In 1963 we adopted a comprehensive data

collection system. At that time, it seemed very complicated and forward-thinking, including the measurement of weaning weight, yearling weight and feedlot gain. As Beef Improvement Federation, state Beef Cattle Improvement Associations and breed associations adopted standards for the collection and evaluation of more traits, we quickly added those traits to our system. By the early 1980s, we were doing much more than evaluating growth - birth weight, calving ease, frame score, cow weight at weaning, udder scores, scrotal measurements and more. We began collecting carcass ultrasound data in the mid 1990s, which has been used in unison with actual progeny kill data to become a primary ingredient in the recipes of several breed association’s indexes for end-product merit. Recently, much emphasis has been put on the collection and management of data that relates to production efficiency. Historically, most breeders (myself included) have been aggressive in selecting for animals that excel at an “outlier” level for a given trait. In many cases, this has been good (appropriate) and has led to dramatic change (improvement) in lines of cattle within a breed. These outlier cattle have been well received in the marketplace, which has encouraged breeders to continue to select for extremes. Most cattle breeders would agree that today’s breed-leading animal has plenty of growth, which causes us to modify our selection pressure to reflect emphasis on an “ideal” rather than an “extreme”. Hopefully, cattle breeders will embrace the notion of “optimum”, as this will become necessary if seedstock producers are truly focused on servicing the needs of their commercial customers. With this in mind, it is absolutely essential that breeders be pro-active in submitting data that allows breed associations to generate EPDs to facilitate selection for production efficiency, particularly cow size, fertility, longevity and energy requirements. Technology to measure feed efficiency is being developed and needs to be embraced at the producer’s level. Genetic improvement in these areas is mandatory if beef producers expect to remain competitive with the pork and poultry sectors. Listening to the Customer As we listen to commercial bull customers’ future needs, it continues to be very evident that we will need to do more than breed by the numbers. Even though customers are heavily

focused on any and all data we can provide to them, many of their concerns relate to things that we are not currently able to quantify with EPDs. Good cattle people want their cattle to have a “look”, and we believe it is our responsibility (and in our financial best interest) to create good looking cattle that our most discriminating customers will admire and want to own. Fortunately, many of the phenotypic traits we select for are very fundamental to highly productive cattle. For example, soundness of structure should be paramount in any breeding program. Bulls must be able to travel big breeding pastures and cows must have long-lasting udders and running gear. In our operation, we aggressively select for fescue-tolerant cattle that are adaptable to heat and humidity. We believe that cattle capable of flourishing in this environment will also adapt very well to a more northern or western setting. An unprecedented drought in the southeast in 2007 has many of our customers asking questions about crossbreeding and ways to utilize heterosis to improve productivity, particularly in the cow herd. It is well documented that crossbreeding can be an extremely useful tool in enhancing performance and efficiency. We are encouraging our customers to develop a well thought-out strategy for utilizing the appropriate breeds or breed composites in their programs. The primary focus should always be on attaining long-term goals that will not require any “back tracking” in a breeding system. If used properly, heterosis can enhance almost every commercial cattle operation. Maintaining a Proper Perspective The role of seedstock producers as breeders involves more science in 2008 than ever before. The correct application of all this “stuff” will allow some breeders to become more successful and more competitive. However, a breeder’s ability to blend genetic selection tools with common sense is what will set apart the true breeder. One’s ability to anticipate changes in the industry and build some “lead time” into a program will always pay dividends. The beef cattle business involves many components, primarily people, cattle, government, a global economy and mother nature in many forms. The success of each of us hinges on our ability to maintain a proper perspective. n

New tools coupled with the enhancement of existing tools allows cattle breeders to make informed decisions about the direction of their genetics. At no other time in the history of beef cattle breeding has there been as much information at our disposal to enhance our position among consumers, and at the same time produce cattle which are functional and profitable. Modern Tools Science has had a profound impact on cattle breeding. We have witnessed an evolution from adjusted weights and ratios to calculation of expected progeny differences (EPDs), and now selection indexes and DNA genotyping. The principles established in collecting performance records continue to be the foundation of current tools. Therefore, the collection of performance records will continue to be vital in this new age science. The ability to make dollar and sense decisions utilizing EPDs has improved through the implementation of indexes. These tools enhance the ability to select for favorable responses in multiple traits and provide a systematic way to combine EPDs related to a common selection goal. They do so in a manner designed to capture the economic influence of each component trait. Additionally, they assist in striking a logical balance among traits. For example, many breed associations provide a carcass value index EPD. These indexes provide a tool for finding balance between carcass quality grade and yield grade component EPDs. The future will bring more tools, as well as more advanced decision-making and support systems to complement them. The mapping of the bovine genome holds promise for the future. The ability to select animals for specific gene combinations is a reality for marbling and tenderness. There are exciting opportunities in the works, with scientists mining the genome for genetic clues to enhance cattle health, efficiency, reproduction and other economically relevant traits. Most importantly are the ongoing efforts to incorporate the results of DNA tests into breed databases. DNA tests hold tremendous promise when used to enhance current selection tools and selection opportunities for traits difficult and/or very expensive to measure. Opportunities for the Seedstock Producer The large number of tools at our disposal is perhaps both our

biggest opportunity as well as challenge. New innovations add to the complexity of the decision-making process. Therefore, great opportunity is at hand for seedstock suppliers who communicate with cow-calf producers and other partners in the supply chain. We have all been asked “which is the best bull?” The response cannot be in a manner which fits all needs. If we consider the question in the context “which is the right bull for my situation?” we define the parameters that warrant consideration. The focus should be on effective strategies that allow the right bull to be designed and identified. The industry is characterized by diversity in production environment, herd size and consumer needs. Working with cow-calf producers to understand their goals and needs, and designing genetics to fit needs today and in the future is key. At the same time, one must keep abreast of the dynamic, ever-changing global economy influencing agriculture. Herd goals and objectives serve as the foundation for sire selection and provide guidance for traits with the most economic relevance. The production and marketing system along with management strategies and environment are key factors that warrant consideration. Within each of these considerations, solid record-keeping strategies provide necessary information. Priorities should be established based on factors which have the largest impact on profitability. Performance is a function of both genetics and environment, compatibility of genetics to forage resources, feed quality and quantity and management is key. Our success is dependent on providing safe, nutritious, consistent products to consumers who are interested in the process of delivering the product to their plate. Beef is a flexible product, with numerous attributes desired in the marketplace. Therefore, not all beef needs to be the same, yet must be produced with a viable target market driven by consumer expectations. The Future and Beyond We are in the midst of the most exciting times in the beef business. Never before has there been more opportunity to derive added value for producing a superior product throughout the supply chain. This is true for the seedstock supplier providing genetics to the cow-calf producer, as well as the cow-calf producer, stocker operator, feedyard operator and processor. The opportunity to create value by communicating and working together has never been greater. n

Profitable cow-calf production depends on producers

Larry Berger, professor of Animal Science, suggests that measuring residual feed intake (RFI) is a more accurate indicator of biological feeding efficiency. RFI is the difference between an animal’s actual feed intake and it’s expected feed intake, based on its size and growth over a specific test period. RFI is moderately heritable (0.30-0.45) and may reflect an animal’s maintenance energy requirement. RFI appears to be independent of body size and growth rate. Dan Faulkner, professor of Animal Science, is investigating ration effects on efficiency specifically addressing the question, “Does an efficient bull on a grain diet have daughters that are efficient on forage diets?” Half-sib comparisons and long-term cow production trials will address these questions. Combining GrowSafe and ultrasound technologies allows for feed efficiency comparisons at different endpoints. From these data, new genetic markers may be discovered and offer opportunities for increased accuracy in identifying the most efficient cattle.

In 2004, the University of Illinois opened a feedlot research facility that includes the GrowSafe feeding system with a capacity to collect individual feed efficiency data on over 900 head at one time. This system is the largest in North America and offers large-scale opportunities for feed efficiency research. The University of Illinois has partnered with the American Angus Association and the American Simmental Association on large-scale, multi-year sire evaluations to identify sire differences not only in feed efficiency, but also classic calf performance and carcass traits (including tenderness). The resulting database of measurements will provide a better understanding of genetic and environmental components that influence traits of economic importance to the beef industry. Specifically, researchers hope this will lead to enhanced expected progeny difference calculations including the bio-economic assessments offered by breed associations. Several bull studs have provided semen as part of the database development. Genex Cooperative, Inc. was an early participant in projects where various sires were used on purebred Angus and Simmental cows and then in large commercial sire evaluation projects.

Doug Parrett, professor of Animal Science, states, “A purebred producer’s goal is to produce predictable, reliable genetics for his commercial customers. The seedstock industry has a responsibility to raise cattle that can offer advantages in efficiency of production. Industry partnerships, like with Genex Cooperative, Inc., enable our research to incorporate industry leading genetics into discovery research. Information is power and increases the accuracy of selection. Those who use and balance the information will stay in the lead in the beef cattle industry.” n

managing their operations efficiently. Efficiency can depend on economical management decisions or be enhanced by selecting for biological differences in the animals in their production system. Simply stated, efficiency is squeezing more profit out of the same set of resources while facing higher costs. Much of this challenge is due to rising feed costs. Feed cost accounts for 60-75 percent of beef production and these costs have a large impact on a producer’s profitability. Historically, there has been little done by producers to identify the biological differences in animal efficiencies. This was due to the expensive facilities for individual animal feeding, the high labor requirements and the difficulties to compare animal growth at similar body compositions. Currently, the GrowSafe feeding systems, radio frequency ID tags and ultrasound technology offer opportunities for expanded research in identifying biological differences in feed efficiency among beef animals.

From a Packers Perspective

As the value-based procurement manager for Swift by morning, Tim Schiefelbein is a self-proclaimed “DRP” (dirty, rotten packer). But, by afternoon, the Kimball, Minn., native returns to his other job as a working partner in his family’s cow-calf, seedstock and feeding operation. Before returning to Minnesota and assuming his current positions, Schiefelbein was stationed at Swift’s Greeley, Colo., headquarters and worked as its head buyer, purchasing about 5 million head of cattle a year. The other credit Schiefelbein has to his name: he developed the industry’s first value-based grids, which revolutionized the way cattle are bought and sold today. Creating Demand The broad experience has given him a unique perspective about the kind of cattle that packers and their customers want and that make money for grassroots cattle producers. If you want to produce something with value to it, the first thing to do is to know who your customer is and produce what that customer wants. Cow-calf producers cannot be satisfied to simply meet the needs of their initial customer, the feeder. They must also be concerned with satisfying the needs of the feeder’s customer, the packer, and the packer’s customers, retailers and restaurateurs, and, ultimately, the consumer. There are a lot of customers to worry about, plus you’ve got to make them calve easy, flesh easily and breed right back every year. The good news is that efficient ranch cattle can be exactly what your customers want, and if you produce what your customer wants, you’re going to get more money for your cattle.

54 FROM A PACKERS PERSPECTIVE

While there are different kinds of feeders, all of them want healthy cattle. No one wants to mess around with sick calves, they don’t gain well and don’t grade well. Feeders also want calves to grow fast and big. After those criteria are met, some feeders, or “commodity feeders,” are satisfied with cattle with an adequate carcass. They feel they don’t have to be great, just good enough so the packer will buy them. A value-added feeder, on the other hand, wants a premium carcass and will pay more money to get one because he is selling on a value-based grid. That wasn’t always the case. Until the mid-1990s, when the “value-based revolution” began, companies paid the same for good cattle and poor cattle. They were buying all the Select, Yield Grade 1s and paying $120 and buying all the Choice, Yield Grade 1s and paying $120. There was no incentive to make your cattle better. I decided if we paid more money for better cattle, then we might get better cattle and began developing the industry’s first value-based grids, which reward cattle with desirable traits, such as high marbling and high yielding carcasses, and discount those with undesirable traits. The best way to figure out what the packer wants when is to study the historical Choice-Select spread, which shows the difference in value between these two common grades. This is a big driver to me, because when I sell to my customer, the retailer, that’s how he is paying me. Typically, in January, packers have all the Choice cattle they need, so the Choice-Select spread is low, and the guy who has all the Choice cattle gets paid more [than if he had Select cattle], but not that much more. The Choice-Select spread tends to widen in April, May and June, when there are typically more Select cattle being slaughtered. Choice beef

is in high demand this time of year because it’s barbecue season and consumers want to impress their friends with a good steak.

Basic concepts, like selecting the right bulls, making sure cattle fit your operation first and foremost and keeping them healthy are still critical to a producer’s bottomline.

Know Your Cattle and Your Market Knowing the typical seasonal differences in the Choice-Select spread can help producers decide how much emphasis they need to place on carcass traits when they are making breeding decisions. If you slaughter at a time when Choice cattle are scarce, make sure your cattle grade well to make the most money.

And even those things lose their importance if producers don’t stand behind their cattle and develop a relationship with their customers. Relationships are key, you can stand out from others by saying thanks when you sell your calves, part way through the feeding period call and ask if the calves are healthy, and, of course, they are. Make a third call: ‘How did the cattle grade?’ knowing they are going to do well because of what you’ve done to make them that way. And also say ‘By the way, they are selling again this year at such and such a place and on such and such a day.

To raise cattle for a value-based market, producers must employ the right genetics. Genetics play a huge role in carcass quality because they’re 40 percent heritable. Not everyone considers the heritability of traits when they make purchase decisions though. That’s also why cattle buyers are leery about buying strings of cattle if they haven’t had them before. More than likely, most will grade well or most will grade poor because of the high heritability of carcass traits.

Breed Composition We all know heterosis occurs. If you have a combination of breeds, you know what kind of blend is needed by asking yourself how you want to market them. When we select the best critters within breeds, that’s when we really can make some improvements. It is also important to stay away from extremes, because you don’t want the commodity feeder not to want your cattle. You have a real problem when your cattle don’t fit the commodity market. Retained ownership is the best way to capture all the value, but you also capture all the risk.

Terminology

EPD: Expected Progeny Difference - The expected differences in performance of a sire’s progeny when compared to the average progeny of all sires evaluated within the breed. Based on actual performance, progeny performance and relatives’ performance. ACC: Accuracy - The reliability placed on the EPD. BW: Birth Weight - The birth weight of a bull’s progeny when compared to the breed average, in pounds. CE, CED: Calving Ease Direct - The difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. The average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. CETM, CEM, MCE: Calving Ease Total Maternal, Calving Ease Maternal, Maternal Calving Ease - The difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. The average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. CW: Carcass Weight (Simmental, Charolais) - The adjusted carcass weights of a sire’s progeny, expressed in pounds. FAT, BF: Back Fat - The adjusted twelfth rib fat thickness of a sire’s progeny, expressed in inches. HPG: Heifer Pregnancy (Red Angus) - Differences in percent probability of female progeny conceiving to calve as 2-year-olds; a more accurate measurement than her sire’s or paternal brothers’ scrotal circumference. I: Interim - The EPD is based on performance information of a bull’s sire, dam, and relatives. %IMF: Intramuscular Fat (Angus, Hereford) - A predictor of the difference in a sire’s progeny for percent intramuscular fat in the ribeye muscle compared to other sires. ME: Maintenance Energy (Red Angus) - Differences in mature cow maintenance energy requirements. Expressed as megacalories per month. MB, MARB: Marbling (Red Angus, Simmental, Charolais) - The adjusted marbling score of a sire’s progeny, expressed in percent. MH: Mature Height (Angus) - A predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires, expressed in inches. MkH: Milking Herds (Angus) - Indicates the number of herds from which daughters are reported. MkD: Milking Daughters (Angus) - Reflects the number of daughters having progeny weaning weight records included in the analysis. MW: Mature Weight (Angus) - A predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires, expressed in pounds. M&G: Maternal Milk & Growth (Hereford) - The Milk EPD plus 1/2 the WW EPD. A sire’s M&G EPD reflects what he is expected to transmit to his daughters for a combination of growth genetics and maternal production. Milk, MM - The amount of pre-weaning performance gained by calves which can be attributed to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters, expressed in pounds of calf. P: Pedigree estimate.

REA, RE: Rib Eye Area - Adjusted ribeye area of a sire’s progeny, measured in square inches. SCR, SC: Scrotal Circumference (Angus, Simmental, Charolais, Hereford) - Adjusted yearling scrotal circumferences of a bull’s progeny when compared to breed average, in centimeters. SHR: Shear Force (Simmental) - Pounds of force required to shear a steak. STAY: Stayability (Red Angus, Simmental) - Differences in percent probability of daughters staying productive past the age of six. TM, MWW: Total Maternal, Maternal Weaning Weight (Red Angus, Simmental, Charolais) - Each of these terms measures a sire’s ability to transmit milk production and growth rate through his daughters. Predicts the weaning weight of a sire’s daughters’ calves. Equal to his milk EPD plus 1/2 his WW EPD. WW: Weaning Weight - Adjusted weaning weights of a bull’s progeny when compared to the breed average, in pounds. YG: Yield Grade (Simmental) - Expressed as a deviation of Yield Grade units where negative values are desirable. YW: Yearling Weight - The adjusted yearling weights of a bull’s progeny when compared to breed average, in pounds.

Indexes

$F: Feedlot Value (Angus) - Calculates a $/head difference in expected progeny performance for post weaning merit. $F uses WW and YW EPDs along with trait inter-relationships. Typical feedlot gain value, feed consumption and cost differences are accounted for in the final calculations. $G: Grid Value (Angus) - Combines quality grade and yield grade attributes, and is calculated for animals with carcass EPDs, ultrasound EPDs, or both types of EPDs. A three-year rolling average is used to establish typical industry economic values for quality grade and yield grade schedules. $B: Beef Value (Angus) - The expected average dollar per head difference in the progeny post weaning performance and carcass value. The $B value is comprised of two pieces: $F and $G. $W: Weaned Calf Value (Angus) - The expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit, expressed in $/head. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size. $EN: Cow Energy Value (Angus) - Assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires, expressed in dollar savings/cow/year. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals. $EN savings include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. API: All-Purpose Index (Simmental) - Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with daughters retained and remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. TI: Terminal Index (Simmental) - Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. BMI$: Baldy Maternal Index (Hereford) - An index to maximize profit for commercial cow-calf producers who use Hereford bulls in rotational crossbreeding programs on Angus-based cows and heifers. Retained ownership of calves is assumed, with fed cattle marketed on a Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) LLC pricing grid.

BII$: Brahman Influence Index (Hereford) - This index is similar to BMI$, with one difference - Hereford bulls are used in rotational crossing with Brahman, rather than Angus. Places greater emphasis on traits deficient in Brahman-cross cattle, (fertility and age at puberty) and less on more acceptable traits (growth and calving ease) CHB$: Certified Hereford Beef Index (Hereford) - A terminal sire index, where Hereford bulls are mated to British-cross cows and all offspring are sold as fed cattle on a CHB LLC pricing grid. CEZ$: Calving EZ Index (Hereford) - This index is similar to BMI$, except Hereford bulls are mated only to yearling heifers. Increased emphasis on CE and MCE compared with the other indexes.

Sire Information

Heterozygous Polled - Polled bulls that carry one horned gene. May sire calves with horns when mated to cows carrying the horned gene. Homozygous Polled - Bulls with a 99.9 percent probability of being homozygous polled, having been DNA tested or test-mated to horned and heterozygous polled cows. Expect these bulls to sire all polled calves. Double Polled - Young, unproven sires whose parents are both polled. Heterozygous Black - Black bulls that carry one red gene. Expect 50 percent black calves when the bull is mated to non-diluted red cows.

The table of adjustment factors to be used to estimate across-breed expected progeny differences (AB-EPDs) for sixteen breeds was presented at the Beef Improvement Federation Annual Meeting in Fort Collins, Colorado on June 7, 2007. Bulls of different breeds can be compared on the same EPD scale by adding the appropriate adjustment factor to the expected progeny differences (EPDs) produced in the most recent genetic evaluations for each of the sixteen breeds. Most breed associations publish EPDs on an annual basis. These EPDs predict differences expected in performance of future progeny of two or more bulls within the same breed for birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, and maternal milking ability (as reflected in progeny weaning weights). Normally, the EPDs of bulls from different breeds cannot be compared because most breed associations compute their EPDs in separate analyses and each breed has a different base point (where the average EPD = 0). The across-breed adjustment factors allow producers to compare the EPDs for animals from different breeds for these traits; these factors reflect both the current breed difference (for animals born in 2005) and differences in the breed base point. The adjustment factors in the table were updated using EPDs from the most recent national cattle evaluations conducted by each of the sixteen breed associations. The breed differences used to calculate the factors are based on comparisons of progeny of sires from each of these breeds at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) in Clay Center, Nebraska.

Homozygous Black - Bulls with a 99.9 percent probability of producing all black calves when mated to non-diluted red and black cows. Dilution Gene - Cattle carrying the dilution gene will be gray, red or yellow. Non-dilutor cattle will appear black or darker red.

Bovigen GeneSTAR

Definitions

GeneSTAR® Quality Grade is a DNA genetic

marker panel test, which identifies the presence of four major genes associated with Quality Grade and marbling. Each of the four gene markers in this panel have been found to be highly associated with quality grade in multiple evaluations across multiple breeds of cattle. Moreover, this panel of markers is the only marbling or quality grade test to have passed an independent validation by the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium (NBCEC).

GeneSTAR® Tenderness identifies

animals that are more likely to produce tender cuts of beef. GeneSTAR Tenderness is a DNA marker test for two important genes, Calpastatin & Calpain, involved in the postmortem tenderization process of beef. Calpain is a naturally occurring enzyme that weakens muscle fibers during the post mortem aging process and plays a major role in the overall tenderness equation. Calpastatin is a naturally occurring enzyme that inhibits the normal tenderization process of meat during post mortem aging by acting as an antagonist to the effect of Calpain. Animals carrying the favorable forms of the genes have been found to significantly reduce the proportion of “tough” eating experiences. The impact of these two genes on tenderness has been well documented for quite some time. However, through the use of DNA tests first available from Bovigen, there is now an effective and efficient tool available to use this knowledge in making breeding and management decisions.

On average, the T1 marker for Calpastatin accounts for about one pound of shear force and is completely independent of the other two markers currently making up the GeneSTAR® Tenderness test. T2 and T3, both markers in the Calpain gene, also account for about one pound each, though they are not independent of each other. As a result they account for about one and a half pounds in total. So, on average, the entire Tenderness test accounts for about two and a half pounds of WBSF.

GeneSTAR® Feed Efficiency consists of four markers

which together identify as much as a 15% difference in daily feed consumption with no affect on other traits like average daily gain, carcass weight, quality grade or yield grade. Producers can use the GeneSTAR Feed Efficiency test to identify up to a $50 difference in feed cost between animals when ration costs are at $165/ton. This panel is based on discovery and validation work on thousands of cattle utilizing the trait of Net Feed Intake (NFI). NFI is the difference between an animal’s actual feed intake and the amount of feed an animal is expected to eat based on its size, composition and growth rate.

Genetic Progeny Differences™

Since the first DNA test for the beef industry was released, the industry has struggled with an accurate way to communicate the effects of markers for a given trait. The answer to that dilemma is the Genetic Progeny Difference™ (GPD™). GPDs are used to describe the actual genetic makeup of animals and the true effect of each allele, or combination of alleles within a trait. GPDs are designed to accommodate an infinite number of genetic combinations, interactions and genes yet to be discovered. Because every marker can affect its related trait differently, each allele (0, 1 or 2 Stars) is assigned a numerical value based on the proven difference of its affect on the trait. The numerical value for GeneSTAR Tenderness, for example, is reported in pounds of shear force and is derived from independent third party validation results, including the NBCEC. An animal with one STAR for T1, one STAR for T2 and two STARs for T3 shows a difference in shear force of -1.5 pounds, as compared to an animal with no markers for Tenderness. Thus, the Tenderness GPD would be -1.5. For Quality Grade markers, a GPD is reported as the increased likelihood that a carcass will grade Choice or better, and is also derived from independent third party validation results including the NBCEC. An animal with two STARs for QG1 and one STAR for QG2 would be 20% more likely to have a Choice or better Quality Grade over an animal with no Quality Grade markers. For this animal the Quality Grade GPD would be +20.0.

The EPDs or genetic rankings are more sophisticated and combined into indexes allowing for efficient selection for multiple traits. New research efforts will incorporate the individual gene marker information into genetic rankings. And finally after 30+ years of saying “it’s just around the corner,” sexed semen is now available in beef! The first Genex beef bulls have been sorted and GenChoiceTM sexed semen is available. For more information on GenChoice availability contact your Genex representative. The other area of “science” receiving high interest is feed efficiency. Genex is cooperating with one of the largest research projects in the country. The article on page 41 discusses the feed efficiency research at the University of Illinois. In addition, Bovigen has announced the release of several gene markers for efficiency. These markers have been validated and are displayed on the individual bull pages throughout the Beef Genetic Management Guide.
