2019 SEASON PREVIEW
2019 SEASON PREVIEW The 2019 University of Georgia soccer team looks to build on the experience gained from a young squad last season. There’s a spirit and intensity from coaches and student-athletes that’s echoing in the locker room and on the field, providing a constant energy to keep striving for higher goals. That competitive drive has the Bulldogs working together as one, with growth and maturity, as the 2019 season gets set to kick off. Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne and his staff will work with a team of 33 players, consisting of two seniors, 11 juniors and sophomores, and nine freshmen. The Bulldogs return all eleven starters to the lineup, and this year’s team is set to show that mental and physical growth is on the horizon. Juniors lead the charge for the Bulldogs with leading scorer Reagan Glisson, midfielder/forward Katie Ralys, and defender Caroline Chipman returning to the field. The seasoned sophomores hope to bring more fight and edge as they spread across the field at all positions. Highlighting that crew is defender and 2018 SEC All-Freshman selection Cecily Stoute, midfielder Abby Boyan, and goalkeeper Emory Wegener. Throughout the 2018 season, opponents scored only 19 goals against Wegener, which is tied for fifth fewest goals allowed when playing a minimum of 800 minutes. She also recorded five shutouts, ranking ninth in career shutouts after only one season

TURNER SOCCER COMPLEX
The Turner Soccer Complex is the home of the Bulldogs’ soccer and softball programs. The soccer portion of the complex opened September 1, 1998 when Georgia played host to Mercer, winning 1-0. In 2000, the UGA Soccer Stadium served as the site of the Southeastern Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament. Host school Georgia welcomed thousands of fans, several media members, and the other seven competing teams and staffs to Athens for the four-day event. The Bulldogs felt right at home as they advanced to their first-ever tournament final, facing eventual champion Florida in front of 2,265 fans, the fourth largest crowd in facility history. In 2017, a full reconstruction of the grandstand and press box took place. The press box has ample room for media personnel, as well as game day operations staff, a TV booth, and radio booths for both home and away teams. Additionally, there are two large platforms on either side of the press box for cameras and VIP. In 2005, the stadium saw the addition of a new DAKTRONICS scoreboard with a digital video and graphics display. Some of the new equipment’s capabilities include the display of video headshots of players and coaches, highlight videos and promotional and crowd-pumping messages. Georgia played host to the first and second rounds of the 2007 NCAA Tournament at the UGA Soccer Stadium, and also played host to the Georgia Nike Invitational from 2007-10. In 2006, the Georgia Soccer locker room and offices were renamed the Turner Soccer Complex, recognizing the contributions and support received from the Hoyt “Jack” Turner family of Athens. Turner’s significant financial contributions have helped to provide the Georgia soccer program with the top-notch facility that it now enjoys. Turner is a former Georgia baseball (1951) and basketball (1951-52) player who also has served as the volunteer chairman of the Athletic Scholarship Endowment Program. In addition to its contributions made to the soccer program, the Turner family has endowed 10 scholarships for football, men’s and women’s basketball, gymnastics and baseball. A 1953 graduate of UGA’s Terry College of Business, Turner received a Distinguished Service Award from the college in 2002. The retired chairman of American Funds Distributors, he established the Turner Family Foundation in support of local charities.

Billy Lesesne was introduced as the fifth head coach of the Georgia women’s soccer team on December 16, 2014, after serving as the associate head coach at Duke University. In his first season as head coach Lesesne guided the 2015 Bulldogs to heights that UGA had never been before. On Sept. 27, 2015 Lesesne coached the Bulldogs to a 2-1 victory over No. 4 Texas A&M, marking the highest-ranked team a Georgia squad has ever defeated and the first in school history against the Aggies. The Bulldogs later went on the road and secured crucial back-to-back road wins against Vanderbilt and No. 16 Auburn. Georgia earned a No. 9-seed to the SEC Tournament in UGA’s 17th overall appearance in the conference tournament. Under Lesesne’s tutelage, two Bulldogs earned postseason 2015 All-SEC honors. Caroline Waters was named AllSEC Second Team, while Sydney Shultis garnered All-SEC Freshman Team recognition.
saw several highs and lows. Injuries plagued the team, but the Bulldogs were playing their best soccer in the final stretch of the season. Georgia played to a close 3-2 record in the final five games of the regular season, falling just short of postseason action. Under Lesesne’s direction, two Bulldogs moved up in the Georgia soccer record books, with Marion Crowder earning the third spot in career goals with 29 and Louise Hogrell pushing into the fifth spot for shutout victories with 15. Additionally, Lauren Tanner landed tied for seventh after dishing out seven assists in one season. The team played a game for the books against Coastal Carolina on Sept. 10. It was the first time two Bulldogs had a hat trick in the same game. Freshman Mollie Belisle and senior Kelsey Killean led Georgia to a 9-1 victory over the Chanticleers, with four and three goals, respectively. Lesesne began his coaching career at Cambridge Academy in Greenwood, S.C., in 1988, before serving as the assistant men’s coach at the College of Charleston from 1990-91. He also coached the South Carolina Boys’ State ODP team from 1990-95 and the Girls’ ODP team from 1996-99. Lesesne enjoyed a successful playing career, playing three years of professional soccer with the Charleston Battery (USISL/A-League) and four years at Erskine College, where he was an NAIA All-America selection his senior season and an NSCAA All-South Region honoree his last two seasons. He also earned NAIA All-District 6 honors from 1983-86, and was the Jake Todd/Erskine College Senior Athlete Award winner for the 1986-87 school year. He graduated from Erskine in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in biology/natural science.
In 2018, Georgia won three games at home against Charlotte, Georgia State, and Arkansas on top of playing to five draws after double overtime. Nine games were determined by one goal or less with three scoreless games of 110 minutes. The Bulldogs’ starting lineup consistently featured all sophomores and freshmen with seven newcomers starting eight games or more.
Lesesne and his wife, Katie, have two daughters, Addison and Victoria, and a son, William.
Georgia started conference play 1-0 for the first time since 2013 with a win over Arkansas and Cecily Stoute was named to the SEC All-Freshmen team. UGA finished 2018 ranked 12th in the NCAA in accumulative attendance and third in the SEC with 11,974, while ranking 20th in the NCAA in average attendance and fourth in the SEC with 1,089. 2018 SEASON RECAP
2018 YEAR IN REVIEW The 2018 University of Georgia soccer season came to an end after completing a tough schedule that featured five opponents ranked in the Top 25 and eight teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Georgia (4-9-5, 1-6-3 SEC) won three games at home against Charlotte, Georgia State, and Arkansas on top of playing to five draws after double overtime. Nine of Georgia’s games this season were determined by one goal or less with three scoreless games of 110 minutes. UGA ranked 12th in the NCAA in accumulative attendance and third in the SEC with 11,974, while ranking 20th in the NCAA in average attendance and fourth in the SEC with 1,089. The Bulldogs’ starting lineup consistently featured all sophomores and freshmen with seven newcomers starting eight games or more. Sophomore forward Reagan Glisson led the Bulldogs in goals (7), points (17), and shots (59). Freshman forward Abby Boyan, who also played at the midfield and defender positions, scored four goals with two assists and 26 shots. The Bulldogs went 3-3-2 in nonconference play before opening SEC action with a win against Arkansas at
home. This was the first time Georgia started 1-0 in the SEC since 2013. Georgia then played to a tie against Missouri before facing four ranked SEC opponents in five games. The Bulldogs and then-No. 17 Volunteers of Tennessee fought to a 0-0 tie after double overtime. Sidelined after suffering an ACL tear in preseason, sophomore Mollie Belisle of Atlanta was named to the SEC Community Service Team. Freshman defender Cecily Stoute, also from Atlanta, was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team. She is the first SEC All-Freshman player from Georgia since now-senior Sydney Shultis in 2015. As a standout of the Georgia defense, Stoute started in 17 of Georgia’s 18 games this season with the exception of the game at Auburn when she played for Trinidad and Tobago in the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers against Mexico and the United States. Stoute played a pivotal role in Georgia’s five shutouts throughout the 2018 campaign. Despite missing one game, she led the team in minutes played (1615) and contributed to Georgia’s attack. Stoute dished out one assist and four shots with three on target this season.
