Catherine E. Nolan

Performing Arts Center

In 1998, the school gymnasium, which had been built during the Great Depression, was renovated into the Catherine E. Nolan Performing Arts Center. Enlarged to accommodate a theater and dance studio, the building was named for “Kitty” Nolan ’29, a longtime friend of Visitation who served as the Executive Secretary of the Alumnae Association for 15 years (1949–64). Groundbreaking took place in April 1997, and it was dedicated on October 4, 1998 at a well-attended kick-off event and picnic to celebrate the school and Monastery’s bicentennial. By Dr. Susan Nalezyty, School Archivist & Historian 2 | JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR

SYNOPSIS Jesus Christ Superstar traces the last seven days of the life of Christ. Judas, an apostle, fears that Jesus’ growing popularity, teaching, and miracles are becoming too large. Closely watching and extremely judgmental of His teachings, the Priests of Judea twist many of Jesus’ statements and form a sinister plot to put an end to this “king.” Mary Magdalene, a follower of Jesus, ministers to him while finding her place amidst the other followers. In hopes of stifling the continuing growth of Jesus’ popularity, Judas meets with the Priests of Judea and, resulting from the meeting, agrees to betray Him. (Matthew 14, Mark 6, Luke 22, John 12) Pontius Pilate, the area’s Roman governor, dreams of a strange Galilean. Unaware of the meaning of this prophetic dream, Pilate continues to govern under Roman law. Jesus visits the Temple of Jerusalem to find it is no longer a house of God, but instead a house of depravity. In anger, Jesus throws out the people, adding to the growing anger of the local religious and political authorities. (Matthew 27, John 2)

With the plot to kill Jesus in place, Jesus and his apostles celebrate Passover together. Jesus warns his apostles the end of His life is near as the result of a betrayal by a close friend. At Gethsemane, Jesus prays for strength for the coming ordeal but also for the deliverance that He knows is not possible. (Matthew 26, Luke 22) With a kiss, Judas betrays Jesus. Jesus’ apostles come to his aid and are surprised that Jesus does not resist the guards preparing to arrest Him. When He is brought before Pilate, He is recognized as the subject of Pilate’s own dreams. Pilate refuses to convict Him and sends Jesus to King Herod. Learning that his kiss was a kiss of death, Judas, filled with grief and remorse, is damned for all time. (Matthew 27, John 18) Back in Pilate’s court, Herod, too, has refused to convict Jesus. Persuaded by the people and by self-preservation, Pilate convicts Jesus and crucifies Him. (Matthew 27-28, John 19)

DIRECTOR’S NOTES Thank you for joining us and supporting the arts at Georgetown Visitation. The production team, cast and crew have been diligently working to present this amazing livestream production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Celebrating 50 years, Jesus Christ Superstar has stood the test of time. This production is proof that the arts are alive and thriving! It has been an extreme pleasure to direct this great piece of musical theatre and bring it to life in a creative way during this time of the pandemic. Faced with some controversy, as most theatrical works are, Jesus Christ Superstar is a story of faith, forgiveness, sacrifice, and redemption. I hope this production entertains you, but also inspires you. I want to extend a special thank you to the entire Visitation community. Thank you to the GVPA and the parents who have

graciously donated items and their time. Thank you to Lisette, Maurya, Ginni, Marika, and Jorge for their support and creativity. She would like to thank her family for their support, her middle school director for the opportunities he’s given her and Mr. Pringle for giving her a role in this show. Amelia Metcalf ‘20 (Head of Sound) Amelia is having a hard time believing that this is her last show. She is incredibly thankful for all of the opportunities, lessons, and lifelong friends that Nolan has given her. She’s grateful to have had a true sound queen by her side for the past three years to keep her going, and she’s both extremely proud of the little sister she never had and saddened that she won’t be able to have another year with her (but she knows the booth will be just fine). So long and goodnight, Nolan.
