Catharine E. Nolan PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

Sister Act Synopsis

In 1998, the school gymnasium, which had been built during the Great Depression, was renovated into the Catharine E. Nolan Performing Arts Center. Enlarged to accommodate a theater and dance studio, the building was named for “Kitty” Nolan ’29, a longtime friend of Visitation who served as the Executive Secretary of the Alumnae Association for 15 years (1949–64). Groundbreaking took place in April 1997, and it was dedicated on October 4, 1998 at a well-attended kick-off event and picnic to celebrate the school and Monastery’s bicentennial. By Dr. Susan Nalezyty Former School Archivist & Historian

It is Christmas Eve in 1977 at a disco nightclub in Philadelphia. Club singer, Deloris Van Cartier, and her two back-ups are performing in front of an empty house. A gangster and four henchmen appear. Van Cartier’s boyfriend, Curtis Jackson, owns the nightclub (“Take Me to Heaven”). Deloris is overjoyed as she believes her boyfriend is going tointroduce her to a record producer on that day. She soon learns, however, that this is not to be. Jackson tells her he cannot join her for Christmas Day but gives her a coat, which she discovers belonged to his wife. Hurt and frustrated, Deloris goes to her backup singers, Michelle and Tina, about her dreams of stardom and fame (“Fabulous, Baby!”) She decides to break up with Jackson and head out of Philadelphia to go fulfill her dreams on her own. When she happens to witness Jackson and his crew murder someone accused of “squealing” to the cops, though, she becomes terrified. Deloris promptly runs away as Jackson orders his men to get her and bring her back. Some time later, Deloris runs into a police station and tells the desk chief, Eddie, about what has happened. The two recognize each other as old friends from school, with Deloris calling him “Sweaty Eddie.” Eddie decides that Deloris needs to go into the witness protection program and sends her to the place he believes Jackson will never find her: a convent!

It has been an extreme pleasure to direct this fun and loving piece of musical theatre and bring it to life in a creative way during this time of the pandemic. I was excited to learn in conversation with Sister Mary Berchmans Hannan, VHM, ‘48 & ‘50 that Visitation has a small connection to Sister Act. Through a Visitation alumna, the Sisters were one of the first to see the 1992 film of Sister Act at a special viewing. Their excitement for this production has been immensely encouraging. The Visitation Performing Arts Department has continued to persevere during this challenging time. When it seemed as if hope was lost; hope was found. Together, we strive to not only bring you great theatre, but to bring you lots of little ray of sunshine. The cast and crew you will see in this performance are prime examples of what a little hope, faith, and, as my mother would say, “elbow grease” can accomplish. Despite all that is happening in the world, take this time to center yourself in the world of Sister Act. We hope this performance encourages and inspires you. I want to extend a special thank you to the entire Visitation community. Thank you to the GVPA and the parents who have graciously donated items and their time. Thank you to Lisette, Maurya, Ginnie, Marika, and Jorge for their support and creativity. Thank you to School Days Productions for their creativity and impeccable professionalism. Thank you to our amazing orchestra that have brought new life to this music. Thank you to the Sisters for their smiles and prayers. Thank you to Dr. Edmondson, Ms. Blaine, and Mrs. Clay for their unwavering support. A huge thank you to my wonderfully wonderful CAST & TECH CREW!!! “Yeeesss!” #blessourshow To God be all the glory, for without Him we would be nothing.

She enjoys tech because she is able to talk to people with her same interests, and plans to join again next year! KATHERINE BRADY ’23 (Ernie/Ensemble) is very excited for her third production at Visitation! Katherine previously performed in Pinocchio, Letters to Sala, and Jesus Christ Superstar. Having been a dwarf/crab (Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon), a gangster (Guys & Dolls), and a hyper-excited plant shopper (Little Shop of Horrors), Gavin is making his Filipina Lola proud in playing a man of the cloth in his first show at Visitation. A junior at DJO, he plays trombone in the jazz band and performs in men’s choir. In his spare time he is a nacho enthusiast and rocks out to ABBA. ELISE SIMON ’21 (Dancer) is eager to be a part of another Masqueraders performance as a dancer for her final high school performance. She has performed for more than ten years with the Centre De Danse in Georgetown, including featured and lead roles in their annual holiday ballet. Elise enjoys dancing and choreography with Visitation’s enVISIon. She also rides horses when she is not doing homework. Elise would love to thank her family and her friends for making this production possible—and of course: Mr. Pringle for all his dedication to the actors in this production. MAYA STUMPF ’24 (Tina and Ensemble) trains in various genres of dance and takes music lessons at the Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA). She is also a member of the Metropolitan Youth Ballet, a pre-professional MSA company where she performs in various roles in the yearly Nutcracker and spring ballet productions. Maya’s most recent musical theater roles include Violet Beauregard in Wonka and Alison Summers in Billy Elliot the Musical. Maya would like to thank her MSA teachers for their continued support and guidance over the years.

LUKE SULLIVAN ’22 (Eddie Souther) is endlessly grateful to the creative team behind this show for giving him the opportunity to be making his Visitation Theatre Debut as Eddie. Luke is a student at Bishop O’Connell, and has starred in It’s A Wonderful Life as George Bailey, Guys and Dolls as Nicely-Nicely Johnson, and many more. He would like to thank the choral director of O’Connell, Mrs. Stahr, for telling him about this opportunity. He hopes you enjoy the show! NINA SWARTZ ’23 (Carpentry) is very excited to be part of the tech crew for Sister Act. This is her second show, and she loves being part of the carpentry department as she continues to learn the ins and outs of set building and design. TARYN TOOMER ’24 (Carpentry) is excited to work on Sister Act, her second musical at Visi. This is her first year at Visitation and she loves participating and learning more about the carpentry department. CATALINA TORRES ’21 (Asst. Technical Director & Head of Costumes), in her final show, is beyond excited and eager to immerse herself as Head of Costumes for Sister Act! She could never get a thing done without her parents, of course, her beautiful costumes team, and her lovely friends — she thanks them for everything! Although it seems to be Cata’s last show, she hopes that she has done enough to leave a bit of a footprint in her second home, Nolan. Much love to everyone who’s been there for her; you know who you are. MILA TORRES ’23 (Ensemble) is psyched to be in her second musical theater performance as an ensemble member!! This fall she also participated in (the one and only) JCS as a member of the ensemble. Mila wants to thank her fellow cast members and Visi arts directors for all of their work and most importantly her family for always loving and supporting her!! SYDNEY VARGO ’23 (Head of Sound) is thrilled to work on her third show at Visitation! She is very grateful for the family and home she has found in Nolan. Sydney is also especially thankful for the two freshmen that decided to team up with her for sound! She looks forward to continuing to watch the shows from the soundbooth and hopes you enjoy the show! LILLIE WEAVER ’24 (Costumes) is excited to be a part of Georgetown Visitation’s Tech Crew for her second high school musical, Sister Act. Lillie could not wait for this new experience in costumes with her friends. She would like to thank her family for all of their support and her director, Mr. Pringle, for giving her this opportunity and investing so much time into Sister Act. She would also like to thank everyone on the costumes team, especially Catalina Torres, her costumes leader, for being a great mentor to her.

LINDSEY WEETER ’23 (Carpentry) is super excited to join the Tech Crew for her first Visi show. She has loved working on the sets and meeting the awesome crew. She wants to thank her family for their support and hopes you enjoy the show! JOEY WEST ’22 (Tj) is super happy to be doing Sister Act! As a “guest star” from Bishop O’Connell High School, he’s excited to be sharing his passion with fellow Catholic school students. He loves both visual and performing arts, but whenever he’s not doing the arts, he is playing sports, reading, listening to music, exercising, traveling, you name it. He thanks all that have supported him through his life, and he hopes that you enjoy the show! ADDIE WILDERMUTH ’23 (Ensemble) is excited to be in her second musical at Visitation! Addie has previously performed in The Lion King, Shrek The Musical, Seussical, and Jesus Christ Superstar. Addie participates in multiple choirs, and plays piano. Addie would like to thank her parents, her sister and brother, her friends, and Mr. Pringle for their support.
