GEORGIA: HOME OF CHAMPIONS What makes University of Georgia Tennis the Home of Champions?

Eight Team National Championships. Seventeen Individual National Championships. Thirty-six SEC Team Titles. Forty-five All-Americans and seven four-time All-Americans. Ten players in the ATP top-100 world rankings. The only active head coach to have two players in the top-10 world rankings. That’s a good place to start. Georgia is about tradition, teamwork and attitude. It’s about facing an opponent head-on so that he knows you are willing to fight like a BULLDOG. It’s about proudly representing the “G” on your uniform that so many have worn before you and understanding what it means to adorn the legendary logo. It’s about chasing the dream of hoisting the national championship trophy year after year and truly believing that you can.

The Georgia Tennis Creed I AM

Worthy, deserving, capable, talented, confident, bold, brave, composed, equal to the task, focused, prepared, responsible and committed.

I CAN

Because I: believe in myself, care enough, am willing to work for it, will earn it, have enough desire, am willing to sacrifice and want it bad enough!

WE ARE

The best competitors, courageous, determined, together, a team, united to one cause, hungry, tenacious, confident, resilient and tough enough!

WE WILL

Because we are willing to: develop the synergy, become the best, strive for excellence, be bold, overcome our fears, overcome adversity, persevere, endure, dominate, prove our greatness, dream big and achieve our dreams.

Georgia Tennis Honoring the Past. Winning in the Present. Building for the Future.

Q&A WITH COACH MANUEL DIAZ Q: How do you feel about the schedule this season? Manuel Diaz: I think we’ve got a tremendous schedule, probably one of the toughest schedules we’ve ever had. That’s something exciting because our players gained a lot of experience last year. I expect our SEC teams to be even stronger than last year, our SEC competition to be even stronger than last year. Then we play Ohio State who is a perennial national contender on our courts next year, I also expect them to be top 3 or 4 in the nation. For the first time we’ve started this SEC versus Pac 12 showdown which will include UCLA, USC, and Florida. Both SEC schools will meet both Pac 12 schools so we won’t play Florida in this meet but we will have the opportunity to play USC and UCLA who will also likely be in the top four or five in the country. Q: How do you continue the momentum from such a successful season last year? MD: Well that’s our standard; we expect to compete for those two SEC championships every year. I don’t see a reason why we can’t this year. It’s going to take a lot, it’s going to take our best and that’s what we’re aiming to achieve this year. We know it’s going to be extremely fast competition, and we know we’re going to have to play our best. If we do and that’s something we expect to be able to accomplish, stay healthy, and compete to the best of our ability, I believe we will be a definite contender. Q: After having no seniors on last years team, how good are Hernus Pieters and Garrett Brasseaux? MD: I think Garrett and Hernus really had strong seasons last year and they’re both hungry to play even higher this year. I think we saw Garrett was probably our most improved player last year; he really gave us a huge boost. He’s going to be tremendous in both singles and doubles this year. Last year he worked extremely hard and got stronger and fitter and his practices became a lot more focused, that truly defined what happened to us as a team and I think he really lead the way. I expect him to have a great year and you could possibly look for both of those guys to play higher up.

Q: How much will the loss to Virginia (in the NCAA semifinal) serve as motivation this season? MD: We saw what we can do, we had a lot of young members on our team and we had a lot of talent. To the players I think more than anything they got a taste of what it was to compete for a national championship and they can’t wait until this year comes around. Q: How important is it to you to have Will Glenn and Tristan Venables on the staff? MD: I really believe that those two guys add so much to our program; they’re such a huge part of what happens here everyday. They live for the kids and they’re just entirely dedicated to seeing these kids fulfill their potential, not only as tennis players but also as students and as people. They care very much about these kids and I feel that we’ve got the best assistants in the nation. Q: How big is it for Georgia to be hosting the NCAA Championships again in May? MD: I think the kids are extremely excited but it’s something we must prepare for because, when the tournament is here, there’s going to be a lot of distractions, there’s going to be a lot of expectations and that’s what we must prepare for. It’s not just as easy as playing in front of our crowd and it being great, there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes with how you deal with all those things that will make a major difference.

Q: How good are this group and how much do you like being around them? MD: This is probably one of the most fun groups I’ve ever worked with. I’ve loved all my teams but this is a lot of fun and especially last year when they came together for the end of the year it showed it was a hard working team, it was a team that had a lot of chemistry, a lot of spunk, they really played hard for each other and that’s what we’ve always been about and that’s what we take a great deal of pride in. I thought at the end of the year, even though it was a difficult loss when we lost in the semifinals after coming so close, as painful as that was it was such a gratifying year if you really look at the whole thing.

Manuel Diaz is in his 26th season as Georgia’s head coach.

COACHES Manuel Diaz

Head Coach 26th Season

In his 25th season as the Georgia men’s tennis coach and one of only two coaches in program history at the varsity level, Bulldog letterwinner Manuel Diaz guided the team to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in eight years. He owns a career record of 585-122 (.827), and coached his 700th Georgia match on April 19, 2013 in the SEC Tournament in Oxford, Miss. Diaz’s Bulldogs won both the SEC regular season and tournament titles in 2013, their 35th and 36th conference titles, sweeping both crowns for the seventh time in school history, and on March 10 Diaz moved past Kentucky legend Dennis Emery into second place on the all-time SEC wins list between only his mentor Dan Magill. In 2012, Diaz as captured his 550th career win in a mid-season dual match vs. Vanderbilt, and was named the ITA Southeast Region Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career. It was his 30th season overall coaching in Athens as he completed six seasons as an assistant. With a final ranking of No. 5 in both 2011 and 2012 and No. 3 in 2013, Diaz’s teams have finished in the top-five of the ITA rankings in six of the last eight years. Manuel Diaz led the Bulldogs to their second consecutive NCAA Championship in 2008. The sixth NCAA team championship title in school history, Diaz has accounted for four of them as the head coach (1999, 2001, 2007, 2008). He was also an assistant coach under Dan Magill on both of the other winning squads (1985, ‘87). Diaz is currently one of only two active head coaches to win multiple NCAA championships (USC’s Peter Smith). Diaz coached the Dogs to their third consecutive SEC Championship in 2008, earning what was then the 25th regular-season championship in school history, far and away the most of any conference school. His teams have also claimed a conference-leading seven SEC Tournament championships. Combined, Georgia has claimed 34 SEC championship titles and has doubled up to win both championships in the same year six times. In addition to his four NCAA Championships, Diaz’s teams have reached the NCAA finals seven other times: 1989, 1991, 1993, 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2006. Since 2006, Diaz has coached his team to a remarkable 185-25 record that includes an undefeated 32-0 National Championship season in 2007. Georgia was also 30-1 in 2006, with its lone loss coming in the NCAA Finals. From April 23, 2005 to March 19, 2010, Diaz coached the Dogs to 71 straight wins at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, the second-longest home winning streak in program history. Diaz led Georgia to 11 consecutive national top-five finishes from 1989 to ‘99, a feat no other school in the country can match. Diaz’s Bulldogs won the program’s first-ever triple crown of tennis in 2001, as the team won its second national title in three years, while Matias Boeker won the NCAA singles crown and teamed with Travis Parrott for the doubles championship. It was only the third time since 1977 that such a feat had been accomplished. Diaz has led Georgia to 14 regular season SEC titles in his 21 seasons to go along with nine SEC Tournament titles. He was named SEC Coach of the Year in 1989, 1995, 2001, 2006 and 2007. Under Diaz, Georgia has seen 32 different players earn 68 All-America honors. This total ranks tied for second behind Stanford for most 10

SIX NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS The 1985 Georgia squad, led by seniors in the top four positions, was perhaps the most powerful team in school history. The Bulldogs were led by Mikael Pernfors, a native Swede who won a second straight NCAA singles championship with a victory over teammate and roommate George Bezecny. Bezecny played No. 2 for the Bulldogs while Allen Miller, a four-time AllAmerican, was No. 3. The rest of the lineup consisted of Deane Frey at No. 4 singles, Philip Johnson at No. 5 and freshman Trey Carter at No. 6. Georgia finished the spring dual match schedule with a perfect 26-0 record.

Final: Georgia def. UCLA 5-1 No. 1 - Pernfors (UGA) d. Kures (UCLA) 6-2, 6-3 No. 2 - Bezecny (UGA) d. Klaparda (UCLA) 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 No. 3 - Miller (UGA) d. 1987

The 1987 Georgia tennis team completed the SEC hat trick by winning the indoor tournament, the conference round robin with a 9-0 record and the league outdoor championship. The lineup for the 1987 national champions consisted of the following players: Philip Johnson at No. 1 singles, Stephen Enochs at No. 2, John Boytim at No. 3 and Trey Carter at No. 4. Rounding out the Bulldogs’ lineup was Mike Morrison at No. 5 singles with T.J. Middleton at No. 6. Freshman Jim Childs saw significant action at No. 6 singles and was a regular at No. 3 doubles.

Final: Georgia def. UCLA 5-1 No. 1 - Johnson (UGA) d. Nahirney (UCLA) 4-6, 1-2, ret. No. 2 - Enochs (UGA) d. Farrow (UCLA) 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 No. 3 - Boytim (UGA) d. 1999

The 1999 Bulldogs entered the newly formatted 64-team tournament as the No. 10 seed. Through the course of the two-day regional and four-day championship tournaments, the Bulldogs overcame seemingly insurmountable odds, fighting off three team match points to rise to the top. In the team final against top-ranked UCLA, Georgia opened with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 to claim the doubles point. The Bruins retaliated, proving that they would not go quietly. Falling into a tie in singles play, junior Joey Pitts swung the balance for the Bulldogs in a three-setter at the No. 4 position.

Final: Georgia def. UCLA 4-3 No. 1 - Grinda (UCLA) d. Hemeda (UGA) 6-4,6-7(4),6-4 No. 2 - Fleishman (UCLA) d. Corrales (UGA) 6-3,6-3 No. 3 - Carlson (UGA) d. 2001

The 2001 Bulldogs etched their name in the annals of Georgia tennis history and also the NCAA record books as just the second program to win the title, fail to reach the Round of 16 the following year and then claim another NCAA crown in a span of three years. UGA rode a 25-match winning streak through the tournament to capture the program’s fourth national title. In the team final, Georgia clinched the doubles point, but lost the first set in three singles matches. However, with Georgia leading 3-1, Chad Carlson topped Adam Carey 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 to clinch the match for UGA.

1985

2007 2008

The 2007 Bulldogs completed their dream season by winning the program’s fifth NCAA title on their home court. The crown was the final piece to a perfect puzzle as the squad captured every possible team title during its undefeated run, which also included the ITA Team Indoor National Championship and the SEC Tournament. Georgia was so dominant as a team that for the first time in team history, the Bulldogs never allowed an opponent more than two points in a match. Even then, UGA’s opposition gained two points only twice, while suffering a total of 22 shutouts. The 2008 Bulldogs became the first squad to win back-to-back NCAA Championship titles since Stanford in 1998-99. Georgia officially captured the title by defeating Texas in the finals, 4-2. However, arguably the victory most indicative of the Bulldogs’ talent came in the semifinal round as Georgia topped undefeated, No. 1-ranked and heavily-favored Virginia, 4-3. Overshadowed by the run to the national championship, the Bulldogs also captured their third consecutive regularseason Southeastern Conference championship with a 10-1 record.

LSU, 4-1 in an individual flighted tournament (there was not a separate team tournament Finals: Georgia d. Ole Miss, 4-0 champion). In 1990, a team dual match format was instituted for the conference tournament which provided a SEC Tournament Champion. From 1990-98, the SEC Champion was determined by a total aggregate points accumulated at the conclusion of the conference tournament: one full point is awarded for each regular-season conference win, one-half point for wins in the first two rounds of the conference tournament, one-half point for receiving a first-round bye in the conference tournament and one full point for a win in the conference tournament semifinals and finals. For the 1999 season, the same points system was in place with a couple of changes: one full point for first-round bye in the conference tournament and one full point for a win in any round of the conference tournament. In 2000, the SEC changed the determination of its tennis regular season champion to the team with the best winning percentage in conference regular-season dual matches (11 matches).
