1848
1873
Southwestern University is established as Texas’s first university.
1904 A railroad is established. Cotton production dominates from the 1880s until the 1920s when crops are diversified. During this period, Williamson County is the top producer of cotton in Texas.

The City of Georgetown is established as the county seat, named after the land’s donor, George Washington Glassock Sr.
The railroad is extended to Austin for the transport of cotton and cattle.
The San Gabriel River overflows its banks as a hurricane inundates the region with 20 inches of rainfall. The resulting destruction is the impetus to dam the river for flood control.
1921
Lake Georgetown is impounded with the North San Gabriel Dam. It continues to manage floodwaters and serves as a sightseeing park today.

Georgetown is selected as the home of Texas’ first-ever Sun City, an age-restricted community that has been a driving force behind growth.

Austin experiences a period of rapid growth that spreads to Georgetown and kickstarts its development. Since then, old buildings have been carefully restored to preserve the historic charm.
2007
Due to successful preservation efforts, Georgetown is the first Texas city to be designated a Main Street City.
Fortune Small Business magazine names Georgetown one of the best places in the nation to live and launch a new business.
