Canary THE
NEWS
We know of several Royal Wedding Parties on Gran Canaria two of the best are likely to be in the Puerto Rico area where a lot of the English residents live. You can expect an array of Union Jack Flags & Bunting, Hats, Wigs & Masks, Bow Ties, Patriotic Fancy Dress, Bunting, Garlands, Streamers, Party Balloons, Novelties and all the traditional
trimmings of a Great British Celebration. Steve and Kim’s “The Pub” in the Puerto Rico’s Centro Comercial have got together with many of the other English bars and venues up at the top of the complex to throw a ‘Giant Street Party’ where there will be raucous fun and entertainment throughout the day. If you would like to follow the wedding in a more tranquil atmosphere then, as previously
reported in issue 42, Mandy and Tony’s Place up at the Tauro par 3 golf course are planning Pimms and canapés and frivolity with a dash of dapper fancy dress surrounded by rolling hills and mountain views from which to celebrate the event. Check out Page 6 for a low-down on the happy couple and the official schedule for the day.

Fuerteventura Balance Fair Thousands of people attended the 1st Balance (Comparison) Fair held on the promenade of Puerto del Rosario, a business meeting at which customers can find the best price for products not on special sale. It was a great opportunity for all bargain hunters. The promenade became a hotbed of people looking for the best bargain. Nobody wanted to miss the 1st balance fair to be held in the Havana municipality. The public success and sales on the day was such that at certain times of day could barely walk for the size of the crowd. From early morning, with awnings and tents set up as a market, about thirty traders settled and had almost no time to place their products, because of a crowd of cruise ship passangers from Mein Schiff 1, which could be seen from the
fair, burst on to the seen with hungry curiosity. Eduardo Paz, president of the Merchants ‘Association of the Leon and Castillo Street and Virgen de la Peña (Coleyca), said “ the Balance is very positive and entrepreneurs are so happy that we want to organise a second one, perhaps in September or October. “ In addition to nosing around the tents in search of deals, the Balance Fair had other attractions. Children less willing to accompany their parents in the tedious task of shopping, prefered to have fun in a nearby park. Meanwhile, the biggest advantage for the parents was to be able to have a few tapas and a beer at the bar. In the background could be heard the concert of the Night, from the drum and percussion students from the Island School of Music.
New Politics of Compromiso SBT The COMPROMISO party of San Bartolome de Tirajana has presented to the Board of Elections their list of candidates to the City of St. Bartholome before the next elections on May 22. “Instead of simply backing security experts, technicians, accountants, students and housewives with Francisco Perez at the front, the list is made up young people and residents of the municipality, for many of them this is their first foray into politics,” said a statement from the organization.
This is new project that comes with the enthusiasm and motivation of those who want to offer an alternative to the change demanded by residents in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. Compromiso is one of the newest political parties on the islands and heavily back

Menorca Election Candidate Boobs Sole Sanchez of the freshly formed Partit Democratic de Ciutadella (PDC) party has had to rethink some of her campaign publicity in the race for the Ciutadella town council on the western side of the Balearic island Menorca after being reported to officials over equality and sexism allegations when she released an image of herself with breasts bared, being grabbed and squeezed by a man from behind over the compelling slogan “Dos Grandes Argumentos” or “Two Big Arguments”. It is not clear if the words should have any more depth of meaning than the obvious.
Her website blog [http://partitdemocratic.wordpress. com] reveals Ms Sanchez to be, at least in translation, an impassioned free thinker who does not feel a need to constantly conform to illusions of right or left and instead appears to recognise that every political candidature is coloured by many different factors and that it is an over simplified false economy to try and reduce politics on any level to just two sides whether it be blue or red, good or evil, or any similar polarisation. She appears to believe that dialogue, politics and life need to be more fluid and more dynamic than that.
A further image showing Ms Sanchez kneeling down in white underwear with her ankles and wrists bound in a fetishistic manner was also criticised heavily as “demeaning to women”. The opposition Esquerra de Menorca party denounced her immediately and sought the support of the local Institut de la Dona (Women’s Institute) who demanded the advertisements be withdrawn. Ms Sanchez staunchly defended the images saying she is a huge supporter of women’s rights. ”No one is more feminist than me,” she reportedly told local media. “Each person is free to express themselves as they please, and I use my breasts and my body as I want.”
She continued by saying “everyone has the right to use their body as they see fit, and if all the opposition can do is just sit and watch, that is their problem.”

Wedding of Prince William of Wales and Kate Middleton Following the announcement the couple gave an exclusive interview to ITV News political editor Tom Bradby and hosted a photocall at St. James’s Palace. On 12 December 2010, Buckingham Palace issued the official engagement photographs; these were taken on 25 November, in the state apartments at St. James’s Palace, by photographer Mario Testino. It was announced that the day of the wedding will be declared a public holiday throughout the United Kingdom, formal confirmation being made by the Queen in Council on 15 December 2010.
Clarence House announced on 16 November 2010 that Prince William is to marry Kate Middleton, William’s long-time girlfriend, “in the Spring or Summer of 2011, in London”. They were engaged in October 2010 while on a private holiday in Kenya; William gave Kate the same engagement ring that his father had given to William’s mother, Diana, Princess of Wales - an 18-carat white gold ring with a 12-carat oval sapphire and 14 round diamonds. It was announced at approximately the same time that, after their marriage, the couple will live on the Isle of Anglesey in Wales, where Prince William is based with the Royal Air Force. The Prince of Wales said he was “thrilled ... they have been practising long enough”, and Queen Elizabeth II said she was “absolutely delighted” for the couple, giving her formal consent to the marriage, as required by the Royal Marriages Act 1772, in her British privy council on the morning of the engagement. Congratulations also came in from the Queen’s prime ministers, including Prime Minister of Australia Julia Gillard, who has moderate republican leanings. Further, Pete Broadbent, suffragan Bishop of Willesden, who has known republican views, published his reaction to the wedding announcement on Facebook. He later acknowledged that his words were “offensive” and subsequently apologised, but his superior, Richard Chartres, Bishop of London, instructed him to withdraw from public ministry “until further notice”.
As 29 April falls six days before elections for the Scottish Parliament, this has attracted political comment in Scotland. John Curtice, a professor of politics at the University of Strathclyde, stated that the date was “unfortunate” and was “likely to see the Royal Family getting caught up in political debate”
of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. As such, he is second, behind his father, in the line of succession to the throne in 16 independent states known as the Commonwealth realms. William was educated at Ludgrove School, Eton College, and the University of St Andrews, after which he was commissioned from Sandhurst in the Blues and Royals regiment of the Household Cavalry. He later transferred to the Air Force and went on to become a full time pilot with the Search and Rescue Force. Kate’s Early Life

She is primarily of English descent, but with a few distant Scottish and French Huguenot ancestors. Her paternal family came from Leeds, West Yorkshire, while her mother’s maternal family, the Harrisons, were workingclass labourers and miners from County Durham. The couple met while undergraduates at the University of St Andrews, where they both lived at St Salvator’s Hall during their first year, after which they shared accommodation in the town for two years.

As is tradition, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh will be the last members of the royal family to leave Buckingham Palace, arriving at the Abbey for 10.45 am. The bridal party will then leave the Goring Hotel in time for the service to begin at 11 am. 8 Your Questions Answered
‘The Canarian Lawyer’ My husband received an inheritance from his parents
Will the inheritance my husband received (first from his father, later from his mother) be half mine as our joint property? No. The inheritance your husband received will become part of his private assets and not enter into your joint property, which belongs in equal halves to both spouses. Whether your husband passes away before you, it will be considered a seperate case and subject to a further inheritance: according to your husband’s wishes expressed in his will. In the case of there being no will, his complete inheritance will be passed to his children without prejudice to widow’s usufruct [the right to use and derive profit from a piece of property belonging to another, provided the property itself remains undiminished and uninjured in any way]. In the case that your husband wants you to benefit, he has to make a last will, if he has not done one yet. If he has made one
and needs to modify something, he must make another last will in order to strike out the already established will. Fake €50 note: who keeps it? While I was paying at a shop they told me that according to a cash analyzer the €50 banknote was false. They gave it back to me and I took it to the bank in order to change it, but they kept it and didn’t give me a new banknote. Do I have the right to get my €50 back? No. You lose this €50 banknote. In these cases, a store or establishment that receives a fake banknote is obligated to withdraw it from circulation and to take note of the identification of the client who tried to pay with the banknote, in order to hand this information in to the police. They have to give you a receipt to confirm that they kept the banknote, which will also be handed in to the police and, eventually, to the Bank of Spain for scientific study. Subsequently, the police will start an investigation in order to trace the origin of the note. What you

must not do is to try to pass it on to any other person or entity. Because, if by chance, this intentional attempted fraud is discovered, it will be considered a crime and be punished as such. To open letters of other people I have a neighbor who is opening my letters and after reading them returns them into the letter-box. How can I find out who? Hire a detective. Article 197 of the Spanish Criminal Code points out that: anybody who, so as to discover secrets or to violate privacy, seizes another persons documents, letters, email messages, etc., will be penalized with imprisonment of between one and four years and a fine. Blue Parking Zone Rules I was fined and my car towed away from the blue parking zone where I normally park it in Playa del Inglés; I didn’t have a ticket displayed. I’m sure that I read in the newspaper
about a Spanish law that the police may fine you if you do not have a ticket in your car, but will not tow your car away unless it is badly parked, causing an obstruction or a danger to the rest of the traffic. Can you clear this up for me, was I right or wrong? The police can fine and tow away your car if you do not pay for a ticket to park or if the ticket isn’t inside the car or it is not visible. The police can also tow away your car if it is in the blue parking zone and has been there more than double the authorized time. These are rules of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana town hall. Each municipality though is able to make its own rules.

Why the Pound in Your Pocket is Disappearing The last 3 weeks or so has seen the Pound trade against the Euro from lows of 1.129 to a high of 1.1650 which has quite an impact on any money you transfer. Pretty good news though if you are sending your money back to the UK . The recent change in rates means that if you are transferring a £1000 instead of getting around €1150 you will probably receive today around €1120, it doesn’t sound a great deal but multiply by 12 and all of a sudden you have lost at least €360 per year. Now why is is happening? You have no doubt read quite a bit about all the problems in the Eurozone, not least recently with Portugal having to go cap in hand to the ECB and IMF for a bailout and the rumour mill still persists that Spain will follow. Nobody is too sure if this will happen, what we do know is that Spain certainly is trying to manage its economy in a far stronger way than Portugal had been. It has introduced a string of measures to tackle the problem by increasing taxes etc and it hopes to avoid non repayment of its debt. -The interesting time will come at the end of this month when its due to pay back interest on funds raised earlier. Whilst much has been said about the Eurozone, the UK has unfortunately been creaking a little and occasionally this goes unnoticed by the general public although a quick look at the rates of exchange will confirm all is not right in the UK.
Consumer confidence is low, retailers have been issuing various profit warnings and just recently have announced the lowest March retail figures for a considerable time. The manufacturing sector is also showing concerns due to the increase in raw material costs. Add this to the poor housing sector with an insufficient number of new mortgage applications and you start to answer why the pound is performing so poorly. Generally people in the UK are attempting to pay off their debt as they are concerned about the possibility of interest rate hikes and the impact on their pockets, they are paying off debt rather than incurring it. Of late eyes have also been focussed on UK banks as the Independent Commission will soon publish its report on the Banking sector. The aim will be to ensure the British taxpayer will not have to bail out the banks in the event of another crisis. One of the views is that it appears the banks will have to ring fence customer savings and deposits from any high risk future investments. Further far reaching proposals will be included, so keep your eyes open for the publication of this report. With the recent interest rate hike in the Eurozone and concerns in America it is clear that investors have an appetite for the Euro hence the additional reason for its current strength, as at the moment it is the favoured currency. Against the dollar it has recorded recent highs
of 1.4490 and the probability of going beyond this figure is not that far away. As with all things the market can change quickly so if you don’t need to change your money now then it may just be worth the wait. Are you a gambler? Letter of the week Dear Editor, I am forwarding this information to you, after reading with interest your letters page in issue 44 of your newspaper about someone having similar problems with this company. My problems with this company have gone on for a very long time. Initially it was with a internet dongle, this was mis sold as it would not work with Apple computers, so i could only use it with my laptop, I called them, and they agreed to cancel the service, I never heard anything from them again about it. Many months later, I received a solicitors letter demanding money for the remainder of the contract, and after many phone calls, all extremely unhelpful and with lack of knowledge, I just decided to pay to end the stressful situation, several month later, I received a further solicitors letter and demand for payment, neither telefonica nor the solicitors could confirm over the phone what the charge was for, but they were very clear that it had to be paid. Again I paid to end another stressful situation, and of course I did not want there inadequacy to affect my credit rating. More recently, I have stopped using my bank account due to the end of a nomina paying job. Previous to this happening I called Telefonica, to advise them that my Movil, Fijo and ASDL would need to be paid with a bar coded factura, not as direct debit anymore, this was no problem said the operator. however when it was time for the bill to arrive, my movil line was restricted, I called them and of course they told me that I had not paid my bill. Well you can see how this conversation would go on and for the following three months this continued to happen, myself calling them to confirm they had made the changes, telefonica operators failing to make the change, them my line being restricted, and finally to add insult to injury they charge me each time for my inconveniences as reconnection fee.
Thank you in advance, and can I just say that I look forward to your paper being delivered to the School that i work in, We have a coffee and a chat about the contents when our lessons finish on Saturdays. Yours Sincerely Daniel Dixon Thank you for your letter. We have had many letters and emails on this subject and are looking further in to the situation with consumer rights and the telecommunications industry. I hope more of our readers will write in to tell us about their telecoms problems and also if anyone has managed to succeed where others might have failed. We have discovered that approx a third of all consumer complaints in Spain appear to be about the dodgey phone system and a lack of customer service or satisfaction. You are not alone. We will be reporting back soon. Contact our connections team by email to Connections@TheCanaryNews.com if you would like to discuss changing provider. In the mean time you could also try these sources of information: the Canaries Government Consumer Information http://www.gobiernodecanarias.org/cicnt/temas/ consumo/informa/ Federación de Usuarios Consumidores Independientes http://www.fuciweb.org/ Oficina de atencion al usario de telecomunicaciones http://www.usuariosteleco.es/Paginas/index.aspx
I recently contacted Telefonica by telephone to change my service and cancel some of them, and they were so unhelpful that i searched for an email address on the internet, I found one and sent an email outlining my problems, the reply was that i should call 1004 if I wanted to cancel my services, no response to my complaints. I hope that you can take this up with Telefonica, or if you have any information about the Canarian/Spanish equivalent of OFTEL could you please publish this.
Net and Computer problems?
Connections@TheCanaryNews.com
I often want to try and get information from local organisations or even the council or government however almost none of them provide an English language service. Can my computer help? Indeed there are many different types of translation software on the market, many of which you have to pay for. Whilst it is very useful to have your computer make a translation you must remember that it is liable to be very basic and not really good enough for official correspondence. For that you’ll actually need someone who speaks the language to translate. That said using tools like Google Translate or even, as I do, the Google Chrome web browser, you will find that you can get the sense of most pieces of information regardless, pretty much, of which language it comes in. Furthermore this particular browser even has a function allowing it to detect which language you are looking at
and will ask you if you would like it to automatically translate that language when ever it comes across it. And if you find yourself having an informal conversation with someone who does not speak your language well, it is often very liberating for both of you if you use Google Translate to attempt to understand each other’s meanings. Though my Spanish is not yet good, I do find myself often writing to people here in English with the basic computer translation directly underneath I have found that I can communicate very well with some people who have no English at all. And as for finding the right information it is invaluable to me. Though I do find that I need to translate my search term first, then enter that into my google search which will bring me back the foreign language web page results which can then be translated back to English.
Over the last month or so The Canary News has been helping a local group to raise awareness and funds for the Canarian Breast Cancer support group ACCM. We originally met with much apathy from the local community who could see no real reason to get involved. Local businesses did not want to donate either money or resources, English speaking residents felt that it was not really for them to be supporting a Spanish speaking Canarian organisation and there were even occasions when those few who did say they wanted to help, seemed either too busy to have time to do anything. What’s more, we encountered a lot of scepticism. Many people, whether they be locals or foreign residents, have a great deal of trouble imagining that we or any organisation like us could ever have a selfless reason to be involved with a charity campaign. There seems to be some inherent suspicion that the only reason people try to do anything is because they themselves will somehow gain. Whether that is publicity, kudos or even some proportion of the money that is meant to go to the good cause. Personally I feel this is a very negative way to look at the world. Fact is, if we all didn’t help each other at some time then few things would get done well. Sometimes of course there are people who go in to charity fund raising with selfish intention, but in the main most people just get a little kick out of helping others, especially if those others might feel alone or isolated or that they have lost control of their destiny through illness or misfortune. And it led me to think about the fairly recent phenomenon in England of the Charity Mugger, or Chuggers as they are known. A chugger is employed to stand on a street with lots of people on it and use their sunny charm to try and befriend a stranger, then get their direct debit details for a one-off or a monthly contribution. They must they charming and they must be extremely resilient, as nine times out of ten they will be avoided at all costs or simply told where to go. However the technique does work. They have increased the amount of money being regularly donated to UK charities by tens of millions of pounds. True they take between 10% and 50% of everything donated. This builds companies, provides jobs and it vastly increases the money that charities receive, vital to many of them. And the chugger, well they get a basic living wage and feel like they are doing something useful. So everybody wins. Although we have not resorted to pouncing on people in the street, we have found as our campaign has gone on that often there is a lot of latent support for a charitable idea however people must be approached in the right way. They must all be recognised for their contribution. This requires diplomacy on all sides, there are feelings involved. I wholly admire anyone who can do it. At the end of the day it is important to not lose site of the goal, that is to find Support, Community and Awareness and ensure we can hold our heads high once we have done a job well. Between GLAY and The Friends of Puerto Rico (and many others) more than €8000 has already been raised in this campaign and no one is more surprised than the charity themselves who had such support in the English speaking community. We are proud to have been involved because 100% of the funds raised will go to the ACCM. I hope you join us all on May 19th when we will present the final figure to ACCM (see centre pages)

Spanish Imposition? Did Prince William forget to invite his cousin Crown Prince Filipe to the big day? It appears that the list of invited dignitaries did not include the heir to the Spanish throne despite his parents having been confirmed as attending. A Spanish official is reported to have told The Telegraph “It is extraordinary Only King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia were invited.”
Westminster Abbey was found for Manuel Colonques, the owner of Spanish tile company Porcelanosa, and his wife Delfina, who has made significant donations to Charles’ charities, including a large proportion of the cost of a lavish charity dinner at Buckingham Palace in February. When Prince Filipe married the glamorous ex television reader Princess Letizia, in Madrid in 2004, Charles was himself a guest of honour, so it is of little surprise that he has seemingly now felt the necessity to intervene and address the apparent oversight to ensure his cousin, also a great–great–great–grandson of Queen Victoria, will be added to the final list of official attendees.
It is said that Filipe was acutely aware of the potential diplomatic incident whilst hosting a gala dinner for The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall at the beginning of April [see p.24] where he is supposed to have emphasised the need for a solution to be found to the old dispute over Gibraltar. It is even more embarrassing when you consider that extra space at
Simply Pink Pool Party Breast cancer fund-raising afternoon in Blue Star Apartments, Puerto Rico With the mouth-watering smell of barbecuing meat in our nostrils, bright pink balloons bobbing round our heads and the throbbing sound of the Blackeyed Peas’ hit “I’ve got a feeling, tonight’s gonna be a good night” ringing in our ears, we really did feel that it WAS going to be a good, good night. Or rather, in our case, a good, good afternoon anyway! We’d just arrived at Blue Star Apartments in Puerto Rico where Missee Drag and Gary Melling from KissFM radio station were hosting the “Simply Pink Pool Party”, one of the many events in GLAY’s fund-raising campaign for the Canarian breast cancer charity ACCM which The Canary News is proud to be supporting. They had promised us an entertaining and charity focused afternoon – a promise on which they definitely delivered! With a mixture of locals and holidaymakers relaxing by, or in, the pool in the heat of the sun, the show opened with the tremendous voice of Chloe Leigh. “I’m originally from Sheffield”, she told us afterwards “and worked on stage in Yorkshire before moving to Gran Canaria 6 years ago. I work mainly as a solo singer with several different personas including Cher and Abbalicious which I’ll be performing as later”. Her rousing rendition of “It’s raining men” soon got the audience into the spirit
of a fun and lively afternoon as she encouraged everyone to join in. From the small children clapping along and dancing about in the pool to the adults propping up the bar, her enthusiasm was visibly catching across the packed complex. With great performances from Chris Spencer as Tom Jones and Benny Ljungstedt as Whacko Jacko it began to feel like a truly international line-up. Benny, originally from Stockholm, has been performing here for over 2 years and his amazing song and dance routine to “Thriller” had you wondering w h e t h e r Michael Jackson really had died a couple years ago! Unlike many Whacko Jacko tribute acts who mime to the music, Benny genuinely sings and what a great Michael Jackson he makes. With further entertainment from Angelo Volante, originally from the UK where he supported the likes of Shirley Bassey and Roxy Music, Missee had certainly gathered together a great set of performers. However, our favourite amongst the superb entertainment was Richard Rossetti, a quietly spoken young man
who suddenly wowed the audience in a “Gran Canaria’s Got Talent” way with his incredibly rich, powerful and deeply sonorous voice. His amazingly strong rendition of Westlife’s “You raise me up” left us visibly astounded by his musical talent. “I was originally trained in musical theatre, starring in a number of different musical productions” commented Richard as we met up with him after his sterling performance. “I’ve only just moved here and am hoping for a long and enjoyable stay”, he added. We’re definitely fortunate to have him join us here in Gran Canaria where we’re sure, from what we heard at Blue Star, that he’ll have a long and successful career! Aside from the excellent entertainment and barbecue there was a serious purpose to the afternoon raising people’s awareness of the ACCM fund-raising campaign. The KissFM radio booth was soon bedecked in bras and bikini tops, ensuring people’s focus remained on breast cancer, and throughout the afternoon the organisers encouraged people to dig deep into their pockets for raffle tickets and to bid for auction items. Perhaps the most poignant story of the afternoon came as Ann Shakespeare and husband James,
on holiday from Ireland, bid €100 for a KissFM T shirt. “ We were all stunned at their kind gesture” commented Missee afterwards. “It turned out that Ann had cancer of the womb 18 years ago, lost her younger sister in January 2011 and has 2 sisters who have have just finished treatment for breast cancer and are now awaiting the all clear!” The Shakespeares’ amazingly kind donation was typical of the spirit of goodwill and generosity across Blue Star that day and had many of the audience close to tears. The afternoon drew to a close with Chloe back on stage alongside co-star Angie Vee, together delivering some upbeat renditions from Abba as part of their Abbalicious show routine. With a medley that included “Waterloo”, “Mamma Mia”, and “Fernando” the girls, in their white platform boots, ABBA wigs and costumes, kept the audience in high spirits as they joined in clapping, singing and dancing throughout. A count of the monies at the end of the day revealed that an astonishing €796 had been raised for ACCM! To misquote the Blackeyed Peas again, it really had been a good, good afternoon! What Have The Scandinavians Ever Given Us ?
The British can take credit for monumental inventions including Penicillin, the Television, Telephone & Tarmac among many others. So have the Scandinavians contributed anything useful to modern society except Ikea ?
One invention which we find useful but perhaps don’t give much thought is the humble paperclip. Johan Vaaler, a Norwegian, invented the paperclip in 1899. He patented his invention in Germany as Norway had no patent laws at that time.
They have in fact come up with a few useful inventions over the years. Perhaps the most famous Scandinavian inventor, Alfred Nobel, invented Dynamite. He received allot of criticism over the following years for inventing something so destructive and perhaps wanted to make amends as in his will he donated his vast fortune to establish a number of Nobel prizes.

All kids love Lego and it was invented by Danish Carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen. He started using the word Lego in 1934 and it was based on the Danish for play well, LEgGOdt. However, it was not until 1958 that the company patented the current Lego stud-and-tube coupling system. This system made the models much more stable and the toy became immensely popular all over the world.
Ole Evinrude ( actually born Ole Evenrudstuen ) was a Norwegian that emigrated to the USA where he can be credited with inventing the first functional outboard engine in 1907.
However, another invention of note that can be attributed to Scandinavia is that of Swede Nils Bohlin. He was the inventor of the modern seat belt. His background was as an aircraft engineer where he helped develop the ejector seat. He developed the modern three point seat belt while working for Swedish car manufacturer Volvo as a safety engineer. His invention has no doubt saved millions of lives all over the world and he received numerous letters thanking him right up until his death in 2002 aged 82. The modern Zip is also an invention that can be credited to a Scandinavian although he was living in the USA at the time. Gideon Sundback patented the “hookless fastener” in 1913. An invention which is very popular in Scandinavia and other Northern European countries is the Cheese Slicer. It was invented by Thor Bjørkelund, a carpenter from Lillehammer in Norway. It’s design was based on the carpenter’s plane and he patented it in 1925. It is very popular in these countries due to their love of open sandwiches and hard cheese making cheese slices ideal.

The Green Prince
Giles Paxman & Charles In his speech opening the gala dinner for Charles and Camilla in Madrid a couple of weeks ago, The Prince of Asturias is reported to have made mention of The Black Prince, Charles’ 14th century predecessor who also visited the peninsula. This led Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain, Giles Paxman to dub Charles “The Green Prince” during his visit. Referring to His Highness The Prince of Wales’ focus on the environment, natural resources and sustainable development, Paxman wrote in his online blog “Of course, there were other important elements in the programme: a “family” lunch with The King and Queen and The Prince and Princess of Asturias, a ceremony at the Town Hall to receive the golden key to the city (which was first handed to the Duke of Wellington when he liberated Madrid from Napoleonic forces in 1812), and a delightful concert... But the theme of sustainable development kept recurring throughout the day.” The Prince discussed the principle of “accounting for sustainability”, that is factoring in the ‘real’ cost of depleting our natural resources with Prime Minister Zapatero. He then met with participants at the HQ of energy company Repsol in a workshop organised by the embassy to work on the potential for using algae
to produce biofuels; after which he met with business leaders to discuss their role in bringing about a low carbon economy crucial to switching to clean technologies and in determining the environment that our children and grandchildren will inherit. Prince Charles rounded off the day by meeting with the Spanish Minister for Rural Affairs and The Sea to discuss fisheries conservation work. Depletion of fish stocks is one of the greatest challenges to food security and the livlihood of fishing communities in many developing countries.
Paxman continued “I was struck both by the Prince’s deep personal commitment and, more importantly, by how much he has actually done over the years to bring these issues to the public’s attention. He has been criticised in the past for his concern for the environment but on most of the issues he has raised he has been proved right.”

The Ship that Died
I am not a great lover of things nautical; after all, I tend to get seasick when having a bath if the water is too deep. However, the recent announcement of a new ferry service from Las Palmas in Gran Canaria to Huelva in Peninsular Spain, with a journey time of just over one day, as compared to nearly three days on the alternative service, set me thinking about a once-beautiful ship now lying off a beach on our neighbouring island of Fuerteventura.
to labour disputes and the growing popularity of air travel. The SS America was sold to a Greek shipping company, renamed Australis, and began a new life transporting British passengers who were emigrating to a new life in Australia, as part of a campaign to increase its population. Later, the assisted passage scheme was gradually phased out and long haul flights made air travel more attractive than a long voyage at sea, and in 1977 the Australis made her last voyage to Australia.
This is the story of SS America, a luxury liner that was launched the day before Hitler invaded Poland bringing the world to war in 1939. It was not an auspicious start for a cruise liner having to be immediately converted, not for the planned 1200 passengers on luxury cruises, but destined to become a troop-carrying vessel that would take up to 8000 men to war. The ship was renamed, West Point, and she carried soldiers around the world. Later, she was confined to the North Atlantic route where her speed and manoeuvrability were ideal for outwitting German U boats, gale force winds and the treacherous sea. Troops were carried from the USA to Europe and the wounded, as well as prisoners of war, shipped back to America. After wartime duties, the SS America resumed life as a cruise ship and was seen as one of the most beautiful of the American fleet. After 24 years of service, the ship’s career came to an abrupt end due
There were attempts to reinstate the ship for cruises once again. The SS America was given her original name and
intended to resume life as a floating casino. The first voyage in 1978 was a disaster and angry passengers forced the ship to return to port. The shipping company was sued for $2.5 million and the SS America was held as a surety against debt; the ship’s fate was sealed, and the SS America was to be auctioned. The vessel was then repurchased by her previous Greek owners and was intended to be used as a Mediterranean cruise ship. Italis, as she was renamed, never put to sea. She was sold again in 1980 and renamed Noga, and this time destined to be a floating hotel in Beruit. This plan did not materialise and so this once proud ship was due to be returned to the USA to become a prison ship, but that fell through too. She was sold again and renamed Alferdoss, which means ‘Paradise’ in Arabic. Sadly, it was nothing like paradise and for ten years the ship rotted until damage to her bilge pipe meant that she had to be beached to prevent her from sinking. Finally, a consortium bought her and gave her yet another new name, the America Star. A star she was no longer and, as she was being towed to Thailand to be converted into a floating hotel, the towrope broke in stormy weather off Fuerteventura. She broke into two pieces and what little remains has been slowly disappearing into the sea, leaving part of the bow remaining above the water. This once proud vessel is waiting to be finally claimed by the sea. © Barrie Mahoney

Spanish Lesson
Multi-tasking Verbs As in English, many Spanish verbs or ‘action’ words have more than one meaning – less for you to learn! Some examples include: LLEVAR [yeh-BAR]: to wear, to carry, to take (a person or a thing somewhere), and to take away. TOMAR also means to take, but is used for food, drink, pills and transport. (Yo) siempre llevo mis gafas para conducir (I always wear my glasses to drive) Mucha gente no quiere llevar bolsas pesadas - por eso los supermercados reparten al domicilio. (Many people don´t want to carry heavy bags – that´s why the supermarkets deliver to the home). ¿Qué vas a llevar contigo a la fiesta? – Pues, quizás una botella de vino rosado. (What are you going to take with you to the party? – Um, maybe a bottle of rosé wine). Lleva mucha agua y crema solar a la playa, ¿Vale? (Take lots of water and suncream to the beach, alright?) ¿Con quién va Pedro al concierto el viernes? – Creo que lleva a su novio*. (Literally: with who goes Pedro to the
concert the Friday? – I believe that he takes his boyfriend). Camarero, ¿puede llevar los platos sucios por favor? (Waiter, can you take away the dirty plates please?) *Remember: verb + person = ‘a’ in the middle Useful expressions with ‘llevar’ On signs: COMIDA PARA LLEVAR (food to take away).
Lesson 39
Hacerse amigos = to make friends. Me hago [meh AH-goh] amigos fácilmente (I make friends easily). HACER is also often used in expressions that we´d form with other verbs. So, you need to say: hacemos una fiesta (we make a party) instead of we´re having a party, and quiero hacer una pregunta (lit: I want to make a question), because it would sound silly to say: quiero preguntar una pregunta. ESPERAR: to wait (for)/to hope
Llevarse bien con alguien = to get on well with someone: Me llevo bien/no me llevo bien con los vecinos. (I get on/ don´t get on well with the neighbours). Llevo tres años viviendo aquí (I´ve lived here for three years).
Voy a llegar tarde. Todavía estoy esperando la guagua. (I´m going to arrive late. I´m still waiting for the bus). Espero volver a Pais de Gales para Navidad. (I hope to return to Wales for Christmas).
HACER [a-SAIR]: to do/to make
SUBIR y BAJAR: to go up/down
In the present tense this is a regular verb except in the ‘yo’ (I) form: Yo hago. Remember NEVER to pronounce the ‘h’ though. ¿Qué haces? (What do you do?) – Soy pensionista (I´m a pensioner). Necesito hacer la compra (I need to do the shopping). Estoy haciendo una tarta (I´m making a cake).
Subir means to go/come/bring up but is also used in other ways: ¡Sube al coche! (Get into the car!) Subimos a la azotea (we´re going up to the roof terrace) ¿Puedes subir las cajas al dormitorio? (Can you take up the boxes to the bedroom?) Sube/baja el volumen (put the volumen up/down)
Los precios están subiendo/bajando (the prices are going up/down). Baja del barco (get out of the boat) Baja tu voz, por favor (lower your voice please). Gofio Canario Amasado Mogan to Tasarte
I would like to invite you on a journey into the the heart of Gran Canaria’s little villages. I hope that along the way you will enjoy the wonderful views and smells of the plants which climb the cliffs and the island’s multitude of aromas and colours. Many years ago the Canary Islands people lived by hunting, fishing, breeding stock and agriculture. Each season has it’s own harvest or Zafra as they used to call it. There were no highways around the Island, and only a few towns had tarmacked roads. An event of great importance occurred in around 1957. A highway (today the GC200) was inaugurated linking the western town of Aldea de San Nicolas to the rest of the island through Tasarte, the village where I grew up, and Mogan. This was of great value to the people in the area as now they were able to reach other markets to sell their produce and could communicate easily with the rest of the island. Tasarte is one of the northern towns and is separated by a mountain range from the more southerly village of Veneguera, which itself is separated from Mogan by still more peaks. The Canarians call the mountain ranges Degolladas (literally meaning “Cut throat” however in the Canary Island slang it means the place where a mountain peaks and then starts to descend into a valley) so these “Degolladas” are each named after the towns they cordon; Mogan, Veneguera and Tasarte and so on. This area of Mogan has 57 fresh water wells, and corn mills all along the cliff from the beach to the hills. Past the Degolladas de Veneguera there is a place where you can buy fresh honey and cheese
from the goats raised and cared for by the shepherds who live in the town. Nearby to one of these wells, that of Don Jose and Doña Jacinta, which once watered several crops of bananas, avocados and tomatoes but is now in ruins, there is a hidden place called Tabaibales, a orchard grove near to the beach but that one may only access with the special permission of one of the villagers at a bar in the town square.
Wheat is a very important staple of the Canarian diet. Planted once a year in the fields, it grows green and from its ears from which they make their sautéed corn, and the songs of the people talk of poppies born of these fields which are of many colours and whose choruses lilt: You are like the poppy born among the green wheat And: Pretty little poppy poppy how can you live so alone.
a little water. Knead until the consistency is more or less a firm paste. It can then be rolled into a ball and cut into 1cm medallions. Preparing the salted fish: The fish should be washed prior to cooking to remove the bulk of the salt, leave it to soak overnight during which time you should wash it and change the water twice. Finally, rinse under the tap and move directly to a pot of boiling water. 8-10 minutes should be enough, but don’t over cook as the fish will begin to disintegrate in the water. Serve with the gofio, boiled potatoes and mojo sauce for extra flavour.
When you cut drying wheat root and the grains of the ears are separated out, then cleaned and roasted and later in the Windmill are cast to the ground, falling between two large round stones and while the wind turns, the blades grind and there the grain becomes Gofio Canario.
Since we are passing the Degolladas de Mogan and it’s windmilled Gofio. Let me give you a little welcome with this traditional Canarian recipe...

B.S.G.C Apology Our apologies to the British School of Gran Canaria for an error in edition 44, where we indicated that the school concentrated heavily on teaching Spanish to the children. We have been informed that this is not right. Although the children are given enough hours of Spanish to enable them to enter a Spanish school if desired, the British School of Gran Canaria specifically adheres to the official British National Curriculum and can proudly say that they are one of the very few schools who hold accreditation from COBIS (Council of British International

I needed some down time and a wonderful meal in one of my favourite restaurants – Centrum. nYesss, this would definitely cheer me up after watching my inheritance slowly disappearing before my very eyes. Mother Petunia spends money like it is going out of style and just keeps on going. I’m not going to think about it any more as it just gives me the most violent headache.
And so... to my wardrobe and what to wear tonight. I phoned Mavis and told her to meet me, but absolutely not to wear any pink lycra, linen or in fact pink in any shape or form. Feeling in a subdued mood I decided to cheer myself up by choosing my body hugging leopard print shirt, black linen trousers and of course my trademark D & G platform shoes in a wonderful vibrant red. Man bag over my shoulder and I was ready. Oh! Did look wonderful, and immediately cheered up at the reflection in the mirror looking back at me. Sauntering slowly along the road to the Yumbo Centre, I smiled and nodded to the myriads of people who were staring in reverent admiration at my wonderful outfit. Hey ho, to be the Spit is the most fabulous thing! I spotted Mavis sitting down at a table, right in the path of the waiters going to and fro from the kitchen and immediately refused to join her. No, no, no this table was not up to Spit’s standards, not only because it was too near the kitchen, but also I could see the chef setting up his barbecue practically on the back of the chair I’d have to sit on! Good heavens, didn’t they know who we are? I argued at length with the waiter, asked to see the manager but all to no avail. Mavis was getting quite flustered now at all the attention and begged me to sit down. With a feeling of dread I took my place and didn’t recognise any of the lovely waiters I normally saw. The menu came; it looked the same and had the same dishes but I wasn’t convinced. Had something changed? New manager,
Mavis had heeded my request not to wear lycra or pink, but instead had chosen a vivid orange outfit complete with long black boots and perky little hat. Hmmm, a trifle young for her, especially as she was still carrying a tad extra weight. She’s still totally convinced her better half is having an affair and continues to waft their phone bill in my face. Heavens, Mavis leave it be, I have other fish to fry and with that we both ordered grilled sole – Mmmm my favourite. We decided to try the house wine and after a long wait it finally arrived; the water came halfway through the first course. Speaking of first courses I ordered prawns in sizzling garlic oil and good old Mavis ordered Prawn Cocktail. She had nearly finished hers when mine finally arrived. I was, by this time, slowly turning as pink as the prawns, as the chef behind me started barbecuing steaks – smoke wafting everywhere and getting hotter by the minute. Our main course of grilled sole finally arrived and much to my complete dismay was absolutely full of bones. The salad garnish must have been days old, and as for the ‘French fries’ these were so limp and full of oil it made me feel sick. What has happened here? My wonderful Centrum is apparently no more.
We couldn’t wait to leave, amidst people being packed like sardines into the terrace restaurant. As I looked over the bill, we could see that changes had been made, but the prices were still the same. What a cheek! We vowed not to return here again in a hurry and I have struck it from my list of most favourite places to eat. What can I say, my lovely readers, Restaurant Centrum has been given a huge green Splat from yours truly. Oh well, better luck next time. Muchos bezos, xxxx

With all the preparations and excitement anticipating the biggest Wedding of the year, all many of us in the style world can think of is “What will Kate Middleton’s dress be like?” Who could help but notice that this girl has the Midas touch when it comes to fashion, her choices have created shopping frenzies everywhere since her engagement to Prince William became official. The see through slip dress that she modelled at St Andrews university charity show back in 2002 has since sold for a huge £78,000, the auction attracted interest around the world from as far away as the USA and Asia, The Sapphire Blue ISSA dress the she wore for her engagement sold out within 24 hours and her cream REISS dress used in the engagement photo shoot with Mario Testino had to be re-issued, this dress too sold out as soon as her photo hit the internet. So there is no doubt of her influence on fashion. The best news is that you don’t have to be part of the Royal Family to afford her style as our Kate is The High Street Princess. She used to work as an accessories buyer for British brand JIGSAW and is known to love a good bargain at TK MAXX.
Her style has evolved from safe and conservative to elegant and chic in 3 easy words Simple, Classic and Sophisticated. Here are some tips on how to have your own piece of Kate:
- Her favourite colour is Blue and she likes dresses that are not too short or revealing but perhaps are a little coquettish; you can order this really pretty wrap dress from Lirola’s shop on Etsy which can be made to measure to fit you like a glove for just €70 + postage or try this gorgeous Zara pleated dress for 45.95 at any of their shops or order online at Zara.com

The Nasties – Part 3
for the words hydrogenated, partially or semi hydrogenated or shortening. Thankfully governments are starting to wake up to the health risk associated with these monsters. Some countries (e.g. Denmark) have actually banned their use in food production. Retailers, such as M&S, Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury´s have removed trans fats from their own brand products.
HYDROGENATED FATS (TRANS FATS) This is the third in my series on the “nasties” that hide away in our foods.
Trans fats are chemically altered vegetable oils. They are produced artificially in a process called hydrogenation which turns liquid oil into solid fat.
Trans fats can be found in thousands of processed foods including cakes, pastries, pies, chips, fast foods, sweets, biscuits and many ready meals. They are used because they are cheap, add bulk to products, make the food taste “smooth” without changing the taste (they have a neutral flavour) and give products a long shelf life. They have no nutritional value. The really worrying thing about trans fats is that they are hidden! At the present time, there is no requirement in most countries to include trans fat content on food labels. However, there is a requirement to include hydrogenated fats. Since trans fats are created during the process of hydrogenation the chances are that if the food contains hydrogenated fat, it also contains trans fat. You need to look out
Trans fats are considered to be worse than saturated fats. Saturated fats raise both total and bad (LDL) cholesterol levels. Trans fats do the same, but then go one step further and actually strip out the levels of good cholesterol (HDL). They also increase triglyceride levels in the blood, adding to our risk of heart disease. Trans fats are directly linked to conditions such as heart attacks and strokes. A study suggests that trans fats can also increase the risk of fertility problems. Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, USA, say that consuming just 4g of trans
fats every day can lead to infertility in women. If you want to avoid trans fats you should: • avoid products that list hydrogenated, partially or semi- hydrogenated or shortenings on the label • include lots of fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds in your diet • use only fat-free or low-fat dairy products • avoid fast food, processed foods, high and full fat margarine and baked goods such as doughnuts, pastries and biscuits • use lean cuts of meat and poultry and cook them without skin • use only liquid vegetable oil for frying – do not use hydrogenated oils – solid or semi solid fats (e.g. margarine) • check whether hydrogenated oils have been used when eating at a restaurant or café.
Need to get into shape before this summer? Want to do it the easy way? This is a dream for most of us. Team Work Makes Teams Work
No Man an Island is … So wrote the famous 17th century poet John Donne. In the 1968 musical ‘Funny Girl’, Barbara Streisand sings, “People who need people are the luckiest people in the world”, which conveys, if rather more colloquially, a similar message.
We are also indebted to The Canary News for generous ongoing publicity which helps raise awareness of the charities themselves and promotes our fundraising activities. Not forgetting YOU our readers and punters - who donate/buy books and other items, and attend our various events. YOU are helping make a difference for the underprivileged in our society, as we work together with common goals to fight sickness, poverty and social injustice.
Last December I saw the excellent movie, ‘The King’s Speech’; on Christmas Day I heard the Queen’s Speech and earlier this month I heard Prince Charles speak. All three made reference to the importance of teams, team work and/or team spirit. The film, ‘The King’s Speech’ tells the story of King George VI and how he overcame a speech impediment to make his historic 1939 broadcast to the nation. It starred Colin Firth and won four Oscars at the Academy Awards. Though his was a fine performance, the modest ‘best actor’ was anxious to share the plaudits. He said the significant success of the film was due to dedicated team work - he was collecting the coveted trophy on behalf of the team that had made it possible. No man is an island!
Queen Elizabeth, the daughter of the late King George VI, addressed the nation in her 2010 Christmas message. She talked about the joint effort of a team of scholars commissioned by King James I to translate the Bible into English. The ensuing vivid account of the scriptures was a major co-operative endeavour, as the team reached agreement to promote harmony in both Church and Kingdom.
Still the world’s number one best-selling book, the Queen stated, “400 years later the Bible is as important as ever to build communities and create harmony”. Perhaps with the 2012 Olympics in mind, she added, “no games can be enjoyed without abiding by the rules and no team can hope to succeed without co-operation and mutual respect between the players”. Earlier this month, my husband Paul and I received an invitation from His Royal Highness Prince Charles, and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, to attend a reception at the Ambassador’s residence in Madrid. (Giles Paxman British Ambassador to Spain) It was an honour to represent the voluntary sector, and to profile the work we undertake for various charities both on and off this lovely island. We talked with the Duchess, who was charming , taking a keen interest in our local fund-raising for Breast Cancer Awareness, The local Lions Club, Children in Need and many others. Like Colin Firth, we are humbled, realising that we were chosen only as representatives of the special teams we have had the privilege of working with here in Gran Canaria over the past several
years. We are just facilitators - it is the dedication of our various caring groups and their tenacious team spirit which must take credit for any success. May I, through the auspices of Comfort Corner, take opportunity to thank all who make up the teams that make the teams work. Among those who have raised substantial amounts for charity and who all deserve ‘Academy Awards’ are: the MAD (Making a Difference) Team Libby, Mena and Anna-Maria (Faro Dos Market-see picture); Mena and Padraic for their superb Story-Telling evenings; Ladies’ Luncheon Club Las Palmas for loyal regular giving; Jenni Hymoff Koeppel and her team of volunteers - dedicated to help prevent hunger and malnutrition in 90 families in the Mogan area; La Diva - Elsa McTaggart and Gary Lister who donate a percentage of all CD sales to Children in Need. Some individual honorary ‘MAD’ ones, who motivate the teams by their generous support are: David of Fusion Restaurant; Mandy of Aladdin’s Cave; Voicu, Cornelia and the Coro Gospel, and many of our faithful friends …you know who you are!
A seasonal note to end on - did you know that over 2000 years ago a team was commissioned to herald and spread the true message of Easter? They were a rather motley crew of young men called the disciples of Jesus, specially chosen by him for a specific task. And like all good teams, their work was successful because they shared the essential qualities of any committed team: vision, enthusiasm, faith, and a passion for getting the job done. What was the job? When Jesus appeared to them after his death and resurrection he gave them this team-briefing. “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone everywhere”. A team of just 11 men, dedicated and with a shared purpose, did just that….and the rest is History. Spring has sprung, Easter is upon us. As we enjoy our choccy eggs and fluffy chicks - symbolic of new life - may we pause for thought and remember the reason for the season. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his Only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him, shall not Perish, but have Everlasting Life.” Kay Owen

Feb 20 - Mar 20 Measuring life in terms of ‘success’ is extremely subjective. The universe has a great message for you and your hunches will pay off, so don’t worry, success depends on your viewpoint.
What’s it all about for me? For a start let’s consider the positive personal and transformational aspects of the Easter Egg. The symbol of an egg is a very ancient and useful metaphor for what’s sometimes referred to as the triune nature of the human being. The outer shell represents the physical earthly body which we inhabit, a very useful vehicle which requires, as any vehicle, a certain degree of care and maintenance. It requires fuel, and ideally a good quality fuel in order to make sure that the engine runs smoothly and evenly for as long as possible. Then there is the white of the egg which corresponds to the Soul of the individual, and by this what I am referring to is that part of us which thinks and feels the thoughts and emotions that makes us the unique person who we know ourselves to be. This part of ourselves also requires care and regular maintenance if we are to function in a focused centred and confident way in our dealings with the world around us. Finally there is the yolk of the egg which in this particular symbolism relates to that indefinable spark of divinity, often referred to as the Spirit by most religions or spiritual traditions throughout the world. This Spirit is the eternal spark of life which animates us all from the moment we draw our first breath, and until we finally release that final breath at the end of our earthly journey. So, let’s consider the various ways that we can all explore in order to care for and maintain those three aspects of life. Firstly, are we eating a healthy diet, or are we feeding ourselves a lower grade of fuel? Are there things that we can begin to do to change the way we relate to our physical health and well being? I dare say there are numerous small yet important
ways for us to show more care towards the upkeep of our physical bodies. Then, why don’t we also consider this: just as one washes, takes a shower, brushes the teeth, clips the nails when they’re too long to keep ourselves clean and trim, so also we can take a look at our own mental and emotional hygiene. As we’ve explored previously, our thoughts have a very direct influence and effect on our emotional and physical well being. So are there certain patterns of thought that may have been repeating themselves in unhelpful and self destructive ways? And if you can identify some of those thoughts then why not begin from now to question their authority and validity? Why not try speaking more kindly to yourself and by doing so clear away the clutter that may have been getting in the way of you simply enjoying being who you are? Finally why not begin to actively respect the very life force within you, for this very thing is all too often taken for granted until fate takes from us those who we love, and it is at those times of loss when we really feel just how short our lives truly are. This is not a dress rehearsal. We are alive NOW. So let’s stop messing about, and instead let’s start to shamelessly respect the gift of life which we have all been given... THE TIME IS NOW! So by active contemplation of the symbol of the egg we can all begin to nurture and give precious life to new thoughts and new ideas, new feelings and experiences, new growth and personal development, and by doing so raise ourselves up to a clearer, calmer and brighter contact with the new you.

Girl’s Contest In Las Palmas
Saturday 2nd April, 2011 saw the first day of the very first stage on the Women’s Canarian Circuit of Surf and Bodyboard in La Cicer, Las Palmas. This surf contest is doubly important because it also counts towards the Gran Canaria Circuit and it is possible to gain points to try to classify for the 2011 National Spanish Surf and Bodyboard Championships.
In both the Bodyboarding categories, it was Alexandra Rinder and Olga Henriquez putting on a great performances to make it to both the finals – the under 18s and the Open. Winner of the under 18 category was Noemi Mendoza followed by Alma Garcia, then Alexandra Rinder and Olga Henriquez.
On top of this, there is a section for SUP. SUP stands for Stand Up Paddle. It is a type of surfing that is growing rapidly in popularity; it involves huge surf boards that the surfers stand on and propel themselves onto the wave using a paddle.
In the open event, the winner was Mirka Martin followed by Cinthya Borges (the talented Las Palmas girl got second in both the Open and the Under 18s), Aida Sosa in third and Natalia Flores in forth.
The organisers of the event would like to thank all the participants and collaborators and sponsors for helping make this event a success and hope to see everyone next year!
Participation in the Girls Body Boarding, Surfing and SUP categories was high and that combined with good waves and great weather led to the event being an utter success - much to the relief of the organisers. The thing with surf contests is that it can be extremely well planned with a great turn out and good surfers but if the waves and weather are bad it makes things very difficult!
Results:
The Day Itself First up were the SUPs. The waves were small initially, but as the tide filled in, the waves grew in size. SUPs are a very versatile form of surfing that can be surfed well also in very small waves. The final winner of the SUP category was Pablo Valencia, beating Terrier, Stephane Etienne and Cicer local, Jaime Marrero, who put on a good show for the crowd that came out to support him. Girls Bodyboard Later the girls moved in celebrating the surfing and bodyboard event.
In the Open event, the young Alexandra Rinder beat all the older girls winning the event! Second was Cristina Lorenzo, third Beatriz Trujillo and third, Olga Henriquez.
SURF OPEN FEMENIO
Surf In the Girls surfing event, local Arguineguin girl Virginia Giesen made the semi finals in the open and then went on to win the under 18’s girls event. Second was Cinthya Borges, third Marta Florit and forth Laura Ojeda.
BODYBOARD OPEN 1º Alexandra Rinder 2º Cristina Lorenzo 3º Beatriz Trujillo 4º Olga Henríquez BODYBOARD SUB 18 1º Noemi Mendoza 2º Alma García 3º Alexandra Rinder 4º Olga Henríquez SUP 1º Pablo Valencia 2º Eric Terrier 3º Stephane Etienne 4º Jaime Marrero
After a great day, the trophy ceremony took place on the busy ocean avenue next to the beach in Las Palmas. Apart from the trophies, more than 1,000 Euros worth of prizes were given out to the deserving female competitors.
