season preview

Q&A with head coach steve holeman Q: How important is the senior class to this year’s team? A: They’re the key to our success. We kind of have an interesting dynamic with this year’s team in that we’re very senior-laden, we’re very freshman-laden, and we kind of have a handful of sophomores and juniors in between, but the great thing is that we have a lot of good, quality leadership on this team. That’s extremely important because we have so many young players. Half our roster is freshmen. It’s critical that we have good leadership and there are returning players that are the core of this team. But our freshmen are here to help and they’ll contribute right away. Q: Is this the first time you have had this much of the roster made up by freshmen and what is that like? A: For me, this is my 20th season in the SEC, so I’m sure somewhere along the line I’ve had classes similar in size, but I would probably say overall this is the most talented incoming group that I’ve been able to be a part of. Q: After some of the disappointments of last season, what are your expectations for the coming year? A: They’re no different from last year in that we feel like we’re always going to compete for an SEC Championship. First and foremost, that is our objective. Obviously we are looking to get back into the NCAA Tournament and not just get back into the tournament, but win games. I think we have a group that can do it – a talented group that works really hard. We have tremendous personalities across the board. Q: How much does the voluntary strength and conditioning work the players do in July mean come the start of the season? A: By them being physically ready to go, it means we have to spend less time and focus and energy on getting them fit because they’re on a higher fitness level, they’re going to be on a higher fitness level than in previous years, so now we can focus and put our efforts into the tactical side of the game. We can focus on getting them to play the way we want them to play, getting our new players to play faster and a better brand of soccer. We want their speed of play to be at a really high level so that they can learn our system, and it’s great that we can really focus on that rather than having to focus on fitness at this stage. Q: How important is it for you to have kept Dan Blank and Robin Confer together as a coaching staff for three years now? A: That’s incredibly important, because we know each other now, we blend extremely well together, everyone knows their role, and we continue to improve as a staff. We’ve met as a staff prior to the start of camp and kind of understand our roles. We are able to learn from our mistakes and are constantly improving even in our coaching styles and the way we implement what we do. This year will be better than last, and that was better than the year before that, in terms of our coaching staff and how we organize things.

Q: How do you feel about approaching 200 career wins (four away)? Is it something you notice? A: It really isn’t, and coaches may say that just to say that but until you just mentioned it I didn’t even know. That’s not a goal of mine, that’s not an objective of mine, and when it happens it happens. It may be nice to be recognized but that’s far from being any kind of concern for me. Q: How important is it for the Georgia soccer program for players like Ashley Baker to go on and be visibly successful after they leave the program? A: I think it’s outstanding. It’s a great reflection of the program and I think it’s a reflection of what we’re doing at Georgia and how we’re able to develop players and help move them on. For those that want to move onto the professional ranks, they have an opportunity to do that here at the University of Georgia.

Steve Holeman Head Coach FOURTH Season • 20th Overall Wake Forest 1990 Career Record: 196-148-39 (.563) Steve Holeman made his debut as the head coach of Georgia soccer for the 2010 season. Holeman came to Athens after spending the previous 15 seasons as the head coach at Ole Miss. The dean of SEC soccer coaches, Holeman is the fourth head coach at Georgia since the program’s inception in 1995. The 2010 season saw Georgia compile a record of 11-6-4 (5-3-3 SEC) while reaching the SEC Championships semifinals for the third time in four seasons. Dating back to his time at Ole Miss, Holeman has now reached the SEC Tournament for 14 straight seasons. Four Bulldogs received AllSEC honors under Holeman’s direction while the team garnered its eighth consecutive NSCAA Team Academic Award for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 GPA. In 2011 Holeman led the Bulldogs back to the NCAA Tournament, the program’s eighth appearance, with a regular-season record of 12-5-2 (6-3-2). Georgia reached the NCAA second round for the sixth time, falling 3-1 to Duke in Durham, N.C., a place the Blue Devils have never lost in tournament time, to end with a record of 13-7-2. The trip was Holeman’s first at Georgia and his fifth overall. Following a 7-11-2 campaign in 2012, as the program dealt with injuries to several key players, Holeman owns a career record of 196-148-39 (.563), just four wins shy of 200. Holeman started the women’s soccer program at Auburn in 1993, then moved to Oxford, Miss., where he began the soccer program for the Rebels in 1995. In addition to the four NCAA Tournament appearances under Holeman’s direction, Ole Miss won three SEC Western Division titles and made an appearance in the SEC Tournament Finals in 1999. The four NCAA Tournament appearances (2002, 2003, 2005, 2009) include a trip to the second round in 2003 when the Rebels defeated the Texas Longhorns. In 2005, Holeman led the Rebels to a 14-5-2 record including an 8-1-2 mark in league play. He was honored by Soccer Buzz as the 2005 Central Region Coach of the Year runner-up.His 19 years in the conference makes him the longest-tenured active SEC women’s soccer coach. Holeman produced 29 All-SEC selections for the Rebels, and had at least one all-league player every year since 1996. Under Holeman, Ole Miss players were among the nation’s elite in the classroom with eight Academic/Scholar All-America honorees and 33 Academic All-Region selections. Over his last five seasons in Oxford, the Rebels went 19-1-5 against SEC West foes. At Auburn, Holeman put together the Tigers’ first-ever women’s soccer program in only six weeks and led the team to winning record at 7-6-3 in its inaugural campaign. Holeman has served on the staff at the Region III Olympic Development Program (ODP). He was head coach of the South Region team at the U.S. Soccer Festival in 2001-02, and guided them to a gold medal finish at the 2001 event in Chicago. Holeman, who holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “A” coaching license, began his coaching career while still a student-athlete at Wake Forest University. In 1991, Holeman guided the

Huntsville (Ala.) under-17 boys select team to the Alabama state championship. From 1992-94, he served as coach of the Auburn men’s club team. At the same time he was beginning his coaching career, Holeman also played soccer at Wake Forest. A fouryear letterman at midfield, he helped lead the Demon Deacons to the NCAA Tournament in 1988, 1989 and 1990. In 1989, he was a member of the Wake Forest team that clinched the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round. During that 1989 season, Wake Forest was ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation. Holeman played professional soccer as a member of the Montgomery Capitals, a semi-pro team based in Montgomery, Ala., in 1993 and 1994. He also played on the Alabama Men’s All-Star Indoor Team in 1992. His knowledge and respect throughout college soccer earned him the position of chairman for the NCAA men’s and women’s soccer rules committee, a position he held in 2004-05. A native of West Long Branch, N.J., Holeman graduated from Wake Forest University in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in health and sports science. In 1993, he received his master’s degree in exercise physiology from Auburn, maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout his graduate studies. Holeman has also successfully completed coursework toward a doctorate degree in exercise physiology. Holeman was named the Georgia head coach on April 16, 2010. Born Dec. 21, 1967, Holeman is married to the former Julie Newton of Goodman, Miss., and they have a daughter, eight-year-old Anna Mae, and a son, four-year-old Robert (Bo) Stephen.

Dan Blank Associate Head Coach FOURTH Season Bethany College 1991 Dan Blank was promoted to associate head coach of the Georgia soccer team in December of 2011 after spending the 2010 and 2011 seasons as the team’s assistant coach under Steve Holeman. Blank’s first season with Georgia soccer was 2010, as he joined Holeman in Athens following three seasons as an assistant at Ole Miss. Blank was previously a volunteer coach for the Rebels in 2007 and 2008 before he was promoted to a full-time assistant in 2009. In his first year in charge of the Ole Miss defense, Blank helped lead the Rebels to the best goals-against average in the SEC. On that note, Blank became the first coach in SEC history to lead his defense to the best goals-against average in consecutive years at different universities in 2010. In 2009 with the Rebels, Blank’s defense put up a conference-best 0.68 GAA in SEC games. A year later at UGA, Blank led the Bulldogs to a GAA of 0.60 in league games to top the SEC. Guiding the Georgia defenders, Blank helped the Bulldog backs post a 0.85 goals against average overall that year, allowing just 19 goals all season and coming away with nine shutouts on the year. Defenders Rebekah Perry and Torri Allen were named second-team All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman, respectively, under Blank’s leadership in 2010. In 2011 Blank’s back four put up a goals against average of 1.20 and six shutouts, and in 2012, they posted a 1.10 GAA. Blank boasts a wealth of coaching experience and success at many levels of soccer. Prior to joining the Rebel staff in 2007, he spent nine years as the head women’s coach at Embry-Riddle University after building the program from scratch in 1998. A three-time Florida Sun Conference Coach of the Year and NAIA Region 14 Coach of the Year, Blank compiled a 98-61-8 record and guided the Eagles to three conference titles, three NAIA Region XIV titles and three NAIA national tournament appearances. Before his time at Embry-Riddle, Blank spent three seasons as head coach of the nationally ranked Brewton-Parker College women’s program where he amassed a 47-13-3 record. He led the Barons to two NAIA tournament berths and three league titles, earning Georgia Athletic Conference Coach of the Year plaudits each season. The Barons were ranked as high as fourth nationally all three years. Prior to his tenure at Brewton-Parker, Blank served for three years as assistant coach for Wheeling Jesuit College, helping that program to three national tournament berths and three regional and district titles. Blank has also had success on the semi-pro level, having served as an assistant coach and assistant general manager for the USL W-League’s Atlanta Classics from 1997-98 and head coach of the Jacksonville Jade in 2001 and 2002, leading that franchise to its first winning record. Blank has helped produce more than 25 collegiate All-Americans and numerous NAIA Scholar-Athletes and Academic All-America picks. He holds a USSF “A” License and an advanced national diploma from the NSCAA. Blank played his collegiate soccer at Bethany College (W. Va.), where he earned a bachelor’s degree in communications in 1991. At Bethany he played under coaching legend Graham Ramsay and helped the Bison to four straight NCAA Division III Tournament berths. Blank resides in Athens with his wife, Beth, and their daughter, Izzy (9).

Robin Confer Asst. Coach / Recruiting Coordinator ninth Season North Carolina 1998 Women’s soccer legend Robin Confer completed her eighth season as Georgia’s assistant coach and recruiting coordinator in 2012. During that time Confer has worked mainly with the Georgia offense, and in 2010 she served a stint as the Bulldogs’ interim head coach prior to Steve Holeman’s hiring. As the recruiting coordinator, Confer has played an integral role in bringing highlyranked signing classes to UGA each year. The 2006 class was ranked No. 8, the 2007 group was rated No. 14, the 2008 class earned a No. 15 ranking, and the most recent group of 2013 commits was ranked No. 12. The Georgia program has also been successful in keeping the best in-state talent at UGA, as eight of the 14 members of the 2013 freshman class hail from the Peach State. Confer’s work with the Georgia attack helped the Bulldogs outscore the opposition by a tally of 37-19 in 2010, while rookie Alexa Newfield earned first-team All-SEC honors and was ranked in the top-5 in several SEC offensive categories. In 2011, Confer’s work with the attackers helped UGA again outscore its opposition 39-28, including a 20-10 mark in overtime, while Newfield emerged as the SEC’s most threatening goal-scorer leading the league in nearly every offensive category while breaking the Georgia record for shots (102)

and points (40). As a former forward for the U.S. National Team, Confer pays special attention to Georgia’s attacking players. In 2007 she helped coach sophomore Carrie Patterson to NSCAA Second-Team All-American accolades, as she became just the second Bulldog ever to earn that award. In 2006, Patterson earned SoccerBuzz Freshman All-America, SEC Freshman of the Year, First-Team All-SEC and Second-team All-Southeast Region honors, and left Georgia as the school’s all-time leader in goals, assists, points, and multi-goal games under Confer’s direction. Patterson was ultimately drafted 40th overall in the 2010 Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) draft. Confer also assisted with the transition of senior Ali Williams from defender to forward in 2005, a move which sent Williams on to earn SEC Offensive Player of the Year recognition. Confer joined the staff at Florida State after a stellar career in the ACC and successful coaching stints in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big 12 and Southeastern Conference. The former 1997 National Player of the Year and three-time national champion at North Carolina is embarking on her 13th year in the collegiate coaching ranks. Under Confer’s watch in Tallahassee, the Seminoles posted a 29-13-4 overall record, a 9-5-2 mark in the ACC and advanced to the program’s first College Cup in 2003. But Confer is no stranger to life in the SEC, as she was an assistant coach at Mississippi State for one season under head coach Neil McGuire before joining the Seminole staff. Before her stint in Starkville, Miss., Confer served as a second assistant at one of the top women’s soccer programs in the nation at Texas A&M. While working with Aggie head coach G. Guerrieri, Confer and Texas A&M advanced to the Sweet 16 in back-to-back NCAA Tournaments. In addition to her UGA coaching responsibilities, Confer has been Region III ODP staff coach for 12 years and is the Assistant Age Group coach for the 1998s. Confer’s first coaching experience came at her alma mater as she served as a volunteer assistant under coaching legend Anson Dorrance at North Carolina. A four-year starter at North Carolina from 1994-1997, Confer helped the Tar Heels to three national championships (1994, 1996-1997). During her senior season, Confer was named the National Player of the Year by both the Soccer News and SoccerBuzz. In North Carolina’s run to the 1997 National Championship, Confer was named the Most Valuable Offensive Player of the NCAA Final Four, as well as being named a first-team All-American. She was also a finalist for the Hermann Award, which recognizes the nation’s top collegiate soccer athlete, and a semifinalist for the Missouri Athletic Club Sports Foundation Player of the Year award in 1998. Confer currently ranks fourth on UNC’s career point-scoring list behind such great names as Mia Hamm and April Heinrichs. She is the fifth-leading goal scorer in Tar Heel history with 77 tallies, and her 55 career assists are the sixth most in North Carolina soccer history. Confer never missed a game in her Carolina career and still holds the NCAA record with most games played at 107. She is one of just 11 former North Carolina players to have had their jersey retired. She was also named to The Atlantic Coast Conference 50th Anniversary Women’s Soccer team which recognized the top 50 players in the conference since 1987. A former captain of the U.S U-20 Youth National team, Confer eventually made her Women’s National Team debut January 18, 1996, against Ukraine and was a member of the pool from 96-99 and earned eight caps and one goal. In 2001, she was drafted in the fifth round of the WUSA’s Global Draft as a member of the Boston Breakers in the league’s inaugural season. Confer was a standout forward at Clearwater (FL) Central Catholic High School where she scored 227 goals, including 80 during her senior season prior to being named a Parade All-American. Confer received her bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science from North Carolina in 1998. She currently resides in Athens.
