Hello Georgia District! I am glad to see that we are progressing forward and beginning to meet our goals as a district. As we have reached the halfway point in the CKI year, please take some time to assess where you are at as an individual and a club. We still have 6 months left and we should make the best of it. I have seen quite a bit of growth in our district members, as officers and individuals have stepped up to fulfill the tasks that they have been elected to fulfill. Please keep up your hard work, and encourage those around you to step up and reach to new heights as they take on the challenges around them. Updates to our district goals are as follows: We have chartered 1 new club and have 4 additional clubs that are in formation along with 2 clubs that are in the reactivation process. Out of our goal of 5 clubs chartering or reactivating, we are making great progress. We have completed about 30% of our interclub and k-family goals and 16% of our service hour goal. These percentages seem small but there are a couple of factors holding us back, the largest of which is that most clubs haven’t been reporting their hours to the district. Once they do, we should see that we are on track with our goals. An additional thing to keep in mind is that even though we are half way through the year, this time included summer when most clubs have limited activity. We as a district board are proud of what each and every one of you have contributed to the district and hope that you will keep up all of your hard work. I hope to see you at FMR!

Your Friend in Service,

Stefan Ludlow

A Word from...

Simi Oludare And the GA CKI Growth Committee Being a Lieutenant Governor of our district, one of my many duties is to pay visits to the clubs in my division and gauge their performance. I oversee the Metro division and it is made up of the Circle K clubs at the Georgia Institute of Technology (GT), Atlanta University Center (AUC), University of West Georgia (UWG), Georgia State University (GSU) and Columbus State University (CSU). Although I have not been able to make a visit to all of the clubs within my division, I have had the pleasure of recently attending meetings held by the clubs at GT and AUC. After attending these meetings, I can gladly say that the members of these clubs are doing a great job of promoting service, leadership and fellowship on their respective campuses. Both clubs have very enthusiastic members and potential members who are willing to serve the metro-Atlanta public. The various service projects that these clubs perform include (but are not limited) to the City of Refuge, the Boys and Girls Club, Food Bank, Trees Atlanta, Eliminate and the Six Cents Initiative. In addition to performing more service projects, these clubs are very eager to add more enthusiastic members to their ranks and are very excited when they do. And although recruitment on these campuses is often difficult, the members have worked their hardest to have 15 or more members at their meetings, which I believe is a very substantial number of attendees. However, I would like to proudly note that these clubs, although happy, are not satisfied with this turnout and will be looking to recruit more members. To this end, myself and the District Board will continue to provide our help and assistance.

4

Finally, if you ever plan on being in the metro-Atlanta area, do not hesitate to let myself or any of the club presidents and secretaries know. We always look forward to spending time with our fellow Circle K members.

Georgia District Divisions The state of Georgia is broken up into smaller sections called “divisions.” Each division is elected a Lieutenant Governor (LTG) at Georgia’s District Convention (DCON), which is held every year. Though elections occur annually, it is not guaranteed that each division will be elected a Lieutenant Governor each year. Clubs that are in each division are overseen/advised by the elected Lieutenant Governor. Check out the 5 Divisions in Georgia!

By: Katie Chambers International Convention sounds pretty intimidating, and honestly, it kind of was. ICON was my first Circle K convention and I had no idea what to expect, but once we arrived at the hotel I had a strong feeling that I was going to love it! Circle K’ers swarmed the hotel. Everywhere you looked there was a group of them, and the best part was that they were from all different parts of the country and outside the country, including the Caribbean, Aruba, and Bermuda. Service makes up the largest part of Circle K, and it definitely was apparent from the different speeches, workshops, projects, and the talent show! As part of the talent show, one guy auctioned himself off to serenade someone and the money raised would go to ELIMINATE. One girl ended up donating over $100 out of her pocket to ELIMINATE and he sang the sweetest song to her. I wouldn’t doubt if there was a few tears in the audience. The kind of selflessness that Circle K’ers put forth in the efforts of service really inspires me. I’m happy I got the opportunity to go to New Orleans this past summer for ICON. Thanks for the great experience fellow Circle K’ers!

Each year in the days before ICON, there is a Large Scale Service Project (LSSP) that is hosted by Circle K International. I had the opportunity to attend this year and it was one of the best events of my life. During LSSP, 175 members from 26 CKI districts all over the world came together to make a difference in the New Orleans area. Together we completed 17 different projects with many different outreach organizations in the area. As members of Circle K we all came together in the true practice By: Stefan Ludlow of our motto “Live to Serve, Love to Serve. At the end of 3 days of service in New Orleans, CKI as an organization completed more than 4,372 hours 2012-2013 International Board of service in the New Orleans arPresident - Josephine Lukito ea. This experience has been life changing and I hope that I will Vice President - Daniel Tsang get to attend again in the future. Greetings to the Georgia CKI District! It is indeed a great privilege for me to serve you, and the other districts of Subregion G as your CKI Trustee, your chief servant, your main liaison to the CKI Board of 2012-2013. It is indeed my desire to enhance the communication strength between the Districts and CKI, as well as to execute plans that will reach out to the very members of this organization from a CKI perspective. This desire comes from the fact that each and every member is important to this organization. As a result, these initiatives are aimed at doing more than just working with the Governors and District Officers in order to highlight the significance of MEMBERSHIP to CKI, because without each and every prospective member gaining the interest to become members of your home club, the organization would not be where it is now. The District Officers of all five (5) districts and myself have a great working relationship, and this is something I’d like to develop on a club level. I am YOUR servant, YOUR resource, so seize the opportunity to utilize me and my experience in ways that you believe will benefit the success of your CKI club, because ‘clubs run districts, which in return, run CKI’. Last but not least, there is so much for me to say, but it can’t hold on paper! Email me, Facebook me, tweet me, contact me in every way you can! I’m really looking forward to making myself available to you! Have a great CKI year!

Yours in service, Jerome Johnson

Celebrate the Kiwanis Family in November! The time has come to celebrate families with Kiwanis Family Month. There’s a powerful unity that exists among Kiwanis, its foundation and its Service Leadership Programs, and it should be recognized! In November, more than 600,000 Kiwanisfamily adult and youth volunteers will celebrate their partnership in community service. The Kiwanis family promotes the ideals of voluntary services as a means to improve lives and give something back to the community. Are you a part of the family? If not, now is the perfect time to join, become part of the family and start making a difference in your community and the world! Our family includes adult Kiwanis clubs, Circle K clubs for university students, Aktion Clubs for adults with disabilities, Key Clubs for high school students, Builders Clubs for junior/ middle school students and K-Kids for primary schoolchildren. fall recruitment drives Hey everyone!! I hope that you have all enjoyed your summers and are excited to start back school! I have heard from a few of you that there are some very fun projects coming up at several different colleges in our district this semester. There are a few things I want to remind everyone as the semester starts to get underway and another awesome year of Circle K begins: 1) Recruiting members is very important! Many of the clubs in our area lost members to graduation or transfer in the spring and If you are organizing a recruitment drive it is very important to get word out on or something, let your fellow officers help campus for Circle K and what it is about. you. That's what they are there for. And you can always call or e-mail the district board if you need help with something. 4) This is potentially the most important thing: HAVE FUN!!! If people are coming to the meetings and getting bored out of their minds, they probably aren't going to want to come back. If you aren't sure how to make a meeting more fun, or how to have a fun recruitment drive, contact the district board, and we will point you in the right direction! Good luck to everyone as you begin new classes and meet new people. I wish you a very great semester!!

2) Start meeting early in the semester. The earlier you get started, the more likely you are to get people interested before they feel Live to serve ♼ to serve!!!! like everything is too busy.

12

3) Don't overwhelm yourselves (Especially Kristi Parker Presidents). I know it sometimes seems like 2012-13 GA CKI Coastal Division there's a lot to be done in a small amount of Lieutenant Governor time, but you don't have to do it alone.

By: Christine Mayfield In Circle K, there are many ways to help out people who need a hand. However, before you can get to that stage, you have to first come up with these ideas to help out your community. Now, there are some simple ways of doing that. First step is to go around your area or county to see what kind of service projects you can do. You can either go to Animal shelters, Boy & Girls Club, or SAFE House Thrift Stores to see if they need help with anything. You can also come up with get ideas to do on your own, like making IV ornaments for children in a nearby hospital or making sandwiches to give out to the homeless. In any way, when you find the projects you want to do, you just have to simply complete them. Some clubs help out with one organization that they come to love, but that does not mean that you should always stick to that one. You should always branch out and do different service projects to help different people and reach out with a helping hand. For example, Young Harris College has a few different types of service projects like baking cookies and giving them out to the police and fire departments to show support for them and thank them for everything. Another one, of course is the SAFE House Thrift Store, which involves working in the store so they can be able to give more to the Shelter. Finally, all that you need to do is to spread around the kindness you have, because the only the way the world will get better is showing that kindness.

Although Zac is a new member of the Georgia Southern Circle K Club, he has taken real initiative to show what a good example of a true leader and volunteer is. He has attended almost every service project and service opportunity this semester, even donating his truck and services to help get wood for our BBQ Hut at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fairgrounds. Not only that, Zac has also managed to attend every club meeting and bring his “A” game and club spirit. Overall, Zac is a truly wonderful addition to our club, and it is my pleasure to nominate him to receive this recognition.

East Georgia College Circle K has had a great start to a new year of service. They’ve held countless club meetings, one of which was an awesome ice cream social, have maintained good relations by visiting their sponsoring Kiwanis club of Swainsboro often, and have already devoted countless hours to service. On October 6th, eight of their club members got together in Savannah at the Ronald McDonald House where they made homemade spaghetti dinners for the visiting families. They also helped with The Judgment House and have made plans to help Georgia Southern Circle K with their annual BBQ Hut at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair. On top of all this, they are starting a new service project which looks to gather donated hygiene products for nursing homes in their area. With already eight new dues paid members, this club is on the right track to a great year, and I am honored to nominate them for this recognition.

STUFH International Service Initiative Students Team Up to Fight Hunger (STUFH) began in 1999 at Cornell University. STUFH is dedicated to linking food banks with local colleges and universities for two purposes: to collect food for those who need it most and to raise awareness of these needs upon the local student population. The main focus of STUFH comes at the end of a school year, when students move out of apartments and dorms. Instead of discarding unopened non-perishable food into trash bins as they leave, STUFH supplies food bins for students to donate these unwanted items. There has been more than 1 million pounds of food raised for food banks to feed the hungry. It is the mission of STUFH to increase the gathering of food at college campuses throughout the country. To help with this service initiative you can volunteer at a food bank, make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, work at a homeless shelter, volunteer at a soup kitchen, and you can do can food drives.

HEALTHY District Service Initiative HEALTHY (Health and Exercise Always Lead to Happier Youth) was developed in 2001 by the Georgia District Board of CKI. This program focuses on teaching children to eat healthier and lead more active lifestyles. To help with this service initiative you can help out at a youth home; make coloring books to teach children about living a healthier lifestyle, or just anything that helps teach youth about living a healthier lifestyle.
