STATEMENT OF PURPOSE GENEX is the trusted provider of world-class animal genetics, progressive reproductive solutions, value-added products and innovative services to members and customers.

The Time for Change is Here

Just as your life experiences have shaped who you are today, history and heritage have shaped the GENEX brand into what it is today.

Where We Came From We take pride in our history. In a time of small farms and big dreams, producers came together to organize cooperatives that would genetically improve cattle performance and deliver economical reproductive services. In true cooperative fashion, those producer members of yesterday helped guide the cooperative just as our producer delegates and board members do today. Since the formation of predecessor cooperatives in the 1930s, GENEX has brought together reputable genetics and reproductive experts

through nearly 50 business mergers and acquisitions. In fact, many of today’s employees and members have roots in 21st Century Genetics, Eastern AI, Atlantic Breeders or Noba — organizations that helped shape GENEX into a trusted supplier of practical, science‑based and customized animal reproductive solutions. GENEX history also writes a remarkable list of industry firsts. This cooperative has again and again applied experience, science and data-driven knowledge to deliver innovative products and services. GENEX was the first to research

and publish a dairy calving ease summary, herdlife evaluation and total economic sire index; the first in the U.S. to offer a commercially available dairy mating system; the first to offer Pocket Thaw™; the first to provide chute-side beef reproductive service; the first stud to publish data-backed dairy and beef sire fertility rankings; and the first in the U.S. to develop and maintain a nucleus herd. These and more recent developments like the Ideal Commercial Cow index and Subclinical Ketosis, Metritis and Foot Health breeding values have earned GENEX the reputation of the industry’s innovator.

Take great pride in GENEX brand history. It has made GENEX into an industry-leading supplier of science-based animal genetics and customized reproductive solutions. We take pride in our heritage. Since 1993, GENEX has been part of Cooperative Resources International (CRI). At that time, CRI was organized as the nation’s first holding cooperative to provide efficiencies in financial management, human resources, information technology and communications and to unite GENEX with other like-minded subsidiaries. That still holds true today, 24 years later. More recently, CRI has also delivered value to GENEX in the form of business development oversight and expansive research capacity through the International Center for Biotechnology – key areas for business advancement. Take great pride in the CRI heritage. Leveraging CRI’s global scope, resources and leadership has enabled GENEX to bring more value to members and customers. This history and heritage has helped to build GENEX into the brand it is today, but the time for change is here.

Who We Are Today Like you, GENEX has a look and a personality. GENEX has goals, a purpose and stands for something. These attributes contribute to the GENEX brand – how you and others perceive the brand. GENEX is an honest, trustworthy, responsive, innovative, knowledgeable and friendly cooperative. GENEX continually strives to lead the way with sciencebased animal genetics and innovative services producers can trust. Put more simply, GENEX is innovative excellence in animal genetics.

GENEX is an industry leader because ... GENEX provides differentiated offerings to members and customers. GENEX provides different industryleading genetics and consulting services to producers based on their needs and wants. GENEX exemplifies relevancy, a measure of what is personally appropriate and makes a difference to members and customers. GENEX provides progressive innovative genetics and customized reproductive services that are relevant to our members’ and customers’ needs (for example, the Ideal Commercial Cow index and PregCheck™ fertility rankings). GENEX is respected. Members, customers and the industry regard GENEX with respect because the co-op is friendly, knowledgeable, responsive and passionate. GENEX is forward-thinking. This is the culmination of historical brand building efforts and the outcome of professional relationships between members, customers, employees and the brand. Being forwardthinking, GENEX is dedicated to ongoing genetic improvement and data-driven innovation. GENEX is part of CRI. Yet, GENEX is like a teenager moving into adulthood and forging forward with its own identity. GENEX is continuing to leverage CRI’s global scope, resources and leadership. Yet, GENEX is stepping out of the shadow of CRI to further establish its own brand. GENEX is the trusted provider of industry-leading animal genetics, progressive reproductive solutions, value-added products and innovative services to members and customers. GENEX is our brand. 

State of the Cooperative

Keith Heikes, GENEX Chief Operating Officer, addressed the member‑elected producer delegates at the annual meeting in January. Below are excerpts from his state of the cooperative address. 2016 was a challenging year for your cooperative. Low dairy prices for the second year in a row affected our financial results much like they did other agricultural businesses. Similarly, U.S. beef prices retreated from record highs, thus limiting GENEX growth in a segment where we had experienced double-digit growth the past few years. Additionally, over the past decade and a half we have grown accustomed to substantial increases in international revenue, but the combination of low global dairy prices and a strong dollar stopped this trend. In short, low dairy and beef prices coupled with the strong dollar formed stronger headwinds than ever before resulting in a negative bottom line for the year. The challenging economics were recognized early in the year and expense reductions put in place. We reduced capital and other expenses while remaining focused on our strategic plan. Among the cooperative’s major activities during the year was the restructuring of the GENESIS program, decentralizing the program to house fewer recipient animals at GENEX facilities. The decision was also made to sell the Mitchell, South Dakota, production facility. This decision enabled us to focus further on our other facilities as we continue to invest time and energy in improving the quality of our beef semen product.

6

//

HORIZONS

Furthermore, plans were put in place to consolidate the domestic and international distribution operations to our Shawano, Wisconsin, facility. In December, we introduced the newest version of the Ideal Commercial Cow index, a Holstein sire index for commercial dairies. Three new health trait breeding values for subclinical ketosis, foot health and metritis were added to the index. The health traits were a collaborative effort between GENEX, AgSource Cooperative Services and the CRI International Center for Biotechnology. We believe this collaboration – and the new traits – are the first of many to come. While 2016 was not a banner year from a financial standpoint, GENEX made strides in market share growth. According to our industry trade association – the National Association of Animal Breeders – during our 12-month fiscal year (October 2015 to September 2016) the industry as a whole was down over 1 million units in semen sales. In that same timeframe, GENEX experienced a 250,000 unit gain over the previous year. This included a new record in Jersey semen sales. For the first time ever, we surpassed 1 million units in Jersey sales. While economic factors impacted the cooperative’s financial success, the past year has been productive if measured by program and product development along with structure changes designed to fulfill the strategic plan. The short-term struggles are significant and yet the long-term outlook for production agriculture is outstanding. 

Greene Retires from GENEX Board

“Paul’s ability to engage the entire board in open discussion is a true talent.” Keith Heikes

Chief Executive Officer Keith Heikes (left) thanks retiring board president Paul Greene (right) for his years of service.

During the January 25 annual meeting of GENEX, Paul Greene of Berlin, New York, retired as GENEX board president. His last president’s address paints a picture of his first years as a board member, the changes he’s seen in the A.I. industry and encourages delegates to run for the GENEX board. “In 1996 I was elected to the Eastern A.I. board of directors, a predecessor of GENEX. Eastern A.I. was a regional cooperative headquartered in Ithaca, New York. In 1996, one of our major board room discussions was about structure – how to grow and expand the cooperative. At that time, a herd with 1,000 cows was considered a mega herd. Sexed semen was only a vision; if you wanted a heifer calf you had a 50:50 chance. The term ‘young sire’ was an unproved bull whose semen was sold to progeny test herds. And, we could recite the credentials on nearly every bull in the stud.

“Many things have changed in the 20 years I have been on the board of directors. By far the two greatest events to impact the A.I. industry were sorted semen and genomics. These two topics have impacted nearly every aspect of GENEX. Sire housing had to be revamped, production schedules were analyzed and the Genetics Department responsibilities were completely reevaluated. Sorted semen and genomics have forced us to initiate a structure driven by economics and production.

manage things a little differently at home, but the things you learn and the opportunities you have will be nothing short of amazing. I know they were for me for the last 20 years.” “Paul has been a steady hand at the wheel, and I certainly have appreciated his guidance and input,” states Keith Heikes, GENEX Chief Operating Officer. “Paul’s ability to engage the entire board in open discussion is a true talent.”

“The industry is on the front end of many other technology developments. I firmly believe our purchase of the CRI International Center for Biotechnology will provide us with the ability to maximize research capabilities. “I would like each of you to consider running for the GENEX board of directors. Yes, you will have to

Top 10 Reasons to be a GENEX delegate The third week of January is often characterized by blowing snow and frigid temps, but in most cases, that doesn’t stop GENEX delegates from convening in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for the cooperative’s annual meeting. This year, delegates from 26 states made the trek. For repeat visitors, the annual meeting is a time to catch up with fellow producers and GENEX management. For new delegates, it’s an opportunity to really learn more about the inner workings of the co-op. Much more than a meeting. While “annual meeting” may sound like a bore, the GENEX meeting is so much more! In addition to the business meeting and evening entertainment, the event includes educational opportunities. This year the co-op held five breakout sessions featuring 11 topics for delegates to gain cooperative or farm management insight. Topics ranged from cybersecurity to beef in Brazil and from research updates to the beef lineup and the Ideal Commercial Cow (ICC$) index. Time and time again, these breakout sessions are a fan favorite. This year was no different. Your reasons. How does a GENEX member get the opportunity to attend the annual meeting? First, you must self-nominate to be a delegate. Then the members in your local membership district cast their vote on who should be a delegate. If you are elected, you are invited (and expected) to attend the annual meeting in January and an input meeting in the fall. Why would you want to become a delegate and attend the annual meeting? Here’s the Top 10 reasons, as shared by delegates at this year’s GENEX annual meeting. 10. Gets you away from the farm or ranch and that daily routine! 9. A chance to meet producers from across the country. 8. It’s a matter of give and take (contribute to the co-op and learn). 7. It’s a family affair – My family’s been members of co-ops since the 1920s. 6. GENEX is the best show in town, and we want to keep it that way! 5. Delegate input keeps the organization healthy. 4. Reuniting with fellow delegates that I only see once a year. 3. Cooperatives educate their delegates and members. 2. Find out the inside-scoop on the new happenings at GENEX. 1. We got voted in! If becoming a delegate and attending the annual meeting interests you, watch for your next opportunity to self-nominate.  8

Here’s what a few delegates had to say: Cybersecurity “I appreciated the ‘take home’ suggestions on what to do to protect my data. I will do so as soon as this conference is done!” Learning from the Future “Fascinating subject! Definitely affects how I think about the future of our dairy.” Beef in Brazil “I learned how beef producers in Brazil are trying to crossbreed to improve their product. They are starting with consistent animals so they should be able to produce a good, ‘like’ F1s.” Delegates in attendance at the Januray 2017 annual meeting.

For more info on the CRI Collegiate Scholarship, visit the GENEX website at http://genex.crinet.com. 

GENEX to Change Delegate Election Cycle Based on delegate input, the GENEX board of directors is changing the annual membership qualification period and delegate election timeframe. Starting in 2018, the membership qualification period will be May 1 through April 30. For example, to qualify as a member in 2018, a customer must spend $500 on GENEX semen, products and/or services between May 1, 2016 and April 30, 2017. In addition, they need to have a membership agreement on file. Delegate nominations will then take place each June with elections held in July. Only those who qualify as a member can be nominated and elected as a delegate. The current delegates and alternates (who were elected in December 2016) will serve through the 2018 annual meeting and until the next elections are held in July 2018.  HORIZONS

Make Calving Season

a Little Easier By: Kenzie Smith, Resale Product Advisor

With calving season in full swing, it is important to be prepared for anything. GENEX has two life event products to help get your calves off to a great start: Push™ calf nutritional paste and Genesis 150 Colostrum Replacer. Push™ calf nutritional paste is a blend of highly digestible globulin proteins and energy components (such as milkfat from colostrum) developed to help calves overcome disease challenges and low energy reserves. By combining high levels of fat and proteins, the calf can have a balanced blend of these two key colostrum components immediately following birth. Push™ calf nutritional paste contains the natural fatty acids found in colostral fat to give the calf a boost of energy. These fatty acids are designed by nature to help the calf thrive. In addition, it contains naturally found colostrum components (peptides and cytokines) that help prime the immune system beyond the globulin proteins everyone is familiar with.

Genesis 150 Colostrum Replacer provides everything the newborn calf needs in just one feeding, so the second feeding can be colostrum, milk or milk replacer. This product provides 150 grams of globulin proteins, essential to newborn calves for optimal nutrition and health, and they can only be absorbed by the calf shortly after birth. This product has a guarantee of 45% protein and 20% fat, ensuring the calf receives enough energy and nutrients right from the start. Genesis Colostrum Replacer Comes in the Perfect Udder Package The Perfect Udder package is a clean, safe and easy method of feeding. The package contains a premeasured dose of colostrum replacer. Just add water to the fill line, shake for 30 seconds, then screw on either the tube or nipple to feed the calf. Once the colostrum is completely administered everything can be thrown away. It’s that easy!

This product does not replace colostrum! However, the specialized formula is complementary to colostrum, so it can be used at birth to further enhance the benefits of colostrum. Push™ calf nutritional paste helps increase the energy and antibodies absorbed from colostrum. The benefits are not limited to the period immediately following birth. Have a calf that is depressed, not eating, coming off of a disease, transported any distance or just needs a push? Then Push™ calf nutritional paste was designed for them! Feed if a calf is: Recovering from disease or infection. Not consuming adequate feed and acting lethargic. Transported over some distance, has become less alert and seems depressed. Scouring, not eating and losing weight. Not consuming colostrum immediately following birth. Depressed and has little interest in standing within the first hour of life. As mentioned, Push calf nutritional paste does not replace colostrum. However, if you are in need of a colostrum replacer, GENEX has you covered. Genesis 150 Colostrum Replacer is fed instead of maternal colostrum, when colostrum is unavailable or is of questionable quality. ™

Genesis 150 Colostrum Replacer is available in the Perfect Udder® package, which makes feeding fast, easy, clean and safe. FAST: With only three steps and a quick dissolving formula, you can feed it to the calf in minutes! EASY: With a premeasured dose of replacer already inside and a fill window on the back, mixing couldn’t be any easier. CLEAN: Disposable packaging helps minimize opportunity for contamination and disease transfer between calves. SAFE: Genesis 150 Colostrum Replacer utilizes first milking colostrum that is carefully collected, handled and pasteurized to ensure product integrity. For more information regarding Push™ calf nutritional paste or Genesis 150 Colostrum Replacer, contact your GENEX representative.  HORIZONS

You can’t afford for her to be open. Use sires with proven PregCheck™ fertility rankings to get more females pregnant. The A.I. industry’s only data-driven fertility ranking.

The Cost of

Days Open By: Sarah Thorson, Beef Marketing and Education Manager

I am often asked how much it costs to use artificial insemination (A.I.), specifically compared to natural service. It is easy to put a pencil to paper and figure out exactly how much an A.I. pregnancy will cost compared to a natural service pregnancy. However, we should be looking at the reproductive equation from another angle. What about the lost opportunity and cost associated with each additional day a cow or heifer spends open?

18

//

HORIZONS

Ask any rancher what single trait is most important to profitability on their ranch, and they will likely say cow fertility. In a time of ever-tightening margins, a cow’s ability to have a calf, rebreed and have another calf all within a 365-day period can be the difference between profit and loss for any operation. Why is this such an important benchmark? Cows that do not maintain a yearly calving interval bring smaller, less uniform calves to the scale at weaning. Those cows tend to fall further behind, eventually ending up open and in the cull pen. This leads to a need for more replacement females, which increases heifer development costs.

One of the easiest ways to achieve a 365-day calving interval is to have more calves born earlier in the calving season.

Have you ever wanted to compare your operation to others? Several benchmarking programs are available for measurable production traits that directly affect profitability. One such program, Cow Herd Appraisal Performance Software (CHAPS), offered through North Dakota State University Extension Service, published their most recent set of benchmarks in September 2016 (Table 1). These benchmarks are calculated from five-year rolling benchmark values for average herd performance. Table 1.

Calves born earlier are heavier and more uniform at weaning.

One advantage of timed A.I. is the ability to have 60% of your cow herd pregnant on the first day of breeding, which, of course, leads to more calves born earlier. At the University of Missouri Thompson Farm, calf crop distribution was analyzed for the first 46 days over 11 calving seasons. There were three years of natural service breeding that included 526 calvings, three years of fixedtime A.I. with 585 calvings, and five years of estrus detection and A.I. with 1,040 calvings. On day 16 of the calving season, 38% of the natural service cows had calved, 54% of the estrus detection and A.I. cows had calved, and 62% of the fixed-time A.I. cows had calved. By day 21 of the calving season those numbers were 51%, 59% and 66% respectively.1 What is the true value of fewer days open? Using the data in Table 1, calves gain, on average, 2.45 pounds per day. This means at weaning a calf born on the first day of calving season weighs 50 lbs. more than a calf born on day 21 and 100 lbs. more than a calf born on day 42. If calves are worth $1.40 per pound, that’s $70 and $140 more just for calves born earlier. An additional advantage is your calf crop will be more uniform, making them more attractive to buyers. Fewer days open and more calves born earlier in the calving season is a sure way to boost your bottom line. If you have any questions about implementing a successful timed A.I. program on your operation, please contact your local GENEX representative.  (1) Patterson, D. J. et al. “Control Of Estrus Ovulation In Beef Cows”. 2016. Presentation.

Having nearly 63% of your cow herd calve within the first 21 days of calving can be a daunting task, one that is dependent on many factors. HORIZONS

Using A.I. on Your Ranch By: Justin Hergenreder, Large Herd Development Manager

What is it costing you by not utilizing synchronization and A.I.? More uniform calf crop Calves born earlier in the breeding season Fewer days open

95 cents compared to $2.28 per gallon – that’s the difference 30 years have made in the price of a gallon of gas. Just as gas prices have changed drastically, so have the wants and demands of cattle producers. Producers considering artificial insemination (A.I.) have many of the same concerns and wants for their program. I’m here to lay those concerns to rest and show how A.I. and GENEX chute-side service will make you money and propel you into the future. So slap some bacon on a biscuit and let’s go! We’re burning daylight.

Cost Cost is always the first question. First of all, you need to sit down with your GENEX representative and determine the best plan for your operation. Costs will vary depending on herd size, location and labor needs. In most cases A.I. is cheaper than buying, maintaining and utilizing a bull for two to five years. Remember these costs will vary: Eazi-Breed™ CIDR® – $11 GnRH – $5 ($2.5x2) PG – $3 ESTROTECT™ – $1.30 Semen – $20 Breeding Service Fee – $10

The process Working with your GENEX representative, you will make a detailed plan for your A.I. project, including choosing a synchronization protocol that fits your operation. In order for synchronization to be successful on your ranch, you must commit to learning the protocol and executing it exactly, this means making sure the right cows, get the right shots, on the

right days. On breeding day, you get the cattle to the alley way and GENEX takes care of the rest.

Sires Ask the professionals: GENEX strives to bring you the best of the best for bull power. Visit with your local representative to determine the sires best suited for your goals.

Calving season Just because you bred your cows in a 4-hour period does not mean they will calve in a 4-hour period! After a successful A.I. program, expect females to calve in a 10- to 14-day period. University studies have shown no more than 20% of your herd will calve on any one day.

How many clean-up bulls will I need after A.I.? This question is highly variable. The answer has a lot to do with the age of your bulls, size of pastures, environment and number of females. and environment. GENEX staff can provide the correct recommendation to ensure you turn out enough bull power to cover the non-A.I. females. A.I. is one of the most beneficial and easiest ways to make your cow herd more profitable. With beef prices where they are, every pregnancy counts and every early calf means more pounds. More pounds = more DOLLARS! Utilizing A.I. will tighten your calving interval, add performance to your calf crop and allow you to actively control the type of cattle you raise. When you are ready to set up an A.I. program, contact your GENEX representative. GENEX is here to help add dollars to your program. 
