(1) Unite the Georgia District! (2) Bridge the gap between the club and district levels (3) Get members to do more service! Personal Goals: Graduate college and apply for graduate school
District Theme: “Uniting People to Serve” (UPS) S: Serve
U: Unite
P: People
It’s time to unite the gap between the club and the district level! Communication is essential to making our district run smoothly. How many times have you not known something or you were confused but didn’t know who to turn to? I plan to change this by visiting clubs, finding a more efficient way get District Event publicized, and personally inviting members to our District Board Meetings! Communication is the key to making our members trust the District Board!
People: the core of our organization! We do service while changing people’s lives! Without the members of the organization, Circle K wouldn’t be what it is today! I plan to make sure the members are known and recognize so that they are absolutely sure that the district board want the member’s voice to be heard! I would like to get member opinions, be in contact with all club Presidents, and acknowledge the hard work of our members through special recognization throughout the year!
As CKI members, our main focus is SERVICE! We have to increase our number of service hours as a district! Members can not always travel but we can do tons of service projects in our clubs! I plan to send out service hours monthly so people never run out of projects to do! I also plan to work with the District Secretary to ensure that at least 75% of our active clubs are consistently submitting CMRs!
XOXO, - Ashleey

Chopping Butts All Night! by: Genevieve Akinwumiju
Over an entire week in October, Georgia Southern Circle K and the Statesboro Kiwanis partner up to hold the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair. It’s the biggest draw to Bulloch County, attracting thousands each day. Kicking off with a parade on Monday, the week is spent eating caramel apples, riding some thrilling coasters, and, of course, eating sandwiches at the Circle K BBQ Hut. While the Kiwanis are busy selling pancakes and sausages, our Circle K stays in a small hut and chops up pork butts. It’s our annual fundraiser and the greatest fellowship time for our club. For the past two years, we’ve also invited the East Georgia Circle K out to help with all the orders that come in. With all the Circle K’ers in that hut, it’s bound to be a great time! So next October, make sure you find your way down to Statesboro and get some food at our hut!

The Amazing Race Warriors By: Rakeya Scott, FMR Chair
DETOUR
That’s the title that all of our FMR attendees received after attending this year’s Fall Membership Retreat. Starting on Friday, we kicked off the event with GACKI Amazing Race footage from this year’s District Board then we went on to develop teams for the weekend. From the start, Circle K’ers were able to make new friends and develop great FMR memories! Saturday was packed with great activities! We started early with some awesome workshops, a beneficial roundtable session, and a fabulous group photo! We also acquired two new certified workshop leaders, Kip Wise and Joe Carbonet (Congratulations!). In the afternoon, Circle K’ers went into competition mode as they participated in GACKI’s Amazing Race. They all participated in crazy and wacky games which included team jump roping, CKI trivia, water pass, needles in rice stacks, and a cotton ball carrying frenzy! Later that evening, we had a line of fun activities, including making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, making baby blankets, and having a “popping” fundraiser which involved buying balloons and popping them for the surprise inside. We ended the night with an FMR-style dance that had attendees dancing the night away. Sunday, we wrapped up with two awesome activities that were a great ending to a fabulous weekend. Thank you to Georgia Kiwanis Governor Pat Tritt and first lady Eunice, Circle K International Vice President Nicole Loehr, and Georgia Key Club Governor Ginny Byrd for attending this year’s FMR. Be sure to check out the FMR pictures in this newsletter. Next year, I hope to see YOU in them! Happy December!
ROAD BLOCK
Silly spellchecker.... you are so
Most words in the English language are written as they sound e.g. “scategory”, or “grits”. Of course there are exceptions like phonetic (how ironic is that?), or as I learned at Fall Membership Retreat (FMR); the word meaning onward or ahead is spelt “foward” and the district that hosted this awesome event is spelt “Jaw-ja”. Fonetics aside, I had a BLAST in the Amazing race! FMR hilites By: Nicole Loher included: • Eating s’mores the first nite! Then going to the Waffle House yummm!! • Playing sines, Sonic BOOM! (hehe hope all of you Tech students liked that one) • Playing scategories • Icebreaker games (People to People!!) • Rocking jepardy with Melissa Kell and Genevieve Akinwumiju • The reoccurring theme of the fork caught in the garbage disposal (insert action) • Dancing… LIMBO! • Playing futbal ( Jay and Loren, you still need to teech me!) • Team B.L.U.E. totally rocking jump rope and sharaids! • Notes in our maleboxes – Thanks everyone! • An excellent bord meeting If you are reeding this and have no idea what I am talking about, you missed out on an AWESOME weekend! Speshal thanks to Governor Ashleey and Rakeya for putting this together! If you haven’t already done so, befriend me on facebook pleeze!! FYI it is really difficult to rite when there are red squiggly lines all over the place… silly spellchecker!

Reinhardt Circle K recently was involved in packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, a drive that Samaritan’s Purse, founded by Franklin Graham, does every Christmas, as well as year-round. Children who receive the shoeboxes have never been given a gift in their life. These small boxes, filled with treasures, bring a smile to a child’s face. Mary Randall, Reinhardt University’s Circle K Vice President, and a Resident Assistant at the Univsersity, Shannan Reneau, are heading up the project at Reinhardt’s campus, located in Waleska, Georgia. Mary and Shannan have teamed up with several organizations, including: Reinhardt Rotaract, Residence Life, Cherokee County High School Interact, Campus Ministry, and Circle K. The event was held in the student center with a large turnout.
Operation Christmas Child a rd t ! h n i Re ch e t ga and
Mary Randall explained why she is so passionate about this cause. “Since 1994, my mom and I have been involved with Operation Christmas Child. Through the years, we have made over 700 boxes. We have also received letters from families, ranging from Guatemala to the Ukraine, thanking us greatly for our kindness and love. These letters have touched my life, urging me to pursue Operation Christmas Child, even into graduate school. Operation Christmas Child is the best way for our community to serve the international community. Think of the life of a child you will touch!” Georgia Tech’s Circle K also joined Reinhardt in Operation Christmas Child this year; packing shoeboxes with much needed supplies and gifts. Each shoebox consists of age appropriate school supplies, toiletries, hard candy, toys, and a letter or card. Shoeboxes are divided into boys and girls, in age ranges from 2-4, 5-9, and 10-14. Shoeboxes are sent around the world. Individuals who pack the boxes are emailed information about the area where their shoebox(es) were delivered. The event brought many service organizations on Reinhardt’s campus together to serve a global community. Operation Christmas Child is what Kiwanis has been founded upon: “changing the world, one child and one community at a time.”

Kiwanis International Get to know about Kiwanis International and meet the Georgia Kiwanis Governor Patrick Tritt!
fo on For more in , visit Kiwanis International was founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan. In the early years, members n a iw is focused on business networking. In 1916, Kiwanis became an international organization with the Georgia K nis.org! creation of the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, Ontario. In 1919, the organization changed its focus to a iw k ia rg o ge service. By 1962, worldwide expansion was approved. In 1987, women officially were allowed into the membership. Today, Kiwanis clubs, located in 80 nations, help their communities in countless ways. Each community’s needs are different—so each Kiwanis club is different. By working together, members achieve what one person cannot accomplish alone. When you give a child the chance to learn, experience, dream, grow, succeed and thrive, great things happen. The Georgia District of Kiwanis International was established in 1919. The three clubs in the District at that time were Atlanta, Columbus, and Rome. Over 90 years later, the Georgia District has grown to 23 regions with over 170 clubs active within communities throughout the state of Georgia.

Georgia District Divisions The state of Georgia is broken up into smaller sections called “divisions”. Each division is elected a Lieutenant Governor (LTG) at Georgia’s district convention (DCON), which is held every year. Though elections occur annually, it is not guaranteed that each division will be elected a Lieutenant Governor each year. Clubs that are in each division are overseen/ advised by the elected Lieutenant Governor. Check out the 5 Divisions in Georgia!

Circle K International has recently changed their dues structure. Lucky for you all, we have the scoop on the new structure! Beginning October 1, 2010, clubs will now pay flat rate international club fees, instead of individual club member dues. The rate will depend on the school’s location, size and type. Check out the new club fees below!
Travel time—For a project which is mainly service in nature, FULL travel time may be counted; for a project which is service and social in nature, ONE-WAY travel time may be counted
- Four-year institutions < 1,000 students = $450 per year - Four-year institutions > 1,000 students = $600 per year - Two-year institutions = $450 per year In addition to the club fee, Georgia clubs will need to pay $9 per member for district dues each year. Last but not least! The new minimum students need for clubs to be in good standing are below!
- 2 year schools or 4 year with less than 1000 students: Need 10 students to be in good standing
- 4 year schools over 1000 students: Need 15 students to be in good standing

Vice President: Clare Soffe Treasurer: Rebecca Marshburn
1. How many members does the UGA Circle K club have? We have about 30 members right now, but we seem to grow every meeting! 2. What does service mean to your club? Service is very important to our club and the community. Athens-Clarke county is one of the poorest counties in Georgia and there are countless opportunities to help our surrounding community. The community looks to the university and its students to lead the way in service. Service means to look beyond your own needs and problems to see how you can aid those who are suffering with insurmountable struggles. It is being selfless while being surrounded by many whose main concern is themselves. 3. What is your club’s most successful service project so far? Our most successful project so far this year is our weekly bingo nights at Grandview care center, a local nursing home. The nursing home is very impoverished and they always need extra help entertaining the residents. 4. What plans does your club have to continue success throughout the school year? We plan to increase student membership and influence within the Athens community. We also plan on working more closely with Kiwanis and local Key clubs to strengthen the bond between the K-family. 5. What does is mean to you to be apart of Circle K International? “I love being a part of Circle K International. I have always loved doing individual volunteer work, but it’s a great feeling to know that I am a part of something bigger than myself!” (President Marcy Breffle)
