Twenty Years Later … In The News An Experience of a Lifetime PregCheck™ – The Genex Fertility Advantage Fall Beef Special Feature Sires Extending Semen for Optimal Pregnancies New Acquisition Sires Allied and Genex to Partner
PERSPECTIVE
Twenty Years Later … By Keith Heikes, Chief Operating Officer, Genex
As I was preparing to write this column, I took a few minutes to look back at some of the previous columns penned. One that caught my eye was the first article I ever wrote for Horizons. Printed in the May/June 1995 issue, it was titled “Value Added Genetics.” There have no doubt been some large changes in the beef industry since that article was written. At Genex, there was the merger of three A.I. organizations as well as numerous structural changes. There have also been changes in demographics with fewer herds and the corresponding increase in average herd size.
LARGE HERD CONSULTING
The change in technology over that time period is just as great. Synchronization programs and genomics are just some of the factors that have influenced Genex and the members we work with. Information on just about anything is readily available with a click of the mouse. In that article from 20 years ago, I had written of the “great deal of time and expense devoted by researchers, educators and others looking at ways to add value to agricultural products and increase income at the farm level.”
PREGCHECK
That statement still holds true, especially here at Genex. We are proud of our ability to adapt and provide services that add value to our genetics. Today, the list of value-added services offered by Genex is quite extensive. In short, the Genex staff does a lot to help members enhance their herd management and increase their ranch profits. Among the many products and services available that add value to you, as a producer, are: • Large Herd Consulting • PregCheck™ sire fertility evaluations • Chute-side service • Marketing relationships At the end of the day, our goal is fairly simple – to provide you, as a Genex member, with the right products and tools to help you do a better job. That’s has been our goal for many years and will continue to be in the future. It’s what cooperation and belonging to a cooperative is all about. We want to be a partner with you in building a better future for everyone.

A PregCheck™ Highlight: Final Answer II 1AN01259 FINAL ANSWER II
In June CRI, with funding from the USDA Emerging Markets Program, hosted a delegation of 29 beef industry representatives from China, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and Russia. The participants were key decision makers from large beef operations, universities, agriculture ministries and processing facilities. The tour showcased the U.S. beef industry “from semen to cellophane,” with the overall program objective to increase awareness and confidence in the U.S. beef industry and genetic products to result in increased exports of U.S. genetics. After a welcome by CRI and introduction to the U.S. EPD system, the group visited National Cattlemen’s Beef Association where they learned about the utilization of Checkoff dollars to promote beef. The group met with representatives from U.S. Meat Exporters Federation, who spoke about working together to build a market for beef.

“An important percent of the current ag college graduates are returning to the farm, which is a positive trend. However, a five-year projection indicates we will be short over 15,000 ag graduates in the year 2020.” This was an eye-opening remark made by CRI CEO Doug Wilson at the 2015 annual meeting. While it’s nice to know agriculture college graduates return to their roots and what, more than likely, initiated their love for agriculture, you can’t help but focus on the latter half of that statement – the agriculture industry will, no doubt, suffer a shortage of over 15,000 ag graduates.

MAKE A LIFE. CRI Annual Meeting
With the decline of agriculture-related graduates, one thing has become evident for those who pursue that career path: they must be passionate about agriculture. The future of agriculture depends on hardworking, skilled, passionate young adults who are truly vested in arguably the most important industry worldwide. Keeping that in mind, CRI announces the recipients of its first annual CRI collegiate scholarship program. More than 70 applicants shared with us what agriculture means to them and the lessons they learned from their agriculture involvement. From their answers, we know the future of agriculture looks bright. The application period for the second annual CRI Collegiate Scholarship begins in December 2015. Applicants must be attending a college or technical school in the fall of 2016 and be pursuing an agricultural degree. Applicants must also be affiliated with a Genex or AgSource member by having an active role on their farm or ranch. Watch for more information in the December Horizons.

The Full Story Behind W/C Wide Track 694Y This spring, a high-impact Simmental bull, W/C Wide Track 694Y, was erroneously named a carrier of Contractural Arachnodactyly (CA), also known as fawn calf syndrome. After further investigation, it became clear that Wide Track was in fact free of the defect. What happened to lead to such a monumental mistake? Here is the full story from American Simmental Association (ASA), Genex Cooperative, Inc. and the Werning family. As part of an effort to screen the most-used bulls in the ASA registry, the ASA in collaboration with Genex, Accelerated Genetics, Select Sires and Allied Genetic Resources, sent in samples on all SimGenetic bulls available through these companies for extended genetic condition testing. On April 16, 2015, the ASA received results on 249 sires tested for the following conditions:
• AM = Arthrogryposis Multiplex, a.k.a. Curly calf (Angus) • DL = Dilutor (Hereford) • IE = Idiopathic Epilepsy (Hereford) • NH = Neuropathic Hydrocephalus, a.k.a. water head (Angus) • OS = Osteopetrosis, a.k.a. Marble bone disease (Red Angus) • PHA = Pulmonary Hypoplasia with Anasarca (Shorthorn and Dexter) • TH = Tibial Hemimelia (Shorthorn) • HY = Hypotrichosis (Hereford) • CA = Contractural Arachnodactyly, a.k.a. Fawn calf (Angus) • DD = Developmental Duplication (Angus) One bull, W/C WIDE TRACK 694Y (ASA # 2588250), was reported a CA carrier. Dr. Jon Beever conducted further testing on the original sample (two additional tests) and concluded the sample was in fact a carrier of CA. Wide Track had an Angus cow, of unknown pedigree, four generations back in his pedigree making it unlikely, but feasible, that he carried the CA gene. As the dam and sire of Wide Track did not have DNA on file, the Wernings sent in samples for parent verification and CA testing to both Dr. Beever and GeneSeek. In the meantime, Genex pulled Wide Track from their lineup. Announcements were sent out from Genex (April 20) and ASA (April 26) to notify their members. “For those Genex members and customers who had purchased Wide Track semen within the past 24 months, Genex issued a credit for any semen that hadn’t been used,” states Willie Altenburg of Genex Beef Genetics.
During that same time, the Werning family pulled Wide Track from the herd and made the decision to have him put down. “We don’t believe in using a carrier bull so didn’t see any value in keeping him around,” states Scott Werning, Werning Cattle Company. “We realized there was the potential for him to sire clean calves; however, we didn’t want to be known for propagating the defect. We knew putting him down was the right thing to do.” On May 6, Dr. Beever notified ASA and Genex that neither of Wide Track’s parents were carriers of CA. This is not possible unless 1) the original CA report was wrong or 2) the parentage was wrong. Dr. Beever isolated a new sample of DNA from Wide Track which tested free of Contractural Arachnodactyly. Dr. Beever then obtained a new straw of semen from Genex and tested that sample. Again, the sample came back CA-free. On May 8, Genex and the ASA announced that Wide Track was indeed CA-free and the original testing was an error. The reported parentage was confirmed with GeneSeek on May 15, 2015. “When we learned Wide Track was CA-free, many who had received credit for Wide Track semen, used that credit to purchase more Wide Track semen,” states Altenburg. “That tells you how well producers like the bull. Today, a limited amount of Wide Track semen is still available from Genex.” The obvious question is, “Why was the original sample positive?” The simple answer is we still don’t know. All the samples in the same order were retested twice and all came back free so there was not a simple swap. It is unclear how the original sample was contaminated; but, there is no doubt that Wide Track is free of these 10 genetic conditions. By Jackie Atkins, ASA and Lindsay Johnson, Genex

An Experience of a Lifetime By Wyatt DeVries, 2014 Genex Summer Intern, Genex
They always say, an internship opens many doors; little did I know that it would open one half way around the world. When Sarah Thorson, Genex Beef Education Manager, asked if I would be interested in breeding heifers in Kazakhstan, I didn’t think twice. Preparing for work on the other side of the globe is about as easy as it sounds. I packed the typical breeding clothes, three fence stretchers, three fencing pliers and hoped the weather would be decent. There’s no counting on Wal‑Mart for this one! The first couple days were mind-blowing. There is a world of opportunity in Kazakhstan. The government is trying to grow the agricultural industry by selling land for little to nothing; they even have a land lottery twice a year. We were helping set up the first western style ranch in southern Kazakhstan. It was all new – first fenced pastures, first time an operation had more than 100 head and first cattle dewormed. As you might imagine, the first fences were quite the stir with the neighbors. For centuries, cattle have grazed in an open range “agreement.” The government has offered deeded ground, which some people have taken advantage of, but the older generation is still of the socialistic mind-set. The native cattle are mainly dairy-influenced; we did see a Hereford bull on one of our adventures. No bull calf, stud colt or ram lamb is cut in Kazakhstan, making genetic improvement virtually impossible. The heifers and cleanup bulls for this ranch came from a herd in northern Kazakhstan made up of Angus from Australia. To help ensure the cowboys would have a positive learning experience for their first calving season, we bred the heifers to 1AN01259 FINAL ANSWER II.

BEEF HORIZONS
After the first week, I quickly realized why this world of opportunity hasn’t been explored by many more. The challenges almost outweigh the prospers; I was hoping I was the kind of man to stand the test. The first, and biggest, challenge would be the people. Language barriers are workable, but attitude on the other hand is a limiting factor. Having two Americans attempt to put the spark of capitalism in these people was as wishful as finding the pot of gold. For example, when the cowboys were first asked to fix fence while they were checking pastures they replied with “no, that is the fencing crew’s job” or “do we get a pay raise.” Employees rolled through weekly and it was just a matter of sifting through until a young trainable kid came along. Another challenge we had was simply working in a developing industry. You can always prepare, but you never know what to expect until you come upon the situation. Synchronizing the heifers was a learning experience for everyone. Availability of hormones was very limited. The manager was not able to find GnRH so we thought we would try just Lutalyse®. When we received the shipment, it was a month away from expiration and who knows how it was stored. Needless to say, we didn’t get the best response. After that, we decided to pull heats off of pasture, which worked great until the returning help decided to let the morning heats out before they were bred (luckily that only happened once). I challenge everyone to 1) Google where Kazakhstan is, because it’s probably not where you think it is, and 2) (attention younger readers) spend some time outside your comfort zone. I’m not saying it has to be on a ranch in the mountains of a foreign country where your mom can’t overnight you coffee and a PB&J, but a place where you can experience new ways. Even though I lost 15 pounds from the mutton diet, I would do it all over again!

EXTENDING SEMEN for Optimal Pregnancies
By Michael Kaproth, Vice President-Labs & Production Technology, Genex
Historically Genex and its predecessor organizations have used a homogenized whole milk media as a semen extender. In some of our laboratories milk extender has been used for more than 50 years. Semen extended in milk does present challenges in evaluating the post-thaw viability of sperm cells. However the superior pregnancy results historically achieved with milk-extended semen outweigh the difficulties of post-thaw microscopic examination. “If we wanted our product to look the best under the microscope, we would use a different extender,” Glen Gilbert, Vice President of Production. “But we have chosen to use the extender that provides the most pregnancies.”
Evaluation Challenges for Untrained Eye
Even under ideal conditions, semen extended in milk is difficult to evaluate. Unlike most egg yolk based extenders, the optical clarity of milk extender is poor because of the fat droplets. Light passing through the sample is reflected and refracted making the observation of individual sperm difficult. The thickness of the sample being evaluated is critical in order to obtain repeatable results. If the sample is too thick, the optical distance from the top of the sample to the bottom (distance from the bottom of the cover slip to the top of the slide) will be too great and sperm will be impossible to visualize. At the same time, a sample that is too small will not have adequate depth, and sperm will appear immobile because they are stuck to the slide or cover slip. Each of these cases would lead the evaluator to conclude the number (percentage) of sperm moving in a straight line is very low.
Genex Quality Check
Each collection of Genex semen is evaluated after freezing to ensure it contains an adequate number of viable sperm cells to result in a high percentage of pregnancies. It goes without saying that semen is a perishable product whose quality can diminish after it is initially frozen and evaluated if it is not kept at temperatures below –130°C.

Field Research Reveals Optimal Choice
Genex research comparing semen extended in egg yolk media to milk shows that evaluators typically rate semen extended in egg yolk media higher than milk. In addition, sperm cells incubated in an egg yolk extension media for extended periods of time after thawing will almost always continue to exhibit motility long after the milk extended sperm have stopped movement. As a result one would expect egg yolk extended semen to achieve greater pregnancy rates. However, Genex field research based on hundreds of thousands of inseminations shows semen extended in milk achieves equal or superior results compared to semen extended in an egg yolk media.
Published Research on Conception Advantage
An article published on extenders points out a unique positive property of milk extender: it gets cows pregnant. The Journal of Theriogenology article, Comparison of two processing systems for bull semen with regards to post-thaw motility and nonreturn rates, authored by E. Kommisrud et al. (Volume 45, no. 8 June 1996: pp1515-1521) compared a skim milk extender with 5% egg yolk to a commercial all egg yolk tris extender for a total of 197 ejaculates from 45 sires and 41,445 inseminations. Although percent motility was not different between these two extenders, fertility did differ significantly. The extender comprising primarily milk with a small amount of egg yolk was superior to the extender with only egg yolk. Milk-extended semen received a 60-day nonreturn rate of 73.1%, while semen processed with the egg yolk tris extender achieved 71.9%. “At Genex, we are proud of the quality of semen we provide,” adds Gilbert. “Using milk media as a semen extender is one more way this cooperative helps members and customers achieve pregnancies on the farm or ranch.”

Allied and Genex have signed an agreement, initiated with the contract signing of two great sires, 1SM00155 NIGHTRIDE (SimAngus™) and 1SM00153 COWBOY CUT (purebred Simmental). We appreciate Allied manager, Marty Ropp’s help to facilitate these bulls coming to Genex. Allied Genetic Resources has grown to 71 member owners and is poised to add one to three more in the near future. The owners market approximately 6,000 bulls annually and are located in 23 states from Washington and California in the west, to Alabama, North Carolina and Virginia in the eastern U.S. Those bulls would break down by breed with the following estimates: 3,500 SimAngus, 1,500 Purebred Simmental, 400 Angus, 300 Red Angus, 150 Balancers, 60 Shorthorn.
Allied Genetic Resources Marty Ropp, Allied Genetics Resources
Currently the Allied membership maintains a cow herd of more than 20,000 registered females, not including females in cooperator or other related herds. In addition, the ownership runs roughly 5,000 commercial females. Currently, more than half of the yearling information, ultrasound and now DNA information reported to the American Simmental Association is generated from Allied herds. Allied believes the impact these herds have on genetic improvement is even greater than the volume of data might suggest, because that information stems almost entirely from large, well-documented contemporary groups and a history of commitment to whole herd reporting. None of the numbers quoted above include our growing relationships with other large seedstock producers who work closely with our staff as Allied partners. The primary value of our Allied business however, lies in the combined reputation of our ownership and their commercial customer base, which we estimate at between 500,000 and 600,000 females. Commitment to customer success, a desire to use information and technology to breed more valuable
A proven sire that excels for feedlot and carcass traits, yet his progeny have shown very competitively and his daughters have topped sales. CE

The following bulls are owned and backed by Allied owners: seedstock and willingness to prioritize the commercial beef business are also cornerstones of the Allied membership. We are not a breed specific organization despite our large number of SimAngus and Simmental members. We believe instead that breeders with a similar focus on the larger beef business and their commercial customers have far more in common than breed lines and loyalties could ever compare to in the long term. The primary responsibilities of the now six employee owners of the Allied business are to offer meaningful service to the Allied owners’ customer base and in return help to secure the future success of our member owners. Those services range from commercial marketing opportunities for feeder cattle and replacement females, genetic consulting and procurement, supply chain development options, information collection and use, as well as industry networking opportunities. All of these services are directed toward our members’ customers to help promote customer retention and recruitment. We look forward to working with Genex!
