MAN’s

Want

WHAT A

MAN

WANTS By Hugo Norman

Style

Men’s fashion, according to Valentino isn’t complicated. But when it comes to pulling off a suit and making it look hot, it’s all about the details, the 70’s are back. Think two-piece suits with thinner ties that are fitted and tapered to the body. The trend now is for suits that have less fabric and fewer buttons. The idea here is that less is more. It’s more of a European look men are going for. “There’s a big movement toward healthy living now, and guys want to show that they look healthy,” Valentino said. “For that, the fitted, proportional suit is what they’re going for. It’s not about the loose, baggy clothing anymore.”If you’re looking for inspiration, the Al Capone look is hot this year, as men are dressing in suits reminiscent of mobsters, with polka-dot ties and sleek, slender looks. When pairing ties with a suit, Eloundou said thinking outside the box is definitely the way to go. It’s OK to mix paisley with polka dots, or wear a different colored jacket that contrasts with the pants, whether they’re solid or patterned. Accessories are a musthave, as they are used to bring out individual style, whether it’s the tie, shirt selection or pocket square. Eloundou’s tip: Be bold. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns. A pocket square doesn’t necessarily have to match the shirt. The contrast shows off your colorful style and individuality.

Sex& Relationships

Oh, the joys of sex and relationships. Some men know what they want from awoman, while others are still trying to discover their boundaries. After surveying agroup of young men, we found out that men like their lady to be a lady on thestreet as well as in the bedroom, while some men prefer a lady in the streets and an uninhibited sex vixen behind closed doors. Physical Attraction The face is always a given when you meet someone, but this year it’s all about a woman’s height and the “ass.” Of course, attraction varies from person to person, but tall women with perfectly shaped derrières out numbered the face and boobs when it comes to physical attraction. Who knew? Relationship Needs Men want self-sufficient, secure and confident women. But just because you’reconfident doesn’t mean you need to be conservative. Men want a woman who knows what she wants and knows how to have a good time. If a guy is givingyou all of his time and attention, then there’s no need for jealousy. Yep, most men vow to cut the cord when a woman is considered to be the “jealous type.” Sexual Wants Nipples, nipples, nipples. Not yours, ladies, the men are all about foreplay, and it’s all about taking care of his nipples. Sucking, licking and even biting on a man’s nipples is a sure-fire way to relax and arouse him. But you don’t have to wait until you’re having sex to play with his nipples. Give his nipples a quick tug after he’s been working out, in the shower or first thing in the morning, and watch his facelight up as if his favorite sports team has just won a game.

A MAN’S DRINK

The Manhattan. Men have been opting for the Manhattan since 1870. History suggests that the drink originated at the Manhattan Club in New York City in the early 1870s. It was invented by Dr. Iain Marshall for a banquet hosted by Jennie Jerome (also known as Lady Randolph Churchill, Winston Churchill's mother) in honor of the presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden. The Manhattan is a popular and classic whiskey and sweet vermouth cocktail. When properly built, the Manhattan is the only cocktail that can slug it out toe-to-toe with the martini. It's bold and fortifying, yet as relaxing as a deep massage, and gents can’t seem to get enough of them. Combine the vermouth, bourbon whiskey, and bitters with 2 - 3 ice cubes in a mixing glass. Stir gently, don't bruise the spirits and cloud the drink. Place the cherry in a chilled cocktail glass and strain the whiskey mixture over the cherry. Rub the cut edge of the orange peel over the rim of the glass and twist it over the drink to release the oils but don't drop it in. 3/4 oz sweet vermouth 2 1/2 oz bourbon whiskey 1 dash Angostura® bitters 1 maraschino cherry 1 twist orange peel GentlemensGuideOC.com 7

Cool-Weather Styling: Winter 2017 Fashion Trends By Bonnie Wong

ith winter comes cooler months, brisk walks in the park, and…winter fashion! Whether you think you’ve seen it all or are a complete beginner to dressing for this season, we have some special trend reports just for you. In preparation for your new wardrobe, the editors of Gentlemen’s Guide have compiled a comprehensive style guide for the fashionable Gent!

W

12 GentlemensGuideOC.com

Another trend for this winter is the laidback, “weekend ease” look that is still well composed. Sporty pieces mixed with cuffed sweats, a topcoat, and a solid piece of outerwear finishes off the look. Along with the oversized suit trend is the oversized coat, which creates the same effect while keeping you warm. Fully functional yet still polished; this look makes you look as if you aren’t overdoing it but still fashion-forward.

Loose and Sporty Looks

A recent look has shifted from stuffy suit-focused attire to lesser pieces that still look put-together. The secret? Tailoring. Straight off the runway, the pieces are now baggier and less slimming. The baggy look creates a whole new silhouette that frames your body in a unique, yet flattering way. The result? A dressier version of the straight suit that exudes fashion. If you’re still on the fence with this look, opt for a looser fit that still has structure and pair it with your choice of shoes. In addition, ties are becoming less prominent and dress shoes have been replaced with street wear sneakers. The great thing about this design is that it can be dressed up or down depending on your preference and the occasion. GentlemensGuideOC.com 13

Prints, Patterns, and Palettes Floral prints (yes, even for winter!), fur, velvet, and leather are popular patterns and texture this season. Although they might come off as a bit extreme for a day-to-day wardrobe, the secret is to incorporate a small piece into the entire look. This detail—whether it is in a scarf or hat—will completely pull the look together while drawing attention to the small details of your outfit.

Trend reports straight off the runways have labeled this winter’s top color palette to consist of burgundy, rusty red, brown, and dark emerald. A warm, comforting burgundy rings in the spirit of winter while rusty reds and browns give a remarkable sense of style. Dark emerald and other deep tones are also known for adding pops of color to any cold-weather outfit.

14 GentlemensGuideOC.com

Accessories to Complete Your Look As a Gent, you might dread styling accessories. While all the options might seem confusing, choosing for winter 2017 is actually not as hard as you might think! One trend is the structured satchel or “man bag.” If you’re tired of carrying the same, boring briefcase around, this perfect alternative is a fashionable way of holding all your belongings that doubles as a stylish accessory. Whether you’re heading to the office or going through airport security, a structured bag in a neutral print (perhaps even one of the colors we mentioned above) amps up your style further.

We all know that the colder months require more layers to keep warm. Don’t forget your hat and scarf as well! Protect yourself while looking great with a driving hat (also known as an Ivy cap or golf cap). These hats are flat and rounded around the edges with a short brim in the front. Scarves are also making their popular comeback this season. This year, the longer scarf is in high demand whether worn as an accent print or a solid staple. A favored companion with any outfit, a scarf adds a refined look no matter how you choose to wear it: around your neck, peeking from under a layered shirt, or even cowboy style. This winter, make sure that you’re well prepped for the harsh winds and cooling seasons. Whether you’re heading an important meeting at the office or going on a casual date during the day, don’t forget these style tips and tricks that will have heads turning! n

Buy Your Cigars With Ease at

Prado House Cigar Company By Bonnie Wong/Michelle Lin

ith fast-paced lifestyles nowadays, we understand that buying a great quality cigar can be hard sometimes with limited supply and little time to find one. But fear no more. Prado House Cigar Company is here to help with “Order to Go” cigar buying convenience. Through their website and online store at pradohousecigarco.com, Prado House Cigar Co. delivers a wide assortment of high quality, low priced cigars throughout California, offering free shipping on all cigar orders of $25 or more for both the cigar aficionado and the general public.

W

The History Behind the Cigar

Cigars have been man’s favorite treat since early 20th century. Since then, media such as the movie industry began depicting men smoking cigars. Eventually, cigar smoking became an art associated with masculinity and wealth. Cuba was once the biggest exporter of cigars. However, the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 impeded the export of tobacco between the U.S. and Cuba. President John F. Kennedy approved a trade embargo with Cuba in 1962, which prohibits Americans from purchasing Cuban cigars. Now, 54 years after the trade embargo went into effect, President Obama alleviated the blockage of Cuban goods on March 15, 2016. Americans are now onceagain allowed to travel to Cuba and return to the U.S. with Cuban cigars. 18 GentlemensGuideOC.com

The Story of Prado House Cigar Co.

Prado House Cigar Co. is a family owned and operated online business, based in Whittier, CA. With the slogan, “Smoke’em if you Got’em!” Prado House Cigar Co., caters to both the newbie and experienced smokers. Unlike other companies, Prado House Cigar Co. offers a great and convenient way known as “Order to Go” for customers. It’s like having access to your cigars 24/7 with ease! You will never have to run out to get your best cigars — rather, have your favorite cigars come to you! Owner Frank Prado, experienced smoker of fifteen years, struggled with buying cigars. If the boxes he purchased from big retailers back East ran out, he was forced to go to a liquor store and pay top dollar for a cigar he was unsatisfied with. Thus, alongside his son Matthew Prado, he pitched the idea of a convenient, cigar delivery service. That is how his business, Prado House Cigar Co. came to be and it aims at delivering a wide assortment of low-priced cigars, shipped to customers with no hassle.

GentlemensGuideOC.com 19

Prado believes the process can be “intimidating” for new smokers or those who want to take up the hobby. That is why each cigar comes in a re-sealable bag with a cutter and matches, which can be stored for a few weeks. Instead of paying top dollar for a lesser quality product, cigar enthusiasts can choose from a large selection of reasonably priced, high quality cigars, and receive their orders quickly. It is apparent that his passion for the trade is reflected by his business. “For me it’s not about selling the cigar — it’s about enjoying the cigar,” Prado says.

Why We Recommend It

The website is easy to navigate, with an equally superb level of service for all customers wanting to indulge in this favorite pastime. Every year the Prado Cigar House Co. continues to grow. “It’s a convenient and expedient way of getting your cigars,” says Los Angeles resident and Marketing Manager, Jeff Davis. Mr. Davis believes “the service part is great.” Prado Cigar House Co. can even assist with custom-tailored “cigar” parties so your guests can taste different brands of cigars. Frank Prado says these events are similar to the concept of wine tasting, with a similar method for everyone to taste, sample and evaluate some of the best cigars.

20 GentlemensGuideOC.com

After smoking a variety of cigars at Prado Cigar House Co’s cigar events, guests are left in awe and are almost immediately hooked. It is a fun, exciting process that gives attendees every dimension of the cigar from combustion and complexity to structure and resonance of the cigar.

Tips For Newbie Prado House Cigar Smokers

What is his advice to new smokers? “Do not purchase cigars based on price. Instead, explore different options and read the descriptions. Start with something on the mild side because that’s usually what most people like,” he says. Personally, he enjoys mild and medium cigars as well as a few full-flavored ones on occasion, which complement and pair well. To guide customers, Prado House Cigar Co.’s monthly blog “The Lounge” discusses cigar basics, proper cigar etiquette, new cigar products, accessories, etc. It can be found on their website. You can browse the website effortlessly, they list the different products offered along with a detailed description of each cigar to ensure that your perfect one is easily accessible. In addition, the company offers 24-hour delivery service anywhere within a 10-mile radius of the city of Whittier, CA. In translation, that means you will be able to receive your cigar order today! As for those of you who live farther away, unfortunately for you, the wait might be just a little bit longer. In addition, as stated before there will be free shipping on cigar orders of $25.00 or more within California. While styles range from subtle to bold, all of their cigars consistently show excellence in their own unique way, and every last one is worth a smoke — so gents go online and get smoking today! The Los Angeles Angels’ Of Anaheim: Season 2016’s Outlook By Bonnie Wong

40 GentlemensGuideOC.com

W

ith four baseball games kicking off the famous Freeway Series, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will face off against the Los Angeles Dodgers, one of the biggest and best-known rivalries in Los Angeles. This series of games are played on May 16-19 and is a Major League Baseball (MLB) interleague rivalry from the American League West division (Angels) and National League West division (Dodgers). The naming of this series was from the large freeway system that sprung in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, housing both teams simultaneously.

Freeway Series and the Angels

Albert Pujols and Mike Trout led the first game, which was held on May 16 at Dodger Stadium. The Angels beat the Dodgers 7-6 for their fourth straight win in the opener of the Freeway Series. The first actual exhibition game between the two clubs was played in 1962 in Palm Springs. The first pre-season series was played at Dodger Stadium when the Dodger Stadium was both teams’ home ballpark. At one point in time, both teams

were owned by major media conglomerates, the Angels being owned by the Walt Disney Company but were sold in recent years. During the 2002 World Series, a period of peace throughout the rivalry as a result of the nightmares fans and players were facing because of the Angels playing the San Francisco Giants, an in-state rival of the Dodgers. Matt Shoemaker (2-5) allowed for three runs and six hits in five innings, striking out five and walking in two. Since April 13, this athlete has made it past four innings in the ninth for his second age. Fernando Salas retired the side on 11 pitches in the ninth for his second save, which officially ended the game lasting four hours. Pujols singled in two runs into the seventh, which extended the Angels’ lead to 603 total. Reliever Pedro Baez allowed three runs and four hits, which includes a sacrifice by Johnny Giavotelala. Pujols went 3 for 4 with three RBIs. With four home runs, 15 RBls, seven strikeouts and four home runs, Trout is on a tear away from home. With a least-promising start, Shoemaker still seems as if he is going downhill in GentlemensGuideOC.com 41

terms of performance. He has pitched only 9.1 innings in his last 3 starts, giving up 18 runs. Although his performance has not been up to par, he may be able to pull off a smoother start against the Dodgers. At the second game on May 17, Jered Weaver vs. Clayton Kershaw may pose a sordid problem. It is said that Weaver is getting older and was less likely to perform at his prime at the game, although he does boast a 1.53 career ERA. On the other hand, Kershaw has been scoring

42 GentlemensGuideOC.com

high figures, which may be an intimidation to Angel hitters. At the end of the day, though, the game was less eventful than hoped for. Trout striked out 3 times and hit a .250 over the past two seasons. Although it was expected that the Dodgers win this easily, the score ended up at a 76, with the Angels in the lead.

Trading Trout?

With the next two games coming up, it is impossible to say who will win for sure. It is a known fact that the Angels have been

struggling for a while and the Freeway Series isn’t a new novelty anymore. One of the main rumors surfacing is the possibility of trading superstar center fielder Mike Trout. Many are saying to trade Trout if it ensures success in winning in the future and to rebuild the Angels as a whole. It is said that trading him would fill holes in the major-league roster by fielding a competitive team in the short run but also working on the minors for years to come. Still, many are questioning whether trading him is worth it. Many believe he is one of the

Angels’ greatest players. However, they believe and say that the franchise will need to surround him with free agents while simultaneously building back up their prospect base. Fans are torn—is trading Trout worth it for the Angels? Although the outlook of the Angels might not seem promising, there is still hope for the Angels themselves in the future, even if it means trading Mike Trout to benefit the team as a whole. n

Maxwell:

A Self-Made Founder of Neo Soul Artistry By Bonnie Wong

redited with shaping the “neo soul” movement, Gerald Maxwell Rivera is known as an American singersongwriter, record producer, and actor. Better known by his stage name “Maxwell,” he became popular from his R&B music, garnering inspiration from famous artists Prince, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder.

C

Early Beginnings

Born to a Haitian mother and Puerto Rican father in Brooklyn, New York on May 23, 1973, Maxwell grew up a devout Baptist. His religious faith only deepened with the 46 GentlemensGuideOC.com

loss of his father to a plane crash when Maxwell was only three years old. He only started to compose material at the ripe age of 17 after receiving a small Casio keyboard from a friend. At the time, he was a fan of “jheri curl soul” and taught himself how to play a variety of different instruments. He had experience singing in his church choir and worked diligently to foster his love for music. Although his classmates made fun of him, he continued to develop his musical talent and changed his style to reflect a Bohemian look. By 1991 at the age of 18, he began performing for clubs in New York and gained access to a 24-track recording studio. There he recorded a demo tape, which he distributed amongst his friends. Within the next two years, Maxwell continued performing for the club scene and wrote and recorded over 300 songs, further gaining considerable reputation. A magazine writer who attended one of Maxwell’s shows described him as “the next Prince”. In 1994, Maxwell signed a recording contract with Columbia Records and adopted his middle name as his stage name to protect his family’s privacy. His first debut album was a collaboration with songwriter Leon Ware and guitarist Wah Wah Watson to produce “Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite” in multiple studios throughout New York and in Chicago, Illinois. The album was finished in 1995 and was presented to Columbia Records the

GentlemensGuideOC.com 47

same year, but due to issues with the management, was shelved for almost a year. At first, the album gained little commercial interest. On April 20, 1996 the album hit number 38 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. However, only four months later it began to skyrocket and eventually peaked at number eight by October 1996, spending seventy-eight weeks on the Billboard 200 chart and hitting the Top 30 in the United Kingdom. Time, Rolling Stones, and USA Today rated the album as one of the year’s top-10 best albums. It was also nominated for Best R&B Album at the 39th Grammy Awards. Four singles of his album included “…Til the Cops Come Knockin,” “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder),” “Sumthin’ Sumthin,” and “Suitelady (The Proposal Jam)” all gained chart names for themselves.

An Artist on the Rise

Although he had only released one album at the time, he was asked to tape an episode of the concert series MTV Unplugged. In 1998, he released his second album “Embrya” but was attacked by contemporary music critics, who criticized its more “indulgent sound” and said it was “unfocused” and “pretentious” among other

things. Still, Maxwell believed he did not regret risking his reputation with this record. It won the Soul Train Music Award for Best Male Soul/R&B Album and sold more than one million copies. It even led to an alternative fan base for him. The next year it was officially certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. The same year he released his single “Fortunate,” written by R. Kelly and reached number one on Billboard magazine’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles and Tracks chart—his most successful single. His third album “Now” was released on August 14, 2001, which sold over 296,000 units within the first week. Unlike his second album, which received major backlash, this album generally received positive reviews from music critics. After this album was released, Maxwell went on a seven-year hiatus with no planned tour.

A Return to the Limelight

Years later he began recording sessions for a new album produced entirely by himself and musician Hod David from 2007-2009. His first performance since his hiatus was as a surprise musical guest at the 2008 BET 48 GentlemensGuideOC.com

Awards. The album “BLACKsummers’night” was released July 7, 2009 and debuted as number one on the US Billboard 200 selling 316,000 copies in the first week with four singles “Pretty Wings,” “Bad Habits,” “Cold,” and “Fistful of Tears.” On April 17, 2012, he announced that he would embark on a sixday tour. He was to debut never-performed songs from his “BLACKsummers’night” trilogy, but the tour was canceled due to vocal hemorrhaging. After two years, he disclosed that he was working on his fifth studio album for three years already. He released his first solo single in 6 years called “Lake by the Ocean,” and revealed his fifth album then too. He performed it on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on May 5, 2016. Perhaps most notably, Maxwell as an artist is known for the “new soul revival” in music and that his style has been attributed to music with feeling, hope, meaning, and contemporary black music. At the time, his role in writing and producing his albums demonstrated his powerful handling of artistic control as an R&B artist, something virtually impossible at the time. n GentlemensGuideOC.com 49

Cars

Gentlemen’s Guide (GG) Tips to consider when scoring a ride!

Guys, Buying That Car at a Great Price

From Your Local Dealership! By Scott Olson

s somebody who makes a living running a profitable car business, I argue it's not always a good idea to grind car dealers into a bare-minimum, below-invoice price on your next new car. (Yes, I know most of you disagree.) With that said, I've seen every type of negotiator walk through my showroom doors over the last 15 years. I know what it takes for someone to walk out with a smoking deal — to get the best deal on a new car possible.

A

GG wants to share with you some insight and tips on what really works: from researching to financing to sending one simple email that will get dealers scrambling to give you their best price.

How To Research The Best New Car Deal

It starts with research. You can't walk into a dealership with the Kelly Blue Book app on your phone and expect to have everything you need to get a deal. Savvy buyers do most of the legwork from the comfort of their couch before setting foot in a store. You want to settle on the specific make and model car you want to buy before negotiating price. Don't skip this part! Buying the right car is as important—if not more important— than the deal you get. You have to live with the car for the next several years. Buy the wrong car and you'll forget about "what a deal you got" as you sputter joylessly around a curve or — worse — wait for the tow truck on a cold winter night. Visit a few showrooms for vehi50 GentlemensGuideOC.com

cle presentations and test drives. Be very clear to the sales consultant that you are just test-driving and are still considering several models. A good salesperson will still try his or her best to sell you then and there, but chances are you'll get a half-assed presentation and no bothersome follow-up calls. If you do get a call, you can politely dismiss it saying you've decided to go a different direction. Once you've decided on the car you want, begin comparing apples-to-apples pricing at different dealerships. Do more research. Find the dealers that sell this model. Visit their websites. Research online reviews of these dealers on sites like Google, Yelp, and Dealerrater so you know what to expect from each dealer when it comes time to negotiate. Next, head over to the manufacturer's website. Take in the info on any specials, rebates, and financing incentives. Lastly, jump onto a third-party consumer websites like edmunds.com or TrueCar.com to gather their pricing information.

Understanding The New Car Market Conditions

Now that you have a ballpark figure for what you should pay for your car, it's time to factor in the current market. Dealers have expensive software and auction results that provide upto-date market data, but consumers will have to take a more manual approach. Your goal is to determine the level of demand for the model car you want to buy. Drive onto the lot of your local Chevrolet or Toyota dealer and glance over the inventory. You'll see larger volumes of Silverados and Malibus compared to Corvettes. There will be more

GentlemensGuideOC.com 51

Camrys and Rav-4s than Land Cruisers. You'll see the bread-and-butter cars with over twenty in stock as well as the lower demand and lower supply models. Your goal is to figure out how eager the dealer is to move the particular car you want. If a certain model is selling fast, a dealer has little incentive to negotiate. If not, the dealers may be eager to do whatever it takes to get the car off the lot.

Getting The Best New Car Financing

It's a myth that you have to go to your local bank or credit union to get the lowest interest rates. Dealers send multiple "deals" to a variety of lenders everyday and they have a lot of flexibility around who gets approved and for what rate. Before you get all nervous that a dealer will try to give you a higher APR than you could get elsewhere, remember: A dealer's main purpose is to sell you a car. Making a profit on the financing is "plus business." The dealer would rather offer you financing at the "buy rate" and earn a "flat." The "buy rate" is the percentage the dealer pays for the money and a "flat" is the flat fee paid to the dealer if the money is lent with little or no markup. If you come prepared with the rates local banks are offering, you can usually leverage an even better financing deal at the dealership. The key is to know your credit score and what tier that puts you in. Be honest about what sort of rates you have found and qualify for elsewhere because the dealer can call your bluff—they have a little book with competing lenders' rates! n

Diet and Exercise for a Healthy Lifestyle By Bonnie Wong

E

veryone knows that saying “you are what you eat,” and that’s definitely true regardless of age, gender, or current health. It might be easy just to grab a greasy hamburger or reach for a bag of processed chips if you don’t see the immediate dangers such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, liver disease…the list goes on. That’s not the only important factor, however. You can’t just eat healthy but live a sedentary lifestyle because exercise is vital too. Both exercise and healthy eating go hand-in-hand to helping you feel and look your best.

Healthy Eating, Healthy Weight

Looking to achieve a healthy weight? A healthy eating plan is what you’re looking for. Healthy eating emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products. Lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts are also must-haves. Stay clear from saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt and sodium, added sugars, and more. Fruits are a delicious way to get natural sugar. If the fruits of your choice aren’t in season, frozen, canned, or dried works well too. Just steer clear of canned fruits containing added sugars or syrups. Look for fruit packed in water or their own juice. Vegetables are also a healthy option that can taste great and be cooked in many different ways. Try panfrying your favorite vegetables or microwave frozen or canned vegetables if you’re in a rush. To get your daily intake of calcium, low-fat and fat-free yogurts without any added sugar can provide a healthy and tasty snack. Just like too much of a good thing isn’t beneficial, too much food isn’t helpful for your body either. This is where portion control comes in. Limiting portions helps you lose weight, prevent complications, and gauge calories and carbohydrates. The first important step is to never skip meals: eat three well-balanced meals a day and one snack. The trick is to never go more than five hours without eating otherwise you’ll be tempted to consume more the next meal. Next, start measuring your food. A handy rule of thumb is that 3 ounces of lean meat is equivalent to the size of a deck of cards. 1 cup of breakfast cereal is the size of a fist. Become in tune with reading nutrition labels, which list the serving size if you’re counting calories.

Exercise Your Way to Your Ideal Body Weight Being slim and strong isn’t just a far-off dream anymore! Exercising might seem like a pain, but if incorporated into your daily routine will only help strengthen you. The first step is to develop a workout plan that focuses on your areas of improvement. The Internet, library books, fitness magazines, and personal trainers are all indispensable resources for you to gain more information on the topic. After you develop your day-to-day plan, be sure to stick with it. Having motivation to achieve your goals is one of the most important factors in both healthful eating and exercising. There are many ways to increase your physical activity. The first is to make it fun. If you dread going to the gym to run on a treadmill, try going on a hike, walking with your friends, or taking a dancing class that will excite you. Another important tip is to keep track of your progress in a calendar to remind and motivate you on a day-to-day basis. Also, work activity into your day even if this means walking up and down the stairs or taking a 15-minute walk before your lunch. Choose to follow a 3-day-a-week workout habit in either a gym or at home. Rest at least once a day after each session to give muscles time to grow and recover. Mix it up by rotating your exercise schedule and alternating. Whether you’re looking for sculpted abs or just a light routine to leave you happy and healthy, coupling good eating with physical activity will help you look and feel your best. Keep these tips in mind and remember to stick to your goals! n

One Click Away from Love: Dating in the Digital Age By Bonnie Wong

n this new digital era, navigating relationships via the Internet can be rewarding. With tons of dating websites, online apps, and an instant way to communicate, making a connection might be just a click away. The downside, though, is that being behind a cell phone or computer screen isn’t the same as face-to-face meeting and a pixel-picture only says so much. Still, online dating makes connecting and communicating almost instantaneously accessible. The process is simple: enter some of your basic information and a website or app will find suitable matches for you. Then, from there, you regulate your own

Do’s and Don’ts for Your Profile

The first thing a woman will see is your picture. That will also be one of the most important things for a woman to determine attractiveness. With this in mind, take pictures that show you. Full body, outdoor shots in high quality and natural lighting work best. People don’t want to have to work to pick you out of a crowd of your friends so stick to photos of only yourself. Have someone else take the picture of you because it’s been proven that women don’t view profiles that are selfies as much, and definitely don’t opt for a “bathroom mirror” picture either. Lastly, don’t forget to smile!

Do talking and can potentially set up a real date. In essence, you’re trying to “sell” yourself as an individual while shopping around for other potential people. Sounds complicated? It might not be. Gentlemen’s Guide is here to the rescue to pull you out of your relationship slump and use the newest tech to your advantage!

Since you are “selling” yourself to a potential significant other, you want your online dating profile and bio to reflect you as accurately as possible. That being said, stick to the truth at all times. Instead of creating a person that you think a woman would want, be you. Being genuine is important in a committed, healthy relationship and lying will only make it harder in the long run. Besides, what are you going to do when you snag a date and show up as a person different than what your date has expected?

Don’t

GentlemensGuideOC.com 83

Instead of creating a person that you think a woman would want, be you. Being genuine is important in a committed, healthy relationship and lying will only make it harder in the long run.

--≠≠-----Another important precedent is to choose a mature profile screen name. Anything cocky, rude, or inappropriate sends off warning bells in a potential woman that will turn her away. Try incorporating something relating to your hobbies or personality. On the same subject, making your bio clever is another vital step to “selling” yourself. Avoid cliché statements and highlight your best qualities and interests. That way, a person who is scrolling through can get an idea of who you are.

Online Messaging

As a rule of thumb, only message a person if you’re willing to set up a date within 7 days. No woman will want to wait around for long periods of time for someone they’ve just met over the internet, so don’t miss any opportunity. Secondly, this shouldn’t even 84 GentlemensGuideOC.com

need to be said, but stay away from saying anything predatory or inappropriate. Women looking for a serious, committed

relationship will most likely not appreciate any sexual remarks, vulgarity, or blatant criticism of their appearance or yours. Start off with something on that they’ve stated on their personal profile, and avoid controversial topics. Another guideline is to cut the immaturity. Don’t start off with a cheesy pickup line that will make you look dumb. If it progresses into a more serious relationship, humor in the form of a joke or pun might be funny in the future, but don’t introduce yourself in that manner. Be confident in who you are. Don’t try to justify your reasons for online dating. An insecure bio will make you look just that—insecure. Exude the genuine person you are, and don’t second-guess yourself. Lastly, generic messages are a turn off. Some women may be receiving the same messages over and over again that say nothing about them or

about you. Instead, try picking something from her bio to form a connection and show that you’re not just anybody looking for a date. Be original, creative, and fun! With the Internet as a valuable resource, meeting people has never been easier. With these tips from Gentlemen’s Guide, scoring the perfect date is easy, efficient, and more convenient than ever! n
