All recognized media personnel and photographers are invited to work in the press box located atop the grandstands. Credentials are not required for regularseason matches. The press box is equipped with high-speed wireless and hard-wired internet connections as well as three telephone lines, all of which are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Final box scores, media guides, updated game notes and statistics for both Georgia and its visitng opponents will be available in the press box. Following each game, a recap will be emailed to the media and posted on www.georgiadogs.com, the official website of Georgia athletics. The website will also include a box score and updated statistics. If you would like to be included on the email list, please contact UGA Sports Communications.

COACH & PLAYER INTERVIEWS Throughout the season, the Bulldogs will practice from approximately 2:00-4:30 p.m. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. All practices are open to the media unless otherwise specified. Interviews will generally be conducted following practice. However, other arrangements can be made by contacting UGA Sports Communications. Media desiring to conduct interviews over the phone should make arrangements through the Sports Communications office as well. These will be conducted according to Coach Diaz and the playersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; availability, usually just prior to, or just after, practice sessions.

PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEO Only recognized photographers and videographers have permission to shoot on the courts. All photographers wishing to shoot at practice or at games must check in with UGA Sports Communications before doing so. To shoot practice, please contact UGA Sports Communications. On gamedays, photographers may call, email or check in directly with the press box prior to or during the match. Photographers and videographers will be allowed to shoot from court-level, provided that they follow specific rules set forth by the UGA Sports Communications and UGA Event Management staff.

POSTMACH INTERVIEWS Media in the press box area will be surveyed at the conclusion of the match to determine which players are needed for interviews. All interviews will be conducted on the courts and will be arranged by UGA Sports Communications.

DIRECTIONS From Atlanta: Take I-85 North to Highway 316 (signs to Athens). Continue on 316 approximately 40 miles. Turn right on the Athens Bypass (Loop 10) southbound. Take the Milledge Avenue exit and turn left at the bottom of the ramp. Follow Milledge until you reach Five Points, a five-way intersection. Take a right onto Lumpkin Street. After one traffic light, take a right onto Pinecrest. At the first stop sign, turn left onto Rutherford. The complex is two blocks ahead on the right, next to Foley Field. From Points North: From I-85 South, exit onto State Route 106 at Exit 166. Follow this road to Athens (no turns), where the road becomes North Ave. When you reach downtown Athens, North Ave. becomes Thomas Street and then East Campus Road. Follow East Campus Road for several miles and then turn right onto Carlton Street. Turn left onto Smith Street. Follow behind the Coliseum, then turn left onto Rutherford. The complex is two blocks ahead on the left, next to Foley Field.

2012 OUTLOOK Coming off another NCAA semifinal trip and an SEC championship last year, how would you assess the kind of fall this team had? Manuel Diaz: I think the fall went great. We just had tremendous leadership. We really established new records for our team in our conditioning workouts. Our team this fall was the fittest coming in I’ve ever seen. They blew away all of our previous standards. Every single guy made every single mark that [strength and conditioning coach] Katrin Koch laid out for us, so much so that she continued to come back to me to ask if we needed to change our requirements because that’s how much they were blowing away our workouts. It is just a very focused and hard-working team, and I think looking forward that has got to be our mindset. We are going to work really hard, we know that, and we are going to be a very deep and talented team. We need to go out there and play hard, play together, and have fun. That’s what I’m really looking forward to this spring. You’ve got an interesting situation this season with three seniors, all of whom transferred to Georgia from other institutions last year. Can you talk about Wil, Nacho, and Sadio and what they’ve meant to the program? MD: It is a pretty unique situation. It’s something you definitely don’t plan on, but when you have an opportunity to land kids with the high character that these three guys bring, and the work ethic – we’ve been very fortunate. It’s important that they bring everybody else along with them. That’s been pretty easy, with guys like Hernus [Pieters] and [Nathan] Pasha and the other young guys, they’ve gotten swept up in this environment. I think we’re going to have fun this season within our team philosophy. It’s a group that we’re looking forward to seeing in action as a team and it all starts with our seniors. Wil Spencer just won a championship for the United States at the Master’U tournament in France and he won the back draw at the National Indoors last month. Talk about Wil and what you expect from him in 2012 as he seems to be peaking in his senior year. MD: Wil is becoming more and more of a complete player. He has become a lot more confident. Innately, he is very competitive and very physical. He is an athlete. He has a skill set that you look for in every player. He can run like the wind, he’s strong and very competitive, so for us it’s been more of a process of trying to get him to be more offensive-minded. We’re trying to get him to stay focused on developing a better serve so he can get some more cheap points and have him compete with a more aggressive mindset. Whereas he naturally tries to use his speed in a defensive manner to get you to hit one more ball – he would love

to play forever – we are trying to get him to become capable of being a lethal player in transition and to be able to close some points at the net. It doesn’t have to be every point. But we are trying to make him a more complete player to give him the best opportunity if he wants to try to play professionally after college. What does it mean for the team and the season to know that you will be hosting the NCAA Championships again? MD: It’s funny, because two years ago we had players that were really looking forward to the NCAA’s being here because they knew what it was about. But this year, most of our guys have not played in the tournament here, so while they are looking forward to it, we have to help them mentally prepare for what it’s really like. We are extremely excited, but most of our guys only know about what they’ve heard about it. Will [Reynolds] and Will [Oliver] played here as freshmen in 2010, but that’s it. They will be a great resource and we’ll certainly talk about that. The mindset will have to be handling the pressure of knowing the tournament is in Athens, and all the distractions. It will be imperative that we are focused and able to concentrate on the things that will help us succeed. Your teams have been to five of the last six NCAA final fours. Is this team capable of getting back to that level and getting over the hump to win another championship? MD: I think they have an opportunity to get back there. They’re hungry for more than that. I believe if we continue to sacrifice and become disciplined and continue to work on our weaknesses, we can become a possible contender for a national championship. I believe, though, that our conference is going to be brutal. We possibly could have six out of the top 10 teams in the country. Kentucky is going to have the best team they’ve ever had, Ole Miss is good enough to be in the top four, Florida is going to make a push, Mississippi State will probably have the best team they’ve had in 40 years – I believe they’ll be top 10 or 12 or even better. LSU is much improved from last year. Our conference tournament is going to be brutal, but it will prepare us well. We have to try to make it one at a time and of course our goal is always to win the conference. What this team is going to have going for it is that while we don’t have an established #1 doubles team, we have the capability of having different people playing with different partners. We’ll have more flexibility with our doubles this year, and that might be a strength for us.

Senior • 5-11 • Ponce de Leon, Fla. 2011 FALL (SENIOR) • Went 17-2 in singles on the fall season, including 12-1 vs. ranked opponents to lead the team • Won two matches at the season-opening Kickoff Classic vs. Boise State in Atlanta • Won six matches in a row to capture the 2011 Southern Intercollegiate singles crown on his home courts, including a straight-set victory over third-ranked Eric Quigley of Kentucky in the final • Reached finals of ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa • Won the consolation draw of the USTA/ITA National Indoor in New York City, including a win over teammate Sadio Doumbia in the finals • Helped the United States to the Master’U BNP Paribas title Dec. 11 in Rouen, France, winning all three of his singles matches including rallying from down 4-1 with the US already down 3-0 to France in the finals, sparking the comeback • Ranked No. 6 in singles in the preseason ITA poll

2010-11 (JUNIOR) • Transferred to Georgia for the fall after taking a year off in 2009-10 and playing two seasons at Texas A&M • Reached the semifinals of the season-opening Southern Intercollegiates Sept. 24-27 in Athens • Defeated Maryland’s Tommy Laine 6-4, 6-2 in the consolation draw of the ITA All-America Championships in Tulsa after entering in the qualifying draw • Became the 10th Georgia men’s tennis player to win the singles crown at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional, using straight-set scores of 6-4 and 6-2 to defeat 43rd-ranked Clint Bowles of Florida State in the finals to secure a place in the National Indoor tournament in New York City • Won a match at the National Indoors Nov. 4-7 at the prestigious Billie Jean King Tennis Center • Continued his success in the spring season, going 35-13 in singles and 27-11 in doubles, the team high in both categories • Team-best 17 wins over ranked opponents • Clinched five matches, including Georgia’s 4-3 thriller over Tennessee in the NCAA quarterfinals with a third-set win over JP Smith • Participated in the NCAA singles draw • SEC Indoor singles champion with a win over No. 2 Eric Quigley of UK • Reached as high as No. 12 in singles rankings and finished at No. 14 • Voted to the All-SEC First Team

• Southeast Region Osuna Award recipient for sportsmanship and leadership characteristics • Attained All-America status by virtue of finishing in top 20 of final singles poll • SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll 2008-09 (SOPHOMORE AT TEXAS A&M) • Compiled a 24-12 singles record and finished the season ranked No. 51 • Played five matches at No. 2 and 16 matches at No. 3 • Was ranked as high as No. 8 in the country in January of 2009 • Tallied 10 wins over nationally ranked opponents in leading the Aggies to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 2007-08 (FRESHMAN AT TEXAS A&M) • Joined the team in January 2008 • Compiled a 13-11 overall record in singles playing primarily at the No. 2 and No. 3 lines • Defeated three nationally-ranked opponents during the season • Went 2-4 against Big 12 competition including an upset of No. 34-ranked Ivan Puchkarov of Oklahoma State on March 30 • Was ranked as high as No. 90 nationally in singles and No. 55 nationally in doubles with teammate Austin Krajicek • Clinched the Oklahoma match for the Aggies • Posted the fourth-highest doubles record on the team with a 11-13 overall mark

Manuel Diaz Head Coach 24th Season

In his 23rd season as the Georgia men’s tennis coach and one of only two coaches in program history, former Bulldog Manuel Diaz guided the team to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in six seasons. Following the 2010-11 season, Diaz owns an overall record of 533-114 (.824), good for the ninth most wins among active coaches. The 2011 season saw Diaz and the Bulldogs secure the program’s 26th regular-season and 33rd overall Southeastern Conference title before the run in the NCAA Championships. With a final ranking of No. 5 in 2011, Diaz’s teams have finished in the top-five of the ITA rankings four of the last six years. In 2010, Diaz became just the sixth head coach in Georgia history to notch 500 career wins as the accolades continue to pile up for one of the nation’s top coaches. Manuel Diaz led the Bulldogs to their second consecutive NCAA Championship in 2008. The sixth NCAA team championship title in school history, Diaz has accounted for four of them as the head coach (1999, 2001, 2007, 2008). He was also an assistant coach under Dan Magill on both of the other winning squads (1985, 1987). Diaz is currently one of only two active head coaches to win multiple NCAA championships (USC’s Peter Smith). Diaz coached the Dogs to their third consecutive SEC Championship in 2008, earning what was then the 25th regular-season championship in school history, far and away the most of any conference school. His teams have also claimed a conference-leading seven SEC Tournament championships. Combined, Georgia has claimed 33 SEC championship titles and has doubled up to win both championships in the same year six times. In addition to his four NCAA Championships, Diaz’s teams have reached the NCAA finals seven other times: 1989, 1991, 1993, 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2006. Since 2006, Diaz has coached his team to a remarkable 159-22 record that includes an undefeated 32-0 National Championship season in 2007. Georgia was also 30-1 in 2006, with its lone loss coming in the NCAA Finals. From April 23, 2005 to March 19, 2010, Diaz coached the Dogs to 71 straight wins at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, the second-longest home winning streak in program history. Diaz led Georgia to 11 consecutive national top-five finishes from 1989 to 1999, a feat no other school in the country can match. Diaz’s Bulldogs won the program’s first-ever triple crown of tennis in 2001, as the team won its second national title in three years, while Matias Boeker won the NCAA singles crown and teamed with Travis Parrott for the doubles championship. It was only the third time since 1977 that such a feat had been accomplished. Diaz has led Georgia to 13 regular season SEC titles in his 21 seasons to go along with seven SEC Tournament titles. He was named SEC Coach of the Year in 1989, 1995, 2001, 2006 and 2007. Under Diaz, Georgia has seen 30 different players earn 64 All-America honors. This total ranks tied for second behind Stanford for most All-Americans nationally in that time period. Diaz has also coached six of Georgia’s seven fourtime All-Americans, including: Al Parker (1988-91), Mike Sell (1992-95), Jamie Laschinger (1993-96), Steven Baldas (1995-98), Bo Hodge (2001-04) and most recently John Isner (2004-07).

Under Diaz, Georgia has been among the most nationally-televised collegiate programs. Georgia made history in 2007, when its national championship win in Athens at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex became the first collegiate tennis match ever to be televised live. The production was carried on ESPNU. The Bulldogs have had a player in the NCAA singles finals in 1991, 1992, 1993, 2002 and 2007, and appeared in the team final in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2006, 2007 and 2008, all of which have been televised by ESPN. In 2005, Isner and Antonio Ruiz’s doubles win was televised by The Tennis Channel. Georgia had a player in the team, singles and doubles finals in 2001, but those matches were not televised. Diaz is a respected and honored leader in collegiate tennis including being selected as the Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year in 1995, 2001 and 2007. He was inducted into the State of Georgia Hall of Fame in the fall of 2000. For his outstanding contribution to tennis in his home country of Puerto Rico, Diaz was inducted into the Puerto Rican Tennis Hall of Fame in 1998. Diaz is married to the former Suzanne Rondeau of Toronto, Canada. They have three sons: Manuel III, Eric and Alex. Eric is a redshirt freshman on the men’s tennis team.

Will Glenn

Associate Head Coach • Seventh Season Native Athenian Will Glenn was named associate head coach in July 2008 after serving as an assistant for the Georgia Bulldogs since 2005. In 2010 he was named the ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year as he helped Georgia to the NCAA semifinals for the fourth time in five seasons and an overall record of 21-8, while junior Javier Garrapiz reached the singles championships as an individual for the first time in his career. Since joining the Georgia staff, the Bulldogs have compiled an impressive mark of 159-22 (.878) including winning two NCAA national titles, two USTA/ITA National Team Indoor titles and four SEC crowns. During his tenure, eight Bulldogs have earned 16 All-America honors including Nate Schnugg and Jamie Hunt in 2009, Garrapiz in 2010 and 2011, and Hernus Pieters in 2011. Also, 21 different Bulldogs have nabbed All-SEC honors under Glenn’s guidance. The Athens, Ga., native and Athens Academy product was a four-year letterwinner at Georgia. Glenn cracked the starting lineup in 2003 after walking on in 1998. He posted a career-best 10-3 singles record and a 7-3 doubles mark in 2000-01 and was co-captain of the 2003 squad. Prior to coaching at Georgia, Glenn served as a tennis pro at the Lloyd Neck Racquet Club in Long Island, N.Y., and Dalkieth Tennis Club in Perth, Australia. Glenn earned two degrees from the University of Georgia, receiving his bachelor’s degree in real estate in 2003 and his master’s in human resources and organizational development with a focus on leadership in 2007. He is married to the former Natalie Rittle.

Justin Pickham Volunteer Coach • First Season Two-time Division II Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year Justin Pickham will serve as the University of Georgia men's tennis volunteer coach beginning with the 2011-12 season. Pickham - a native of Australia - joined the Bulldog program this fall after serving as the assistant men's and women's tennis coach at Georgia College in Milledgeville since 2009. Prior to that, Pickham was the assistant for both tennis programs at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton. He has additional coaching experience with Tennis Coaches Australia since 2001 14

and spent six years coaching with the Future Stars Summer Tennis Camps in Long Island, N.Y. Pickham played college tennis at both Abraham Baldwin and GCSU, earning All-America honors in both singles and doubles in 2005-06 and 2008-09 in addition to singles and doubles All-Region honors in 2008-09. He participated in Satellite and Futures events through Australia, China and Sweden, attaining an ATP doubles ranking of 1,554. Pickham received his bachelor's degree in kinesiology (exercise science) from GCSU in 2009 and is expected to receive his master's degree in human performance from the same institution in 2012.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS The 1985 Georgia Bulldogs, led by seniors in their top four positions, were perhaps the most powerful team in school history. The Bulldogs were led by Mikael Pernfors, a native Swede who won a second straight NCAA singles championship with a victory over teammate and roommate George Bezecny. The 1987 Georgia tennis team completed the SEC hat trick by winning the indoor tournament, the conference round robin with a 9-0 record and the league outdoor championship. The lineup for the 1987 national champions consisted of the following players: Philip Johnson at No. 1 singles, Stephen Enochs at No. 2, John Boytim at No. 3 and Trey Carter at No. 4. Rounding out the Bulldogs’ lineup was Mike Morrison at No. 5 singles with T.J. Middleton at No. 6. Freshman Jim Childs saw significant action at No. 6 singles and was a regular at No. 3 doubles.

The 1999 Bulldogs entered the newly formatted 64team tournament as the No. 10 seed, playing host to one of 16 regional tournaments. Through the course of the twoday regional and four-day championship tournaments, the Bulldogs overcame seemingly insurmountable odds, fighting off three team match points to rise to the top. In the team final against top-ranked UCLA, Georgia opened with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 to claim the doubles point. The Bruins retaliated, proving that they would not go quietly. Falling into a tie situation in singles play, junior Joey Pitts swung the balance for the Bulldogs in a three-setter at the No. 4 position.

The 2001 Bulldogs not only etched their name in the annals of Georgia tennis history but also the NCAA record books as being only the second program to win the championship, fail to reach the Round of 16 the following year and then claim another NCAA crown in a span of three years. Stanford is the only other team to accomplish such a feat. Georgia rode a 25-match winning streak through the tournament to capture the program’s fourth national title. In the team final, Georgia clinched the doubles point for the early lead, but lost the first set in three of the singles matches. However, with Georgia leading 3-1, Chad Carlson topped Adam Carey 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 to clinch the match for UGA.

The 2007 Bulldogs completed their dream season by winning the program’s fifth NCAA Team Championships on their home courts. The national crown was the final piece to a perfect puzzle as the squad captured every possible team title during its undefeated run, which also included the ITA Team Indoor National Championship and the SEC Tournament crown. Georgia was so dominant as a team that for the first time in team history, the Bulldogs never allowed an opponent more than two points in a match. Even then, UGA’s opposition gained two points only twice, while suffering a total of 22 shutouts.

In 2008 the Bulldogs became the first squad to win back-to-back NCAA Championship titles since Stanford accomplished that feat in 1998-99. The Bulldogs officially captured the championship by defeating the Texas Longhorns in the finals, 4-2. However, arguably the victory most indicative of the Bulldogs’ talent came in the semifinal round as Georgia topped the undefeated, No. 1-ranked and heavily-favored Virginia Cavaliers, 4-3. Overshadowed by the run to the national championship, the Bulldogs also captured their third consecutive regular-season Southeastern Conference championship with a 10-1 record.

From 1990-98, the SEC Champion was determined by a total aggregate points accumulated at the conclusion of the conference tournament: one full point is awarded for each regular-season conference win, one-half point for wins in the first two rounds of the conference tournament, one-half point for receiving a first-round bye in the conference tournament and one full point for a win in the conference tournament semifinals and finals. For the 1999 season, the same points system was in place with a couple of changes: one full point for first-round bye in the conference tournament and one full point for a win in any round of the conference tournament. DAN MAGILL TENNIS COMPLEX The Dan Magill Tennis Complex has long stood as a beacon of excellence in collegiate tennis. With a total of 16 courts (12 outdoor and four indoor) and a total seating capacity of about 5,000 fans, it is one of the largest on-campus tennis facilities in the country. The ever-evolving complex underwent a $7.5 million development and renovation project in 2002 that included the construction of a brandnew men’s clubhouse. In 1991, the complex received lights thanks to the generous support of Oscar-winning actress and Athens native Kim Basinger. Regarded as one of the best collegiate tennis facilities in America, the complex has been the host of the NCAA Championships a total of 29 times and will be the host site again in 2012. The Dan Magill Tennis Complex is named for one of the greatest Bulldogs, Georgia legend Dan Magill. Regarded as one of the most influential men in the history of collegiate tennis, Magill served as Georgia’s head tennis coach for 34 years. Magill led the Bulldogs to two National Championships (1985 and 1987). He is still a very active member of the collegiate tennis community, serving as curator and director of the ITA Men’s Collegiate Hall of Fame, which also makes its home at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Magill has devoted his entire life to the University of Georgia and to the development of collegiate tennis. He officially retired from the University of Georgia athletic department in September of 1995, ending a 59-year association that began when he served as a batboy for the baseball team in the 1930s. Over the years, Magill filled a variety of roles ranging from publicist, administrator, coach and spinner of yarns. He had no peer as an innovator and promoter, and is known nationally for building over time the country’s finest collegiate tennis facility, one that now bears his name. At the time of his retirement, he was an assistant athletic director and director of tennis. His contributions to the University, the athletic association, and perhaps most of all to the Georgia people have been great. Much to the delight of all those who know him or of him, Magill has shared some of his knowledge and experiences in four books: “Bull-Doggerel”, “Match Pointers”, “The Pick of Dan Magill’s Columns” and his latest work, “High Port, Haul Ass”, a collection of memoirs from his time in the Marine Corps during World War II. Today, he remains active around town and spends time at the ITA Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame, located on campus.

Magill was responsible for bringing the NCAA men’s tennis championships to Athens over 20 times including 13 in a row from 1977-89. He was instrumental in the move to place the Hall of Fame here as well. In his brilliant 34-year tenure as head coach of the Bulldogs, Magill posted an amazing record of 706-183 (.794), which makes him the all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division I history. Magill’s teams won a record 13 SEC outdoor championships and eight indoor league titles, while five of his players won national collegiate individual titles. His 1985 and 1987 teams captured the NCAA Championship. The 1985 team performed the unmatched “hat trick” — they ranked No. 1 in the final national team rankings, No. 1 in individual singles (Mikael Pernfors) and No. 1 in doubles (Pernfors and Allen Miller). He had 15 players earn AllAmerican honors 23 times. Magill has been named the Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year (1980) and earned the prestigious J.D. Morgan Award (1990), the two highest honors a college coach can receive. While in college and managing Georgia’s tennis courts in the summer, Magill originated the Crackerland Championships, which is still one of the South’s largest sectional tournaments. He also instituted the State Collegiate Championships, the Southern Collegiate Championships and SEC Coaches Indoors. Magill is chairman of the ITA Hall of Fame Committee and is curator of the ITA Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame. In 1996, Magill was inducted into the Circle of Honor, the Georgia Athletic Association’s Hall of Fame, and in the fall of 1999, the Sanford Stadium press box was dedicated in his honor. He continued to serve the athletic association as the director of men’s and women’s tennis as well as assistant athletic director for public relations and the Georgia Bulldog clubs. During his long tenure with the University, he has also wore the hat of sports information director for 27 years and 25 years as secretary of the Georgia Bulldog Club, a booster organization he founded in 1953. Even with all of his work devoted to tennis, Magill has maintained his game as well. Over the years, he has won numerous titles at the Southern Hardcourts, Southern Closed Clay and Southern Indoor events. Magill is married to the former Rosemary Reynaud of New Orleans, and they have three children: Dr. Ham Magill, Mrs. William Brown and Mrs. Stephen Sloan.
