The Maspalomas Gay Pride March this year was attended by an estimated 10,000 people and once again is supposed to have broken the world record for the largest number of drag queens on a roundabout. The parade was lead by a stretch limo with the winner of this year’s drag competition riding on top, followd by members of the the
Gran Canaria Deaf and Gay association and The Canary News funcar driven by the Editor with a glamorous showgirl riding up front. This is the 10th year of pride and now one of the main highlights of the Maspalomas carnival as up to 50,000 people are thought to come to the island just to celebrate life, love and freedom to be who you are.
The main acts on the Saturday night included eighties group Tight Fit (of The Lion Sleeps Tonight fame), the amazing voice of Ruth Lorenzo, Dunia the irrepresable liverpudlian bombshell Sonia and one of the freshest and most entertaining performers of the night was New Yorker Cazwell. Expect to see a lot more of him over the coming year.

Thief Arrested in Arguineguin

Detainee took advantage just before the close of business to attack a clerk and made off with the proceeds of the day
The National Police have announced the launch of an English language Twitter Channel @ SpanishPolice, through which they can inform immediate and concise accounts of operations being carried out, providing tips, pictures and content about their public service.
A 21 year old has been arrested by agents of the Guardia Civil in Arguineguin and alleged perpetrator of several counts of robbery with violence in at least four supermarkets in the archipelago, including one in the town of Puerto Rico and another in the Arinaga Crossing, in the municipality of Agüimes. The investigation began after the authorities detected several robberies with the same modus operandi, a statement said. A man identified as ‘CII’, a Romanian national, is now under arrest accused of having entered the premises shortly before the end of day, initially, to make a small purchase of no more than five Euros. To pay he used a high denomination note and so the clerk was forced to open the safe or change box.
He used this method in up to four supermarkets in Puerto Rico, the Arinaga Crossing and two in the south of Tenerife. At the time of his arrest, in the south of Gran Canaria, CII was using the identification and actual documents of a British citizen, he even had his driving license. He held some resemblance to the photograph that appeared in the document so used it to travel between Gran Canaria and Tenerife and thus go unnoticed. The arrested man was sent for detention by a judge of the courts of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
At that moment, the accused is said to have taken advantage and pushed the shop assistants violently, and grabbed a large sum of money-up to a total of €3,000 taking advantage of it being the close of business for the day. Furthermore, he is said to have used a cap to cover his face from security cameras in the shops.
This new channel has come due to the interest generated in its profile in Castilian - @policia – from other police forces around the world. The Spanish police twitter account now has more than 16,000 followers achieved in its two years of operation, the Ministry of Interior announced. The department boasted in a press release that the FBI is already one of the followers of @SpanishPolice, along with Vancouver police and other agencies as unique as the Oklahoma Sheriff’s Office. Spanish police received numerous messages and public mentions on Twitter, from cards, greetings and support for their work in the area of Internet communications, to questions of a police nature and requests for information on Spanish laws or procedures related to the institution.
Furthermore, it has become a channel through which citizens report crimes if they have detected anything from child pornography or are victims of Internet fraud, to “international crime and terrorism”. Information, says the Ministry of The Interior is automatically transferred to the specialized unit responsible for each area. The advantages of this service is its immediacy, ease of use, brevity, conciseness and capacity for distribution of information useful to any audience interested in the subject, and allows the user convenient and quick access sources that he himself selected. In the two years since the first channel was launched the police have released 950 tweets being followed by government institutions and other law enforcement or media professionals. This channel also allows feedback to keep the thousands of concerned citizens in the loop. The National Police also has profiles and content relevant to citizens in other social networks widely used by the virtual community, like Facebook and Flickr.

The front pages of major dalies in the UK last weekend included the gruesome murder of a British woman in the south of Tenerife who died having been beheaded in a Chinese supermarket in Los Cristianos on Friday. The most widely read newspaper in the UK, tabloid The Sun which sells more than 2.8million copies, highlighted the story on its front page with the headline “Beheaded”. Followed with “Machete horror on hol isle” The newspaper said on its website that the only person arrested for these acts, 28
year old Bulgarian Deyan Valentinov D., is insane and that he referred to religious reasons as the cause of the murder. He is reported to have said “I’m the prophet of God and this is my treasure”. The Daily Mirror also ran the story with the headline “Maniac cuts off brit woman’s head” as did most of the mainstream media in the UK including The Daily Telegraph and Scotland’s The Herald who ran it on the front page. The victim was named as 60 year old Jennifer Mills-Westley who was believed to have been chosen at random by the crazed killer, and had reportedly been turned away by a security guard not long

A man was seriously injured last Sunday night after suffering a spectacular crash on the GC-1 just outside of Arguineguin trabelling in the direction of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
At first it was feared the biker had lost his life, due to the severity of the accident, but, once the emergency medical services reached him he was then treated and then transferred to a hospital, where it was found that although his wounds were serious, they were unlikely to be life threatening.

A worker was in critical condition after receiving an electric shock while working on a building near a shopping centre in Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria. The 39-year-old man, suffered a cardiac arrest from which he was resuscitated by health services. The incident took place around 11.45 am on Friday. The injured
man was transferred to a health centre in Arguineguín. He was attended to at the scene by Local Police, Guardia Civil and Canario Emergency Services (SUC), a doctor and a nurse examined him further at the health centre. The wounded man was expected to be transferred to Hospital Insular de Gran Canaria.
The killer - a 28-year-old Bulgarian with a history of mental illness - reportedly picked up a large knife or machete from a shelf in the store. He then stabbed her repeatedly without saying a word before hacking off her head. He then ran out into the street covered in blood, carrying the head and telling passers-by: “This is my treasure. A large crowd gathered and had to be held back by security officers and police as they tried to lynch the killer. Hurray For Brits Abroad
As the ACCM (ASOCIACIÓN CANARIA DE CÁNCER DE MAMA) breast cancer appeal draws to a close, let us look back on the astounding support primarily given by the British Community in Gran Canaria. The campaign was started by GLAY as part of the lead up to Gay Pride 2011 and as a partial departure from their usual fund raising focus. Breast Cancer Awareness was chosen as it not only affects both men and women, but also is something that can affect anyone regardless of their sexuality.
Meanwhile in Puerto Rico an unlikely cabaret burlesque troupe had formed with a view to raising some money for a cancer charity, on the basis that local entertainer and co-owner of ‘The Pub’ in Puerto Rico, Kimberley Higgins had undergone treatment herself over the 2 years preceding and she and her friends wanted to show their gratitude for the help she had received.
Along with other main sponsor, Clinica Roca, The Canary News agreed to become media partner for the campaign, providing coverage to the English Speaking community. The campaign was launched at the Yumbo’s Fuze Bar on The 100th International Women’s Day, March 8th 2011 with the aim of collecting bra’s and bikini tops to use as decoration for the 10th Pride as a sign of solidarity and as much money as possible. The target was to raise up to €5000.
The first event, put together by Kimberley and local celebrity hair stylist Graham, of Rejuvena, raised over €1000 despite them having yet to identify exactly who the money should go to. It was then they discovered The Canary News was involved in the campaign to raise funds and awareness for the Las Palmas based charity which provides support for victims of Breast Cancer and Gynaecological Cancer, ACCM. They offered the money they had raised and decided that they could probably do more. Several other venues offered a space for further shows and so, with their steadfast support, a series of burlesque events were performed in front of delighted audiences in many of the pubs

Jacky Donovan of GLAY too received an award that evening for having initiated the campaign, and their having beat the initial target with events such as the sponsored parachute jump (50% of the proceeds to go to ACCM and the other 50% to HIV charity ACES, Amigos Contra El Sida), The Pink Pool Party sponsored by KISS Canaries English language radio station which raised over €700, various events around the Yumbo center, with more than €2,000 being given by Ricky’s and Sparkles cabaret bars through parachute jump sponsorship and collections of bras and money and the very British Windmill Pub in El Chapperal, Playa del Inglés, themselves raised more than €500 in one night with an event hosted by soul singer Stacey Mae.

Raffles were arranged, tins rattled, and much to the amusement of many of the regulars the ‘burlesque boys’ performed a ‘full monty’ at the end of the evening. As word spread about the show, so a small tour developed with highly successful events at The Highlander, The Harp, Mary D’s and Fusion in Arguineguin each wanting to play their part in this very worthwhile cause, as the fund swelled so the legend of The Friends of Puerto Rico began to take shape.
On the final evening of Maspalomas Gay Pride 2011, GLAY announced a running campaign total from each of these different sources of over €13,000 with money still being collected and one final event still planned. This was broadcast live, courtesy of KISS Canaries FM, who during the 10 days of Pride managed to draw in a worldwide audience of over 250,000 listeners – fantastic public relations for Gran Canaria as a whole!
When the founder of ACCM, Marisa, discovered the amazing work being done in the charity’s name she was overwhelmed by the generosity of the people of Puerto Rico and offered us an award which was accepted at a very glamorous gala event in Las Palmas by Kim and Graham and the founder of The Canary News, Genna D’Cruz.
As we go to print, the grand finale organised at Sioux City by The Canary News and broadcast live by KISS Canaries FM, will already have taken place – an event which will take pride of place in our next edition. A final total of monies raised for the campaign, a complete list of the venues who played their part, and not forgetting the generous donations for the auction will be printed in Edition 48. Sterling Struggles At the moment inflation’s the name and rates are the game. Inflation is on the rise around the world but central banks are far from united about what to do about it. In Brazil prices are going up by 6.3% a year so the central bank has cranked its policy interest rate up to 11.75%. The European Central Bank has started to tighten policy in response to 2.7% inflation. Its Refinancing Rate is expected to be at least 1.75% by December and higher next year but is currently on hold in an attempt to assist Portugal, Ireland and Greece. The Federal Reserve is leaving its 0.125% Federal Funds Rate unchanged, despite an identical 2.7% rate of inflation. Nor is the Bank of England inclined to shift its 0.5% Bank Rate even though inflation is about twice as high as it should be, although Mervyn King has recently said low interest rates cannot be around for ever. The effect of this action - or inaction - on currencies is significant. The Euro is in demand because investors expect to receive higher rates yields in the future. Meanwhile, the pound had been struggling. Investors cannot ignore the fact that they would lose money on sterling deposits because the rate of interest paid is less than the value eroded by inflation, keep watching for the rate increase!!.
It is for that reason that sterling is suffering against the Euro. The Euro’s promising interest rate outlook kept it out of what could have been a major scrape. Not only is Portugal beginning its bankruptcy hearing, Greece looks increasingly likely to suffer the same default (they call it rescheduling) that precipitated the initial rescue last year. The word on the street is that Spain’s problems are different from those of Portugal, Ireland and Greece and thankfully recent GDP figures to come out of Spain were encouraging. Just what the Eurozone wants to hear. Certainly Euro interest rates will go up at some stage and there have been reminders on that score recently from two Euroland central bankers. Austria’s Ewald Novotny said the market’s expectation of a further 50 basis points’ increase in the refinancing rate by the end of the year is “well founded”. Luc Coene of Belgium said “conditions are too accommodative”. A slightly higher than expected inflation figure for the euro zone in March also helped. The finalised number was 2.7%, not the 2.6% that investors had been looking for. If the European Central Bank was inclined to raise rates when inflation stood at 2.4% it will be no less keen to do so now.
With the Euro hovering around the €1.145 level expats looking to transfer currency will need to think carefully about their next move. Often the perception at these levels is that the only way is up, however with the amount of uncertainty present in the market it is more important than ever to talk to a currency expert to see when is actually the best time to trade. Letter of the week Just had to tell you this story that happened to us on a night out in Puerto Rico. We visited a bar down by the beach (whose name begins with H and ends in ii) for a drink and we had intended to eat in their adjoining restaurant. A very polite young waitress sat us down and we ordered some drinks. There were drinks menus on the table and under them there were ashtrays. So we enquired as to why the allowed smoking. Now I know they have open doors down there but it was windy and they had closed quite a few so we were pretty well in doors. There were families there also and in the restaurant we noticed there were more ashtrays. We had assumed that all public places now, especially where children are allowed and also where food is being served were deemed non-smoking. The young lady answered our question saying, and I quote, “Oh our boss is friends with the police and they turn a blind eye, after all its a very narrow line between where you can and cannot smoke.” Unbelievable. We were lost for words, and then to add more fuel to the fire a guy next to us lit up a cigar. We paid, up and left. I know people have a right to smoke but what is the law there for if some just choose to ignore it for the sake of their business. Governments have introduced these laws to enable our children and their children to be brought up in a smoke free environment and hopefully eradicate a lot of illness and disease associated with smoking, but not if you live here as it seems the polise are not enforcing this law in Puerto Rico.

I said that it wasn’t changed by me. After giving him my passport no. NIE. Address and other information he eventually confirmed that I had purchased the phone and told me that a Romanian had cloned my SIM card which is something that should be impossible. I told him that as the phone never leaves the house I would think it was impossible too. After about an hour on the phone I was eventually told that my PAYT service would be reinstated and recredited but it would take about 7-10 days because of the paperwork. He also told me he had opened a case file and gave me the reference number. As I haven’t heard anything for a couple of weeks I phoned them this morning. I am fuming. The latest is that the number has been cancelled because the bill hasn’t been paid, and until the owner of the contract contacts them they can do nothing. No amount of explaining that I am the original owner and the other guy they have on file is a fraud and a thief got me anywhere. I phoned the police but they say it is a matter for Movistar or I could contact the Consumer Office, but I would need to speak Spanish. Sadly my Spanish is not yet that good. I know it is only a PAYT phone and I know it is only 13 euros but it is the principle of the thing. Why should somebody get away with something like this? It is stealing and fraud and should be subject to criminal proceedings. Perhaps you could add my details to your other cases and then perhaps something can be done.

Thank you for your letter. We know that there are many people who do not agree with the smoking ban, but I believe there are many more, far less vocal, who do. What’s more if people can’t stick to simple rules in society which unequivocally improve everyone’s health then there is little hope. I think the time of the Spanish police ‘turning a blind eye’ is also coming to an end. The modern Spanish authorities are much more accountable these days and as public servants most I have had contact with take their role of responsibility very seriously. As for the abr, I just think they should grow up and get over the fact that 21st century canary islanders would like to live more healthy lives. I’d love to hear how many of our readers agree or disagree with the smoking ban. Is it a problem? Is it better this way? What do you think?

Dear Editor Having read the articles in issues 44 and 45 I would like to inform you of my problem with Movistar. In addition my contract mobile I have a Pay As You Talk mobile left over from when we first moved here. I only keep it for emergencies but there’s 13 euros left on it valid up to July 2011. I always keep it charged and think the last time I used it was January. I tried to use it the beginning of April because the battery had died on my contract one but got a message saying that service wasn’t available. It also wasn’t able to receive calls. I went to my local Movistar shop only to be told that the number had been switched from PAYT to a contract and then subsequently suspended because of non payment of bill. What! – I hadn’t changed it to a contract. I can’t because whenever Movistar phone they always speak Spanish and I am not that good to

Help is not hard to find nor very expensive, but it is cheaper if you try to learn Spanish. My family booked 2 apartments on an ‘all inclusive’ deal, when they arrived they were put into Nido though they’d paid for an upgrade to Lara because of the better access for a wheelchair.The all inclusive deal was not really all inclusive. All it included was very little choice and the same cheap dinners night. The apartments were dirty and very run down, my sister was asking for 3 days for toilet rolls + towels when the maid came in it took her at most less than 5 minutes to clean, there were cockroaches everywhere. With our beautiful island struggling so much, these apartments are not doing our reputation any good!! Luckily my family will come again because I live here, but we were speaking to some people who won’ t come again and with places relying on word of mouth lots of people won’t bother coming somewhere they have heard of others being ripped off. People try to save money by getting a ‘cheap’ deal but then wonder why they don’t receive quality, and those who offer low quality all inclusive don’t really care about this island at all, or they would realise that all-inclusive deals do very little for the local economy. Ever bitten off more than you can chew? We all have from time to time, and usually it is just a case of either trying to go too fast or misjudging what you thought you were looking at in the first place. We can always make a choice to change our methods or avoid the problem all together, but the achievement of actually conquering that mountain can often be more life affirming than anything else in this world. As the old saying goes, there is only one way to eat an elephant: small pieces. When Marisa Herrera decided to start the breast cancer support group ACCM, she did so because she realised, having suffered from the disease herself, that there are a multitude of people in the Canaries, and beyond, who are diagnosed with chronic illnesses like cancer but then have real trouble trying to figure out how to approach the next step. How do you keep from giving up and just allowing yourself to wither away, to shrink from the obstacles in your path when that obstacle now seems to overshadow everything else you’ve ever known.The decision has not just got to be to fight the incurable and hope to survive, you must decide that you really, really want to live. Want to live so very much that you will do what ever it takes to take the very best from your life, regardless of how rocky or long or short the road ahead may be, or how much of a struggle it is all likely to become. It is not just about forgetting the pain that might be involved and deciding that you will not give up no matter what; it is about embracing the pain and making it part of you, part of your struggle, part of your achievement and part of your future, because the future is more precious than the simple personal comforts of the here and now. To go through this type of learning process is an achievement in itself, but to then go on and begin to assemble teams of people who can help others to learn, who can show others that there is life beyond diagnosis, people who can allow grandchildren to grow up with the benefit of knowing their grandparents, daughters to continue to know their mothers, show husbands new ways to love their wives and inspire great feats of endurance from complete strangers is a most noble and phenomenal of engagements. What she gives and has given is too precious to describe, and what she recieves must be our long lasting gratitude and the courage to be inspired to be a little more courageous about making a future.The elephant in the room, is that perhaps we all know that we could try a little harder, do a little more and care a little more deeply about those people who are around us; but not only them, for we could each be just that little bit kinder to ourselves too and give ourselves a future worth fighting for. The past 10 weeks has been a sublime pleasure. Having started from a position of being told that things could not be done, or that people would not participate, or that good could not be achieved I, and the brave people who have accompanied me, on this journey to find a few good hearts to help raise funds and awareness for Marisa’s work, am supremely proud to be associated with this island and the abundant amount of strong and willing participants in building something really beautiful for the future. I am especially grateful for the new friendships I have found along the way with ACCM, with GLAY, with Sparkles, with the friends of Puerto Rico and in particular with YOU, the community I live and work with on this little island adrift in an unknowable ocean of possibilities. I feel extraordinarily lucky to be here in what must be one of the best jobs in the world. Thank you.

Beach holidays and wheelchairs do not necessarily conjure up images of relaxation or happiness but some of you may be surprised to learn that Gran Canaria is becoming evermore progressive in this growth area of the tourism sector. With several companies on the island specialising in equipment hire and advice for the well-wheeled traveller.

the whole this was the exception and not the rule. I wanted to find out first hand and so strapped myself in to an electric scooter and zoomed around the island for a couple of days just to see how difficult it would be...
After getting used to people speaking to me a little more slowly and a little more loudly than usual, off I went fully expecting to uncover huge difficulties in negotiating the pavements and shops. I was in for a surprise. I found most people to be very accommodating and actually quite enjoyed the whole experience. I only encountered a few instances where things need to improve, such as pavements that ended with no drop-stone down to the road and so no way to cross meaning I had to go back the way I’d come, but on
Airport Gran Canaria’s Las Palmas airport has excellent facilities throughout for those with limited mobility - including lifts, ramps and disabled spaces on all levels of the car park. They have a team of very friendly mobility assistants who will help to ensure pleasant passage from aircraft to around the terminal terminal and vice versa. Of course it is advisable that you let your airline know in advance that you may require their help, and the sort of equipment you will need, however they coped well with me just turning up without warning. City The capital city Las Palmas is also very chair-friendly with all of the main shopping areas of town and the primary beach area of Las Canteras all perfectly accessible with ramps and promenades. Even the 15th Century Cathedral has a lift to allow access to the roof for some excellent views over the city, though unfortunately not right to the top of the main tower and though you may require a little assistance it is certainly possible to do.
Resorts The main southern resort areas of Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas, Meloneras, Puerto Rico and Mogán boast a good selection of hotels with mobility-adapted rooms which are wheelchair friendly. Several have wheel-in showers and pool hoists. There has also been much recent investment, at both national and municipal level, in extensively developing the promenades along the coast in the south, which is now almost entirely accessible for wheelchair and mobility scooter users. All of the shopping centres have good ramp access to restaurants, bars and shops and the pavements are now much better suited for wheelchair users than in the past. Of course there are still many small bars and restaurants that are lacking suitable facilities and although this is changing, it is happening rather slowly. But things are constantly improving with all new developments now being designed with accessibility for all in mind. Getting Around Adapted taxis with electric wheelchair lifts are available for airport transfers and short trips in Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas and Meloneras from companies like Socomtaxi and Canary Taxi company Candido can arrange for all your travel requirements or indeed are available on either a journey-by-journey basis or can be booked on a day rate that works out quite inexpensive if travelling as a group. Other island areas now have adapted taxis too, as well as estate cars and some sevenseated vehicles where a wheelchair can be carried in the boot. Disabled travellers are also advised to give Sol Mobility a try. Providing vehicles for rental such as electric wheelchairs, shower chairs and specialist beach-chairs with great
Surprisingly it was rather difficult to find information about travelling on public transport in Gran Canaria, the only train service is still in development and not expected before 2014 and the island bus company Global do not seem to provide any information that I could find. The first time I tried to use one of the buses the despicably ignorant driver didn’t seem to want to help me and so I was left sweating and heaving my chair up the back steps on to the bus until aided by a friendly passenger, who also helped me off again. However I was delighted to learn that in fact most of the modern bus services are perfectly well equipped for chair and scooter. As I learned later from a scooter veteran however you have to be very firm with some of the drivers, who can be rather reluctant to help. There are specialist hydraulic lifts on most of the buses these days, and if requested to do so the drivers are obliged to put on their gloves and operate the lift to let you on and off the bus. As I soon discovered however most of the bus drivers are really very friendly and have no qualms whatsoever being of assistance if they can.

Norwegian Day in Gran Canaria by Nina Blaafjel
May 17th should be regarded as an expression of thankfulness, on behalf of the old values of freedom, equality and brotherhood, the ideological basis for the constitution, and the circumstances that led to the constitution’s creation. Among Norwegians, the day is referred to simply as syttende mai or syttande mai (both meaning May Seventeenth), Nasjonaldagen (The National Day) or Grunnlovsdagen (The Constitution Day), although the latter is less frequent. Children’s parades A noteworthy aspect of the Norwegian Constitution Day is its very non-military nature. All over Norway, children’s parades with an abundance of flags form the central elements of the celebration. Each elementary school district arranges its own parade with marching bands between schools. The parade takes the children through the community, often making stops at homes of senior citizens, war memorials, etc. The longest parade is in Oslo, where some 100,000 people travel to the city centre to participate in the main festivities. This is broadcast on TV every year, with comments on costumes, banners etc., together with local reports from celebrations around the country. The massive Oslo parade includes some 100 schools, marching bands, and passes the royal palace where the royal family greet the people from the main balcony. Typically a school’s children parade will consist of some senior school children carrying the school’s official banner, followed by a handful of other older children carrying full size Norwegian flags, and the school’s marching band. Traditionally during the parade a marching band will play and the children will sing lyrics about the celebration of the National Day. The parade concludes with the stationary singing of the national anthem “Ja, vi elsker dette landet” (typically verses 1, 7 and 8), and the royal anthem “Kongesangen”. In addition to flags, people typically wear red, white and blue ribbons. Although a long-standing tradition, it has lately become more popular for men, women, and

The day is celebrated in Norway and by Norwegians living abroad. In Gran Canaria the celebrations centre around the Norwegian school in Arguineguin who organise the day’s events. The day starts with the raising of the flag and the national anthem at the school before the parade starts. The parade set off from outside the Norwegian school at 10am and made it’s way across the roundabout and along the water towards the main square at Anfi del Mar. The Polcia Local assisted, stopping the traffic to allow the parade to pass. In addition to the school children and parents, other resident and visiting Norwegians took part. Once at Anfi del Mar both the Canarian and the Norwegian national anthems were played as well as some other traditional songs. A speech was given by some of the students at the school. This year a well known Norwegian singer, Tor Endresen also took part in the celebrations. He has a long career as a singer and song writer of popular music in Norway. Following some more music everyone made their way back up to the Norwegian school for food and drink and entertainment provided by the students. There was cake, hotdogs and drinks and games for the children before the entertainment started, including songs, dance and music. The day finished with announcing the prizes in the raffle all donated by local businesses.

Green Canaria, Year of the Forest The original laurel Forests of Gran Canaria have almost completely gone due to centuries of abuse and overgrazing, though a recent reforestation program has helped to bring back at least some of what was there before. The Canaries has more protected national park than any other part of Spain yet sadly species like the Red Kite and Egyptian Vulture have all but disappeared from these islands.
There are many types of habitat here, and many of you will have heard Gran Canaria referred to as a miniature continent due to having a unique blend of almost every type of landscape. There is semi-desert – which contain drought tolerant plants such as the Canary Spurge and the emblematic Canary Cactus Spurge. There are Pine forests - the Canary Pine can reach up to 60 meters in height and lives for hundreds of years, you’ll also find the Canary Rock Rose and various Brooms among the pines.
Though not yet lost Laurisilva (Laurel Forest) is in severe danger of disappearing - Only a small fragment of what was once here remains on Gran Canaria, characterised by Laurel and other glossyleaved trees like the Canary Holly and Wild Olive.

The World Environment Day (WED) theme this year ‘Forests: Nature at Your Service’ aims to encourage forest conservation and sustainable consumption for green growth, in support of the UN International Year of Forests initiative. Preserving forests throughout the world has to be in our collective consciousness so as to change our lifestyles and help save our planet’s precious resources, habitats and species. Public transport services generally run to a reduced schedule, although there may be no services in rural areas. A wide range cultural activities and celebrations are usually arranged for the El Día de Islas Canarias every year. Schools have special classes about Canary Islands’ history and parties are organized for their students in the days and weeks leading up to the celebration. Many people hold private parties at home or in restaurants on the evening of May 29. Celebrations of one sort or another are held in pretty much every community during the day and on into the evening. This should be an excellent time of year to get up the mountain and away from the normal tourist areas to experience some of the real culture and history of the islands. Places like Teror in the north and Agüimes in the east will certainly have some of the most visual and elaborate demonstrations. Many of the larger towns will have little fiestas with food tasting and traditional music. There will be lovely displays in towns from Mogan
The Day of the Canary Islands is not a public holiday in the rest of Spain it is just for us here and one of the few times of the year when full Canarian culture and colour are on full show. There will be special church services open to all and giving thanks for another year of peace and island bounty and traditional sporting events such as Loucha Canaria, the traditional Canarian wrestling which is rather like Sumo, and there may also be palo canario traditional stick fighting martial art. You will find cattle pulling sleighs in some towns and domestic animal shows and lots of concerts with traditional music and dancing as well as exhibitions of arts and crafts by the people of the Canaries as well as lots and lots of blue and yellow flag waving.

Voting in the Canary Islands I am no expert on constitutional affairs, but I have watched the shenanigans in the UK with increasing incredulity. I think I have missed a chapter somewhere, but I cannot see why AV was recommended to voters, when it seems to be widely recognised as a flawed system, now clearly seen by voters as worse than the current ‘first past the post’ system. This brings me to the forthcoming local elections in Spain and the Canary Islands. Sadly, there is no Nick Clegg to wind up here, just an ordinary system of proportional representation, which seems to work rather well. I have made up my mind to vote either for the male candidate who does not wear a tie, or for the woman with the most genuine smile and less lip-gloss. After all, it is just so silly wearing a tie on a poster when no one here, other than a few bankers and undertakers, bother to wear one in real life. Another factor for me to consider is that I shall immediately disqualify any candidate who hires one of those noisy loudspeaker vans that drives past our house so fast with their distorted loudspeaker systems that I cannot understand a word that they are saying. Bella hates it and barks and cries loudly, whilst Mackitten meows pure vengeance. Those speaker vans disturb the usual tranquillity of our neighbourhood and have a lot to answer for. I am sometimes asked about the voting system in Spain so I thought it would be useful to offer a ‘Twitter’ about it.

Voting here is by proportional representation, with each party publishing a list of candidates equal to the number of councillor seats available in the municipality. Councillors are elected in proportion to the total votes that they have won. If, for instance, a municipality has 17 councillors to be elected, a party that wins 65% of the total votes will have 9 councillors and be able to govern without forming a coalition because they have won a majority. If no party wins a majority, minority parties can form a coalition government grouping that may even exclude the ‘winning party’. It is therefore important under PR that everyone who believes in the policies of a particular
So how do we vote? On Election Day, you need to take your identification with a photo (a passport usually puts paid to any arguments about ID cards and driving licences!) and the voting paper for the party that you wish to vote for in the envelope to the polling station. Remember too that you are voting for a party and not a person, unlike in the UK. Most political parties will already have sent voters their own voting papers and an envelope before polling day. You need to ensure that you have placed the correct voting paper in the envelope and take it to the polling station. Don’t be tempted to write on the voting paper, even an ‘X’ will be disqualified, as will any rude comments! Even if you don’t have a voting paper before polling day, you can still go to the polling station, go to the polling booth, and select one paper for the party that you fancy, place it in the envelope and seal it. You then go to the desk, show your passport and hand the envelope to the clerk at the desk who will put it in the box. That’s it; democracy has been seen to be done! Stem-changing verbs There are four main ways that a verb or action word can ‘misbehave’ in the present tense. Apart from the totally irregular verbs IR (to go) and SER (to be), most change their stem (the bit before the last two letters) in a way that fits into one of the following categories: 1) ONLY IRREGULAR WITH ‘YO’ (I) ESTAR (to be) yo estoy (I am); DAR (to give); yo doy; SABER (to know) yo sé; SALIR (to go out) yo salgo, HACER (to do/to make), yo hago; PONER (to put); yo pongo; TRAER (to bring) yo traigo and VER (to see/watch) yo veo. In this category we also have verbs that change simply to keep the right sound. For example: CONDUCIR (to drive): yo conduzco [con-DOOZ-koh]; MERECER (to deserve): yo merezco; OFRECER (to offer): yo ofrezco, TRADUCIR (to translate): yo traduzco. 2) ‘E’ changes to ‘IE’ TEN/ER (to have) él tien/e (he has); VEN/IR (to come) ella vien/e (she comes); QUERER (to love/ want); ellos quier/en (they want); ENCENDER (to turn on) enciend/o la

In ‘we’ conjugations there´s never a stem change – the misbehaving verb goes back to normal. For example with QUERER: queremos un refresco (we want a soft drink); or PODER: ¿podemos entrar? (can we come in?); ENTENDER: entendemos todo (we understand everything); TENER: no tenemos tiempo (we don´t have time) and CERRAR: cerramos a medianoche (we close at midnight).

If you want to learn a new verb that´s
irregular in one of these ways you can either make a note in brackets when you write it down (e.g. dormir: o – ue), or create a page divided into four sections, one for each type of stem-change. AVOID THROUGH VERB-COMBINING The easiest way to avoid these pesky stem changes is to use verb-combining, where the second action word is always in its original, unchanged form. So, instead of saying: salgo a las ocho (I´m going out at 8pm) you could say planeo salir a las ocho (I plan to go out at eight). Similarly, it´s easier to ask ¿Qué puedes recomendar? (what can you reccommend?) than Qué recomiendas? Or quiero pedir la cuenta (I want to ask for the bill) instead of pido la cuenta (I´m asking for the bill). Donovan, Patti Smith and Sting You wait ages for a rock legend to arrive in Las Palmas and then three come along at once.
Sting It has been confirmed that Donovan, Patti Smith and Sting will all appear in the city this month. Folk singer and guitarist, Donovan and the American punk pioneer Patti Smith will perform at the ninth edition of the Arrecife de las Músicas in the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium. They are the latest in a long line of stars who have appeared at the festival since it began in 2003. The list includes Ray Davies, Elvis Costello and John Mayall. The Arrecife de las Músicas is a cultural initiative of the Auditorium Foundation and is produced by, Las Palmas based, DD & Company Productions. It will be held this year from Friday 27 May to 11 June.

Donovan emerged as a folk musician in the mid-sixties. His compositions and lyrics earned him the nickname ‘the British Bob Dylan’, but he managed to develop his own unique style which combined pop, jazz, folk and psychedelia, and record some of the trademark songs of the era such as Catch the Wind, Mellow Yellow, and Atlantis. The latter was resurrected twenty years after it’s 1969 release as a backdrop to a violent scene in Martin Scorcese’s cinematic masterpiece Goodfellas. Having collaborated with Paul McCartney on Mellow Yellow, Donovan went on to be a big influence on some of the Beatles hits of the late sixties. His concert is in the Auditorium Symphony Hall on Friday May 27 at 21:00. Although Patti Smith has been called “The Godmother Of Punk”, her most famous song is the timeless rock anthem Because The Night. Co-written with Bruce Springsteen in 1978, the song has since been performed by Springsteen,U2 and REM and covered by many others. Patti Smitth had already risen to fame with her debut album Horses (recorded in 1975) which fused punk with poetry, but this song propelled her second album, entitled Easter, to commercial success. Other notable songs are Gloria, Dancing Barefoot and Frederick. She has also given great performances of the Rolling Stones classic, Gimme Shelter. During her eventful life Smith has demonstrated talent as an actress, artist, playwright, poet, political activist and, most recently, as a writer. Last year she won the National Book Award for her memoir Just Kids. A lot of her music has contained highly intellectual material and she has written songs about issues
such as Ho Chi Minh and the invasion of Tibet. In 2007 she was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. Now 64, unlike many of her contemporaries, Smith has not let the standard of her performances slip, as recent appearances on shows such as Jools Holland have shown. She will perform on the 11th June in the Auditorium Alfredo Kraus Symphony Hall at 21:00. The Las Palmas public will be welcoming one of the true cultural icons of the last forty years.

Whether it be as Police front man on Roxanne, Every Breath you Take, or anything else from the band’s five chart-topping albums, to Englishman in New York or Fragile released in a solo career stretching over three decades. As part of his world Symphonicites tour, the singer/songwriter will be appearing at the Stadio de Gran Canaria, the U.D Las Palmas football stadium, on the 17th July accompanied by the Orquesta
Filarmónica de Gran Canaria. The concert has been confirmed after a year of negotiations and is another major coup for the city as it heads towards it’s 2016 European City of Culture bid. During the tour, which has led to a studio album of the same name, Sting has been performing songs from his back catalogue as classical rearrangements. As well as an orchestra he is accompanied by his own four-piece band. The album track list includes Every Little Thing She Does is Magic and Roxanne and these and other familiar tunes will undoubtedly be in the live play-list. Similarly to Patti Smith, Sting’s initial work with The Police was punk inspired, but soon changed to a pop-rock sound with a reggae influence, bringing them massive mainstream success. His solo career has crossed over into a wide variety of projects incorporating jazz, world music, folk and now the classical genre. Although on the surface this may seem like another experiment, there is a sense of Sting returning to the songs he and his fans know best. So it promises to be an exciting time for music fans in Gran Canaria. Tasartico Potaje Digno De Un Rey
Potaje de Berros En medio de los riscos y piedras grandes que se ven aparentemente secos , están los nacientes de agua cuando esta agua va bajando en chorritos por la montaña va formando piscinas naturales , alrededor de estas nacen los berros y los ñames, hoy en día los cultivan en grandes proporciones , por lo famoso del potaje de berros, plato típico que El rey de España pide y le hacen especialmente cuando visita canarias y recientemente degustado por la Primera canciller alemana Angela Merkel Though every Canarian family has their own special Potaje recipe, I will share with you here my version of this tasty island dish: Auque cada familia tiene su propia receta especial, aquí comparto mi version de este rico plato canario:

Potaje de Berros
Ingredients 750gr (large leaf thick trunk) watercress finely cut 200g of white beans or fresh pinto beans if they are the dry kind we musk soaked them in water the night before 700gr potatoes (350g + 350g) 150g yam 350g of sweet potatoes (175gr + 175gr) Best yellow inside 1 large onion 2 corn on the cob (freshly cut) 125gr of thick pork belly 200g fresh bacon 1 dash of mild olive oil 5 cloves crushed garlic salt to taste
Ingredientes 750gr de berros de troncos gruesos y cortados pequeños 200gr de judías blancas o pintas frescas si son secas debemos remojar la noche anterior 700gr de papas (350gr + 350gr) 150gr de ñame 350gr de batata (175gr+175gr) amarilla por dentro mejor 1 cebolla grande 2 piñas de millo (que esten frescas partidas) 125gr de panceta de cerdo cortada gruesa 200gr de tocino fresco 1 chorrito de aceite de oliva suave 5 dientes de ajos machacados sal al gusto Soak the beans overnight in a pot till tender than add the pork belly and the
bacon with 2-3 litres of water. Bring to the boil and add half of the ingredients to drain in this way the potatos will become soft and will give it that thicknes necesary for this soup(apotajado) after about 15 minutes add the rest of the potatoes and when almost ready (the rest of the cooked ingredients) you add the crushed garlic and oil Se pone en una olla agua suficiente 2 o 3 litros las judías, la panceta y tocino. Last week at the ExpoMeloneras exhibition centre I had the privilege of attending a day make-up course with one of the greatest stylists and make up artists to come from these islands, Carmelo Hernandez Santana, he is considered one of the best body painters in the world but it seems his passion is not just for make up as he also came 6th at the Salon Look International expo in Madrid (a prestigious and unique event in Spain) giving The Canaries a very important place in this sector. His makeup workshop was one of the highlights of the Gayfair 2011 Expo. Hernandez offered some simple tricks to applying make up to suit individual occasions and demonstrated how to transform day make up into a more glamorous effect for the evening, and I’ll share some of these little secrets with you, so you too can practice this artistry in no time.
First of all, choosing the right type of make up according to your skin is most important, if you are lucky enough to have a clear complexion, fluid make up is recommended as it is lighter to apply and blends easily, but if what are you looking for is to conceal imperfections, then cream foundation will be a better option as it provides better coverage. Secondly, how you apply foundation is key to getting the right effect, little by little dabbing on with a sponge will avoid dragging make-up from one place to another, controlling the amount going into the different areas in the face and making it look smoother.

So with this subject in mind I went looking for a pretty pair to go with my article and came across a most beautiful shop, near the Faro de Maspalomas in Meloneras, called Angels. The first thing that caught my attention was the really lovely hand made shoes and matching handbags on display. I just had to talk to the owners of this wonderful emporium as it is not often that I have come across so original an establishment on the south of the island.
Desirability Shoes are beautiful objects. Nice shoes are pieces of art. It feels good to hold them, to look at them, and most importantly to wear them.
Angels is the creation of two Swedish sisters, Carlota and Sofia, one of whom, about 20 years ago, came to study Spanish and along the way found love so decided to stay, her sister followed a few years after. Together they opened their their first shop in the Faro 2 shopping centre. They work closely together to choose the clothes they want to sell, travelling throughout Europe for inspiration and picking up gorgeously stylish pieces
along the way, bringing them to Gran Canaria. They have a lot of love for their work and collaborate closely with Spanish shoe designer Belen Doñate creating exclusive pieces unique to their shops, for instance their Angels kitten heeled sandals, embellished with jewellery and the image of an angel or their Glam Sport shoes, (this was an idea that one of the sisters hit upon after musing about why nobody seemed to make a shoe that was both beautiful and comfortable at the same time, like her own favourite pair of flats) You can find a bit of something for everyone here regardless of your age, budget or size and they have beautiful things to suit every taste. If you have a limited budget visit their outlet shop in Faro2 or for the newest collections get down to Paseo Meloneras for some instant shoesatisfaction. As recently as 2008, the Food Standards Agency recommended the removal of six artificial colourings from food products. At a common sense level, one just needs to think about what they are made from – petroleum, acetone and coal tars. I just wonder how long it will take for all artificial colourings to be banned – but by then the damage will have been done!
Tartrazine (E102) – made from benzene, a runoff from crude oil, mixed with nitric and sulphuric acid. Causes hyperactivity, linked to allergic reactions and migraine.
Ponceau 4R (E124) - prepared from coal tar. Causes hyperactivity and is believed to cause problems for asthmatics. Considered to be a carcinogenic substance and banned in many countries. Allura red (E129) - manufactured from coal tar or petroleum. Causes hyperactivity and linked to many allergic reactions. If you want to do yourself a favour, it seems wise to avoid them as much as possible. Read your labels carefully and if in doubt, leave it out! Remember that these colours are not found only in foods, but also in medications and vitamins, personal care products, and various other products.

Stress, More Stress, Distress ... Been There ... Done That. Monday morning. The alarm clock fails to ring...again. I am late for work .Half asleep, I fall down the stairs crash landing on the china- cabinet .
The doctor grabbed one and said “I’m a doctor, I save lives. I must live,” and jumped out. The scientist said, “I have just developed a miracle cure that will forever eliminate human stress. I am one of the smartest people in the world. I must live.”
I watch in horror as my Mum’s favourite piece of Dresden smashes to bits. I limp into the kitchen where I slice my finger instead of the bread. As I search for a plaster, the bloody (literally) toaster catches fire. The cat is being sick on the rug. Forget breakfast.
He grabbed a parachute and jumped. The priest smiled down at the boyscout. “My son, I’ve lived many long and happy years; you are young, your whole life ahead of you. Here, take the last parachute, jump - and God bless you”.
Grabbing my coat I rush outside. The car refuses to start. My mobile rings. It’s my boss. He fires me. Suddenly I identify with the expressions ‘too much angst’, ‘running on empty’ etc; I am tearing my hair out. As I have no job I am no longer late for work, but oh boy.... AM I STRESSED! Of course, moderate amounts of stress can be positive motivators and performance enhancers, whereas high anxiety situations, such as moving house, money worries, or relationship problems are major contributors to tension -- big time. According to the Samaritans one in five callers speak of chronic stress, while a third of all work-related sickness is stress related. I heard a conference speaker on the subject of ‘Stress management in the workplace’. Raising a glass of water, she inquired, “How heavy is this?” Answers ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz. “The absolute weight doesn’t matter”, she said. “ It all depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it straight out in front of me for a minute, no problem. If I hold it for an hour my right arm aches. If I hold it out in front of me for a whole day- you may need to call me an ambulance! In each case it’s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.” “That’s the way it is with stress. She continued, “If we carry our burdens out in front of us all the time, as the burden increases, we reach high levels of stress. We may become unable to cope, so we must find ways to de-stress before we encounter distress.
The first thing to do is put the glass of water down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we’re refreshed, we can carry on dealing with the burden - coping better each time a little at a time. Don’t carry the day’s problems through to the evening and on into a sleepless night. Find a way to relax; pick it up tomorrow - if needs must - after you’ve rested” she concluded. Avoiding stressful situations in a world full of hassles, deadlines and demands is not easy. Hope comes in the form of many tried and tested ‘therapies’. Effective anger and stress management, massage, exercise, prayer, music, and humour to name but a few. These tips may help us ‘lighten up’. 1* Accept the fact that some days you’re the pigeon and some days you’re the statue!
8* Some mistakes are too much fun not to repeat. 9* You may be only one person in the whole world, but you may also be the whole world to one person. Personally I find laughter a great stressbuster. The following old howler is one that always raises my spirits. A doctor, a scientist, a boy-scout and a priest were passengers on a small private plane. Suddenly, the plane developed engine trouble and started to go down. The pilot grabbed a parachute. Shouting to the passengers to follow suit, he bailed out.
The boy thrust the parachute back at the old priest and yelled, “Let’s go Father. The smartest man in the world just jumped out an aeroplane wearing my rucksack.” *(Quite a topical tale, given the recent daring- do of our intrepid Editor, who voluntarily jumped from an aeroplane to raise money for the current ACCM Charity Campaign. Bravo Ed!) And finally... the satisfying sensation of eating something sweet and pleasurable is a proven stress-buster. So in between fervent prayers and practising my deep- breathing /relaxation techniques I am working hard to save the earth.....it’s the only planet with chocolate!

I come in to contact with a very wide variety of clients from all backgrounds and walks of life, who have been suffering from panic attacks of one kind or another, and very often I hear them say such things as “When I get a panic attack, I’m afraid I might die.” When I hear this it provides an opportunity to question the true nature of that fear. I sometimes question it in this way “is it really a fear of dying or rather a fear of truly living?” Let me give you an example: A person who has suddenly and tragically lost someone very close to them, and even after a long period of grieving has ended up stuck in a cycle of torturous and unfounded guilt, based on an unfounded belief that “if only I had been able to do ‘this’ or ‘that’ then maybe that person would still be here.” In this kind of situation the following question can be asked “Do you really love that person, and if so would that person wish you to live the rest of your life torturing yourself and making yourself ill because of them?” And if you have shared love with each other then out of respect for the love which you feel for each other then isn’t this the very reason to begin to truly live your life fearlessly out of respect for the love you feel for that dear person? Love is something which demands absolute respect on every level, physically, mentally, emotionally, (and if we wish to mention the ‘S’ word) and Spiritually. And this respect is due first and foremost towards ones self and then can be expressed courageously, exuberantly, passionately, and unconditionally towards those people around us who we in turn love and care for...but first and foremost we need to look towards ourselves in a more self respecting way, and on this note one can ask another question of major relevance: “What do you feel you really deserve?” Are you more familiar with what it feels like when you describe in great detail the many reasons why things aren’t going the way you want them to? Or, are you more comfortable in describing why, what and who are the obstacles standing
in the way of your progress? All to often we blame others as being the cause of our problems and we constantly restate and reaffirm this belief, and by doing so not only is this likely to make you feel stuck but on an other level it also holds that person in a particular perspective and in some respects doesn’t allow them the opportunity to change for the better. In doing this we are short-changing ourselves, or shooting ourselves in the foot, metaphorically speaking of course, because by doing so we constantly recreate the same experiences over and over again and then we wonder why we feel stuck, or misunderstood, or not heard, or not valued, or not loved, or not paid enough. So why not try a little experiment? Start to speak about those situations (or people) which may have felt stagnant, as if they are no longer so, and instead speak to yourself quietly in your own mind about why and how you are worth all of those wonderfully abundant gifts which you ideally would like to experience in your life, courageously and shamelessly, because, quite simply, you deserve nothing but respect from yourself and from the outer world around you, more and more so the more you choose to speak of these things as THINGS YOU CAN HAVE from NOW. Night Surfing and Hot Chocolate
On 6th May, University Surf School held the first of its series of Night Surf Sessions, helped and funded by Juventud. The initiative aims to give youngsters another way to enjoy a Friday night. With places free for all young people from 14 – 34, the event gave no one the excuse not to sign up! Surf Club Surf-Canaries decided to pay University Surf School a visit and join them on their first night surf… On arrival we were greeted by some pretty big and unruly waves. We had a great sun-set surf but deemed it a little dangerous to be in much longer after dark (with the waves breaking so far out, the flood lights didn’t reach that far). Still, it was a great experience to see Las Palmas
by night from the water, albeit only for a few minutes. Where it was all happening was on the shore line. As the beginners went in the foam waves just by the shore, the floodlights were giving them ample light to enjoy their surf class. TV crew and local press were there interviewing the students and instructors and there was a real good surfer “feeling” on the beach. The Canary News interviewed Hector Medina, one of the directors of University Surf School and organizer of the event. Hector spoke about the help from Juventud (the people responsible for looking after the interests of the young) and the “overwhelming” public response
to the event. He said that the atmosphere had been great and that the event really had a special feeling. Interviewing some of the students, they had nothing but good things to say about the evening which combined physical activity, water, training, that “Friday night feeling” and, of course, a big steaming cup of hot chocolate! Following the surfers night session, it was off back to the surf school for the long awaited hot chocolate and a surf film. So for the rest of our surf club, the night ended eating pizza beachside in Las Palmas. A good way to end an interesting and very different Friday night!

King of the Groms is a surf contest for children under 16 and is a circuit that travels around the whole world, one of it’s stops is here in Gran Canaria! So be sure to check out La Cicer in Las Palmas over the weekend of the 28th and 29th May for a great atmosphere, great surfing and the best kids fighting it out to be this year’s “King Grom”!
