March St George’s Fayre

March St George’s Fayre is one of four ‘Four Seasons’ events which take place in Fenland’s market towns throughout the year. The Fayre is delivered by Fenland District Council and a committee of volunteers; it is also supported by March Town Council. We are very proud that the Fayre provides an opportunity to the people of March to showcase their talent, be it through playing an instrument, singing or maybe even selling homemade crafts. We hope that you will join us in showing your support for all of the incredibly gifted participants and the local businesses who open their doors to welcome the event by visiting the town centre throughout the day. We are also very privileged to have a committee of committed volunteers who have worked tirelessly to put together a programme of entertainment that promises to make this the best event yet. Special thanks go to Mike Chapman of Markets and Events Ltd, Cllr Jan French, Jennifer Lawler of March Society, Nigel Marsh of Georges, Lisa Moore, Gavin Philpott of March Scouts, Cllr Robert Skoulding, Rev Andrew Smith of St Peter’s Church, Godfrey Smith of The Rotary Club, Gary Tustin and Gordon Thorpe of March Museum. We would also like to thank those who sponsor the Fayre and 20Twenty productions who have been instrumental in organising the market place entertainment this year. Your support is very much appreciated. If you enjoy the event and would like to contribute in some way, be it through sponsorship, volunteering or having a stall next time please contact: marketsandevents@fenland.gov.uk

St John’s stopped in their tracks over Estover plans St John’s College, Cambridge, agreed to defer their bid for 95 homes at Estover, March, following a flawed report exposed by the Cambs Times. Garth Hanlon of Savills, the college agents, said it was “imperative” Fenland Council brings it back to the planning committee as soon as possible. Our campaign highlighted how no up to date information had been asked of the NHS. Fenland Council was preparing to accept an outdated report suggesting no NHS funding would be required. In their original email NHS England told Fenland Council that “we currently have GP capacity in the March locality and would therefore not be seeking a section 106 agreement”. The supporting file with the original NHS response was not among 471 documents on the Fenland Council website.

JOHN ELWORTHY john.elworthy@archant.co.uk

On Thursday planning committee chairman Alex Miscandlon told me the NHS report was on line but by Friday he agreed it was not there. On Monday it was still missing and following a series of emails Mr Harding suddenly revealed the existence of an 11th hour email from NHS requesting £35,000. Seemingly the NHS did a massive U-turn and decided after all it would like £35,000 for a GP practice in March. The email said that “mitigation should be secured to increase capacity at Mercheford House surgery in the form of a capital contribution of £34,546 through the S106 agreement”. This newspaper has now asked MP Steve Barclay – also a health

minister- to intervene and get to the bottom of it. Throughout the past week our readers have been asked for their experience of NHS provision in March – overwhelmingly they felt there was no spare capacity, as suggested in the earlier response. The application also faced from criticism Councillor Jan French who said it flew in the face of the town council neighbourhood plan. There was also a surprise last minute intervention by Councillor Mike Cornwell, the portfolio holder for health and well being, who described non-delivery of the requirements for affordable homes as “a direct affront to our policy”. The college’s agents said the scheme was not viable if they had to provide 25 per cent of the homes as ‘affordable’. Cllr Cornwell said: “The application is inadequate and must be re-assessed in more detail.”

Housing bid deferred following exposure by Cambs Times of flawed report

Market Place is about more people taking the lead in choosing, creating and taking part in art experiences in Fenland. Quite literally the Market Place will host a fantastic array of arts celebrating 60s, 70s and 80s pop music and culture, which will start at 10:15am with the parade through the town and continue throughout the day.

When we celebrate a knight Who had a mission to slay

A dragon who was terrorising All of the land

Eating human sacrifices

Well our hero wouldn’t stand For that so he headed out On his trusty steed

With his red and white lance And he did the deed

And if you think saving princesses Is easy, it ain’t

So let’s hear it for our national patron saint

Legacy Dance Company UK

This all male youth dance company based in Norwich was created following Matthew Bourne’s national tour of Lord of The Flies in 2014, and has since gone from strength to strength, training in all styles of dance. GU AR

is a world-wide organisation of which the Rotary Club of March is a member. It makes significant contributions to alleviate suffering in areas of severe deprivation through health & education projects. It also supports local communities and here in March, Rotary has over the past year supported amongst other things young disadvantaged children, the defibrillator project led by Cllr Rob Skoulding and the March & Chatteris Food Bank. Much of the funding of these projects has been through the Santa Sleigh visits to homes in conjunction with March Lions and the monthly newspaper collections at City Road Car Park on the second Saturday of each month between 8.30 and 10.30am. We would like to thank the people of March for their continued support.

The March Society

The March Society is March’s civic society, upholding civic pride in March and representing the needs of the local community. We thank those who support us in promoting and protecting the improvement and development of features of historic and public interest in the built and natural environment of March. Join us and help to make a difference.

Our monthly events are on the 2nd Wednesday: talks in March Library on the heritage and natural environment of March, and heritage walks in summer. We organise March’s Heritage Open Days and work with the local authorities and other groups. www.themarchsociety.org.uk “Absolutely delighted, would recommend to anyone especially if you have dogs as I do. My whole garden including the paths and patio area was covered in mud that was being transferred to my house and car. I was particularly impressed with the 15 year guarantee and the speed in which my garden was transformed and finally mud-free” - local March resident and dog owner.
