Hike More Worry Less

Hike More, Worry Less

One of the best things about living in Knoxville is being so close to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Entrance into the Smokies is free unlike most other national parks in the United States. I have hiked hundreds of miles through the park and have a few favorite trails that I return to often. One of these favorites is Charlies Bunion. The trailhead for Charlie’s Bunion is located in the parking lot for Newfound Gap, a very popular overlook itself. You know it is going to be a great hike when the views are stunning before you even begin! Charlie’s Bunion is an 8 mile hike round trip. It is a somewhat strenuous hike, gaining a total of 1640 feet in elevation from start to finish. But I promise the views along the way and at the end are worth it! The overlook is nothing short of spectacular and it is here you will see the famous “bunion” rock that gives the trial its name. If you are feeling extra adventurous, I would suggest hiking to be at the summit for sunrise. As a photographer I am always chasing that magical morning light and this is one of my favorite places to take in sunrise. It is truly something to be on top of a mountain, surrounded in silence, watching the world wake up. It is an experience I think everyone should have at least once in their lifetime. So, next time you venture into the Smokies, check out Charlie’s Bunion- you will not be disappointed!
