LIZ MURPHEY COLLEGIATE CLASSIC The list of golfers who have competed collegiately in the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic reads like a “Who’s Who” of women’s golf, including LPGA Hall of Famers Beth Daniel, Betsy King and Julie Inkster. The LMCC is one of the oldest continuous sporting events in all of women’s intercollegiate athletics. Its 45th edition will be held April 7-9, 2017. The event began humbly in 1973 as the Georgia Invitational before becoming the Women’s Southern Intercollegiate Championships from 1977-94. In 1995, the tourney was renamed in honor of Liz Murphey, UGA’s Hall of Fame golf coach and long-time Senior Woman Administrator. Georgia has enjoyed much success protecting its home turf. The Bulldogs have won 13 team titles and produced 11 medalists. Georgia ruled play during the late-1990s in record-breaking fashion. Reilley Rankin fired a tourney record 11-under in 1998. The following year, UGA posted what was then a team record of 4-under to win by a whopping 44 strokes.
In 2014, the Liz Murphey altered its schedule to feature stroke play and match play in advance of a similar format change for the 2015 NCAA Championships. In 2016, many of the nation’s premier programs again flocked to Athens for the LMCC. UCLA’s Louise Ridderstrom captured medalist honors by shooting 4-under 68 in Friday’s stroke play qualifying, a performance that also led the Bruins to the top seed entering match play. UCLA then defeated Denver, Georgia and Alabama en route to capturing the LMCC team title for the first time ever. LIZ MURPHEY TRIBUTE Liz Murphey was one of the leading figures in the evolution and development of women’s intercollegiate athletics both on the national level and at the University of Georgia. A Newnan, Ga., native, Murphey was not only an outstanding women’s golf coach but also led the overall Lady Bulldog women’s sports program to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s as its senior woman administrator. She died November 23, 2005, following a short illness. “Liz was certainly one of the national pioneers in women’s athletics and one that provided the real foundation for the program here at Georgia,” said former UGA Director of Athletics Vince Dooley. “Her work at Georgia was recognized across the country both as an administrator and golf coach.” Murphey joined the university faculty in 1967 as an assistant professor of physical education and women’s golf coach. She coordinated the women’s club sports program until being named assistant athletic director for women’s sports in 1978. When UGA officially added women’s golf as an intercollegiate sport in the fall of 1978, Murphey already had a solid foundation in place. She led the Lady Bulldogs to 21 team and 18 individual titles from 1978-86.
Under Murphey, Georgia finished in the top 10 at each national championship from 1979-83, including second at the 1981 AIAWs and third at the 1983 NCAAs. Additionally, Terri Moody and Cindy Schreyer won individual national titles in 1981 and 1984, respectively. Murphey was the first-ever NGCA National Coach of the Year in 1984, and she was a charter member of that organization’s Hall of Fame. Two of her most prestigious honors were the 1996 Rolex Meritorious Service Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Collegiate Women’s Athletic Adminstators in 2003. Under her leadership, Georgia won eight of the 14 SEC women’s all-sports awards, secured four national team championships and captured an additional 31 individual national titles. Murphey retired from the University in May 1996. She was inducted into the UGA Athletic Association’s Circle of Honor – the school’s highest tribute paid to former athletes or coaches – in 2001. Murphey’s legacy lives on. For more than four decades, Georgia has hosted the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, appropriately one of the nation’s oldest women’s collegiate athletic events in any sport.
Liz’s Legacy
GOLF
Liz Murphey’s fingerprints remain on UGA women’s athletics long after she retire. Murphey hired current Georgia women’s head coaches Jack Bauerle (swimming and diving) and Jeff Wallace (tennis), as well as the retired Andy Landers (basketball) and Suzanne Yoculan (gymnastics). That quartet has combined to lead 19 teams to NCAA Championships and 44 squads to SEC Championships in their respective sports. She also brought in Beans Kelly as her assistant coach in 1986 and handed the reins to the golf program over shortly thereafter. Kelly led Georgia to eight SEC titles and eight top-10 finishes at the NCAAs.

Hosting the 1981 AIAW Nationals was perhaps Liz Murphey’s finest hour as a coach and administrator. Terri Moody (upper right) captured the first-ever national title in UGA women’s athletics history and the Lady Bulldogs finished second in the team field (right).

GOLF GEORGIA
2016-17 NOTEBOOK BULLDOGS HAVE THEIR EYES ON THE PRIZE(S) Georgia Golf is accustomed to winning. “We’re going to get used to playing with us to win. We’re just going to play well
Over the past three-plus decades, the Bulldogs have done so at a strong and steady pace, with 83 team and 73 individual titles from 1979-2015. A year ago, a young bunch of Bulldogs took those standards to a different level, winning nine titles. This fall, the Bulldogs hope to not only replicate last season’s performances but go even further in postseason play. As they attempt to do so, the process will probably be slightly different. A year ago, Georgia vaulted from No. 27 in the preseason rankings to spend almost all of October through May ranked among the nation’s top-5 teams. This year, the Bulldogs enter the campaign ranked among most experts’ short list of national championship contenders. Pardon the overutilized analogy, but the team has gone from being the hunter to the hunted.
Rinko Mitsunaga participated in her second U.S. Women’s Open during the summer of 2016.

a bulls eye on our back but, hey, it’s much better to be there than trying to sneak around and surprise somebody,” head coach Josh Brewer said. Leading the way for the Bulldogs is a trio of All-Americans – Bailey Tardy (first-team WGCA & Golfweek), Harang Lee (first-team Golfweek/second-team WGCA) and Jillian Hollis (third-team Golfweek/honorable mention WGCA). This season marks just the second time in program history that the Georgia roster sported three returning All-America performers. Another accolade-earning Bulldog is back in the fold as well. Sophomore Rinko Mitsunaga, one of two golfers to play in every event a year ago, was named to the All-SEC Freshman team last spring. Three more returning letterwinners provide Brewer with winning options. Senior Mary Ellen Shuman was in the lineup for Georgia’s victory at the NCAA Bryan Regional last spring. Senior Sammi Lee provided a trio of counting rounds in the Bulldogs’ win at the Mountain View Collegiate. Junior Isabella Skinner helped Georgia to a share of the Windy City Collegiate title last fall. Rounding out the Bulldogs’ roster is talented freshman Gabriela Coello, a top-25 national recruit who reached match play at both the 2014 and 2015 U.S. Girls’ Juniors. “We’ve worked hard the past few years in recruiting to have the depth that we have now,” Brewer said. “It doesn’t matter to us who is playing 3, 4 or 5, we have faith in them. Sometimes, qualifying is harder than a tournament. I think that keeps them motivated. Hopefully, it will lead to something special this year.” Brewer has not been bashful about his expectations for Georgia Golf since arriving on campus in the summer of 2012. A year ago, the Bulldogs produced a bountiful haul of victories. Georgia earned nine titles during 2015-16 – five team and four individual, including a sweep of the NCAA Bryan Regional. Now, Brewer’s Bulldogs have their sights set on even more significant hardware. “We’ve worked for five years to get to this point, where we start the season as one of the preseason favorites in the country,” Brewer stated. “Credit to the eight players on this team who have worked so hard to do that. Now, we’ll see how mature we are. We’re showing up and people expect
and hopefully have a chance to win. We do have a target on our back and it will be a great learning experience for us. It’s still a young lineup with three sophomores, a freshman and a junior.”
A PRODUCTIVE SUMMER
Following an outstanding 2015-16 season, Georgia’s golfers did little resting on their laurels during the summer. The Bulldogs turned in stellar individual results from coast-to-coast and beyond. Most notably, both Rinko Mitsunaga and Bailey Tardy qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open. Tardy won an qualifier at Butler Country Club outside Pittsburgh on the Monday before the NCAA Championships in May. Mitsunaga punched her ticket on June 3 by shooting 6-under 138 at Sugar Mill Country Club in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. The 2016 event represented the second Open appearance for each golfer. Tardy played in women’s golf’s pinnacle event in 2014, while Mitsunaga did so in 2012 as a 15 year old. Mitsunaga, Tardy and Isabella Skinner all qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur, where each reached the match play bracket. Harang Lee returned to Spain and promptly finished as runner-up at the Spanish Amateur, her fifth top-10 and seventh top-20 finish in the last seven years. Lee also reached match play at the British Am and helped Spain to a runner-up showing in the European Team Championships. Jillian Hollis won the 116th Women’s Western Golf Association Amateur Championship at the Dayton Country Club. All six of Hollis’ matches there went the distance. All told, she played 164 holes of golf over six days. That performance helped Hollis secure an exemption into the LPGA’s Marathon Classic presented by Owens Corning and O-I in Sylvania, Ohio. Gabriela Coello wrapped up her junior career with a runner-up finish at the E-Z-Go Vaughn Taylor Championship in July. She also reached match play at the Women’s Southern Am, where she lost to current teammate Rinko Mitsunaga. Seniors Sammi Lee and Mary Ellen Shuman were limited on the golf course due to summer internships. Shuman did reach match play at the Western Am; however Lee did not compete while she was in New York for her internship with Barclay’s. Lee’s performance resulted in her accepting a full-time position with the corporation following graduation.

HEAD COACH
JOSH BREWER 5th season at the University of Georgia
Josh Brewer’s experiences with collegiate athletics had a remarkable storybook ending... or so he thought. As a senior at Indiana, Brewer birdied the final two holes to finish second individually and help the Hoosiers secure a one-stroke victory at the 1998 Big Ten Championships. While Brewer did not know so at the time, the event was the final tournament in both his career and that of legendary coach Sam Carmichael. “That was the last year that a conference championship didn’t earn you an automatic bid to the NCAAs,” Brewer said. “We were ‘on the bubble’ and thought winning the Big Tens would get us in, but it didn’t. Obviously, I was disappointed at the time, but to look back at it now, it was a pretty neat way to wrap up my career as a college golfer.” After winning the 1998 Indiana State Amateur crown that summer, Brewer quickly moved into the business world. He accepted a position as a financial advisor with Linsco/Private Ledger in Indianapolis. Three falls later, Mike Mayer, who moved from assistant to head coach of the IU men’s team after Carmichael retired, asked him to return to campus to share his experiences in golf and school and the transition to professional life with the current team. “I just really enjoyed the interaction with the student-athletes,” Brewer said. “On the way home, my wife Selena said she hadn’t seen me that happy in a while. She suggested that college coaching might be something I should explore.” Chalk one up for the wife.

2015-16 SEASON NOTEBOOK RECORD-SETTING DOGS RETURN TO SPOTLIGHT The Georgia women’s golf team added a long and thorough chapter to the program’s storied history during the 2015-16 season. The Bulldogs ranked among the nation’s top-5 teams from September through May and shattered team and individuals records along the way. The Bulldogs won nine total titles during the campaign – five team and four individual. That equaled the third-most in Georgia history and represented the most since earning 10 trophies en route to an NCAA runner-up finish in 1998-99. The five team victories matched the thirdmost in Georgia’s record books, while the four individual crowns tied the program’s second-most ever. The Bulldogs finished with a 289.40 average, which bettered the previous school record of 294.50 in 2006-07 by more than five strokes per round. Georgia posted par-or-better team scores in seven of its 12 tourneys. By comparison, the Bulldogs did so six times during their first 35 seasons – and 413 tournaments – since women’s golf became an intercollegiate sport in 1979. In the process, the Bulldogs logged four of the five best team scores in school history and their lowest single round ever, a 13-under 275 on the second day of the Mason Rudolph Championship. Individually, Bailey Tardy (72.08), Jillian Hollis (72.45) and Harang Lee (72.49) produced stroke averages that rank No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, among Georgia’s all-time top-10 efforts. Tardy broke the school record for best tournament score with a 12-under 204 en route to winning the Windy City Collegiate. Hollis later came within a stroke of that mark during her victory at the Mountain View Collegiate. ACCOLADES ROLL IN FOR BULLDOGS BaileyTardy, Harang Lee and Jillian Hollis were named All-America and All-SEC for their performances during the season, while Rinko Mitsunaga was named to the SEC’s All-Freshman team. Tardy was tabbed SEC Freshman of the Year, first-team All-America by both the Women’s Golf Coaches Association and Golfweek, first-team All-SEC and SEC AllFreshman. She finished the year ranked among the nation’s top-10 individuals by both Golfweek (No. 5) and Golfstat (No. 9). Lee was named first-team All-America by Golfweek and second-team by the WGCA. She also earned first-team All-SEC recognition and finished the year ranked No. 10 individually by Golfweek.

Hollis was a third-team All-America honoree by Golfweek and an honorable mention selection by the WGCA. She also was voted second-team All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman. BULLDOGS SWEEP REGIONAL TITLES Georgia surged to the lead early in the final round and maintained a comfortable edge the rest of the afternoon en route to winning the NCAA Bryan Regional at Traditions Golf Club on May 7. BaileyTardy completed the sweep of the team and individual titles for Georgia, tying for medalist honors with UCLA’s Bronte Law at 7-under 209. Georgia wrapped up play at 6-under 858, a school record for NCAA Regional and Championship competition and the fourthbest score in program history overall. “After is was over, it was very fun, but the process of getting there was pretty stressful,” head coach Josh Brewer said. “When you sign the scorecards and they call your name as champions, you can’t ask for much more.” Rinko Mitsunaga played a key role in Georgia’s ascent to on the team leaderboard. She fired a 4-under 68 to pace the Bulldogs to a 1-over 289 on Sunday. The victory was Georgia’s first Regional title since 1999 and the first Regional individual crown since Reilley Rankin in 1998. WORST FALL SCORE A GOOD INDICATOR Georgia’s worst round of the fall, at least statistically speaking, might have been its most impressive effort. The Bulldogs traveled to the Stanford Intercollegiate without Bailey Tardy, who was recovering from a concussion.
Georgia was tied for fourth behind Stanford, UCLA and Southern Cal following the first 36 holes when things got worse. Jillian Hollis was forced to withdraw from the final round due to an illness, leaving the Bulldogs in a play-four, count-four scoring situation. Georgia shot 8-over 292 – its worst relation-to-par score in 14 rounds during the fall – but still impressed Josh Brewer. “It’s weird. This was our worst team finish of the fall, but it may have been our most important tournament so far,” Brewer said after the final round. “This week showed us a great deal about our team. I couldn’t be prouder of how everyone performed in tough circumstances, first with Bailey not traveling and then having Jillian out today.” BRICK NAMED GEORGIA’S TOP “PEACH” Senior Sylvie Brick was named “Peach of an Athlete” by the Atlanta Area Council of the Boy Scouts at its annual Role Model Banquet. The banquet honors a professional individual, a professional athlete and 10 college athletes. Brick was the overall female “Peach of an Athlete.” Brick was president of UGA’s studentathlete advisory committee (SAAC) for the 2015-16 school year and has spearheaded several initiatives by that organization. She also was the chosen to represent SEC female student-athletes in all sports at the 2015 NCAA Leadership Forum. “Sylvie has used her opportunities as a UGA student-athlete to full benefit,” Josh Brewer said. “She embraced it and ran with it. She came here with a mission and a goal to make sure she was prepared for life after college, and she’s done just that.”

BEANS KELLY (1985-00)
Never labeled as predictable, Beans Kelly resigned in 2000 while seemingly on top of the college golf world. Under her tutelage, the Lady Bulldogs won 43 team and 33 individual titles, including Vicki Goetze’s 1992 NCAA title; captured seven SEC crowns; and posted eight NCAA top-10 finishes. She was named National Coach of the Year in 1998 and in 2000 became the youngest coach inducted into the NGCA Hall of Fame.
TODD McCORKLE (2000-07) Todd McCorkle arrived in Athens just months after leading Arizona to the national championship. The next spring, McCorkle coached Georgia to the program’s first-ever NCAA team title and became just the second coach in Division I history to win back-to-back NCAA championships at two schools. McCorkle also led the Bulldogs to two SEC titles and seven of his Bulldog golfers combined to earn 11 AllAmerica certificates. KELLEY HESTER (2007-12)
Kelley Hester returned to her alma mater in June 2007 and furthered the storied tradition of Georgia Golf. She led the Bulldogs to a pair of top-20 finishes in her five campaigns in Athens. Individually, Marta Silva Zamora blossomed under Hester’s tutelage to become the consensus National Player of the Year in 2011 and five different Bulldogs combined to secure eight AllAmerica certificates during Hester’s tenure.

BREWER’S FIRST WIN AT UGA
Josh Brewer’s first victory as Georgia’s head coach was memorable indeed, a sweep of the team and individual titles at the 2013 FSU Match-Up Tournament. Rocio Sanchez Lobato opened the tournament with a 6-under 66 to grab a lead she never relinquished. Emilie Burger closed with a key 4-under 68 as Georgia shot 1-under 287 to secure a four-shot victory over No. 6 Oklahoma.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 1981
Terri Moody moved atop the leaderboard midway through the second round of the 1981 AIAW Nationals at the UGA Golf Course and held off a late charge from Miami’s Patti Rizzo to win Georgia’s first-ever individual national title by a female studentathlete in any sport. Moody was among a group of five golfers tied for second following an opening-round 73, but grabbed a one-stroke lead over Rizzo with a 72 on her second loop. Moody, an Athens native who was the first female studentathlete to receive a full athletic scholarship from UGA, maintained that advantage when she TERRI MOODY and Rizzo both carded third1981 AIAW Medalist round 75s. On the final day, Rizzo’s 75 knotted the score and forced a three-hole playoff. Moody completed the trio of holes at 1-under while Rizzo was 1-over.
1984
Cindy Schreyer claimed a dramatic win at the 1984 NCAA Championships, winning a threehole playoff with SMU’s Martha Foyer and Miami’s Michele Bertroitti with a birdie at No. 12. Schreyer had battled Arizona State’s Heather Farr through most of the tournament. Farr carded an opening-round score of 71 at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Tarpon Springs, Fla. Schreyer, who was among seven golfers tied for eighth after the first day, rebounded to break the course record and knot herself with Farr on the leaderboard with a second-round 70. CINDY SCHREYER Farr regained a one-shot lead 1984 NCAA Medalist following the third round. While Schreyer shot 76 in the final round, Foyer and Berteotti carded 75s to force the playoff. Farr slipped to fourth with a 79, two strokes off the playoff-forcing score of 297.
1992
Vicki Goetze turned in one of the most impressive single rounds in the history of women’s collegiate golf en route to capturing top individual honors at the 1992 NCAA Championships on Arizona State University’s Karsten Golf Course. Goetze and Stanford’s Audrey Wooding led following firstround, 3-under 69s; however, Annika Sorenstam of Arizona grabbed a three-shot advantage with a second-round 68. Sorenstam maintained that same margin after both she and Goetze shot 72s on the third day. Goetze then torched the course with a 7-under 65 on the fourth day to top Sorenstam by three. VICKI GOETZE Goetze’s effort still remains as 1992 NCAA Medalist both the low single-round score in NCAA Championships history (though four other golfers have equaled the mark) and the Bulldogs’ low loop all time as well.
2001
The 2001 Bulldogs utilized three days of consistent golf to place themselves in contention and then used a spectacular final-round effort to win UGA’s first-ever national title in women’s golf. Georgia shot 298 and was among three teams tied for fourth after the opening day but climbed to sole possession of third after a second-round 295. The Bulldogs improved to 293 in the third round but still trailed top-ranked Duke by four entering the final 18 holes. Georgia seized contol early in the fourth round, tying the Blue Devils by No. 5 and then surging to a three-shot lead at No. 6. Duke never got closer than two shots thereafter. Georgia clinched the title with steely resolve. After a trio of bogeys at No. 16, UGA played the par-5 No. 17 at 3-under to all but seal the national title. The Bulldogs’ fourth-round score of 290 was six shots better than any other team in the field, as Reilley Rankin and Summer Sirmons carded a pair of 72s, while Laura Henderson and Angela Jerman both shot 73. All four of those Bulldogs finished among the top 18 individuals, with Rankin tying for 10th at 292, Henderson and Jerman both tying for 13th at 294 and Sirmons tied for 18th at 296.
