Emblematize Exhibtion Development

Page 1

After looking and creating my own fonts and posters, I am now going to explore different exhibitions and the layouts and experiment with creating my own exhibition. I will look at all details within an exhibitions include decorative styles to the building itself. To begin to develop my own exhibition which I am going to make a model of I have visited a local museum to explore the way they present artworks and layout their gallery. I gathered my own images from visited this museum.

From visiting a local gallery I was able to see that many exhibitions have a range of work both on the walls and free standing. The larger 3D works are placed on the gallery floor with any linking paintings next to it on the wall.

Many of the works on the wall are on a larger scale. Each with a box to explain whom painted the artwork with relevant information. Every piece has a large area so each piece isn’t cramped next to each other.

The exhibition also features modern elements. This particular exhibition feature a larger wall title explaining the name of the exhibition. It also featured a mixture of digital and 3D artworks on the wall. Each part of the exhibition has been placed so each piece has its own space for the audience to view them.

As well as seeing how the exhibition was laid out, I was able to learn how the room itself has been structured. The room featured many old artworks, over time lighting can effect the painting so the lights used were sensitive and the room had few lights. The room walls were white and so was the ceiling, this was so you could have as much natural light as possible to save lighting and to avoid the chance of the lighting effecting the paintings. The room itself is very big, only one small wall was used to separate two parts of the exhibition. Other than this the room was wide with plenty of space to walk around the room. The room also had a small wire fence around some of the artworks to protect them. They did not disturb the painting as they were close to the floor. The paintings where possible were higher up the wall so the audience could view them at eye height.

As well as visiting my local museum I wanted to explore the ways larger museums display their exhibitions and the different size artworks you could see and how they are displayed. I decided to look at the Tate Modern as this is one of the largest art museums in England.

The Tate Modern is a large scale museum so in almost every room large scaled 3D pieces are larger scale artworks are displayed. Each room has plenty of space to walk around and view each artwork. The Tate often displays artworks in glass boxes to protect them if needs be however many of their artworks you can walk around and get up close too.

Often the Tate features large exhibitions of artists for a large amount of time. So the room are often decorated to match the artists style. Often using the same colour and font styles that the artist would have used. As well as including larger scale pieces that are connected to the building itself.

The Tate also featured artwork that’s were able to be placed onto the walls or in glass boxes. It features artworks placed onto the floors and ceilings. However the artwork can be best displayed.

The Tate also has many simple elements, the stairwells also link back to the artist who is have an exhibition there as well as having areas that audiences can sit down. Making the museum customer friendly.

From looking at two museums and how they display their exhibitions I am now going to develop my own exploring every aspect. I will then begin to create my 3D exhibition of my own including all the paintings I have analysed and I will explore more ways to create more advertisement material for my exhibition.

The first room of my exhibition is going to feature a large door for the front entrance. This door will glass so it leaves the room open and bright. I have spread the paintings out three per room so they each have their own space and are easy for audience to look at. The paintings that will feature in my first room will be the ‘Allegory of vanity’ – ‘Vanitas’ – ‘The death of Marat’. I choose these paintings as they are the paintings that feature the most obvious symbolism.

The paintings that will feature in the second room will be ‘Allegory of Venus and Cupid’ – ‘Wheel of fortune’ – ‘Past and Present 3’. I chose these paintings as they all have an underlying allegory of symbolism. Each paintings is very different and this is why they are all separated out on different parts of the room. This room also has a small table so the audiences can sit and admire the artworks in more detail.

The last room in my exhibition will only have one painting featured. This room has been laid out so the audience can sit and admire the painting in more detail. The painting that will be featured in this room will be ‘Lady Shallot’. I chose this particular painting to be on its own as the painting features several different types of symbolism. With a different context linked to every part. This room also has a small table and a half wall to split it so the audience could sit, I also added the parting wall so this one painting almost has a whole room it itself.
