LIZ MURPHEY COLLEGIATE CLASSIC The list of golfers who have competed collegiately in the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic reads like a “Who’s Who” of women’s golf, including LPGA Hall of Famers Beth Daniel, Betsy King and Julie Inkster. The LMCC is one of the oldest continuous sporting events in all of women’s intercollegiate athletics. Its 46th edition will be held April 13-15, 2018. The event began humbly in 1973 as the Georgia Invitational before becoming the Women’s Southern Intercollegiate Championships from 1977-94. In 1995, the tourney was renamed in honor of Liz Murphey, UGA’s Hall of Fame golf coach and long-time Senior Woman Administrator. Georgia has enjoyed much success protecting its home turf. The Bulldogs have won 14 team titles and produced 12 medalists.

In 2014, the Liz Murphey altered its format to feature stroke play and match play in advance of a similar change for the 2015 NCAA Championships. Seven teams from the last three Liz Murpheys have gone on to reach match play at the NCAAs later that season. LIZ MURPHEY TRIBUTE A TRUE PIONEER IN WOMEN’S ATHLETICS Liz Murphey was one of the leading figures in the evolution and development of women’s intercollegiate athletics both on the national level and at the University of Georgia. A Newnan, Ga., native, Murphey was not only an outstanding women’s golf coach but also led the overall Lady Bulldog women’s sports program to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s as its senior woman administrator. She died November 23, 2005, following a short illness. “Liz was certainly one of the national pioneers in women’s athletics and one that provided the real foundation for the program here at Georgia,” said former UGA Director of Athletics Vince Dooley. “Her work at Georgia was recognized across the country both as an administrator and golf coach.” Murphey joined the university faculty in 1967 as an assistant professor of physical education and women’s golf coach. She coordinated the women’s club sports program until being named assistant athletic director for women’s sports in 1978. When UGA officially added women’s golf as an intercollegiate sport in the fall of 1978, Murphey already had a solid foundation in place. She led the Lady Bulldogs to 21 team and 18 individual titles from 1978-86.

Under Murphey, Georgia finished in the top 10 at each national championship from 1979-83, including second at the 1981 AIAWs and third at the 1983 NCAAs. Additionally, Terri Moody and Cindy Schreyer won individual national titles in 1981 and 1984, respectively. Murphey was the first-ever NGCA National Coach of the Year in 1984, and she was a charter member of that organization’s Hall of Fame. Two of her most prestigious honors were the 1996 Rolex Meritorious Service Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Collegiate Women’s Athletic Adminstators in 2003. Under her leadership, Georgia won eight of the 14 SEC women’s all-sports awards, secured four national team championships and captured an additional 31 individual national titles. Murphey retired from the University in May 1996. She was inducted into the UGA Athletic Association’s Circle of Honor – the school’s highest tribute paid to former athletes or coaches – in 2001. Murphey’s legacy lives on. For more than four decades, Georgia has hosted the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, appropriately one of the nation’s oldest women’s collegiate athletic events in any sport.

Liz’s Legacy

Liz Murphey’s fingerprints remain on UGA women’s athletics long after she retire. Murphey hired current Georgia women’s head coaches Jack Bauerle (swimming and diving) and Jeff Wallace (tennis), as well as the retired Andy Landers (basketball) and Suzanne Yoculan (gymnastics). That quartet has combined to lead 19 teams to NCAA Championships and 44 squads to SEC Championships in their respective sports. She also brought in Beans Kelly as her assistant coach in 1986 and handed the reins to the golf program over shortly thereafter. Kelly led Georgia to eight SEC titles and eight top-10 finishes at the NCAAs. PUTTING UGA ON THE MAP

Hosting the 1981 AIAW Nationals was perhaps Liz Murphey’s finest hour as a coach and administrator. Terri Moody (upper right) captured the first-ever national title in UGA women’s athletics history and the Lady Bulldogs finished second in the team field (right).

2017-18 NOTEBOOK DEEP DOGS SET TO BATTLE ON NATIONAL STAGE Yang was tabbed second-team All-USA Josh Brewer has never shied away from “We expect to have eight players who be-

competition. During Brewer’s first five seasons in Athens, Georgia has faced schedules ranked among the nation’s 10 most difficult three times. A year ago, the Bulldogs’ strength of schedule was ranked No. 6 in Golfweek’s Sagarin Index. That followed Georgia playing the No. 7 and No. 10 ranked SOS’s in 2012-13 and 2013-14, respectively, not to mention the 15th-toughest slate in 2014-15. Once again, the Bulldogs are expected to face one of the most challenging slates in the country this season. “I expect it to be a top-10 schedule in the country again,” Brewer said. “That’s how we recruit. We tell players they’re going to play against the best amateurs in the world. We’re lucky enough to have a few of those. That’s one of the reasons why we had four All-Americans last year, because of the schedule we played. It is important to have our student-athletes win those types of honors. We have to formulate a schedule that gives them that opportunity.” Brewer is excited about taking on that slate considering Georgia’s deep and talented eight-golfer roster. Two current Bulldogs – Rinko Mitsunaga and Bailey Tardy – have participated in the U.S. Women’s Open a combined five times. Four more – Stephanie Carras, Gabriela Coello, Jillian Hollis and Isabella Skinner – have qualified for USGA Girls’ and/or Women’s Amateur Championships. Another – Paula Neira Garcia – is Spain’s reigning amateur champion. And the eighth – Elisa Yang – is a three-time medalist at the Georgia prep state championships and two-time state golfer of the year.

lieve they can and want to play every week for us,” Brewer said. “I think you’re going to see us continue to have great depth. It should be exciting for us as coaches in qualifying. It may make it a little bit stressful for the players at times. But to win at the end of the year, you need that depth. “There are going to be times when certain individuals aren’t going to be in the lineup,” Brewer continued. “We have three individuals who have played in just about every event since they’ve been at Georgia, but still they know they have to work on their game because there are talented people waiting to take their spot every week.” The aforementioned three are returning All-Americans Hollis, Mitsunaga and Tardy. In each of their first two seasons, Hollis and Tardy have produced scoring averages that rank among the top-10 in the programs history, while Mitsunaga has notched a pair of top-25 marks as outlined below.

HOME GROWN BULLDOGS

Half of the Bulldogs’ 2017-18 roster is from Georgia as Rinko Mitsunaga is from Roswell, Bailey Tardy hails from Peachtree Corners, Isabella Skinner is a native of Cumming and Elisa Yang is from Norcross.

BURKE JOINS GEORGIA STAFF

Mimi Burke joined the Georgia Golf family over the summer as assistant coach. Burke, a former standout golfer at Appalachian State, spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Purdue. “I’m excited to add Mimi to our staff,” Josh Brewer said. “She has experience learning under Devon (Brouse), a two-time hall-offamer, at Purdue. We look forward to the knowledge she will add to our program.”

Hollis, Mitsunaga and Tardy have helped Georgia capture nine team titles, as well as winning individually a combined five times. Skinner, the Bulldogs’ lone senior, has made the most of her playing opportunities during her first three seasons, posting five top-20 finishes in 14 career starts. Coello, Georgia’s only sophomore, posted a solid 76.13 average last season. That tally included a season-low 2-under 70 at the Annika Intercollegiate that helped the Bulldogs post the third-best single round in school history (10-under 278). Georgia’s three freshmen all sport impressive credentials. Carras qualified for both the U.S. Girls’ and Women’s Amateurs in 2017, a year after she also competed in the 2016 U.S. Women’s Am. Neira Garcia pushed herself into the top100 of the World Amateur Golf Rankings in August after a summer that included a nine-shot victory in the Spanish Amateur. Bailey Tardy (left) and Paula Neira Garcia (right) headlined a long list of strong summer performances for Georgia golfers. Tardy qualified for her third U.S. Women’s Open, while Neira Garcia won the Spanish Amateur by nine strokes.

by USA Today last spring after winning her third-straight Georgia High School Association individual state title.

Georgia’s connection to Spain grows this season as freshman Paula Neira Garcia continues a streak that dates back more than a decade to 2006 of Georgia’s roster sporting at least one member of the Spanish national team. That stretch includes Carolina Andrade, an All-SEC performer, from 2006-10; Marta Silva Zamora, a four-time All-American who was named 2011 National & SEC Golfer of the Year, from 2008-12; Rocio Sanchez Lobato, another All-SEC performer, from 2011-15; and Harang Lee, a two-time All-SEC and All-America honoree, from 2013-17.

2016-17 SEASON NOTEBOOK GEORGIA BOASTS TOP-10 RANKING, QUARTET OF ALL-AMERICANS The Georgia women’s golf team again was one of the nation’s top-ranked squads from the beginning of the fall campaign through the finish of the spring season. In the end, the Bulldogs were No. 8 and No. 9 in the Golfweek and Golfstat national team rankings, respectively. In addition, Jillian Hollis, Harang Lee, Bailey Tardy and Rinko Mitsunaga were among the top-50 individuals in one or both ledgers. Unfortunately, Georgia finished seventh in the NCAA Athens Regional, leaving the Bulldogs three shots and one place on the team leaderboard shy of advancing to the NCAA Championships. “It’s definitely a frustrating way to end the season,” head coach Josh Brewer said. “We’re not going to let three rounds define us, though. It may be that way in the record books, but this core group has won nine times over the past two years. Unfortunately, it wasn’t our week. We’ve got to learn from it as a program and get better.” Georgia played solid golf throughout the lineup all three days; however, the Bulldogs posted just two par-or-better individual rounds during the Regional. All told, 13 of Georgia’s 15 individual scores fell between 73-77.

DOGS CAPTURE TITLES

Georgia captured five tournament championships during the 2016-17. The Bulldogs swept top team and individual honors at both the Cardinal Kickoff and the Liz Murphey Collegiate and also won the Windy City Collegiate team title. Harang Lee opened a stellar senior season by being co-medalist at the Cardinal Kickoff. Jillian Hollis won the stroke play qualifying title at the Liz Murphey Collegiate, and then helped Georgia also secure the match play crown in the 45th annual event at the UGA Golf Course.

ACCOLADES ROLL IN FOR UGA

A quartet Bulldogs earned postseason accolades, with Georgia producing a nation-leading four All-Americans. Jillian Hollis, Harang Lee and Bailey Tardy all were named both All-SEC and All-America. In addition, Rinko Mitsunaga secured All-America accolades. Hollis was tabbed first-team All-SEC by league coaches, while Lee and Tardy earned second-team recognition. The same three golfers were tabbed honorable mention All-America by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association.

Golfweek named Hollis, Lee, Tardy and Mitsunaga as All-Americans. Hollis was named to the second team, Lee was included on the third team and Mitsunaga and Tardy were both featured on the honorable mention ledger. Georgia was the nation’s only team with four Golfweek All-Americans. “This is a great honor for these four and a great honor for our program,” Josh Brewer said. “They put in the hard work throughout the year, and they all deserve it. I think it speaks to the depth we’ve created and that they’ve created here at Georgia. This is a very special recognition.” This also marks the first time four Bulldogs have earned All-America recognition in a single season. Previously, three Georgia golfers were named All-America in 1988, 1991, 1998, 2006 and 2016. Hollis sported a team-best 72.12 stroke average and notched six top-10 and seven top-20 finishes in 10 tournaments. Lee recorded five top-20 finishes in eight events, including a runner-up performance at the SEC Championships. Mitsunaga was a top-20 finisher at five of nine events, with top-10 efforts at the Cardinal Kickoff and the Liz Murphey. Tardy led the team with eight top-20 finishes in 10 tournaments. She was also stellar in two match play events, posting a combined 6-0 record at the Gifford Great 8 and the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic.

SCHOOL RECORD SMASHED

The 2016-17 Bulldogs broke the school record for tournament score the last fall. Georgia shot 19-under at the Annika Intercollegiate Presented by 3M to better the existing mark by five strokes. The previous record was a 14-under effort at the 2009 Cougar Classic.

SHUMAN A STRONG SENIOR

Mary Ellen Shuman participated in 16 of 35 events Georgia played in her first three seasons in Athens. She played in all 10 tournaments during her final campaign with the Bulldogs. Shuman was the Bulldogs’ top individual finisher at the Stanford Intercollegiate where she tied for 16th. During the spring, she shot 5-over at the Bryan National, garnered two key wins in match play in the Liz Murphey and notched a pair of counting rounds at the SECs. The St. Simons Island, Ga. native finished the season with a 76.27 average, more than two full strokes per round better than her career average (78.74) entering the 2016-17 season. Shuman’s game seemed to kick into another gear at the Annika Intercollegiate. After notching one par-or-better tally in 46 career loops, Shuman did so in back-toback rounds at the Annika.

LIZ MURPHEY (1978-85)

Liz Murphey, a leader in the evolution of women’s intercollegiate athletics, had been at UGA for a decade when the school named women’s golf an intercollegiate sport. She led Georgia top-10 finishes at each national championship from 1979-83 and coached Terri Moody and Cindy Schreyer to individual national titles. Murphey also served as SWA for 18 years and guided UGA women’s athletics to six SEC All-Sports titles from 1984-94.

BEANS KELLY (1985-00)

Never labeled as predictable, Beans Kelly resigned in 2000 while seemingly on top of the college golf world. Under her tutelage, the Lady Bulldogs won 43 team and 33 individual titles, including Vicki Goetze’s 1992 NCAA title; captured seven SEC crowns; and posted eight NCAA top-10 finishes. She was named National Coach of the Year in 1998 and in 2000 became the youngest coach inducted into the NGCA Hall of Fame.

TODD McCORKLE (2000-07) Todd McCorkle arrived in Athens just months after leading Arizona to the national championship. The next spring, McCorkle coached Georgia to the program’s first-ever NCAA team title and became just the second coach in Division I history to win back-to-back NCAA championships at two schools. McCorkle also led the Bulldogs to two SEC titles and seven of his Bulldog golfers combined to earn 11 AllAmerica certificates. KELLEY HESTER (2007-12)

Kelley Hester returned to her alma mater in June 2007 and furthered the storied tradition of Georgia Golf. She led the Bulldogs to a pair of top-20 finishes in her five campaigns in Athens. Individually, Marta Silva Zamora blossomed under Hester’s tutelage to become the consensus National Player of the Year in 2011 and five different Bulldogs combined to secure eight AllAmerica certificates during Hester’s tenure.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 1981

Terri Moody moved atop the leaderboard midway through the second round of the 1981 AIAW Nationals at the UGA Golf Course and held off a late charge from Miami’s Patti Rizzo to win Georgia’s first-ever individual national title by a female studentathlete in any sport. Moody was among a group of five golfers tied for second following an opening-round 73, but grabbed a one-stroke lead over Rizzo with a 72 on her second loop. Moody, an Athens native who was the first female studentathlete to receive a full athletic scholarship from UGA, maintained that advantage when she TERRI MOODY and Rizzo both carded third1981 AIAW Medalist round 75s. On the final day, Rizzo’s 75 knotted the score and forced a three-hole playoff. Moody completed the trio of holes at 1-under while Rizzo was 1-over.

1984

Cindy Schreyer claimed a dramatic win at the 1984 NCAA Championships, winning a threehole playoff with SMU’s Martha Foyer and Miami’s Michele Bertroitti with a birdie at No. 12. Schreyer had battled Arizona State’s Heather Farr through most of the tournament. Farr carded an opening-round score of 71 at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Tarpon Springs, Fla. Schreyer, who was among seven golfers tied for eighth after the first day, rebounded to break the course record and knot herself with Farr on the leaderboard with a second-round 70. CINDY SCHREYER Farr regained a one-shot lead 1984 NCAA Medalist following the third round. While Schreyer shot 76 in the final round, Foyer and Berteotti carded 75s to force the playoff. Farr slipped to fourth with a 79, two strokes off the playoff-forcing score of 297.

1992

Vicki Goetze turned in one of the most impressive single rounds in the history of women’s collegiate golf en route to capturing top individual honors at the 1992 NCAA Championships on Arizona State University’s Karsten Golf Course. Goetze and Stanford’s Audrey Wooding led following firstround, 3-under 69s; however, Annika Sorenstam of Arizona grabbed a three-shot advantage with a second-round 68. Sorenstam maintained that same margin after both she and Goetze shot 72s on the third day. Goetze then torched the course with a 7-under 65 on the fourth day to top Sorenstam by three. VICKI GOETZE Goetze’s effort still remains as 1992 NCAA Medalist both the low single-round score in NCAA Championships history (though four other golfers have equaled the mark) and the Bulldogs’ low loop all time as well.

2001

The 2001 Bulldogs utilized three days of consistent golf to place themselves in contention and then used a spectacular final-round effort to win UGA’s first-ever national title in women’s golf. Georgia shot 298 and was among three teams tied for fourth after the opening day but climbed to sole possession of third after a second-round 295. The Bulldogs improved to 293 in the third round but still trailed top-ranked Duke by four entering the final 18 holes. Georgia seized contol early in the fourth round, tying the Blue Devils by No. 5 and then surging to a three-shot lead at No. 6. Duke never got closer than two shots thereafter. Georgia clinched the title with steely resolve. After a trio of bogeys at No. 16, UGA played the par-5 No. 17 at 3-under to all but seal the national title. The Bulldogs’ fourth-round score of 290 was six shots better than any other team in the field, as Reilley Rankin and Summer Sirmons carded a pair of 72s, while Laura Henderson and Angela Jerman both shot 73. All four of those Bulldogs finished among the top 18 individuals, with Rankin tying for 10th at 292, Henderson and Jerman both tying for 13th at 294 and Sirmons tied for 18th at 296.
