Coach & Player Interviews

The best time to interview head coach Josh Brewer or any Georgia golfer is usually immediately prior to practice at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. Those days, the entire team should be available at the UGA Golf Course prior to practice, which will begin at 3 p.m. However, practice location is subject to change and academic committments of players may alter their availability. To ensure interview requests are addressed expeditiously, please contact the UGA Sports Communications office at least 24 hours in advance.

Directions to the UGA Golf Course

• From the Athens Bypass (Ga. Highway 10) take the Milledge Avenue exit. If traveling from the east side of Athens, take a left at the bottom of the ramp (and proceed underneath the bypass). If traveling from the West, take a right at the bottom of the ramp (going away from the bypass). • Travel approximately one-half mile on Milledge and make the first left onto Riverbend Parkway. (If you reach the Georgia soccer/softball complex on your right, you’ve gone too far.) • Proceed approximately one-half mile and make a right into the entrance to the UGA course. • Follow the road past the driving range (on your left) and into the large parking lot. The Boyd Center is located closest to the front left corner of the parking lot, while the clubhouse for the UGA Golf Course is located closest to the lot’s front right corner.

Liz Murphey Tribute A true pioneer in women’s athletics Liz Murphey was one of the leading figures in the evolution and development of women’s intercollegiate athletics both on the national level and at the University of Georgia. A Newnan, Ga., native, Murphey was not only an outstanding women’s golf coach but also led the overall Lady Bulldog women’s sports program to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s as its senior woman administrator. She died November 23, 2005, following a short illness. “Liz was certainly one of the national pioneers in women’s athletics and one that provided the real foundation for the program here at Georgia,” said former UGA Director of Athletics Vince Dooley. “Her work at Georgia was recognized across the country both as an administrator and golf coach.” Murphey joined the university faculty in 1967 as an assistant professor of physical education and women’s golf coach. She coordinated the women’s club sports program until being named assistant athletic director for women’s sports in 1978. When UGA officially added women’s golf as an intercollegiate sport in the fall of 1978, Murphey already had a solid foundation in place. She led the Lady Bulldogs to 21 team and 18 individual titles from 1978-86.

Under Murphey, Georgia finished in the top 10 at each national championship from 1979-83, including second at the 1981 AIAWs and third at the 1983 NCAAs. Additionally, Terri Moody and Cindy Schreyer won individual national titles in 1981 and 1984, respectively. Murphey was the first-ever NGCA National Coach of the Year in 1984, and she was a charter member of that organization’s Hall of Fame. Two of her most prestigious honors were the 1996 Rolex Meritorious Service Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Collegiate Women’s Athletic Adminstators in 2003. Under her leadership, Georgia won eight of the 14 SEC women’s all-sports awards, secured four national team championships and captured an additional 31 individual national titles. Murphey retired from the University in May 1996. She was inducted into the UGA Athletic Association’s Circle of Honor – the school’s highest tribute paid to former athletes or coaches – in 2001. Murphey’s legacy lives on. For more than four decades, Georgia has hosted the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, appropriately one of the nation’s oldest women’s collegiate athletic events in any sport.

Liz’s Legacy

Liz Murphey’s fingerprints are still very much a part of UGA women’s athletics. Murphey hired current UGA women’s head coaches Jack Bauerle (swimming and diving), Andy Landers (basketball) and Jeff Wallace (tennis), as well as the retired Suzanne Yoculan (gymnastics). That quartet has combined to lead 18 teams to NCAA Championships and 44 squads to SEC Championships in their respective sports. She also brought in Beans Kelly as her assistant coach in 1986 and handed the reins to the golf program over shortly thereafter. Kelly led Georgia to eight SEC titles and eight top-10 finishes at the NCAAs. Putting UGA On the map

Hosting the 1981 AIAW Nationals was perhaps Liz Murphey’s finest hour as a coach and administrator. Terri Moody (upper right) captured the first-ever national title in UGA women’s athletics history and the Lady Bulldogs finished second in the team field (right).

2014-15 Outlook Piecing together a winning Puzzle

As the Georgia Bulldogs prepared for the 2014-15 campaign, Josh Brewer and his golfers took a unique route to establish their goals. While college golf is as much a team sport as anything else on campus, the game’s history is rooted deeply in individual competition. Therefore, Brewer charged the Bulldogs to set individual aspirations for the coming season. “Instead of trying to come up with a team goal, we took all of their individual goals and put the puzzle together,” Brewer said. “We added their individual goals together to establish team goals. It’s an honor to play for the University of Georgia. The people who are here get to represent one of the greatest college golf programs in history. When you tell your teammates ‘I can average 73. I can be top 30 in the country.’ We’re going to put it out there to the group and hold you accountable.” From fall through spring, each golfer will have a marking stone for their performance and how that equates to team aspirations. “We’ve created team goals based on the individuals goals,” Brewer said. “We’ve done it for athletics to academics to community service. You have to hold up your percent of the bargain. Coach Young and I have a percentage in there too and it’s our job to help motivate and help them achieve those goals. And if someone if overachieving, maybe we reassess their goals and help them create bigger ones.” And big goals are what Brewer has in mind. “We are getting back to what Georgia Golf is all about – the history of this program and the winning culture,” Brewer said. “I came here three years ago to create a culture where we win SEC and national championships. It’s an honor to be here. There are very high expectations that come along with playing here. This team has grown to understand that.” A year after having an extremely youthful roster with seven freshmen and sophomores, Brewer believes experience could be a major contributor to the Bulldogs’ success this fall and spring. “Late last season, we started to become one of the better teams in the country and grew together to have good chemistry and camaraderie,” Brewer said. “We have eight of those players back and added a talented freshman. This team understands that if we can get going and create some confidence, we’re going to have a great year.” Georgia’s lone senior is definitely tournament tested. Rocio Sanchez Lobato has appeared in 31 tournaments in her first three seasons, including as an individual in the NCAA Championships as a freshman. “I’ve seen a big difference in Rocio already,” Brewer said. “Last year, I think she was a bit uncomfortable being a leader. Already, Rocio Sanchez Lobato led Georgia to a sweep of the team and individual titles at the 2013 FSU Match-Up Tournament.

6

I can tell she’s so much more at ease with being a leader and at peace with her own skin. That should translate into great things on the golf course. She should be able to relax and just go play. She experienced the NCAA Championships as an individual her freshman year. We want to send her out with us there as a team.” Juniors Amira Alexander and Manuela Carbajo Ré were major contributors last year. Alexander wrapped up the year with a career-best 4-under 68 in the final round of the NCAA East Regional and finished third at the Caribbean Am this summer. Carbajo Ré paced Georgia in virtually every conceivable statistic last season and Brewer believes she not only can lead the Bulldogs, but be among the nation’s top golfers, this season. “Amira has fully embraced the University of Georgia and helping us change our culture,” Brewer said. “She helps us hold people accountable and create very high standards. Amira has done everything we’ve asked as coaches. She proves with hard work and determination great things are possible. “Manuela is one of the best players in the world,” Brewer said. “We’ve got to help her believe how good she is. I wish I could put myself in her body and give her that belief because I know she could be one of the top five or 10 players in the world. In coaching her, we’ve got to help her understand that she is that talented.” Rounding out the junior class, Sylvie Brick and Isabel Silva Zamora provide Georgia with much-needed depth. “Sylvie’s short game has gotten really good since her freshman year,” Brewer said. “She’s one of the better bunker players and pitchers on the team. We’ve just got to get her more consistent in striking the golf ball. If she can figure out how to hit it well on a daily basis, she’ll see the scores that she needs to play. “Isa has a lot of talent and she’s shown up and worked this fall,” Brewer added. “She’s shown signs of pushing people in qualifying. What she needs comes from experience. She needs to use the experience of our qualifying rounds and perhaps competing as an individual and use that to her advantage to try and translate those opportunities into playing tournament golf.” All three of Georgia’s sophomores – Harang Lee, Sammi Lee and Mary Ellen Shuman – played significant roles during their initial campaigns in Athens. Brewer hopes those experiences will result in even more production and consistency this season. “You have to remember that Harang came here as a 17-yearold,” Brewer said. “With a true understanding of what it takes for academics and time management, she’ll have a better sophomore year…not saying that her freshman year was that far off. She came here with the goal of helping us recreate an identity of having great players and All-Americans. Not to put too much pressure on her, but we expect her to play that well. “We saw Sammi improve so much from the start of the year to the end of the season,” Brewer said. “By Regionals, you could argue she was our best and most consistent player. I think she understands what she needs to do to take that next leap. That’s the hard part in our sport. You improve and improve and all of a sudden the improvements you make become very small. She has to stay patient. We have to help her stay patient. “Mary Ellen played a lot in for us last fall and really helped us,” Brewer said. “She kind of stayed the same in the spring and we just had a few other players step up and remove her from the lineup. She understands what it takes and worked hard this summer and has continued to work hard to start the school year.” Freshman Isabella Skinner is expected to provide a boost to the Bulldogs, both talent- and depth-wise. “We expect Bella to come in and compete for a spot in the lineup immediately,” Brewer said. “Her junior resume is really solid. She was the best player in the state when we recruited and signed her. That comes with a little bit of pressure, but she knows she’s here to do what swimming and diving has done and equestrian has done – win a national championship.”

Josh Brewer 3rd season at the University of Georgia

Josh Brewer’s experiences with collegiate athletics had a remarkable storybook ending... or so he thought. As a senior at Indiana, Brewer birdied the final two holes to finish second individually and help the Hoosiers secure a one-stroke victory at the 1998 Big Ten Championships. While Brewer did not know so at the time, the event was the final tournament in both his career and that of legendary coach Sam Carmichael. “That was the last year that a conference championship didn’t earn you an automatic bid to the NCAAs,” Brewer said. “We were ‘on the bubble’ and thought winning the Big Tens would get us in, but it didn’t. Obviously, I was disappointed at the time, but to look back at it now, it was a pretty neat way to wrap up my career as a college golfer.” After winning the 1998 Indiana State Amateur crown that summer, Brewer quickly moved into the business world. He accepted a position as a financial advisor with Linsco/Private Ledger in Indianapolis. Three falls later, Mike Mayer, who moved from assistant to head coach of the IU men’s team after Carmichael retired and also Brewer’s childhood golf instructor, asked him to return to campus to share his experiences in golf and school and the transition to professional life with the current team. “I just really enjoyed the interaction with the student-athletes,” Brewer said. “On the way home, my wife Selena said she hadn’t seen me that happy in a while. She suggested that college coaching might be something I should explore.” Chalk one up for the wife.

At season’s end, eight Bulldogs – the aforementioned group plus Kevin Kisner and Erik Compton – qualified for the FedExCup Playoffs. Haack’s breakthrough season with the Bulldogs came in 1998-99. No Georgia team had ever ascended to the No. 1 spot in the polls, but Haack’s team did so early in the spring campaign. The Bulldogs later validated their ranking by winning the program’s first national championship. Haack was named National Coach of the Year. National titles make their way to Athens

Georgia Golf owns four national championships – three individual crowns and one team title. Athens native Terri Moody was the first woman ever to receive a full athletic scholarship to UGA and became the Bulldogs’ first national medalist. She captured the 1981 AIAW title at the UGA Golf Course after winning a three-hole playoff over Miami’s Patti Rizzo. Cindy Schreyer secured Georgia’s first NCAA medalist honor by winning at the Innisbrook Resort in Tarpon Springs, Fla., in 1984. She did so in much the same style as Moody, in a threehole sudden-death playoff win over SMU’s Martha Foyer and Miami’s Michele Berteotti.

Making a mark in the professional ranks

Fifteen Bulldogs have gone on to play on the LPGA Tour, with four topping $1 million in career earnings and the group winning more than $8.5 million combined. In addition, 24 Georgia golfers have competed on the Futures Tour and several have played on the Ladies European Tour (LET). Nanci Bowen won the 1995 Nabisco Dinah Shore Championship, the lone major championship by a Georgia golfer. In 1986, Cindy (Pleger) Mackey became the first former Bulldog to secure an LPGA win, rolling to a 16-shot victory at the MasterCard International that still stands as the Tour record for largest margin of victory.

Liz Murphey (1978-85)

Liz Murphey, a leader in the evolution of women’s intercollegiate athletics, had been at UGA for a decade when the school named women’s golf an intercollegiate sport. She led Georgia top-10 finishes at each national championship from 1979-83 and coached Terri Moody and Cindy Schreyer to individual national titles. Murphey also served as SWA for 18 years and guided UGA women’s athletics to six SEC All-Sports titles from 1984-94.

Beans Kelly (1985-00)

Never labeled as predictable, Beans Kelly resigned in 2000 while seemingly on top of the college golf world. Under her tutelage, the Lady Bulldogs won 43 team and 33 individual titles, including Vicki Goetze’s 1992 NCAA title; captured seven SEC crowns; and posted eight NCAA top-10 finishes. She was named National Coach of the Year in 1998 and in 2000 became the youngest coach inducted into the NGCA Hall of Fame.

Todd McCorkle (2000-07) Todd McCorkle arrived in Athens just months after leading Arizona to the national championship. The next spring, McCorkle coached Georgia to the program’s first-ever NCAA team title and became just the second coach in Division I history to win back-to-back NCAA championships at two schools. McCorkle also led the Bulldogs to two SEC titles and seven of his Bulldog golfers combined to earn 11 AllAmerica certificates. Kelley Hester (2007-12)

Kelley Hester returned to her alma mater in June 2007 and furthered the storied tradition of Georgia Golf. She led the Bulldogs to a pair of top-10 finishes in her five campaigns in Athens. Individually, Marta Silva Zamora blossomed under Hester’s tutelage to become the consensus National Player of the Year in 2011 and five different Bulldogs combined to secure eight AllAmerica certificates during Hester’s tenure.

Brewer’s first win at UGA

Josh Brewer’s first victory as Georgia’s head coach was memorable indeed, a sweep of the team and individual titles at the 2013 FSU Match-Up Tournament. Rocio Sanchez Lobato opened the tournament with a 6-under 66 to grab a lead she never relinquished. Emilie Burger closed with a key 4-under 68 as Georgia shot 1-under 287 to secure a four-shot victory over No. 6 Oklahoma.

National Champions 1981

Terri Moody moved atop the leaderboard midway through the second round of the 1981 AIAW Nationals at the UGA Golf Course and held off a late charge from Miami’s Patti Rizzo to win Georgia’s first-ever individual national title by a female studentathlete in any sport. Moody was among a group of five golfers tied for second following an opening-round 73, but grabbed a one-stroke lead over Rizzo with a 72 on her second loop. Moody, an Athens native who was the first female studentathlete to receive a full athletic scholarship from UGA, maintained that advantage when she Terri Moody and Rizzo both carded third1981 AIAW Medalist round 75s. On the final day, Rizzo’s 75 knotted the score and forced a three-hole playoff. Moody completed the trio of holes at 1-under while Rizzo was 1-over.

1984

Cindy Schreyer claimed a dramatic win at the 1984 NCAA Championships, winning a threehole playoff with SMU’s Martha Foyer and Miami’s Michele Bertroitti with a birdie at No. 12. Schreyer had battled Arizona State’s Heather Farr through most of the tournament. Farr carded an opening-round score of 71 at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Tarpon Springs, Fla. Schreyer, who was among seven golfers tied for eighth after the first day, rebounded to break the course record and knot herself with Farr on the leaderboard with a second-round 70. Cindy Schreyer Farr regained a one-shot lead 1984 NCAA Medalist following the third round. While Schreyer shot 76 in the final round, Foyer and Berteotti carded 75s to force the playoff. Farr slipped to fourth with a 79, two strokes off the playoff-forcing score of 297.

1992

Vicki Goetze turned in one of the most impressive single rounds in the history of women’s collegiate golf en route to capturing top individual honors at the 1992 NCAA Championships on Arizona State University’s Karsten Golf Course. Goetze and Stanford’s Audrey Wooding led following firstround, 3-under 69s; however, Annika Sorenstam of Arizona grabbed a three-shot advantage with a second-round 68. Sorenstam maintained that same margin after both she and Goetze shot 72s on the third day. Goetze then torched the course with a 7-under 65 on the fourth day to top Sorenstam by three. Vicki Goetze Goetze’s effort still remains as 1992 NCAA Medalist both the low single-round score in NCAA Championships history (though four other golfers have equaled the mark) and the Bulldogs’ low loop all time as well.

2001

The 2001 Bulldogs utilized three days of consistent golf to place themselves in contention and then used a spectacular final-round effort to win UGA’s first-ever national title in women’s golf. Georgia shot 298 and was among three teams tied for fourth after the opening day but climbed to sole possession of third after a second-round 295. The Bulldogs improved to 293 in the third round but still trailed top-ranked Duke by four entering the final 18 holes. Georgia seized contol early in the fourth round, tying the Blue Devils by No. 5 and then surging to a three-shot lead at No. 6. Duke never got closer than two shots thereafter. Georgia clinched the title with steely resolve. After a trio of bogeys at No. 16, UGA played the par-5 No. 17 at 3-under to all but seal the national title. The Bulldogs’ fourth-round score of 290 was six shots better than any other team in the field, as Reilley Rankin and Summer Sirmons carded a pair of 72s, while Laura Henderson and Angela Jerman both shot 73. All four of those Bulldogs finished among the top 18 individuals, with Rankin tying for 10th at 292, Henderson and Jerman both tying for 13th at 294 and Sirmons tied for 18th at 296.
