Emblematize Exhibtion Font and Poster designs

Page 1

From my theme of time, death and the use of Symbolism I am going to create an exhibition with approximately 8 artworks, all linking together. I need to work on all of the advertisement material including designing the font, the poster, the ticket stub, and the written guide. I will look at existing examples to gain an insight into what my work should look like. All of the paintings I have looked at all have links to Symbolism. I am going to call my exhibitions ‘Emblematize’ as it essentially means symbolism. I am now going to look at a font for my Exhibition and begin to analyse and develop towards my final piece.

To begin my development of a font for my exhibition I am going to look at several different posters and the fonts they use. This particular one was for Andy Warhol.

Andy Warhols artwork combines block colours and ‘cutout’ style imagery. So the font for this exhibition poster is simplistic. Block colours and the font itself is bold. The imagery used within the exhibition poster uses purple and red colours with aspects of black. The font colour itself is blue and white. These colours and complimentary but also contrast against each other making the font stand out against the poster imagery. The blue is on a white background so it stands out however the white text is on a purple background, so the change of colour helped the text stand out as if it was also to be blue it would blend into the yurple as blue and purple are next to each other on the colour wheel.

This exhibition poster is for photography. Detailing in images that have a ‘Hue’.

This particular poster is for an exhibition that includes imagery with a ‘hue’. Or a mixture of photographic techniques. The font itself is very technical. A hue itself is an application of colures to alter the original colour. The font stands out against the page because its placed onto a black background. But the mixture of colours used as a shadow for the font make this text stand out. The layering of each colour almost suggest that the font is coming off the page and is 3D. The use of bright colours also make the white part of the font stand out even more because its an opposite tone compared to the black and an opposite to the colours. INSIGHTFUL

This poster is for an exhibition for Picasso and his stamp collection. The font itself is created from stamps. The poster itself also uses only two colours, similar to Picasso and his ‘blue period’. Where he created paintings using a limited colour palette. The colours pink and blue contrast each other. Because the blue is a darker colour against the pink. The two parts of the font that say ‘arte’ seemingly have been stamped one after the other because one has less ink printed compared to the other. The font itself covers Picassos eye making it stand out against the page.

From looking at other fonts I began to develop my own. Many of the font I found all linked back to the poster and whom the exhibition was about. As my exhibition is going to have a range of artists I decided to look at ways to combine both the painting and font together. I used the clipping mask tool within photo shop to experiment with layering different painting onto different sized fonts. I found that when I started and clipping masked onto smaller thinner fonts i found it was hard to see the paintings. So I began to experiment with larger fonts with more space to see the painting. This was successful as you can see the painti8ng onto of the font. After experimenting with the clipping mask tool I began to experiment with the different filters and hues I could place onto of the font to make it bolder against darker and more busty backgrounds. I found that is you alter the saturation and light and tone you will see that the font becomes lighter and as many of the paintings I looked at are dark this is helpful as the font was to be placed onto. Although I did experiment with the contrast also so if I was to place my font onto a lighter background you could still see the painting and font.

On this font I looked at ‘The Death of Marat’ painting. The font size itself is large so you can get a larger part of the painting clipped onto it. I decided that the part that has the figure with the death of Marat was the best part to clip onto the font as it’s the most recognisable. After clipping this painting onto the font, I looked at ways of making the font lighter as it was dark. I explored with experimenting with the contrast and saturation tools on Photoshop and found the saturation tool helped me make the font lighter compared to other tools such as the light and tone tool. This font I looked at the painting ‘past and present 3’. Although this particular font is very thin so there is a lack of space to show the painting after it has been clipped. This painting is also very dark so its very hard to see the details on such a small space. I experimented with looking at changing the light and tone to make the font lighter however due to the painting being so dark and the font space being so small making the font lighter almost made the painting invisible to see.

For this font I looked at the painting ‘allegory of cupid and Venus’ for this particular font. This painting is very light and the font itself is large. This made it very hard to find a part of the image that had both light and tone and would stand out on the font once its been clipped. I tried to experiment with different filters to darken and highlight areas of the painting within the font however doing this you lost all detail because the image has so many light colours comparted to dark.

For this font I looked at the painting ‘Vanitas’. This painting includes many smaller details within the composition and I choose to use a larger font so you could grasp all of these details once it has been clipped. I also experimented with using different filters to make the painting within the font lighter. By doing this I was able to make the smaller details within the painting stand out on the font itself.

For this font I used the painting ‘past and present 3’ again because I wanted to experiment more using this painting as my last font was unsuccessful. I used a thinner but longer font for this one as you could see a larger area of the painting but not so much of the painting you lose the smaller details. I kept the painting darker as if I was to lighten it many of the details are lost. For this font I used the painting ‘wheel of fortune’. This painting has many brought colours within it and is very busy so I choose to use a thinner font so you could see smaller aspects of the painting and grasp a larger amount of the colours. After I masked this font with the painting I edited the light and saturation so the colours are bolder. The painting itself includes almost all the colours so this font was able to grasp all of them which makes it stand out particularly on a darker background.

From experimenting with making fonts I am now going to look art several different exhibitions poster designs and begin to create my own posters with imagery I have created myself using traditional art. I will then use these poster to begin to develop other advertisement material such as ticket subs and leaflets for my exhibition.

This poster includes artwork from the artist who is included within the exhibition. The work itself is very abstract so this has been progressed onto the font for the poster as well. As the artwork uses many bright colours the background and smaller parts of the poster have been made to be black and white. This is so the artwork can stand out and is not lost within the poster. The poster doesn’t include much information other than where and who the exhibition about. However the use of art work has made it clear to the audience who is in the exhibition and what they can expect to see. A very simple and effective way of expressing details without a larger amount of text.

This particular poster includes artwork which has been combined into the font of the poster. The poster uses simple imagery of a girl cooking however what she is cooking has been turned into simplistic line work. The exhibition is called ‘Outlined’ son it links back to the line work that has been used. This has made the poster eyecatching because it is unusual but also makes it very clear what type of artwork you will see within the exhibition. A large part of this poster is in black and white so the yellow coloured t-shirt and the girl herself stands out within the black, grey and white areas of the poster. All the text within the poster is also in black and white linking back to the artwork itself that has been used within the poster.

This particular poster is very simple and includes only a small area of colour. The poster is for an exhibition of students work on their third years. So the three within the centre is very significant and very to the point about what the exhibition is. The three in the middle also has a students work clipping masked onto. Because the poster is very simplistic all the extra text has been made in black so it stands out against the white background but also to make sure it doesn’t take away from the three in the middle featuring a student artwork. This makes it very clear and concise about what the exhibition features as well as giving the poster a sophisticated feel.

From analysing different posters I am now going to develop and explore ways to create my own posters for my exhibitions taking inspirations from the previous posters I have looked at.

From looking at my previous poster analysis I developed my own. I combined all the paintings I will have within my exhibition in this particular poster. I edited the opacity so each section of the paintings so they all layered over each other. I also did this so you could clearly see the text and font over the top. I took important detailed parts of each painting and added them into the poster rather than combining all sections of the poster. I used my font that ids slightly darker and added a shadow to it on Photoshop so it would stand out against the background. Using the dark yellow colours that is most visible throughput my poster I also added the smaller text about what my museum is called and what days the exhibition will be held. I kept this poster very simple and included all the paintings on show so the audience seeing the poster has a very clear view of what will be within my exhibition. I made sure the artwork stood out and wasn’t lost within large amounts of text. For the background of this poster I experimented with Photoshop to create the disruption technique. This helped add an eye-catching technique to the poster, adding a modern twist to it. Rather than just have very blocky unsophisticated cut outs of each painting. I found this to be successful because it helped make the text at the top of my poster stand out as well as adding a decorative interesting element to my poster.

I created a secondary poster using the same imagery as my last one. I did to see what was most effective, weather it was using block imagery or using the Photoshop technique of disruption. Although the smaller text I have used within this poster is lost into the background because there are not white areas for it to contrast against. The same happened for my font as it is almost lost within the background imagery as it has no white areas to contrast against. The layering of the images is very clash as each section doesn’t link together as nicely. The disruption technique helped all the imagery linked together.

On this poster I began to develop from my own image. My exhibition is based on symbolism, I looked at the Death of Marat painting which has a position bottle on the floor. I created some simple watercolour paintings of a few bottles using complimentary colours. I did this so I could begin to develop poster using my own artworks. Similar to the posters I looked at previously, which all use original artworks from the artist or in the style of the artist in which is included within the exhibition.

From using my own artwork of the bottles I began to manipulate them to create a poster. I cut each bottle out and layered them over each other to create bold imagery for my poster. I edited the size of each bottle so some are bigger compared to others. After I edited them in placement and shape I began to experiment with different filters on Photoshop to enhance them further. I found the cut-out filter most effective when editing the bottles because it added texture and more definition of colour to each bottle. It also gave each bottle an old painting effect rather than the clean imagery I started with. This links back to many of the paintings that will feature within my exhibition. After adding the filter I began to experiment with the disruption took on Photoshop because it was so successful in my other previous posters. I experimented with doing this on all the bottles but I found it was most successful just on one bottle so you still had the details on the other bottles. After I created the imagery I began to experiment with adding my fonts, however I found that the clipping masked fonts didn’t fit within the poster. So I experimented with different block colours however I found using a light orange worked best, I used the same colour on my smaller text because it stood out against the background. Keeping it simple so it didn’t take away from the imagery I had created.

After creating my previous poster using my own imagery I wanted to create another poster experiment further using different filters and colourways so I could include my fonts that had the clipping mask. I Edited the size and shape of the bottles and layered them. I kept them spread out and small so you could grasp more detail for when I began to edit them. I used the posturize tool on Photoshop to create a paint style image. By using the posturize tool I was able to grasp the slight changes in colour and detail within each bottle. I placed the bottles that had the most colour after using the posturize tool towards the front of my poster compared to the ones that didn’t grasp as much colour. So the pink bottle is place towards the back because compared to the orange and blue bottle which both grasped more colour. After I created my imagery I began to experiment with the clipping mask fonts I had made previously to see which one fitted onto the poster. As my poster is very light coloured with a lack of dark colours I found the font that had the painting of ‘The Allegory of Cupid and Venus’ fit best. After I added the font I experimented more with the light and dark to find the lightness that would of fit onto my poster. The colours that are used with my font also compliment the colours on my bottles so it all links together.

After creating bottles in watercolour I began to experiment using another medium. I used fine liner and crosshatching to create this bottle. Similar to my last painting I used the same idea of the position bottle. ‘Laudanum’ was a popular medicine however was discovered to be poisonous. I experimented with texture to create light and tone using the crosshatching style of fine liner. I used imagery of old Laudanum bottles to help me create this artwork and to have an accurate label of what the bottle might of said. With the original measurements of the dosage you could take and an original logo of a company that cold Laudanum.

After creating my own imagery for this poster I began to experiment with shape and size, along with adding several bottles onto one page. However I found that this made my poster cluttered and busy. So I only placed one copy of the bottle onto my poster. I also experimented with editing the bottle using filters and editing the saturation and colour but I found this made the bottle lose its important detail. Many of the filters and colour changing made me lose the details within the label itself and the details of tone within the bottle. I wanted to keep this poster simplistic and make it clear about what the exhibition is called compared to adding large amounts of imagery. I began to add in my different clipping masks to see which of them fit. I found the font that’s from the painting ‘Allegory of cupid and Venus’ fit the best because its lightly coloured so when its placed next to the black crosshatch drawing I had done it contrasted. I added a filter onto this font to make it seem likes its painted. This blurred out a few of the details however you can still visually see the colours because the filter saturated them as well. I placed the font at the bottom of the poster so you could still see the details of my drawing and not lose any of the detail.

From looking at previous posters I decided to try and imitate this particular one. I used the Lady Shallot painting because of the links to textiles and threads. The lines within the poster I analysed imitate the food the girl is weighing. So similarly I used black lines to imitate the thread. Although this poster wasn’t as successful, because of the lines being to harsh against the painting itself. The painting is very delicate ad light so the harsh black lines stand out to much. The font of emblematize also doesn't stand out as much as I wanted it too. If I was t improve id look at ways I could lighten the lines and the painting to help make it light compared to the harsh lines.

I used Photoshop to create this poster. I used my previous font that I had made and the josh William Waterhouse painting of ‘Lady Shallot’ This poster itself was to imitate a previous I had looked at. I used the Lady shallot painting because not only does it have links to thread the painting feature one person. I used Photoshop to cut the painting apart using the Layer via Cut tool. I also edited the opacity to help the black lines stand out. However I fell doing this it made the black lines stand out to much making the poster took to block like and not to flow well. My font doesn’t sit nicely on the page either, I experimented with differently shadows and filters on Photoshop to see if I could make the font sit better however this was unsuccessful. The painting itself is very old meaning any online copies I found were not of the best quality. The painting itself is worn away, which is why when I added sharp clack lines to it they stood out far to much. Creating a very cartoon like effect rather thsn the lines blending into the painting creating an artistic feature.
