A.I. project entails.
Customer meetings and the large herd meetings allow us to inform customers and hear their feedback. Participating in A.I. schools is another opportunity for producers to learn more. The schools demonstrate the benefits of A.I.
