Once again it is my pleasure to welcome you all to our St George’s Day celebrations here in March. These events don’t ‘just happen’ and behind the scenes there have been a host of volunteer helpers. These individuals don’t just start work the week before – many of them have been working together for the past year to ensure the success of today. On behalf of the town I thank them for giving so much time to keep this event firmly secured in the calendar. We are also indeed fortunate to be part of a community that enjoys getting together to celebrate all manner of occasions and the increasing numbers that now support our St George’s Sunday reflects that enthusiasm. We also welcome to our town today many dozens of traders and family enterprises but a special mention must go to the resilient and entrepreneurial spirit of our many shops, cafes, pubs and businesses that open all year round and have offered their support to this event. I am coming to the end of my term as a Mayor and I would like to thank the many hundreds of people who have welcomed me to their functions, have supported such occasions as the Christmas carol service, and who have donated generously to the Mayor’s 2015/16 appeal to provide defibrillators in so many places in March. It has been an enriching and enjoyable term as Mayor and a privilege to have been able to serve this wonderful community.

March St Georges Fayre is one

of four ‘Four Seasons’ events, which take place in Fenland’s market towns throughout the year. The Fayre is delivered by Fenland District Council and a committee of volunteers; it is also supported by March Town Council. Many individuals and organisations within the town have contributed to the successful planning of the event including; March Society, St Peters Church, The Rotary Club, March Scouts, Georges, and many more. We would like to thank everyone involved in the Fayre, your support has been invaluable. If you enjoy the event and would like to contribute in some way, be it through sponsorship or even volunteering please contact: marketsandevents@fenland.gov.uk

The Parade - The celebrations will begin

3

at 10:15am with a parade in the theme of the Queen’s 90th Birthday. Starting at the top of Broad Street leading into the market place for the official opening by the Mayor. St George’s Dragon will be leading the parade with his usual mischievous streak. Why not have your photograph taken with him during the day and enter into the photographic competition to be in with a chance of winning a prize.

MARCH QUALITY MEATS

Take part in our St George’s Shield making competition for your chance to win a great prize or join us for a Dragon Hunt! The medieval legend of St George and the dragon is over a thousand years old. The tale explains that St George, a knight from the Crusades saved a beautiful princess from a dragon, protecting himself with the sign of the cross on his invaluable shield. March Podiatry Practice is challenging children age 11 and under to take part by making their very own St George’s Shield. This can be made from any materials, but must be no taller than 1 metre. The first prize is a £50 gift voucher from Toys R Us. To enter the competition, please bring your Shields to March Podiatry Practice, (next to Iceland store) between 9am on Monday 18th April and 4pm on Friday 22nd April. The judging of this competition will be on the market place stage from 10:30am before the fancy dress competition also taking place during the Fayre, so you may also use your shield for the fancy dress event. For more details, contact March Podiatry Practice on 01354 651200

DID YOU KNOW. . . ? St George’s was actually from Syria Palaestina which is now known as Palestine he was called Georgios meaning ‘worker of the land’. Despite being in the Roman Army St George was ordered to torture and death by the Roman’s for refusing to renounce his Christianity. Saint George and the Dragon was a legend brought back with the Crusaders over 1,000 years ago. By the 14th century, George had been declared both the patron saint and the protector of the royal family ousting St Edmund who was the patron saint before him. Richard the Lion Heart used St George’s Flag on the tunic of soldiers to avoid confusion in battle. It is customary on St George’s day to wear a red rose in one’s lapel and to sing the hymn “Jerusalem” St. George frequently appears in Mummers’ Plays, which have been performed in Britain for hundreds of years. Keep your eye out for March Mummers who will be performing throughout the Fayre.

UP POMPEII! Ben Jolley ben.jolley@archant.co.uk

One of the biggest ever Bronze Age archaeological discoveries in Britain and Europe was unearthed this week amidst a £1.1 million four-year excavation in Whittlesey.

GiBBS

The ‘Bronze Age Pompeii’ - consisting of 3,000-year-old wooden roundhouses and their contents which burnt down during a fire and plunged into a river – is continuing to shock scientists because of how well-preserved the remains are. Rare small cups, bowls and jars complete with past meals still inside and finely woven clothing are among the

items found in pristine condition. Some will be displayed in Peterborough City Museum, while others will be researched in laboratories. The site at Must Farm quarry is described by Duncan Wilson, Historic England’s chief executive as “a frozen moment in time”, one that “really will transform our understanding of the
