Beef Genetic Management Guide

delegates, we are ready! The new line-up of sires has to be our strongest ever, with bulls to meet any producer’s need. Do you want calving ease, growth or carcass traits, or all of them? As you look through this Beef Genetic Management Guide, you will find a group of bulls that will fit your herd’s needs.

At Genex we have always been focused on profitability. We have a vested interest in how our members are doing financially. After all, they are the owners of the cooperative and our goals are to make them successful and sustainable. In our sire procurement efforts, we look for bulls that fit market segments, while keeping balance and marketability in mind. Willie Altenburg

Chad Ellingson

Brad Johnson

A part of our vested interest in bringing top genetics to producers is a commitment to help utilize those genetics in the best way possible. Our goal is to maximize the genetic impact of our bulls by breeding them to cows they complement best. There are a host of EPD rankings available for each breed, along with indexes for several of the breeds. And for the last several years, we have provided Beef Staff Recommendations for where the bulls will work best from a conformation standpoint. The Genex Beef Staff Recommendation data is intended to help breeders make the best use of bulls. It is not intended to be used as a selection criteria for which bulls should be used in a breeding program, but rather as a guideline in deciding which cows should be bred to which bulls. In most conformation traits, the intermediate level provides the greatest longevity. For example, cows with too much or too little leg set will probably not last as long as those with intermediate set. Whether a bull is above the midpoint or below the midpoint may not be important. Don’t eliminate a bull from your program because he is below the midpoint on a particular trait. He may be the perfect fit for some of your cows! And remember, selection toward an intermediate is probably your best approach. We encourage you to take advantage of all the tools available. We recommend using the indexes available for Angus, Simmental and Hereford to screen bulls to fit your program. Utilize individual EPDs in refining the search to get the bulls that best fit your program and unique programs, and then use the “Staff Recommendations” to best utilize the bulls within your herd to maximize those genetics. The end result should combine the best in “science” with the “eye of the master” in cattle breeding. We look forward to working with you in 2007! Have a great year!

Genex Beef... Combining Cow Sense... H

oward Hillman grew up on the family farm, Bon View Farm in eastern South Dakota. He attended South Dakota State University and graduated with an animal science degree in 1963. After graduation he returned to the farm and Howard Hillman became a managing partner in the diversified farming and ranching family operation. He has judged most major shows throughout the U.S. Bon View Farm showed cattle for many years and was successful in the showring, showing grand champion bull at the International Livestock Expo in Chicago in 1969 and 1974 and the grand champion bull at the 1975 National Western Stock Show in Denver. They bred and raised bulls that have led the Angus breed in number of calves registered for the years 2003 through 2006. Bon View Farm dispersed in 1999; however with Howard’s passion for the industry he has maintained a connection with the business and served on the American Angus Association (AAA) board of directors for eight years, serving as president in 2000. Howard has also served on boards of local and state associations. Recently he was named committee chairman for the Angus Foundation’s Vision of Value Campaign for Angus Fund Drive which is dedicated to education, youth and research. Making progress, meeting goals, having a marketing plan and being profitable are all part of the equation of a successful operation. Bon View Farm achieved this success because of the emphasis put on functional cattle. The following is Howard’s view on the importance of using a practical, common sense approach to cattle breeding, blending the use of cow sense and science. “The opportunity to breed cattle is ever present…the challenge is knowing where the industry is and the vision to know where it is headed to breed cattle for the times. It takes common sense and cow sense but provides many opportunities using the tools available.” – Howard Hillman, Bon View Farm

The Essentials of Functional Cattle

Functional cattle were essential for our operation, if a cow required extra time or labor, there was a good chance that female didn’t get to stay in the program. To maintain a functional cow herd, certain criteria were taken into consideration. We were pretty tough and didn’t have much tolerance for poor udders. If there was a female that required extra time and labor to get a new calf started nursing due to udder quality, we didn’t keep her in our program the following year. In a young female, having a level udder with small well-placed teats is a priority. A sound udder at a young age will most likely maintain that quality as an aged female. In our environment cattle traveled large pastures, so it was essential for them to have a good-shaped, sound foot and leg structure with moderate set. We didn’t want cattle with feet that restricted travel or required maintenance or trimming.

34

Fleshing ability was important in order to survive cold winters as well as dry summers. If all animals in a contemporary group were treated alike, then any poor doing animals would be eliminated. We always felt having a female that maintained flesh in cold and dry conditions was important for her to survive and produce. Another trait we took into consideration was disposition. If an animal had an unacceptable disposition, they were eliminated.

A Necessary Balance

Most of the traits I’ve talked about so far are really subjective to a person’s visual evaluation. If you eliminate some of these problems, it lets you focus on other economical traits or numbers. There are some people who probably feel you can breed by the numbers, I still feel a visual evaluation of afore mentioned traits is necessary in addition to using EPDs. There are too many undesirable traits that are kept if you strictly breed by the numbers. The sire evaluation database at the AAA is unequal to any other in the world. The EPDs are extremely dependable, especially when used with higher accuracies. You can believe in them and trust what they do, and it’s possible to make rapid progress. I put a high emphasis on EPDs, because it is such a great database with all of the information it includes along with its’ predictions and reliability. However, a program has to have a balance between using EPDs and evaluating physical attributes. The bottom line is when you cull a small percentage of the herd that didn’t meet the criteria; you’ve increased overall uniformity in the entire cow herd. To further improve on uniformity, both phenotypically and genotypically, one should consider multiple trait selection rather than placing emphasis on a single trait.

Advice for Success

For those who are new to the cattle industry, there are many things to learn and strive toward in order to be successful. Success in breeding cattle won’t come overnight; it takes hard work and dedication. Make sure to keep abreast of issues in the industry, you need to be involved in local, state and national associations. Use programs and databases from the AAA to help make progress in breeding cattle possible. The knowledge of how to use these tools will be necessary. In addition, keep and provide accurate and meaningful records. Buy cattle and take advice from breeders you respect and trust. It’s important to maintain integrity in all you do and back up your product. It is helpful in breeding cattle to be able to recognize how an animal needs to be changed phenotypically or by the numbers. Some people will have that ability and others will need to develop it. It will take knowledge of the business and it will be challenging, but the success of breeding superior livestock makes it rewarding. You have the opportunity to meet a lot of wonderful people in this business. But most of all … enjoy what you’re doing!

... with Science “M Tom Field

y grandfather had herd inventory, phenotype, maybe a scale and a bunch of nurse cows, and that’s how he made his choices. I bet he would be blown away at what tools are in our hands today.” – Tom Field, professor, Beef Cattle Management Systems, Colorado State University

When we step back and look at the tools available to today’s cattlemen, it’s unbelievable to see how far we’ve come. Innovations in DNA technology and the use of ultrasound and color analysis systems in packing plants have lead to a very dynamic world in which to make choices. Looking further down the road, it’s exciting to think of where we’re headed.

Making Good Decisions

The ability to make meaningful comparisons across herds, environments and even continents changes our ability to make good decisions. Today, we have access to artificial insemination and embryo transfer allowing producers to access genetics they previously couldn’t afford. These innovations have made it possible for small and mid-size breeders to compete with large breeders on a product quality scale. They have access to genetics and tools on a smaller scale, yet have the ability to ramp up progress and make significant changes in a population. If you look at the top 10 sires in any breed, you’ll find they don’t all come from the same place or big herds. Even the 100-head cow/calf seedstock herd has the chance to produce bulls recognized by Genex. There is more motivation to use the tools available because producers can create a very successful program regardless of their herd size.

The Future of Science

It wasn’t that long ago the use of a scale and adjusted weight formulas were quantum leaps in genetic improvement. Today we have access to a wide array of expected progeny differences available through national animal evaluation programs. The single most important asset of the breed associations is the performance database. Collectively, these databases hold the industry’s future ability to create cattle that are in harmony with their physical environments while producing products that not only satisfy the palates of consumers, but potentially provide significant health enhancements. The challenge for producers is to deal with the volume of EPDs and data available.

to specific ranches. The solution for a ranch in central Nevada won’t be the same as a farm in southwestern Iowa. It’s exciting to think about having choices best suited for the situation instead of a “one size fits all” industry. With this system, a seedstock producer should be able to provide a list of specific bulls that fit their customer’s needs. A producer may find a customer’s needs can’t be met from his or her own herd. However, by being networked, a seedstock producer will be able to send that customer to a partner firm that is better suited for the client’s unique needs. We will get to a point where true customization will focus on the needs and goals of the customer.

Communication

As an industry, the best opportunity we have to be more profitable and better at what we do is to enhance the conversation between sectors of business. The most important conversations are between the seedstock producer and cow/calf customer. “What do you need? Why do you need it? What combination of traits do you need?” As a result, we will be able to deliver genetics and information customized to the client’s needs. Currently most of these conversations occur on sale day, and that’s a little too late, especially as the industry moves to supply chain strategies. Retailers and food services are moving their businesses from the notion of providing nourishment to creating memorable and fantastic experiences. Ingredient providers, especially “center of the plate” players such as the beef industry, will have to provide a great tasting product and back that product with effective communication on how the steak was produced. We have more tools available today than ever before - video imaging analysis, cameras in packing houses, DNA tests, tenderness data coupled with ultrasound and data communication systems are just some of the innovations. While we need to reduce inconsistencies in beef, to date we haven’t had the tools to do this. In the future we will be able to reduce inconsistencies specific to desired supply chain outcomes. It’s not a one size fits all market, beef is a flexible, adaptable product for many consumer markets. We have the opportunity to create a communication system up and down the beef production chain that allows continuous improvements while more effectively engaging consumers in the amazing story of the farm and ranch families who provide for the rest of society.

The Big Picture

However, as decision support technology software evolves, the tools will seem less overwhelming. We will begin to see customized selection strategies and tools that meet the goals of breeders and their customers.

As an industry, if we could break out of the commodity mindset because profits are driven by pride of ownership, value added management, engagement with consumers and brand loyalty, then producers would be in control of their own destiny. At the end of the day, life is about the pursuit of our dreams. For all of the challenges we face, there are wonderful opportunities for this industry if we have the conviction and courage to make real the future we envision.

Customization and decision support software will allow us to input specific data points such as weather patterns, pathogen loads, and other information pertinent to the herd, its specific challenges and limitations. Software packages will interface with genetic databases on a global scale to generate sires and mating systems best suited

Since 1989 Tom Field has worked at Colorado State University, holding positions of assistant professor, associate professor and currently a professor of Beef Cattle Management Systems. In this position, he has served on many boards and committees. He was a member of the research team that developed the standards for Certified Hereford Beef, facilitated the development of a strategic plan for the American Shorthorn Association, co-authored the best-selling beef cattle production reference – Beef Production & Management Decision, and co-authored the animal sciences text – Scientific Farm Animal Production.

RED ANGUS 43

Why Synchronize and A.I.? I

Bill Beal

n the beef industry we all do different things for different reasons. Using estrus synchronization and A.I. is just another choice that some folks make and others don’t. While a convincing, logical argument can be made for the VALUE of synchronization and A.I., it’s often other factors that tip the balance when making the decision to use synchronization and A.I.

Why I’m using synchronization and A.I. if I am a commercial beef producer:

There is no better way to build a cow herd that you can be proud of than by using A.I. sires. Be honest, most commercial cattleman are in the business to have better cattle than their neighbors. That may mean cows that wean more pounds of calf or return higher premiums on retained ownership cattle. Either way, you get there faster keeping the A.I.-sired heifers out of your best cows. Frankly, with the success of timed breeding after using an MGAor CIDR-based synchronization scheme, it’s crazy not to synchronize commercial cows on the front-end of a breeding season and take at least one shot at A.I.

“Bottom line, synchronization and A.I. are the tools needed to build a better commercial cow!”

Using the recommended synchronization programs you can realistically expect to get 50% of your cows or heifers bred using timed A.I. and running them through the chute just two or three times. I’m greedy – I’d rather heat detect and breed A.I. for three days and then time breed all the non-responders rather than use timed A.I. alone. I figure I’m trading three days of labor for an extra 5 – 10 % pregnancy rate.

xx XX 44

By Bill Beal, Professor of Animal Science, Virginia Tech

Bottom line, synchronization and A.I. are the tools needed to build a better commercial cow!

Why I’m using synchronization and A.I. if I am a purebred breeder:

The purebred beef cattle business is a competitive ball game. Sure, advertising, reputation and customer service are all important to the successful marketing of purebred cattle, but you better begin by having the best product. You and I can’t compete with other purebred breeders unless we use proven A.I. bulls with the best EPDs.

“We can’t compete with other purebred breeders unless we use proven A.I. bulls.” Bull buyers don’t just use their eyes to pick bulls anymore. More of them come with a list of EPD “specs” than ever before – they want it all. We can give them the growth, carcass and maternal traits they want in the right visual package if we stack pedigrees of proven A.I. sires. It’s not a difficult concept to understand. Using estrus synchronization and an A.I. program that includes breeding on return heats for cows that fail to become pregnant to the first synchronized breeding can result in more than 75% of the cow herd bred A.I. in 25 days. This results in more bull calves from known A.I. sires that can go on to compete at bull test station or be put together to meet the specifications of discriminating bull buyers. Synchronization and A.I. provide the competitive advantage needed to succeed in the purebred business.

The Future — Proven Bulls

T

Kris Ringwall

here is nothing more relevant or futuristic in the beef business than a good discussion about buying bulls. This involves a process of selection that impacts the foundation of individual beef herds and the essence of the beef industry. As the discussion deepens, the concept of proven bulls has to evolve.

Purchasing semen from bulls that have proven themselves in regards to the quality of cattle is easily evident within producer herds. A bigger issue is that the quality of beef raised and made available to the consumer is absolutely critical.

By Kris Ringwall, North Dakota State University, Extension Beef Specialist

All of these issues sum up to one thing; the beef business is simply no longer breed’em, feed’em and eat’em. If there is a common thread to all the issues, it is individual producer responsibility. The future will mandate aggressive producer engagement in business concepts and managerial analytical techniques that are going to assure a position within a very competitive, worldwide consumer market. Much that happens on our individual operations must feed into a larger system and even the large systems we feed into, ultimately feed into even larger systems.

Proven bulls, not just bulls are the key ingredient. Proven bulls assure that the right pieces are in the mix to allow management to fine-tune the ultimate product, beef. The industry’s reputation and future depend on these bulls.

The ability to cash flow may be very local, income minu expenses, but the ability to survive as a viable beef operation on into the future really needs to be much broader. The opportunities for the future start this spring, following calving, when the cows are rebred.

Although not always noted in cattle discussions, the fundamental principle producers must accept is that cattle belong to producers and beef belongs to consumers. The magnitude of that statement really stands out, and should stand out as producers look to the future.

The bull must fit the industry. The bull needs to have proven data that fits not only producer expectations, but meets strong consumer demands. There really is no room for mistakes.

Each year brings new and exciting thoughts and promises along with a reasonable dose of reality. The future is really now. Those thoughts, promises and projected reality were encapsulated very well in an electronic journal (Volume 21, No. 3, 2006) entitled Choices (www.choicesmagazine.org) published by the American Agricultural Economics Association. The discussion was pointed. In the future, promises will only out weigh reality if as cattle producers, we grab ‘the bull by the horns’ and sit up, listen and change. The series of articles identified issues that will ultimately shape our industry and included discussions on markets, structure, and competition; value of integrated markets and consumer demand; global competitiveness; environmental concerns and regulations; community concerns and labor; food safety and animal health; and the welfare and care of animals.

The product ultimately placed on a consumer’s plate is a product of a bull, a bull that was evaluated, reevaluated and ultimately selected as the sire of beef. The beef is destined to arrive at a targeted palate that has, as an end result, a very personal experience of taste and flavor, in other words, a great eating experience. Cattle producers are in the beef business, but we do need to remind ourselves of the significance of that statement. The future is the responsibility of all. For beef producers, now is the time to visit with your local genetics company and key seed stock producers. This planning can arrange for bulls that will bring assurance to the breeding program, which can offer assurance to the production system and ultimately place quality beef on consumer’s plates.

An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability. BF (Back Fat) - (Simmental) Inches of backfat. BW (Birth Weight) - The birth weights of a bull’s progeny when compared to the breed average, in pounds. CE (Calving Ease) - (Simmental) The ease with which a bull’s calves are born. This EPD is expressed in percent unassisted births with the more positive number indicating greater calving ease. CED (Calving Ease Direct) - (Angus, Red Angus, Hereford) Expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. CEM, MCE (Calving Ease Maternal, Maternal Calving Ease) (Angus, Simmental) Expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. CETM (Calving Ease Total Maternal) - (Red Angus, Hereford) Describes differences in percent probability of an animal’s daughters calving unassisted. CW (Carcass Weight) - (Charolais, Simmental) The adjusted carcass weights of a sire’s progeny, expressed in pounds. DHT - (Simmental) Daughter Height expressed in frame score units. DWT - (Simmental) Daughter Weight epressed in pounds FAT - (Angus, Red Angus, Charolais, Hereford) The adjusted twelfth rib fat thickness of a sire’s progeny, expressed in inches. %IMF (Intramuscular Fat)- (Angus) A predictor of the difference in a sire’s progeny for percent intramuscular fat in the ribeye muscle compared to other sires. HPG (Heifer Pregnancy) - (Red Angus) Describes the differences in percent probability of female progeny conceiving to calve as 2-year-olds; a far more accurate measurement than her sire’s or paternal brothers’ scrotal circumference. Intramuscular ME (Maintenance Energy) - (Red Angus) Differences in mature cow maintenance energy requirements. It is expressed as megacalories per month. MB, MARB (Marbling) - (Simmental, Charolais, Red Angus) The adjusted marbling score of a sire’s progeny, expressed in percent. MH (Mature Height) - (Angus) Expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires. MkH (Herds) - (Angus) Indicates the number of herds from which daughters are reported. MkD (Daughters) - (Angus) Reflects the number of daughters having progeny weaning weight records included in the analysis. MW (Mature Weight) - (Angus) Expressed in pounds, a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires. M&G (Maternal Milk & Growth) - (Hereford) A combination EPD, the Milk EPD plus 1/2 the WW EPD. It has no accuracy value since it is simply a combination of two other EPDs. A sire’s M&G EPD reflects what he is expected to transmit to his daughters for a combination of both growth genetics and maternal production.

70 TERMINOLOGY

Milk, MM - (Angus, Red Angus, Simmental, Charolais, Hereford) A measure of the amount of pre-weaning performance gained by calves which can be attributed to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters. The EPD is expressed in pounds of calf. P (Pedigree estimate), I (Interim) - The EPD is based on performance information of a bull’s sire, dam, and relatives. REA, RE (Rib Eye Area) - (Angus, Red Angus, Charolais, Hereford) Adjusted rib eye area of a sire’s progeny, measured in square inches. SCR, SC (Scrotal Circumference) - (Angus, Simmental) The adjusted yearling scrotal circumferences of a bull’s progeny when compared to breed average, in centimeters. SHR (Shear Force) - (Simmental) Pounds of force required to shear a steak. STAY (Stayability) - (Red Angus) Describes differences in percent probability of daughters staying productive past the age of six. TM, MWW (Total Maternal, Maternal Weaning Weight) - (Charolais, Red Angus, Simmental) Each of these terms measures a sire’s ability to transmit milk production and growth rate through his daughters. It predicts the weaning weight of a sire’s daughters’ calves. It is equal to his milk EPD plus one - half his weaning weight EPD. WW ( Weaning Weight) - The adjusted weaning weights of a bull’s progeny when compared to the breed average, in pounds. YG (Yield Grade) (formerly %RC - Percent Retail Cuts) - (Simmental) Expressed as a deviation of Yield Grade units where negative values are desirable. For example, a bull with a -.33 YG EPD would be expected to sire offspring 1/3 of a yield grade better (lower) than a zero bull. YW (Yearling Weight) - The adjusted yearling weights of a bull’s progeny when compared to breed average, in pounds.

Indexes $F (Feedlot Value) - (Angus) Calculates a $/head difference in expected progeny performance for post weaning merit. $F uses weaning weight (WW) and yearling weight (YW) EPDs along with trait inter-relationships. Typical feed-lot gain value, feed consumption and cost differences are accounted for in the final calculations. $G (Grid Value) - (Angus) Combines quality grade and yield grade attributes, and is calculated for animals with carcass EPDs, ultrasound EPDs, or both types of EPDs. A three-year rolling average is used to establish typical industry economic values for quality grade and yield grade schedules. $B (Beef Value) - (Angus) Represents the expected average dollar per head difference in the progeny post weaning performance and carcass value. The $B value is comprised of two pieces: Feedlot Value ($F) and Grid Value ($G). It facilitates a simultaneous multi - trait genetic improvement for feedlot and carcass merit, based on dollars and cents. $W (Weaned Calf Value) - (Angus) An index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size. $EN (Cow Energy Value) - (Angus) Expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. All-Purpose Index (API) - (Simmental) Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI) - (Simmental) Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Baldy Maternal Index (BMI$) - (Hereford) An index to maximize profit for commercial cow-calf producers who use Hereford bulls in rotational crossbreeding programs on Angus-based cows and heifers. Retained ownership of calves through the feedlot phase of production is assumed, with fed cattle marketed on a Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) LLC pricing grid. Brahman Influence Index (BII$) - (Hereford) This index is similar to BMI$, with one difference - Hereford bulls are used in rotational crossing with Brahman, rather than Angus. This index places greater emphasis on traits deficient in Brahman-cross cattle, such as fertility and age at puberty, and less on traits more acceptable in those cattle, such as growth and calving ease. Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$) - (Hereford) A terminal sire index, where Hereford bulls are mated to British-cross cows and all offspring are sold as fed cattle on a CHB LLC pricing grid. Calving EZ Index (CEZ$) - (Hereford) This index is similar to BMI$, except Hereford bulls are mated only to yearling heifers. This index has increased emphasis on direct and maternal calving ease compared with the other indexes. The index values for each animal result from multiplying each of the animal’s EPDs by the relative economic value of a one-unit increase in the trait under each scenario.

Sire Information

Homozygous Polled - These bulls have a 99.9 percent probability of being homozygous polled, having been test mated to horned and heterozygous polled cows. Expect these bulls to sire all polled calves. Heterozygous Polled - These bulls are polled but carry one horned gene. May sire calves with horns when mated to cows carrying the horned gene. Double Polled - These bulls are young, unproven sires whose parents are both polled. Homozygous Black - These bulls have a 99.9 percent probability of producing all black calves when mated to non-diluted red and black cows. Heterozygous Black - These sires are black, but carry one red gene. Expect 50 percent black calves when the bull is mated to non-diluted red cows. Dilution Gene - Cattle carrying the dilution gene will be gray, red or yellow. Non-dilutor cattle will appear black or darker red.

Cashing in on Artificial Insemination Increase Uniformity, Profits with A.I. Program Reproductive control programs in combination

with artificial insemination are arguably the most valuable tools available to beef producers for meeting production, uniformity and economic goals. Not only does the cost of A.I. compare favorably to natural breeding, it also lends to significant gains in total pounds at weaning, genetic superiority and marketing value of the calf crop. Every year, more cattlemen are reducing their per cow pregnancy costs by as much as one-third by incorporating A.I.. And with solid management plans, these producers can typically achieve expectations of natural breeding and realize significant dollar gains at market time. The benefits of A.I. are well-documented, but successful programs don’t happen overnight. They result from careful planning and good management. There are several factors that contribute to successful A.I. breeding, including:

✔ efficient record keeping

✔ good cattle handling facilities

✔ solid nutritional program

✔ overall herd health program

✔ estrus synchronization program

✔ accurate heat detection

✔ well trained A.I. technician

Synchronizing Your A.I. Solutions The most important challenges with A.I. programs

are estrus synchronization and dealing with anestrous or non-cycling cows. The first step to overcoming anestrous is ensuring cows have adequate nutrition. Nutrition has an immediate and dramatic effect on reproduction. Cows must be in good body condition and have ample nutrition prior to calving and during postpartum. Good body condition scores at the onset of breeding season are typically associated with greater rates of cycling activity. If nutrition is compromised during this time, the percentage of anestrous cows at the start of breeding season will increase dramatically. And the length of anestrous periods will be much longer. Estrus synchronization is equally important, and fundamental to the success of an A.I. program. Fortunately, there are tools available that make synchronization a reality and not just a concept. The most widely used synchronization tools are the EaziBreed™ CIDR® Cattle Insert and Lutalyse® (dinoprost tromethamine) Sterile Solution. The Eazi-Breed CIDR (Controlled Internal Drug Release) is a small, easy to use, intravaginal device that contains the natural hormone progesterone. When the Eazi-Breed CIDR is inserted, progesterone is released at a controlled rate into the animal’s bloodstream, suppressing estrus and ovulation. Removing the insert and administering Lutalyse causes progesterone levels to drop, which triggers estrus and ovulation, as shown in Table 1. Consequently, Eazi-Breed CIDRs enable producers to craft a narrow window of synchronization for a large number of cows, making the breeding program more efficient and effective. When used with a prostaglandin like Lutalyse, which regresses the corpus luteum, the Eazi-Breed

CIDR effectively builds a timed breeding program. This combination also accelerates puberty in virgin heifers. Research has shown that the Eazi-Breed CIDR/ Lutalyse combination can dramatically increase the synchronization and pregnancy rates of both anestrous and cyclic cows, as shown in Table 2. By synchronizing estrus, more cows can be bred successfully early in the season. And good things happen when cows get pregnant early in the breeding season. Considering a 60-day breeding season and calf weight gain rates of two pounds per day, calves born on the first day of the season will rack up 120 pounds more than those born on the last day of the season. Synchronization allows producers to capture weight gains and increase overall ROI by moving the average calving date to the beginning of the season.

Table 1

Table 2

Add to that a shorter calving season and more uniformity among calf crop and the benefits of A.I. begin to stack up. Traditionally, one of the biggest problems facing the beef industry has been the lack of uniform, high-quality product. By delivering superior genetics, A.I. enables producers to solve their uniformity problems in one or two generations and rapidly improve economic traits within their herds. For more information about artificial insemination, contact your Genex Representative or call (715) 526-2141. When using Lutalyse, as with all parenteral products, aseptic technique should be used to reduce the possibility of post-injection bacterial infections. Do not administer Lutalyse in pregnant animals unless cessation of pregnancy is desired. Not for intravenous administration. Women of childbearing age and persons with respiratory problems should exercise extreme caution when handling Lutalyse.

Beef Breeding Checklist: • Make sure cows and heifers have adequate body condition to support pregnancy. A body condition score of 6 on a scale of 1 to 9 is recommended. • Supply adequate nutrition to all animals to support pregnancy and any additional demands such as lactation or cold weather. • Make heat detection a high priority during the time when synchronized animals are expected to show estrus. • Wait at least 40 days postpartum before starting to breed cows. • Make sure heifers are at a minimum of 65 percent of their mature body weight before starting the program. • Ask your veterinarian to examine your heifers’ reproductive tracts prior to starting the program. The goal is that most of the heifers will have a reproductive tract score of 4 or higher at the beginning of the breeding season and to eliminate heifers that will have delayed puberty. • If they are of adequate nutrition, virgin heifers should be bred 30 days earlier than the rest of the herd, which will help improve the likelihood that they will remain in the herd as second-lactation heifers. • Follow veterinarian-recommended schedules for all animals.

Genex Beef Quest Program Chad Ellingson, Beef Sire Procurement Manager, Genex Cooperative, Inc.

T

op-end genetics are worth more money now than ever before. We have witnessed some backing off of cattle prices as an industry and, at the same time, we have found there to be a larger spread between commodity cattle and cattle that have a strong genetic history. What will this mean for the future of the cattle industry? Are we in for a large change? If we review the past few years, it has been quite simple to turn a profit in the cattle business. Now that we are witnessing higher feed costs, the margin of profit is quickly tightening. This has sent a signal to all segments of the industry that we will need cattle that not only will hang a high-quality carcass on the rail, but one that will do it more efficiently with less days on feed. At Genex we started to confront the efficiency factor aggressively two years ago. At that point, we could see that in order for North America to be competitive in the world marketplace, we would need to discover what genetics could perform in the most efficient manner to make our high-quality beef cost efficient. We entered into a research project with the University of Illinois to efficiency-test large progeny groups out of some of our heaviest used Simmental and Angus sires. We are now in our second year of the project with cattle on feed

being tested for efficiency, with another group of calves in-uterine to be born and tested this year. To our knowledge, this will be the largest and most extensive efficiency project that has taken place in the United States. Since our initial agreement with the University of Illinois, the American Angus Association and the American Simmental Association have also entered into efficiency testing projects at the U of I. We feel that our sire lineup will thrive in the efficiency arena. Genex has always made sure that the genetics that we procured possess the individual performance and visual phenotype that allow them to be the easy-conversion type. Efficiency in the feedlot is not our only concern. We are striving to ensure our sires have the capability to produce daughters that will maintain themselves on limited feed resources. We know that a working cow needs to be considered part of a factory at the ranching level, where she is expected to produce high outputs while working on minimum wage. Currently, we have two large commercial test herds recording daughter low input adaptability and longevity. We are confident that this added phase of efficiency analysis in our sampling program will allow us to provide sires that will ensure our customers can turn a higher profit in every phase of the industry.
