Over the last 40 years of using Genus ABS proven beef sires, we have seen huge success in the quality of the calves produced, resulting in higher prices when sold to the retail scheme. Over the last 18 months of using Genus ABS sires, we have been able to accelerate profitability through faster growth rates. We started using more beef to reduce the number of Friesian bulls born and as a result, our beef calves are achieving great prices in the market. For our business, the Fertility Plus British Blue provides us with calves that are born easily and of high calf quality. The quality we are seeing from the calves continues to increase and we are experiencing a very low mortality rate.

Genus ABS Beef Calving Survey To continue to provide reliable proven beef sires to our valued dairy customers, we gather significant Real World DataTM sets using using our Genus ABS Beef Calving Survey to identify elite beef sires for use on dairy cows. Over the last 40 years, only 35% of beef sires have become proven from the hundreds of beef sires tested. By rejecting bulls that don’t make the grade, Genus ABS take pride in having the world’s best beef on dairy programme. Using breed EBV data, we are able to identify young beef bulls that have the potential to transmit desirable traits. However, this is based on pedigree breeding data and is often predicted from small data sets, therefore EBV’s alone are not accurate enough in cross breeding.

The formulation of the index includes extensive Real World DataTM including over 100,000 Genus ABS Beef Calving Survey data sets, industry standard figures and sales prices from external stakeholders. This data collected over the past 40 years provides the essential foundation for our index to provide a reliable total financial benefit. ANGUS GROWTH RATES Using data collected through ABP and Blade, we are now able to calculate average Daily Liveweight Gain (DLWG) in kilograms per day for calves with a named sire. From this data, we can compare Genus ABS Angus sires with competitor sires and identify those with the highest performing progeny. The graph opposite ranks sires for DLWG of progeny from dairy cows and is based on a data set of over 900 Angus sires with more than 13,000 observations in total. As you can see, our sires PROTÉGÉ, ERIC and DIMENSION rank at the top of this graph with the leader being PROTÉGÉ at 1.08 kg per day compared to the average of 0.91 kg per day.

New BeefConnect® Genetic Premium Available Through BeefConnect® we have been able to demonstrate the value of beef genetics in the supply chain and are now able to offer a bonus to members of the group in the form of a new calf genetic premium. Through the data collected from calves that have been sold through the scheme with a registered sire ID, we are now starting to identify the genetics that deliver increased growth, daily liveweight gain and improved profit. By categorising our Angus sires based on the performance of their progeny, they now fall into three different bands offering either a £30, £20 or £10 premium to the farmer when the calf is sold through BeefConnect®. Farmers will be paid the premium if the calves meet the specification, the correct sire details are printed on the passport. The premium bands will be updated every six months.
