George Green’s School

Principal’s Welcome I have now been in post for a full half term and what an amazing half term it has been! I want to share with you some of the experiences and thoughts about my first eight weeks in George Green’s School. The most exciting aspect by far has been getting to know the staff, governors, pupils and parents. It is quite a feat to learn about 1200 pupils and over 200 staff not to mention parents and governors too! Whilst I still dont know everyone’s name, what I can say is that I am truly impressed by all four groups in equal measure.

Mrs Bowman’s GCSE Sociology class are in The Advertiser for raising money for the foodbank - well done! http://www.eastlondonadvertiser.co.uk/news/george_green_s_pupils_raise_ cash_for_foodbanks_1_2904320

The pupils have made me feel truly welcome. Not only that, many of them have demonstrated what fantastic young citizens they are and both staff and parents should be very proud of them. The Year 10 girls who raised £900 for a local food bank by organising a non-uniform day in school sticks in my mind as a wonderful example of what young people can achieve when they set their minds to it. However, there are many other examples: the campaigns organised on Community Day, the great reports we receive from employers when our young people go on work experience and the many small acts of kindness and respect I witness on a daily basis make me so proud of them all. George Green’s is blessed to have a truly committed staff and governors. The teachers, support staff and governors work tirelessly for our young people. Working in a school can be challenging at times but the staff never seem to tire or lose the enthusiasm that ensures they go far more than the extra mile to support the pupil in their learning. Apart from the big events like Community Day and this evening’s Prize Giving which take a lot of organising and celebrate the efforts of our pupils, there are the small every day acts of support such as the Head of Year who replaced a lost Oyster Card for a pupil or the teachers who stay behind after school to explain the work to pupils. There is such a great family atmosphere. Then, of course, there are the parents/carers. Many of you have taken the trouble to introduce yourselves to me and ask me about my plans for the school. You have expressed support for the school which is invaluable; you have attended the Parent Forum, literacy afternoons, coffee mornings and come to Review Day. I am indeed very grateful for such a fantastic parent body. The close links between parents/carers and school are critical for the success of your sons and daughters so please do contact school if have a problem or a question, you will always be made to feel welcome and valued. Charlotte, the Parent Support Partner, is employed make this as easy as possible. Thank you everyone for making me feel welcome. I am confident that, with and because of your support, the school will go from strength. We are well on the way to Outstanding.
