Q&A WITH COACH MANUEL DIAZ Q: What are you expecting from the four freshmen? A: We have what I think is a great recruiting class. We’re going to have lots of these guys be contributors this year and also for years to come, I believe. Q: How have you seen the seniors already step up and lead this team? A: I think they’re off to a great start. They worked hard during our conditioning coming into the season. The captains have taken a leadership role in getting the guys out on the court. They’re just gung-ho. They are excited. They’re really looking forward to making their senior year a great one. Honestly, I’ve been seeing some improvement in their conscientious effort when I’ve had them out on the court. They’re doing a good job of setting some goals for themselves and the rest of the team. Q: With a busy schedule that includes hosting perennial powers such as USC and UCLA, what is your hope for the team this season? A: Our goal is to win another conference championship and to win another national championship. We’ve got a long way to go. Everybody has a long way to go. But we want to make some progress, to get these guys stronger, more fit and confident. Our goal is to be able to improve in areas individually from top to bottom. To have the depth and the strength in our doubles teams that we need to compete for those championships is the process that we have to embark on quickly. And I think we’re well on our way.
Q: What are your thoughts about the rule changes this year? A: I’m behind everything now. But as we were just chiseling it out and giving it shape, there were some things that I had some questions on. I could have gone different ways with a couple of the proposals. But I’m fully behind the fact that we needed to step up and create some changes that were going to make our sport a little bit more relevant and a little bit more exciting. And at the same time, we will be able to retain the integrity of our sport. I think that we’ve come up with a format that is going to take 2.5-3 hours. A no-AD format will have a lot of exciting moments. It will create some fan-friendly points throughout the match. I think we’ll be able to retain the attention of the fans throughout the duration of the dual meet. It will help attendance and give us the ability to stream dual matches online or create a format where people are going to be able to get interested. Growing our fan base is of utmost importance. The return of no-AD scoring was a brainchild of coach Dan Magill, my predecessor. We played it for 15 years from 1973-1988, and it was a tremendous success. We had our biggest crowds. We put a lot of college players in the pros, more than at any other time. It teaches you discipline. It creates for an exciting format throughout the match. It doesn’t take an hour, hour-and-a-half to get to a crescendo. It has exciting climax moments throughout the match. So from a player development standpoint and from a fan perspective, I think it’s going to be fantastic. Q: Will no-AD scoring level the playing field among athletes with varying ranges of endurance? A: Stamina is part of our game. We have a very special sport. You have to be quick, you have to be strong, you have to have agility and you have to have endurance. So stamina is a component that we don’t want to totally eliminate. The mental part of it—just hanging in there when players get tired—we don’t want to totally take that out of the game. You still have to play three sets. You still have to endure being down a set or a set and a service break, and you still have to come back. I think that it’s a good compromise. It’s going to help, I think, grow our sport.
ITA Shortened Format • No-ad scoring in singles and doubles. • Three doubles matches played, each match one set to 6, with a tie-break at 6-all. • Followed (after a 5-minute intermission) by six singles matches, each match 2 out of 3 sets, with tie-breaks at 6-all. • No warm-up with opponents (in doubles and in singles) • This is the official format for all non-conference dual match competition with all singles matches being played to completion (doubles will remain “clinch”).
Manuel Diaz is in his 27th season as Georgia’s head coach.

COACHES Manuel Diaz Head Coach 27th Season
Manuel Diaz is in his 27th season as head
coach at Georgia, and he is one of only two coaches in program history at the varsity level. In his 26th season, the Bulldog letterwinner guided the team to the round of 16 of the NCAA Championships while winning a league-leading 37th Southeastern Conference title. Following the 2013-14 season, Diaz owns a career record of 603-130 (0.823). He won the 600th match of his career in April 2014 vs. Alabama, becoming just the 10th NCAA Division-I coach to reach that milestone, and won his second ITA Southeast Region Coach of the Year award in three years and seventh overall. In 2013, his 25th season at the helm, Diaz led UGA into the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in eight years. He coached his 700th Georgia match on April 19 in the SEC Tournament in Oxford, Miss. Diaz’s Bulldogs won both the SEC regular season and tournament titles in 2013, their 35th and 36th conference titles, sweeping both crowns for the seventh time in school history, and on March 10 Diaz moved past Kentucky legend Dennis Emery into second place on the all-time SEC wins list between only his mentor Dan Magill, where he remains after 2013-14. In 2012, Diaz as captured his 550th career win in a mid-season dual match vs. Vanderbilt, and was named the ITA Southeast Region Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career. It was his 30th season overall coaching in Athens as he completed six seasons as an assistant. With a final ranking of No. 5 in both 2011 and 2012 and No. 3 in 2013, Diaz’s teams have finished in the top-five of the ITA rankings in six of the last nine years. Manuel Diaz led the Bulldogs to their second consecutive NCAA Championship in 2008. The sixth NCAA team championship title in school history, Diaz has accounted for four of them as the head coach (1999, 2001, 2007, 2008). He was also an assistant coach under Dan Magill on both of the other winning squads (1985, ‘87). Diaz is currently one of only two active head coaches to win multiple NCAA championships (USC’s Peter Smith). Diaz coached the Dogs to their third consecutive SEC Championship in 2008, earning what was then the 25th regular-season championship in school history, far and away the most of any conference school. His teams have also claimed a conference-leading nine SEC Tournament championships. Combined, Georgia has claimed 37 SEC championship titles and has doubled up to win both championships in the same year six times. In addition to his four NCAA Championships, Diaz’s teams have reached the NCAA finals seven other times: 1989, 1991, 1993, 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2006. Since 2006, Diaz has coached his team to a remarkable 185-25 record that includes an undefeated 32-0 National Championship season in 2007. Georgia was also 30-1 in 2006, with its lone loss coming in the NCAA Finals. From April 23, 2005 to March 19, 2010, Diaz coached the Dogs to 71 straight wins at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, the second-longest home winning streak in program history. Diaz led Georgia to 11 consecutive national top-five finishes from 1989 to ‘99, a feat no other school in the country can match. Diaz’s Bulldogs won the program’s first-ever triple crown of tennis in 2001, as the team won its second national title in three years, while Matias Boeker won the NCAA singles crown and teamed with Travis Parrott for the doubles championship. It was only the third time since 1977 that such a feat had been accomplished. Diaz has led Georgia to 15 regular season SEC titles in his 26 seasons to go along with nine SEC Tournament titles. He was named SEC Coach of the Year in 1989, 1995, 2001, 2006 and 2007. In all, he has 24 league titles in 26 years. Under Diaz, Georgia has seen 33 different players earn 69 All-America honors. This total ranks tied for second behind Stanford for most All-Americans nationally in that time period. Diaz has also coached six of Georgia’s seven four-time AllAmericans, including: Al Parker (1988-91), Mike Sell (1992-95), Jamie Laschinger (1993-96), Steven Baldas (1995-98), Bo Hodge (2001-04) and most recently John

Diaz also coached Grand Slam champions Murphy Jensen (French Open doubles) and T.J. Middleton (Wimbledon mixed doubles) in addition to numerous players who were in or around the ATP top-100 in the world. Under Diaz, Georgia has been among the most nationally-televised collegiate programs. Georgia made history in 2007, when its national championship win in Athens at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex became the first collegiate tennis match ever to be televised live. The production was carried on ESPNU. The Bulldogs have had a player in the NCAA singles finals in 1991, 1992, 1993, 2002 and 2007, and appeared in the team final in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2006, 2007 and 2008, all of which have been televised by ESPN. In 2005, Isner and Ruiz’s doubles win was televised by The Tennis Channel. Georgia had a player in the team, singles and doubles finals in 2001, but those matches were not televised. SIX NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
1985
The 1985 Georgia squad, led by seniors in the top four positions, was perhaps the most powerful team in school history. The Bulldogs were led by Mikael Pernfors, a native Swede who won a second straight NCAA singles championship with a victory over teammate and roommate George Bezecny. Bezecny played No. 2 for the Bulldogs while Allen Miller, a four-time AllAmerican, was No. 3. The rest of the lineup consisted of Deane Frey at No. 4 singles, Philip Johnson at No. 5 and freshman Trey Carter at No. 6. Georgia finished the spring dual match schedule with a perfect 26-0 record.
Final: Georgia def. UCLA 5-1 No. 1 - Pernfors (UGA) d. Kures (UCLA) 6-2, 6-3 No. 2 - Bezecny (UGA) d. Klaparda (UCLA) 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 No. 3 - Miller (UGA) d. 1987
The 1987 Georgia tennis team completed the SEC hat trick by winning the indoor tournament, the conference round robin with a 9-0 record and the league outdoor championship. The lineup for the 1987 national champions consisted of the following players: Philip Johnson at No. 1 singles, Stephen Enochs at No. 2, John Boytim at No. 3 and Trey Carter at No. 4. Rounding out the Bulldogs’ lineup was Mike Morrison at No. 5 singles with T.J. Middleton at No. 6. Freshman Jim Childs saw significant action at No. 6 singles and was a regular at No. 3 doubles.
Final: Georgia def. UCLA 5-1 No. 1 - Johnson (UGA) d. Nahirney (UCLA) 4-6, 1-2, ret. No. 2 - Enochs (UGA) d. Farrow (UCLA) 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 No. 3 - Boytim (UGA) d. 1999
The 1999 Bulldogs entered the newly formatted 64-team tournament as the No. 10 seed. Through the course of the two-day regional and four-day championship tournaments, the Bulldogs overcame seemingly insurmountable odds, fighting off three team match points to rise to the top. In the team final against top-ranked UCLA, Georgia opened with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 to claim the doubles point. The Bruins retaliated, proving that they would not go quietly. Falling into a tie in singles play, junior Joey Pitts swung the balance for the Bulldogs in a three-setter at the No. 4 position.
Final: Georgia def. UCLA 4-3 No. 1 - Grinda (UCLA) d. Hemeda (UGA) 6-4,6-7(4),6-4 No. 2 - Fleishman (UCLA) d. Corrales (UGA) 6-3,6-3 No. 3 - Carlson (UGA) d. 2001
The 2001 Bulldogs etched their name in the annals of Georgia tennis history and also the NCAA record books as just the second program to win the title, fail to reach the Round of 16 the following year and then claim another NCAA crown in a span of three years. UGA rode a 25-match winning streak through the tournament to capture the program’s fourth national title. In the team final, Georgia clinched the doubles point, but lost the first set in three singles matches. However, with Georgia leading 3-1, Chad Carlson topped Adam Carey 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 to clinch the match for UGA.
2007 2008
The 2007 Bulldogs completed their dream season by winning the program’s fifth NCAA title on their home court. The crown was the final piece to a perfect puzzle as the squad captured every possible team title during its undefeated run, which also included the ITA Team Indoor National Championship and the SEC Tournament. Georgia was so dominant as a team that for the first time in team history, the Bulldogs never allowed an opponent more than two points in a match. Even then, UGA’s opposition gained two points only twice, while suffering a total of 22 shutouts. The 2008 Bulldogs became the first squad to win back-to-back NCAA Championship titles since Stanford in 1998-99. Georgia officially captured the title by defeating Texas in the finals, 4-2. However, arguably the victory most indicative of the Bulldogs’ talent came in the semifinal round as Georgia topped undefeated, No. 1-ranked and heavily-favored Virginia, 4-3. Overshadowed by the run to the national championship, the Bulldogs also captured their third consecutive regularseason Southeastern Conference championship with a 10-1 record.

LSU, 4-1 From 1953-1989 the SEC Champion was determined by the accumulation of points Finals: Georgia d. Ole Miss, 4-0 in an individual flighted tournament (there was not a separate team tournament champion). In 1990, a team dual match format was instituted for the conference tournament which provided a SEC Tournament Champion. From 1990-98, the SEC Champion was determined by a total aggregate points accumulated at the conclusion of the conference tournament: one full point is awarded for each regular-season conference win, one-half point for wins in the first two rounds of the conference tournament, one-half point for receiving a first-round bye in the conference tournament and one full point for a win in the conference tournament semifinals and finals. For the 1999 season, the same points system was in place with a couple of changes: one full point for first-round bye in the conference tournament and one full point for a win in any round of the conference tournament. In 2000, the SEC changed the determination of its tennis regular season champion to the team with the best winning percentage in conference regular-season dual matches (11 matches).

What makes University of Georgia Tennis the Home of Champions?
Eight Team National Championships. Seventeen Individual National Championships. Thirty-six SEC Team Titles. Forty-six All-Americans and seven four-time All-Americans. Ten players in the ATP top-100 world rankings. The only active head coach to have two players in the top-10 world rankings. That’s a good place to start. Georgia is about tradition, teamwork and attitude. It’s about facing an opponent head-on so that he knows you are willing to fight like a BULLDOG. It’s about proudly representing the “G” on your uniform that so many have worn before you and understanding what it means to adorn the legendary logo. It’s about chasing the dream of hoisting the national championship trophy year after year and truly believing that you can.
The Georgia Tennis Creed I AM
Worthy, deserving, capable, talented, confident, bold, brave, composed, equal to the task, focused, prepared, responsible and committed.
I CAN
Because I: believe in myself, care enough, am willing to work for it, will earn it, have enough desire, am willing to sacrifice and want it bad enough!
WE ARE
The best competitors, courageous, determined, together, a team, united to one cause, hungry, tenacious, confident, resilient and tough enough!
WE WILL
Because we are willing to: develop the synergy, become the best, strive for excellence, be bold, overcome our fears, overcome adversity, persevere, endure, dominate, prove our greatness, dream big and achieve our dreams.
Georgia Tennis Honoring the Past. Winning in the Present. Building for the Future.
