Hello friends!
My name is Kylie Wilson, and I am your 2017-2018 Georgia Circle K Governor. At our annual District Convention next month, we will retire this year’s District Board and elect a new board. I am very excited to see all of you at DCON on Feb. 23rd25th at the Macon Marriott City Center. We will have workshops to further educate members and give awards to recognize all the hard work that you did this year. Also, we are combining our convention with Key Club, so this will be a great time for presidents to meet these incoming freshmen that will be attending your colleges next fall! The convention will be put together by our DCON chair, Lucy Zheng, and her committee, so come enjoy all their hard work. Also, do not forget to turn in your awards packets! Shortly after District Convention we will have our Service Social Tour (SST) put together by our SST Chair, Emily Clement. She will have more information about SST soon! Make sure your clubs are thinking about International Convention this year, which will be held in Chicago, Illinois, July 4th-8th. Registration for CKIx will open later this month, so watch our social media pages for information! As the service year is ending (March 31), we can review our District goals and make sure we are achieving them. Our 2017-2018 District goals are as follows:
Reactivate or charter 3 clubs by March 31, 2018. Complete at least 3,550 service hours by March 31, 2018. Have at least 75 Circle K members at our Fall Event, FMR, by November 12, 2017. Have at least 75 Circle K members at our District Convention by February 25, 2018. Raise $2,500 for the WASH project by March 31, 2018.
I hope you guys are looking at your club goals and trying to complete them before the semester is over, too! If you need any help achieving your goals you can use our resources found on our website or at our international website. If you cannot find what you need, do not hesitate to email any board member. It has been a pleasure leading this District through this past year, and I am so excited to recognize you all next month. I have strengthened my leadership over the past year, and I plan to finish our year strong! The District Board members come together several times throughout the year to make our organization better by doing a lot behind the scenes, and we want you to join us on the board! If you are interested in running for a board position at District Convention please contact the person that currently holds the position you are interested in, or contact me about any position! If you are interested in a chair position, the applications will be sent out after the new Governor is elected. If you are interested in an International position please refer to the international website or contact me or our International Trustee, Drew Kelley, at drew@georgiacirclek.org. See you guys soon!

On November 10-12, Georgia Circle K held our annual Fall Membership Retreat at the Georgia FFA-FCCLA Center in Covington. Circle K members from all over Georgia attended, along with several members from other districts! Our International President Justin Crofoot and International Vice President Eric Yan visited us and spoke to us about CKIx and running for international office. On Friday night, we gathered at a bonfire and introduced ourselves, while enjoying s'mores. This year, we were assigned teams to foster fellowship. We gathered in our teams on Saturday to perform service on the campgrounds and compete in games such as picture telephone and poncho, which brought lots of laughter and excitement! During the free time, members played football, spent time on the lake, or played in a large game of Scattergories!
Besides those fun activities, we also attended workshops on Saturday. The workshops, led by the district board and international committee members, were opportunities for Circle K members to learn more about the organization. For example, there were workshops about the international service partners, inter-clubs and Kiwanis family relations, and ideas for recruitment and service events. Trey Dolder and Lucy Zheng were voted as Mr. and Ms. FMR—the most spirited at the event!
Recap Video Facebook Album
We completed two service projects during FMR. For the first service project, we assisted the campground facilities in raking leaves and moving dead tree limbs from the roads. After that, we packed bags containing toiletries such as toothbrushes, deodorant, and soap. These kits were for SimpleNeedsGA, an organization based in Marietta dedicated to helping vulnerable populations. The bags are distributed to struggling parents in the area by social workers.
FMR was an amazing experience, thanks to the passion for service of all the people who attended. We give special thanks to the international board and committee members who assisted us in teaching new members about service, leadership, and fellowship!
District Convention 2018 When: Friday, February 23 to Sunday, February 25 Where: Macon Marriott City Center Cost: $185 per person
Register By January 30 Late Registration: February 12 District Convention (DCON) is an annual district event where Georgia Circle K members celebrate the past year and elect the new district board. It's important for all Georgia Circle K clubs to attend so we can foster district relationships and have accurate representation for voting. Clubs will apply for awards for their clubs and officers, and the winners are announced Saturday. The money raised for the WASH project during the year will be used during our fundraiser to pie district officers in the face. Throughout the weekend, candidates running for district office will campaign, and elections will be held Saturday night. DCON registration covers lodging for both nights, meals, and a t-shirt. The awards packet needs to be completed and mailed to the district before DCON. If you are interested in running for a district or international office position, please prepare campaigning material. This year, the GA Key Club DCON will be held in the same place as GA Circle K. During online registration and DCON, Circle K members will be able to sign up to participate in the Key Club 3K on Saturday morning, benefitting Georgia Sheriffs' Youth Homes. Registration for the 3K is $10 and includes a t-shirt. All documents needed for DCON, such as the awards packet, ad sales packet, and medical form, can be found on the Georgia Circle K website. Sell ads to lower the cost of DCON registration, so ask local businesses and your sponsoring Kiwanis club if they'd like to purchase a spot in our program. Keep an eye out for emails and social media updates about DCON!
Penny Wars This year Georgia Circle K has devoted our Governor’s Project to raising money for the WASH Project which brings clean water, sanitation, and hygiene practices to people in need. To encourage our clubs to raise money for this project, we began a new fundraising initiative called Penny Wars! Each club in Georgia has been matched up against another club in a battle to see who can raise the most money from November 12th to January 31st. Penny Wars uses a points system in which you can both gain points for your club and deduct points from your opponent club. Each club gains points by collecting pennies and deducts points from their opponent’s total by collecting all other forms of money! Here's the breakdown: Penny: +1 point for your club Nickel: -2 points for your opponent’s club Dime: -3 points for your opponent’s club Quarter: -4 points for your opponent’s club Dollar: -5 points for your opponent’s club Venmo & Other Electronic Donations: points are awarded based on the closest cents (ex. $1.52 would be one dollar, two quarters, and two pennies) Be sure to keep fundraising because Penny Wars ends on January 31st! Please bring all of your money from Penny Wars and other fundraisers with you to District Convention! The winning clubs and the club that raised the most money overall will be announced at District Convention. If you are the president or treasurer for your club, you can submit your Penny Wars fundraising totals through the Penny Wars Form.

Coas tal Georgia Southern has had a good semester and recently had a banquet where they played a movie for their club as a way to end their semester. Georgia College & State University also had a great semester. GCSU is hoping to plan a car or washing machine smashing fundraiser to raise money for WASH. Both clubs have done great work this past semester and cannot wait for this new semester to begin with new volunteer opportunities. Contact Coastal LTG Erin at coastalltg@georgiacirclek.org.
Metro Georgia State University’s service year has been full of many volunteer opportunities from volunteering at Centennial Olympic Park, Safe house Outreach, Boys and Girls Club of Atlanta, and a financial literacy program. LaGrange College met with their Boys and Girls Club in November and helped by handing out rewards for their "Terrific Kids" program. In December, they volunteered at the college's Christmas at their Hill Community event. Georgia Tech habitually volunteered at their food bank and Boys & Girls Club throughout the semester. They attended their sponsoring Kiwanis Club meetings and fundraised money for WASH by Bake Sales and a proceeds night! University of West Georgia participated in Safe Treat where they raised money for UNICEF. They also interclubbed with Tech at their proceeds night fundraiser. Emory University has officially been chartered! They are establishing mentoring programs at local high schools with Emory Law’s Public Interest Committee and a peer-mentorship program for students with the Emory Autism Center. They also volunteer with local service organizations like Lifeline and Medshare. Contact Metro LTG Tiarra at metroltg@georgiacirclek.org.
The Mountains Division is doing many great things this upcoming semester, and I am so excited. One of the best ways that we promote divisional unity in Mountains is through our Groupme! It’s a great way for clubs to bounce ideas off of one another and make plans! Recruitment has been going well, especially for Berry College and Dalton State College. They have both gained several new members, and they hope to get them more involved in projects. Young Harris College has been fundraising like crazy for the WASH project, raising the most money in our division. I am so proud of everything they have accomplished. Berry College is working hard to increase their participation among members, and just wrapped up their big March of Dimes service project in November. Contact Mountains LTG Courtney at mountainsltg@georgiacirclek.org.
Perimeter With the new semester coming up, Perimeter Division is planning to have a divisional rally where clubs can come together for fellowship and service. We are continuing our penny war fundraising, and we have far exceeded our divisional goal of $150 for the WASH project. Perimeter hopes to make the upcoming semester a great one. University of Georgia is working on recruitment by planning for the winter activities fair. They are planning to hold several service projects before the semester is over and continue with their growth in District and International event attendance. Oxford at Emory is working to increase their service within their community and have a large service project coming up to kick off the semester. They also plan to increase their District involvement by sending more members to District events such as DCON.
Contact Perimeter LTG Brianna at perimeterltg@georgiacirclek.org.
Plains There is a Plains Division Rally tentatively scheduled for February 3. It will be a chance for ABAC and Valdosta to work on a service project together and engage in fellowship. Everyone will get the chance to meet Billy the Buffalo, our division mascot. I will update the presidents with more information at the beginning of the semester. Valdosta State is currently working to adopt a mile of road to look after and keep clean. They will also continue their work with the Georgia Sherriff’s Youth Home by volunteering with the kids. ABAC is planning to keep their mile of road spotless through their clean-up efforts. They are also looking forward to welcoming the incoming new members to continue their great work. Contact Plains LTG Dana at plainsltg@georgiacirclek.org.
Club Development We are working with LaGrange College and Reinhardt University to get them chartered this year. We have already chartered Emory University, and we are so excited to have them in our growing district! Do you know of any colleges that could use a Circle K club? We would love have help a college start one! Check out this Kiwanis page for more information on starting a club. Every club must have a sponsoring Kiwanis club, complete the charter paperwork, and pay dues. Contact Club Development LTG Rey at clubdevelopmentltg@georgiacirclek.org.
What’s happening in the K-Family? This year, Georgia Key Club is led by Governor Jose Ramirez, Secretary -Treasurer Jin Jeon, Bulletin Editor Tess Mosley, and 12 Lieutenant Governors. They have been working hard for a successful service year, and they will be holding their District Convention in Macon when we hold ours. Georgia Circle K is looking forward to participating in their 3K and answering questions about colleges.
Make sure to visit your sponsoring Kiwanis Club and thank them for everything they do. We are grateful to have many Kiwanis members attend events and support our organization. Without them, Circle K International could not exist and help so many people.
Member Spotlight Chantel LaFleur, the Vice President of Georgia College & State University Circle K, has done an outstanding job this service year! She is a sophomore nursing major and has been a member of Circle K for two years. Our District Secretary-Treasurer, Shelby Munyan, says, “Immediately, she set off to do what she could to make the most of her position. She made it a point to meet with our Governor to learn more about her position once she took it on. Also, she has reached out to help our club explore new service opportunities with the community, including volunteering at our local nursing home. She has a big passion for service, and does everything with a smile. We are lucky to have her on board!” Thank you, Chantel, for all your hard work, and good luck with the rest of the service year!
Club Spotlight The University of West Georgia is having a great service year! Under President Olivia Harris, they have participated in several service projects, such as Safe Treat, raising money for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. District Editor, Marisa Hoenig, says, “I attended one of their meetings and it was so engaging and fun. Two Kiwanis clubs attended, and we played pictionary as an ice breaker. Everyone has such a good time, and you could tell that they enjoyed each other's company!” Great job, UWG!
Service Hours Update We are glad to see that many clubs are managing the transition into the new CMR system. As a district we have logged over 1,000 hours! Club secretaries, please continue to keep track of your club’s activities, and for those clubs who are missing CMR’s or have not accessed the new system via the Membership Update Center, please be sure to do so, and to contact Shelby at sectreas@georgiacirclek.org with any questions! Keeping track of our service hours is important; these numbers help us and others realize the impact that we are having on the community. Remember that all CMR’s are due on the 5th of every month via the Membership Update Center!
Here are the 4 clubs with the highest number of service hours: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Georgia Institute of Technology: 401 hours University of Georgia: 285 hours University of West Georgia: 150 hours Georgia College & State University: 101 hours
1000+ Service Hours
Please remember that District Convention is coming up, and in order to be eligible for awards, all of your CMR’s must be submitted on the Membership Update Center! Any hours submitted using the old system must also be submitted to the MUC.
Please submit your dues if you haven’t already! We are also happy to report that many clubs have managed to turn in their dues on time! However, not all clubs made the due date; please make sure to stay in contact with Shelby at sectreas@georgiacirclek.org and your designated Lieutenant Governor on the status of your dues collection process. Dues must be paid for your club to remain in good standing, so please be sure to keep communication open so we can continue to grow together as a district!
Service Projects for Upcoming Holidays The beginning of a new year brings new possibilities and service opportunities for your club. This new year, consider getting more involved in your community: especially around the holidays! So how can you get more involved? One of the first holidays coming up is MLK Day! Take the day that you have no school and spend it with your club as a day of service! Reach out to those in your community and see what kind of large scale impact you can make by devoting the entire day to service. Use Valentine’s Day as a way to think of those that are far from their loved ones. Your club can write and decorate cards to servicemen and women overseas or to children in hospitals. This year, St. Patrick’s Day is on a Saturday, so spend the day volunteering at a library or Boys and Girls Club to make an impact on children. There are plenty of fun crafts and activities that you can do to celebrate! Even if volunteering on a holiday doesn't work out, take the time during this new year to add more service to your Circle K. After all, we are here to live to serve and love to serve! Contact Service Chair, Emmie, for more ideas: service@georgiacirclek.org
Spicing Up Your Meetings Before the meeting: Have a brief board meeting to make sure everyone knows the agenda Play music as people come in and settle down (you can even take requests from members who arrive early!) Provide snacks for longer meetings with service projects Polling for desired snack options beforehand allows you to learn more about members and encourage them to attend meetings During the meeting: Incorporate opportunities for members to interact Give options for service projects and ask members which ones they’d be interested in Use kahoot or other fun, interactive platforms to educate members about the problem within their immediate or global community that they serve for It is important for members to understand the meaning behind their service Members are more likely to participate in service activities if they can see a direct correlation between their actions and resulting benefits for the people they serve! Always encourage members to ask questions After the meeting: Have some downtime for members hang out and get to know their executive board Encourage members to participate by implementing a reward system where dedicated members are invited to an end-of-the-year party or receive awards. A lot of these suggestions are flexible, so add your own spice to it! Contact Linda at mde@georgiacirclek.org for more tips!

Fundraising Fun GCSU may be a small school, but we have some big ideas about how to fundraise. The key to fundraising for a cause is to be unique. Think about something you would personally stop for if you saw a random club tabling. While most clubs at our school sell cookies and donuts, we try to think out of the box to attract attention to our project. Rubber Ducky Raffle We set out a kids pool of rubber duckies (fill it with water of course) and write numbers 1-60 under each duck. Each number corresponds to a random prize we got donated from various centers on campus (academic center, service center) as well as our own unopened goods. We have items ranging from ramen noodles to index cards and scantrons to crazy socks. Find things that college students need in their daily life so they’ll be more likely to stop by. We found about 40 prizes and for the other 20, we matched numbers to random candies (lollipops, ring pops, snickers, etc) so the odds of winning anything when playing are 100%. We sold each duck for $1 and replaced the prize with more candy or prizes so no ducks would be retired. Piña Coladas We mixed some coconut milk with pineapple juice and put a little toothpick umbrella on top! We sold these for $2 in an 8oz clear cup. These are delicious and so worth getting to class a little late for. Don’t forget the colorful bendy straw to go with it! Butterbeer Who doesn’t like a Harry Potter themed drink? Butterbeer is made from milk, cream soda and a little bit of brown sugar. It’s a yearly favorite and sold for $1 each! We do this one at the beginning of the year and definitely attract prospective members through it!
These are our most popular fundraisers throughout the year, remember: the more unique the product you’re selling is, the more other students on your campus will buy it and maybe even join Circle K! Happy fundraising!! Thank you to Paige Overmyer, GCSU Circle K Club Treasurer, for these great suggestions!
Electing New Club Officers With club elections approaching quickly, it is helpful to familiarize yourself with the different elected positions on a Circle K club level. Although each Circle K club has its own unique characteristics, guidelines for the club officers can be very helpful. The following are the typical elected positions, but more club officer positions can be formed through appointment by the president to best accommodate the club's needs. All clubs should elect new officers before April 1 (the first day of the new service year). President oversees all operations of the club assists the other officers in setting goals for the upcoming year represent the club at other functions form committees for the year preside over club meetings Vice President oversee the committees formed by the president preside over meetings during the absence of the president report the progress of the committees Secretary record member attendance and participation record minutes for the meetings report all club activity in the club monthly report (CMR) Treasurer collect and record member dues prepare club budget for each year deposit club funds Officers: Encourage active members to run for a position! If you recognize their potential, that may be the deciding factor for them to run for office.
After electing new officers, go to Club Officer Leadership Training! Club Officer Leadership Training (COLT) is a training session held for all newly-elected club officers in April. Officers are trained by district board members that have held their position and can offer advice. ALL officers are encouraged to attend, including committee chairs, as we will hold sessions for all positions. Officers will also learn more about district events and initiatives and receive the chance to meet the new district board. More information about registering for COLT will be released after District Convention.

During the fall, several Georgia Circle K board members attended other districts’ events in our Subregion! We attended the Kiwanis Family Conference in Black Mountain, NC held by the Carolinas Key Club. We had the opportunity to be team leaders and interact with Kiwanis, Circle K, and Key Club members from throughout the nation. Also in November, we attended the Alabama Leadership Academy held in Gulf Shores, AL by the Alabama District of Circle K. We participated in several team activities and had fun bonding with their district!

The WASH Project HELLO LOVELY GEORGIA CIRCLE K’ERS! The New Year is upon us, and with that I hope that you are able to “wash” away any negativity from 2017 and begin 2018 with a renewed vigor to fundraise for the WASH Project, of course! My name is Billy Hackett, a 2017-2018 International WASH Associate, and I am here to passionately remind you that CKI is partnering with UNICEF until 2022 to improve access to and quality of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in the lives of those on the islandnation of Haiti, which is the poorest state in the western hemisphere. We take access to safe water for granted in the United States, but must pause to reflect that nearly 1,000 children across the globe die every day from complications related to WASH. Each day an estimated 663 people drink unsafe water, and each year hundreds of children die from something as preventable as diarrhea. In Haiti, about 40% of the population—4,000,000 human beings—do not have access to clean water, and only 1 in 5 of Haiti’s inhabitants have access to a sanitary toilet; this reality leads to everything from fewer opportunities for success to disease to a decreased quality of life to death. In our partnership with UNICEF, Circle K members across the world have decided such detrimental conditions and the suffering that ensues are no longer permissible. Every cent and dollar fundraised for the WASH Project is aimed at educating Haitian communities and providing adequate resources that will create measurable and sustainable change for human beings across the country, ultimately enabling them to take command of their own destinies. How can your club get involved? Have a bake sale! Sell raffle tickets, and award the winner gift cards or CKI swag! Organize a WASH Walk, or a 5K for your community! Pie your members in the face, live auction style! Pass around a collection box each meeting for members to donate their spare change while sharing a positive experience—“Happy Cents”! Participate in your district’s WASH initiatives, like Penny Wars: you could be named the champion! Stay tuned for information about our next major fundraising push, “March Water Madness,” in anticipation for World Water Day on March 22. Find inspiration in the knowledge that contributing to WASH is to be a part of something so much bigger than yourself, and spread your passion for the cause to those that you meet. Circle K members everywhere are getting involved, and together we are making a positive difference in everything from education to gender equality to health in Haiti, all of which have a foundation in WASH. I cannot encourage you enough to take a few minutes and watch 12-year-old Rosemaíne tell her story, and check out the WASH page on our International website for more information! Much love to all of you, and thank you for your commitment.
The March of Dimes is a nonprofit organization to help improve the health for mothers and their babies by working to prevent birth defects, infant mortality, and premature births. Throughout the year, Circle K members raise money to help prevent premature births. In addition to collecting money, CKI members can participate in the annual March for Babies in April. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is an organization that works to improve the lives of children in over 190 countries. Its main goal is to help children all over the world survive and reach their full potential by providing medicine, clean water, vaccines, and educational opportunities. The Kiwanis family worked in partnership with UNICEF to raise $110 million by 2015 to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus and continues to work alongside the organization today.
Better World Books is an online nonprofit organization that uses books primarily collected through book drives and resells them online. Each time a book is purchased from their website, a book is donated to someone in need. CKI members can get involved by visiting the Book Drive research center on the website and signing up to hold a book drive on their college campus. Students Team up to Fight Against Hunger (STUFH) is a national nonprofit organization whose main goal is to feed the hungry and raise awareness among college students about food insecurity. CKI members can get involved by organizing food drives on their campus, donating money to the local food banks, and visiting the STUFH website and signing up!
St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-powered charity organization whose goal is to fund promising research to find cures to childhood cancers. The organization takes funds raised by their supporters and donates it to carefully selected research grants. CKI members can get involved by participating in the head shaving events, which allow a member to take donations “on their head” and then go bald for the cause.
Circle K International develops college and university students into a global network of responsible citizens and leaders with a lifelong commitment to service.
