E d i to r ’s L e t te r.

About three years ago, i was paging through a magazine, a greek one i remember and began reading an interview in which i found a sentence which can’t get out of my mind till these days. “A e s t h e t i c s   i s   w h a t   w e   n e e d   n o w a d a y s .   A e s t h e t i c s   i n   e v e r y   p a r t o f o u r life. In how we speak, how we act, how we think and how we love.” I think this is the missing part. Especially those days in which our lifes are roughly violated by the economical crisis. A human being needs balance a n d a e s t h e t i c s i s t h e c o u n t e r w e i g h t k e e p i n g t h a t b a l a n c e . We r e a l l y t r i e d t o h a v e t h a t i n m i n d w h e n c r e a t i n g t h i s s e c o n d i s s u e o f G e n t l e m a n s D i a r y. Speaking of magazines, i really believe that the pleasure you get when paging through one depends on the whole picture your eyes receive and not necessarily on the content you find in it. Buying magazines is another pleasure itself, speaking for myself but the the pictures i get when opening them are really disappointing, even if the content is on a good level. The conclusion: combining good content and aesthetics in design can lead to extraordinar y results. The final result - the Ithaka - of a publisher is one thing. The way to get there is another - the most amazing in my opinion. We r e a l l y h o p e y o u e n j o y r e a d i n g t h e W i n t e r i s s u e . We r e a l l y e n j o y e d t h e previous part - the creative one.

* Achieving the sense of aesthetics is a never ending procedure. The only way to achie ve it, is to choose the pictures you see in your life. If the pictures you get in your life are not the ones you like, change them. Every picture you see, every word you hear and every city you travel to, changes your way of seeing things and your sense of aesthetics. This is the philosophy we represent and this is why Gentlemans Diary will change details in every single issue that will come out in the future by trying to achieve perfection. How can we live if we don’t change?

Yeah grandmama told you i wont let you down told you i wont let this rap game change me right? That lyric Kanye West was singing should be the conclusion of a discussion about a man -a gentle one we could say- who changed his life by entering a business that mostly guide new artists to work not on their own terms but following instructions that lead to a stereotype - succeeded one though not original. Originality is Kanyes secret to success. That rap game has not changed him at all. He is definitely an outspoken and controversial celebrity. West shattered certain stereotypes about rappers, becoming a superstar without adapting his appearance, his rhetoric, or his music to anyones thoughts and fantasies. After a huge number of awards, a shoe and clothing line a huge carreer as a singer and a producer, Kanye is still the little boy from Atlanta-Georgia. Prince William aint do it right, if you ask me cause i was him, i would have married Kate and Ashley. A bad boy but also a carrying boyfriend, few years ago by the side of Amber Rose and nowdays for reality star Kim Kardashian. After one year of absence he is back with Jay-Z and the throne. Aint we are now watching the throne, dont let him get in the zone. A world tour that became the highest grossing hip-hop tour and last years eight highest-grossing tour. From US to Germany and back to France Kanye and Jay-Z were singing Niggas in Paris and Otis - hits from their latest album. Work it harder, make it better Do it faster, makes us stronger Kanye came to stay, to inspire us, to entertain us and to try make us stronger gentlemen. The only thing you have to do is sit back and watch the throne.

Kanye West and Jay-Z trying to combine music and art on their latest album “Watch the Throne”, collaborated with Ricardo Tisci, the creative director of Givenchy. “Tisci’s passion for music has taken him around the world. His strong connection to the worlds of rap and RnB led his friends Kanye West and Jay-Z to inlist his services as art director for their collaborative album, Watch the Throne. “I was little bit scared” admits Tisci, “Because I’m not an artist or graphic artist”. He finally agreed and was awed when a meeting sequed into a jam session that involved Rihanna, Sizz Beatz and Pharrell Williams, all freely exchanging ideas “like a family giving opinions to each other,” remembers Tisci, “sharing - which is something that fashion is missing,” he adds paintively. His artwork for the single “HAM” and the album draw Tisci’s childhood passion for mythology and religious iconography and his current engagement with psychedelic prints and graphics.

Kanye West presented his first collection as a fashion designer -Dw by Kanye West- in October 2011 for the season Spring/Summer 2012. The DW collection was launched in Paris to a fashion savvy audience of celebrities and critics alike, from Anna dello Russo and Carine Roitfeld to Lindsay Lohan and the Olsen twins. There's no question, Kanye knows how to make a grand spectacle. The good side of the show: the presentation was undeniably immaculate, as to be expected from the musical mastermind. The clothes, however, were lacking the same brilliance. "Heavy might be the operative word," Style.com's Tim Blanks reported, siting the collection as "a baby Balmain vision of womenswear." Those were the kinder of reports on the line.

Embracing the challenge of a relatively tight inner suburban location, and restrictive building envelope, the designers worked closely with the client to rationalise their “wish list into a concise and deliverable brief. The outcome is a dramatic architectural statement, which has already demonstrated the flexibility to adapt to the constantly changing lives of the family it was designed for. Both the practical and aspirational desires of the client have been delivered in a considered and cleverly articulated package; this realisation is the outcome of a dedicated and rewarding collaboration between architect and the client / builder. This functional and beautiful dwelling goes beyond the prosaic and operates on every level as a flexible family home which centres on the notion of blurring the line between interior and exterior.

Proportionally comfortable in its street context, the Good House is immediately identifiable as something quite different from those surrounding it. The building’s finely detailed, bold rectilinear form is set back from the street amidst a carpet of natural ground cover. Entrance down the side of the house is made via a subtle path formed from old railway sleepers embedded into the ground. The project is realised through a series of simple intersecting and overlapping rectangular forms. Each “box represents a distinct portion of the overall program. The forms of the building have been carefully articulated as both screening devices for privacy, and elements that frame and define views. The robust external cladding that changes appearance significantly in different weather and lighting conditions, gives way to a sophisticated, warm and welcoming interior, filled with natural light, tall ceilings, double height voids and sensuous materials. Extensive use and clever placement of high performance double glazing draws light into every room. The definition of interior and exterior is distorted, with banks of operable louvres and huge sliding glass panels presenting the family with the ability to engage directly with the outside environment, or to close the place down completely, dependant on the variable Melbourne climate.

Fresh, clean and bright, every room feels luxurious without being fussy. The sleek kitchen features white, handlefree storage complemented by stainless steel and white enamel appliances. “A timber storage unit clad in “curly birch” defines a spine through the ground floor, adding warmth to the space and creating contrast in a room otherwise decorated in tones of grey and white” Whilst not overtly “green” in appearance the house design is based on sound ESD principles. Ultimately the design is about handing control to the occupant through a solution that is highly interactive. The passive design solutions, and the options they provide, have resulted in a house that relies little on the active cooling and heating systems that have been installed. The designers deliberately pushed their exploration of the project form and aesthetic, whilst maintaining the highest level of sustainability. The house presents as a blank canvas, onto which the family inserts the detail of their ever changing lives. It provides flexibility for growth and change, with spaces that can be opened up and connected, or closed down for more restricted and intimate use. The primary living zone has been created to serve the clients specific needs for an interactive informal space that caters for the variance of their day to day lives. It flows effortlessly from one functional area to another and can be opened up to embrace the adjoining outdoor spaces, in particular the northerly orientated back yard and lap pool.

He is one of the most influential fashion designers of our time. During his seven years at Dior Homme, not only he created his iconic skinny jeans but he also influenced a generation with his super-tight, rock ’n’ roll male silhouette. Till this day, his monochrome slim-cut suit with a skinny black tie remains an iconic style. Since 2001 he’s produced several books of his photography, often documenting the music scene. London Birth of a Cult, for example, focused on Pete Doherty, and more recently he’s taken on California with shoots at Laguna Beach and San Clemente, and an exhibition called California Dreamin – Myths and Legends of Los Angeles. One of Slimanes latest project, was a four-volume best-of box set titled Hedi Slimane: Anthology of a Decade 20002010. But now he is back after named the new Creative Director at Yves Saint Laurent, which now will be named Saint Laurent Paris, presenting the new collection for Spring/Summer 2013 and shooting the campaign of this collection, not willing to leave his photography-past. The minimal style, the rock soul and the unconventional spirit of the line, made the fashion world recognize that the creative mind of Slimane was missed.

What does luxury mean to you? Luxury is exception. It’s about quality for me, following a tradition, an old-school definition. Luxury is about few, and the best. It’s about attention, intimacy and discretion in excellence. What has been your greatest achievement so far? I don’t think of achievement at all, since I’m never quite satisfied with everything I do. I would say that I’ve always followed my instinct in everything, and my faith and reason. This might be an achievement. I don’t compromise. From what do you draw inspiration? Anyone really, people in general. It’s really random. It’s always about the others. I always interact with someone else, an artist, a musician, someone. I’m not interested in an isolation process – though I can only be creative alone, and even when I was designing, I was designing every single piece or detail by myself. Where do you think fashion is heading? In two opposite directions. Overly global luxury brands embrace worldwide domination and need to figure out how to keep their sense of exception with getting broadband. This is a true danger. Next to this, some sort of dissident independent fashion could come out of nowhere and have an instant success, if the intentions are right and they’re strong-minded. How would you like to influence the creative industries? What sort of imprint would you like to leave behind? I’m the last person that can answer this. I don’t think about this. I just think about my next project, whatever the consequences will be and impression or impact it might have. How do you think technology has influenced fashion? What are the pros and cons? Fashion was reluctant at first to embrace the Internet, and it’s still not totally a natural marriage. With that said, blogs and social networking have considerably enhanced the power of fashion and changed its purpose. Fashion became entertainment, just like Hollywood is entertainment. Fashion is finally a global consideration and, of course, a global fashion business at last. Do you think websites will eventually replace print magazines? They already do, I believe, but magazines have to understand that they become the real place for some sort of creative quality, in photography, graphic design and content. Glossy magazines need to become glossier, rarer, more exclusive and create that real sense of exception to exist next to the immediacy and globalisation of the fashion www. Music plays a big role in your photography. And music, photography and fashion seem to go hand in hand. How does it affect your work? My work is always about music, at least fashion design is. I only imagine a collection with a specific soundtrack, and sound in general. Music defines an allure and the tempo of fashion. It defines the idea of fashion tribes, hairstyles, style conventions, etc. Music shifts fashion for a long period of time, decades in fact. This is in fact what my book is really about. You’ve gone from creative director at Dior Homme to being a photographer for prestigious, glossy magazines. How do you explain the transition? I believe we are all doing the same thing – the specificity of a medium to be somehow irrelevant. This book is about the consistency of a visual language. When I shoot for a fashion magazine or a newspaper around the world, I still somehow pursue my ideas in fashion design. You revolutionised menswear at Dior Homme. How did you experience that period in your life? It was a very creative time. I was extremely committed to my time. I was surrounded by all the creative and emerging talents of the decade. I dressed them, collaborated with them and photographed them. I ended up designing the wardrobe of a generation and pushed a certain idea of men’s fashion, music related to fashion, the allure of this decade. I had no idea about the outcome. It was not about the outcome, but the energy of the moment. It was just my everyday life, my friends that ended up defining this style. Are there any designers you look up to? How about photographers or artists in general? I have some designers I love, some I’m friends with. I was close to Yves Saint Laurent, since I worked for him years ago. Yves Saint Laurent simply touched me. I’m really fond of Azzedine Alaïa, who is a true couturier in a modern definition, but also within the beautiful Parisian definition. Azzedine is a really key relevant designer in the evolution of fashion since the ’80s.

New York Mercedes distributor Max Hoffman, Daimler-Benz's official importer in the USA, suggested to DaimlerBenz AG management in Stuttgart that a street version of the 300SL would be a commercial success, especially in America. The racing W194 300SL was built around a tubular chassis to offset its relatively underpowered carbureted engine. First introduced at the 1954 New York Auto Show and produced for only four years, the amazing "Gullwing" is as shocking a sight to behold today as it was some six decades ago. Seeing this icon on the street was rare even in period, as Mercedes sold fewer than 1,500. Today, with values in the $800,000 range, Gullwings are more often than not ogled from afar or treated with care more befitting a Faberge egg than a 160-mile-per-hour sports car.

98

Designed by Daimler-Benz's chief developing engineer, Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the metal skeleton saved weight while still providing a high level of strength. Its unique architecture gave birth to the model's distinctive gull wing doors, as part of the chassis passed through what would be the lower half of a standard door. Even with the upward opening doors, the 300SL had an unusually high sill, making entry and exit from the car's cockpit problematic. A steering wheel with a tilt-away column was added to improve driver access. The 300SL's body was mainly steel, except for the aluminum hood, doors and trunk lid. It could also be ordered with an all-aluminium outer skin at tremendous added cost, saving 80 kg (176 lb). More than 80% of the vehicle's total production of approximately 1400 units were sold in the US, making the Gull wing the first Mercedes-Benz which sold in bulk outside its home market and confirming the validity of Hoffman's suggestion. The 300SL is credited for changing the company's image in America from a manufacturer of solid, but staid, automobiles to that of a producer of sporty cars.
