2013 PREVIEW As he begins his 25th season as the head coach of the Georgia men’s tennis team, Manuel Diaz previews the upcoming 2013 spring season. Q: So, with the fall complete and the spring just around the corner, how would you assess the team at this point? Manuel Diaz: We’re still finding out, but I am really encouraged at this point. The guys seem like they’re in excellent shape for the most part. We had some guys stay in Athens over the holidays to practice, and two of our players (KU Singh and Casey Kay) went abroad to train in Singapore. Ben Wagland was able to go home to Australia and play some tournaments. I think for the most part I am just really pleased with the conscientiousness, and more than anything our guys are just really keen about starting the spring season. That’s really encouraging. I think we made some tremendous progress this fall individually, and now it’s a matter of coming together as a team. I’m confident that the personalities we have can do that. This is a close-knit group and we’re looking forward to getting going. Q: Does it seem like there’s youthful enthusiasm with the group being so young? MD: They’re like kids in a candy store. They’re excited to play alongside each other, for each other, and I think the closeness of the group is coming to light. Q: What have you seen in terms of leadership from the upperclassmen?
always been a tenacious competitor, but he’s becoming more resourceful and more confident in his game. By playing more relaxed he’s seen improvement in his ground strokes and his creativity on the court, which the young players see. Nathan [Pasha] has always been a vocal guy and that’s a big help to our freshmen. Q: How’s the makeup of this team after losing three starters from last season? MD: We’re going to have to count on some young players, whether it’s freshmen, sophomores, even juniors. We have to get these new guys to step up and contribute and play together, and I’m confident that this will be a year of great growth for everyone. We’re capable as a team of doing very well. Q: How do you feel about the No. 6 team ranking, three singles players in the top-20, and a top-5 doubles team? MD: It’s always a good thing to be recognized like that. I try not to pay much attention to things like that early, though. I tell the guys it’s a great accomplishment, but most of their tennis is still ahead of them. They can go build on that now and know they’ll be challenged along the way. They have to stay hungry.Q: What would you say to fans about this year’s team? MD: It’s going to be a lot of fun watching these players compete. We have a group of guys that are just great competitors. They’re colorful. The level of competition we have here, plus our home schedule this year is just tremendous. There are going to be some great matches. It’ll be fun.
MD: I’m encouraged. Hernus [Pieters] played his best tennis this fall, and seems more relaxed. That’s really benefited him. He’s

COACHES
Manuel Diaz Head Coach 25th season
In his 24th season as the Georgia men’s tennis coach and one of only two coaches in program history, former Bulldog Manuel Diaz guided the team to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the eighth straight season. Following the 2011-12 season, Diaz owns a career record of 559-117 (.827). In 2012 Diaz’s Bulldogs won the program’s 34th overall SEC title and eighth tournament crown, defeating Kentucky in the finals in Starkville, Miss. The 2012 season was also special for Diaz as he captured his 550th career win in a mid-season dual match vs. Vanderbilt, and was named the ITA Southeast Region Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career. It was his 30th season overall coaching in Athens as he completed six seasons as an assistant. With a final ranking of No. 5 in both 2011 and 2012, Diaz’s teams have finished in the top-five of the ITA rankings five of the last seven years. The 2011 season saw Diaz and the Bulldogs secure the program’s 26th regular-season and 33rd overall Southeastern Conference title before reaching the semifinals of the NCAA Championships for the fifth time in six seasons. In 2010, Diaz became just the sixth head coach in Georgia history to notch 500 career wins as the accolades continue to pile up for one of the nation’s top coaches. Manuel Diaz led the Bulldogs to their second consecutive NCAA Championship in 2008. The sixth NCAA team championship title in school history, Diaz has accounted for four of them as the head coach (1999, 2001, 2007, 2008). He was also an assistant coach under Dan Magill on both of the other winning squads (1985, ‘87). Diaz is currently one of only two active head coaches to win multiple NCAA championships (USC’s Peter Smith). Diaz coached the Dogs to their third consecutive SEC Championship in 2008, earning what was then the 25th regular-season championship in school history, far and away the most of any conference school. His teams have also claimed a conference-leading seven SEC Tournament championships. Combined, Georgia has claimed 34 SEC championship titles and has doubled up to win both championships in the same year six times. In addition to his four NCAA Championships, Diaz’s teams have reached the NCAA finals seven other times: 1989, 1991, 1993, 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2006. Since 2006, Diaz has coached his team to a remarkable 185-25 record that includes an undefeated 32-0 National Championship season in 2007. Georgia was also 30-1 in 2006, with its lone loss coming in the NCAA Finals. From April 23, 2005 to March 19, 2010, Diaz coached the Dogs to 71 straight wins at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, the second-longest home winning streak in program history. Diaz led Georgia to 11 consecutive national top-five finishes from 1989 to ‘99, a feat no other school in the country can match. Diaz’s Bulldogs won the program’s first-ever triple crown of tennis in 2001, as the team won its second national title in three years, while Matias Boeker won the NCAA singles crown and teamed with Travis Parrott for the doubles championship. It was only the third time since 1977 that such a feat had been accomplished. Diaz has led Georgia to 13 regular season SEC titles in his 21 seasons to go along with eight SEC Tournament titles. He was named SEC Coach of the Year in 1989, 1995, 2001, 2006 and 2007. Under Diaz, Georgia has seen 31 different players earn 66 All-America honors. This total ranks tied for second behind Stanford for most All-Americans nationally in that time period. Diaz has also coached six of Georgia’s seven four-time All-Americans, including: Al Parker (1988-91), Mike Sell (1992-95), Jamie Laschinger (1993-96), Steven Baldas (1995-98), Bo Hodge (2001-04)
and most recently John Isner (2004-07). Under Diaz, Georgia has been among the most nationally-televised collegiate programs. Georgia made history in 2007, when its national championship win in Athens at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex became the first collegiate tennis match ever to be televised live. The production was carried on ESPNU. The Bulldogs have had a player in the NCAA singles finals in 1991, 1992, 1993, 2002 and 2007, and appeared in the team final in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2006, 2007 and 2008, all of which have been televised by ESPN. In 2005, Isner and Ruiz’s doubles win was televised by The Tennis Channel. Georgia had a player in the team, singles and doubles finals in 2001, but those matches were not televised. Diaz is a respected and honored leader in collegiate tennis including being selected as the Wilson/ITA National Coach-of-the Year in 1995, 2001 and 2007. He was inducted into the State of Georgia Hall of Fame in the fall of 2000. For his outstanding contribution to tennis in his home country of Puerto Rico, Diaz was inducted into the Puerto Rican Tennis Hall of Fame in 1998. Diaz is married to the former Suzanne Rondeau of Toronto, Canada. They have three sons: Manuel III, Eric and Alex. Eric is a redshirt sophomore on the men’s tennis team.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
1985
The 1985 Georgia Bulldogs, led by seniors in their top four positions, were perhaps the most powerful team in school history. The Bulldogs were led by Mikael Pernfors, a native Swede who won a second straight NCAA singles championship with a victory over teammate and roommate George Bezecny. Bezecny played No. 2 for the Bulldogs while Allen Miller, a four-time All-American, was No. 3. The remainder of the lineup consisted of Deane Frey at No. 4 singles, sophomore Philip Johnson at No. 5 and freshman Trey Carter at No. 6. Georgia finished the spring dual match schedule with a perfect 26-0 record.

1987
The 1987 Georgia tennis team completed the SEC hat trick by winning the indoor tournament, the conference round robin with a 9-0 record and the league outdoor championship. The lineup for the 1987 national champions consisted of the following players: Philip Johnson at No. 1 singles, Stephen Enochs at No. 2, John Boytim at No. 3 and Trey Carter at No. 4. Rounding out the Bulldogs’ lineup was Mike Morrison at No. 5 singles with T.J. Middleton at No. 6. Freshman Jim Childs saw significant action at No. 6 singles and was a regular at No. 3 doubles.

1999
The 1999 Bulldogs entered the newly formatted 64team tournament as the No. 10 seed, playing host to one of 16 regional tournaments. Through the course of the twoday regional and four-day championship tournaments, the Bulldogs overcame seemingly insurmountable odds, fighting off three team match points to rise to the top. In the team final against top-ranked UCLA, Georgia opened with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 to claim the doubles point. The Bruins retaliated, proving that they would not go quietly. Falling into a tie situation in singles play, junior Joey Pitts swung the balance for the Bulldogs in a three-setter at the No. 4 position.

2001
The 2001 Bulldogs not only etched their name in the annals of Georgia tennis history but also the NCAA record books as being only the second program to win the championship, fail to reach the Round of 16 the following year and then claim another NCAA crown in a span of three years. Stanford is the only other team to accomplish such a feat. Georgia rode a 25-match winning streak through the tournament to capture the program’s fourth national title. In the team final, Georgia clinched the doubles point for the early lead, but lost the first set in three of the singles matches. However, with Georgia leading 3-1, Chad Carlson topped Adam Carey 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 to clinch the match for UGA.
Final: Georgia def. Tennessee, 4-1 Team Final Singles: No. 1 - M. Boeker (UGA) vs. Parsons (UT), 1-6, 6-4, 5-5, susp. No. 2 - Toledo (UT) def. Hodge (UGA) 6-7(4), 6-0, 6-4 No. 3 - Joseph (UGA) def. The 2007 Bulldogs completed their dream season by winning the program’s fifth NCAA Team Championships on their home courts. The national crown was the final piece to a perfect puzzle as the squad captured every possible team title during its undefeated run, which also included the ITA Team Indoor National Championship and the SEC Tournament crown. Georgia was so dominant as a team that for the first time in team history, the Bulldogs never allowed an opponent more than two points in a match. Even then, UGA’s opposition gained two points only twice, while suffering a total of 22 shutouts.
Final: Georgia def. Illinois, 4-0 Team Final Singles: No. 1 - Isner (UGA) def. Anderson (ILL) 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) No. 2 - Flores (UGA) vs. Rowe (ILL) 6-7 (6-8), 2-4, unf. Jones (ILL) 6-4, 6-1 No. 6 - Hunt (UGA) vs. Heiser (ILL) 4-6, 6-3, 2-1, unf.
In 2008 the Bulldogs became the first squad to win back-to-back NCAA Championship titles since Stanford accomplished that feat in 1998-99. The Bulldogs officially captured the championship by defeating the Texas Longhorns in the finals, 4-2. However, arguably the victory most indicative of the Bulldogs’ talent came in the semifinal round as Georgia topped the undefeated, No. 1-ranked and heavily-favored Virginia Cavaliers, 4-3. Overshadowed by the run to the national championship, the Bulldogs also captured their third consecutive regular-season Southeastern Conference championship with a 10-1 record.

Mississippi State, 4-0 points in an individual flighted tournament (there was not a separate team Finals: Georgia d. Ole Miss, 4-2 tournament champion). In 1990, a team dual match format was instituted for the conference tournament which provided a SEC Tournament Champion. From 1990-98, the SEC Champion was determined by a total aggregate points accumulated at the conclusion of the conference tournament: one full point is awarded for each regular-season conference win, one-half point for wins in the first two rounds of the conference tournament, one-half point for receiving a first-round bye in the conference tournament and one full point for a win in the conference tournament semifinals and finals. For the 1999 season, the same points system was in place with a couple of changes: one full point for first-round bye in the conference tournament and one full point for a win in any round of the conference tournament. In 2000, the SEC changed the determination of its tennis regular season champion to the team with the best winning percentage in conference regular-season dual matches (11 matches).

GEORGIA: HOME OF CHAMPIONS What makes University of Georgia Tennis the Home of Champions?
Eight Team National Championships. Seventeen Individual National Championships. Thirty-four SEC Team Titles. Forty-three All-Americans and seven four-time All-Americans. Ten players in the ATP top-100 world rankings. The only active head coach to have two players in the top-10 world rankings. That’s a good place to start. Georgia is about tradition, teamwork and attitude. It’s about facing an opponent head-on so that he knows you are willing to fight like a BULLDOG. It’s about proudly representing the “G” on your uniform that so many have worn before you and understanding what it means to adorn the legendary logo. It’s about chasing the dream of hoisting the national championship trophy year after year and truly believing that you can.
The Georgia Tennis Creed I AM
Worthy, deserving, capable, talented, confident, bold, brave, composed, equal to the task, focused, prepared, responsible and committed.
I CAN
Because I: believe in myself, care enough, am willing to work for it, will earn it, have enough desire, am willing to sacrifice and want it bad enough!
WE ARE
The best competitors, courageous, determined, together, a team, united to one cause, hungry, tenacious, confident, resilient and tough enough!
WE WILL
Because we are willing to: develop the synergy, become the best, strive for excellence, be bold, overcome our fears, overcome adversity, persevere, endure, dominate, prove our greatness, dream big and achieve our dreams.
