Season Outlook

GEORGIA LOOKING TO BRING IT HOME IN 2014 Georgia returns in 2014 looking to repeat as SEC Champions and make a deep run into the NCAA Tournament which will takeplace in Athens. The Bulldogs return six from its 2013 squad, all of whom saw action during conference and postseason play. Of those six Bulldogs, three were AllAmericans, and four were members of All-SEC teams. In addition to the six returners, Georgia welcomes Caroline Brinson to the mix in 2014. Brinson, a native of New Orleans, arrived for classes in January and will be a welcome addition to the Bulldogs. Brinson’s mother, the former Elizabeth Alexander ‘89, lettered for Georgia in 1988 and 1989 and helped Georgia to the 1989 SEC Championship. The fall featured many highlights for Georgia: • Georgia combined to go 62-14 in singles and 29-9 in doubles. • Lauren Herring advanced to the singles semifinals at the All-American Championships to earn an automatic bid to the ITA National Indoor Championships . • Silvia Garcia won the ITA Southeast Regional singles championship to earn an automatic bid to the ITA National Indoor Championships where she advanced to the quarterfinals. • Lilly Kimbell grabbed a Top-40 January ranking after leading the Bulldogs with a 13-2 record in singles and an 8-3 record in doubles with Mia King. She advanced through the prequalifying draw of the All-American Championships to come within just two wins of making the main draw. • Georgia’s success in the fall led to a good showing in January’s first batch of rankings. The Georgia women’s tennis program is the only in the SEC to have two singles players ranked in the Top 15 and is also the only school in the conference to have a doubles pair ranked in the Top 15. Georgia women’s tennis head coach Jeff Wallace, now in his 29th season at the helm of the program, reflected on the fall and talked about his expectation for the spring dual match season: The fall was obviously pretty successful. Looking back, how do you think the fall went for the team? Wallace: I was excited for our players. Our focus in the fall is to really just get better as athletes and try to improve our game as much as we can in areas like mental toughness and conditioning and I thought we did a nice combination of everything to set us up nicely for the spring. I really think that the teamwork is such an aspect of it for us and I think that’s going really well. The fall campaign…tons of wins, great rankings, but all of the most important part is still in front of us.

2014 Georgia Women’s Tennis

Caroline Brinson joins the team this spring. How excited are you that she’s in Athens? She’s come in and instantly fit in. It seems like she’s been here all along. It’s special for me having coached her mom (Elizabeth Alexander ‘89) who was a phenomenal athlete when she was here. “She is a great athlete, has a really good attitude and a terrific work ethic. Having coached her mom, I know she has great genes too so we’re really excited that she’s a Bulldog. ” Georgia has some great home matches this year. How big is that for the team and what kind of effect can fans have on the match? Wallace: We were road warriors last year and played a lot of big matches on the road and it’s nice that we now have all of those matches at home this year. Our fans have always really helped us play at a high level and this year will be a fun year for the fans to come out and see what this team is all about before NCAA’s in May.

Lilly Kimbell Maho Kowase

Season Outlook

Speaking of the NCAA Championships, how special is it for UGA to play host to that event? Wallace: It’s so awesome and so exciting. I think it’s great for the community, for the university and especially neat for all of our past players who played and can come back and watch the current team. We’re hoping to have the most we’ve ever had come back, make it to Athens this year. Whether at home or on the road, playing in the SEC is no small task. How do you approach that with the team? Wallace: We’re lucky that we play in the best conference in college tennis. Every year it feels like a grind, but it’s also fun to be in matches that matter week in and week out. When we get to the postseason, we’ve played in big matches and we know what that feels like.

Kate Fuller

After a successful fall campaign, how do you keep the team from looking too far forward? Wallace: We have high expectations for this team. It’s a long season but it goes so fast and that’s the thing we all have to realize. We have to take advantage of every day and keep getting better each day. It flies by so everyone has really got to take each opportunity and each day and look at it as something where we’re going to blink and it’s all going to be ending.

2

Where do you think the leadership will come from on this year’s team? Wallace: I think there’s going to be a lot of leadership with Kate, Lilly and Maho. They’ve really created a culture of excellence and that’s something that they want to see continue through this year and beyond. I think that it’s great that you have some senior leadership out there and people that have done it the right way. For me as a coach, it’s exciting. But we need everyone to be a leader and we need everyone to step it up and do the right thing daily to make this the program that it is.

This team is great on the court, but also very accomplished off the court. What does that say about the program? Wallace: We have a well-rounded program. We have some unbelievable student-athletes and they do a great job in the classroom and the community. That’s important to them and also important to us. I think their tennis and results speak for themselves, but having the highest GPA of all the sports teams on campus last year was really neat and was one of their goals. It’s fun to see them reaching goals that they set out for.

Head Coach Jeff Wallace

Jeff WaLlace Head Coach | 29th Season Georgia ‘85 Career: 607-150 (.802)

As the nation’s winningest active women’s tennis coach, Jeff Wallace has built the Georgia Bulldogs in to one of the elite college programs that both wins and plays host to NCAA Championships. The 2013-14 season marks his 29th year with the Bulldogs. In 2013, Wallace became one of three coaches in women’s tennis history to reach the 600-win plateau. He is one of five active collegiate tennis coaches with at least 600 wins, and is one of five UGA coaches to reach the mark. In 2009 following another memorable campaign when Georgia advanced to its 10th NCAA Final Four, Wallace became the first person to ever be named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Coach of the Year four times. The 2010 season featured Chelsey Gullickson winning the NCAA singles title at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The past three years, Georgia has finished the year ranked in the top eight after reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships.

Proven Winner During his tenure, Wallace’s squads have claimed two NCAA championships, three USTA/ITA National Team Indoor titles and seven Southeastern Conference crowns. A four-time National Coach of the Year recipient and four-time SEC Coach of the Year, Wallace’s career record entering the 2014 season is 607-150. His .802 winning percentage is the best among active Division I coaches with a minimum of 500 victories. Wallace’s teams are the picture of consistency. With the 2013 NCAA bid, Georgia has appeared in 27 straight NCAA Tournaments and has advanced to the “Final Four” 10 times. Only once during his time as coach of the Bulldogs has the team missed the NCAA Tournament, and that was his first year back in 1986.

Playing/Coaching Career A 1985 graduate of the University of Georgia, Wallace capped his playing career under legendary Bulldog head coach Dan Magill in 1984 after winning the SEC singles title at the No. 6 spot. The very next season, his first as coach of the Bull-

dogs, Wallace led a struggling team up the path of respectability by posting a 20-9 mark and landing a spot in the final Volvo Tennis/ITCA Top 25 poll. In 1987, just two years removed from a losing record, Georgia advanced to the national championship match. Although they didn’t win it that year, the Bulldogs would have their day.

NCAA Champions The 1994 season ranks as one of the most dominant ever in women’s tennis history. It found Georgia on the champion’s pedestal in every major team tournament possible: NCAA Champions, USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Champions, and SEC regular season and tournament champions. Top that all off with a 27-2 overall record including a perfect 14-0 SEC mark and a season sweep of arch-rival Florida and it’s easy to see why Wallace was named coach of the year. The 2000 Bulldogs went 27-2, winning the Southeastern Conference title and the NCAA National Championship. In the title match on the campus of Pepperdine, Georgia dethroned the defending champion Stanford Cardinal 5-4, snapping a 48-match winning streak. Wallace was named the Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year.

USTA/ITA National Team Indoors Under Wallace, the Bulldogs have been among the most successful teams at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The annual event attracts the nation’s finest programs. The Bulldogs have won the title three times (1994, 1995, 2002) and have reached at least the semifinals 15 times.

Developing Talent His record for developing players and having them maximize their potential has been evident throughout his tenure. In 2013, the Bulldogs won their ninth regular season SEC championship after going 24-4 and clinching its third consecutive 20plus win season. The Bulldogs went undefeated at home (14-0) for the first time since 2009 and 12th time in program history. In 2001, Agata Cioroch arrived from Poland and played No. 5 for

Head Coach Jeff Wallace the Bulldogs as a freshman. Two years later, she became Georgia’s top talent and in 2004 was the No. 1-ranked player in college tennis for much of the season. Cioroch concluded her career as a five-time All-American with two grand slam singles titles. Strong doubles teams are a key component for a successful college tennis team. There have been six Bulldog tandems under Wallace to finish the season ranked No. 1. In 2009, two of Georgia’s top players were freshmen: Chelsey Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist, and by the end of the year they had earned All-America honors. Gullickson was named the ITA National Rookie of the Year, advanced to the NCAA Singles semifinals and tied a school record with 69 combined wins. Gullickson and Gilchrist became the first freshmen in school history to play No. 1 doubles in the lineup. In 2010, the pair earned All-America honors again and Gullickson became the second Bulldog to win an NCAA singles title in Athens under Wallace and the third overall in the history of the program. She would finish her career in 2012 as the school’s first ever eight-time All-American and own the record for victories. Meanwhile, Lauren Herring became the fourth Bulldog under Wallace to be named SEC Freshman of the Year and the sophomore All-SEC tandem of Maho Kowase and Lilly Kimbell posted a school record of their own by going 22-0 at No. 3. While the depth of talent can vary each season, the results remain consistent. This was no more evident than in 2002. Despite having only one player earn All-America honors, Georgia went undefeated during the regular season, won the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor title, the SEC championship and

Family A native of Portland, Ore., Wallace is married to the former Sabina Marie Horne. They have two children, Brittany Sabina (24) and Jarryd Jeffrey (22). Brittany is a graduate of Valdosta State and working in Atlanta while Jarryd is training full-time as a sprinter for the U.S. Paralympic Team. Jarryd competed in the 2012 Paralympics in London.. In November of 2011, Jarryd, a world record holder, captured a gold medal in the 100m race at the Parapan American Games in Mexico as a member of the United States Paralympic Team. Sabina, a former All-SEC distance runner at Georgia, was inducted into the North Bay (Ontario, Canada) Sports Hall of Fame in 1996. She has continued to run competitively and has helped Wallace train for road races and marathons. Sabina is the track representative for Georgia’s “G” club, an alumni association for University of Georgia letter-winners. Also, Wallace received the 2002 Distinguished Alumni Award from the Recreation and Leisure Studies department of the University of Georgia’s College of Education.

Assistant Coach Drake Bernstein

Drake bernstein Assistant Coach | 2nd Season Georgia ‘11

Drake Bernstein enters his second year as UGA assistant women’s tennis coach in 2013-14. A member of the 2008 national champion Georgia men’s tennis team, Bernstein was named to his current position in July of 2012. Last season, Bernstein helped Georgia to a 24-4 record, an NCAA Quarterfinals and a final ranking of No. 5. He also helped the program win its first SEC Championship since 2009. A native of nearby Winder, Ga., Bernstein returned to Georgia prior to the 2012-13 campaign after spending one season as an assistant coach for the University of Alabama women’s tennis team. The Crimson Tide finished the season No. 11 - their highest final ranking in program history. Alabama posted an 18-5 record, claimed the SEC Western Division with a 10-1 league mark and played host to an NCAA Regional for the first time in school history. Bernstein graduated from the University of Georgia in May 2011 with a degree in sports studies. He compiled a career record of 112-44 in singles and 84-56 in doubles and is one of only 14 players in Bulldog history to win over 100 career singles matches. As a senior, he earned All-SEC Second Team honors and was the recipient of the Dick Copas Leadership Award while serving as a team captain. 2013 Season review 2013 SEASON REVIEW: Georgia (24-4, 12-1 SEC), No. 5 Final Ranking SEASON IN REVIEW: The Bulldogs made their 27th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, falling in the NCAA Quarterfinals to No. 12 Stanford, 4-1. Georgia beat Winthrop (First Round), Arizona State (Second Round) and Clemson (Round of 16) en route to its 21st quarterfinal appearance in program history. Georgia is 67-25 all-time in the NCAA Championships. Georgia went 21-3 throughout the regular season, knocking off nine Top-25 opponents, including six away from the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The Bulldogs won their ninth SEC Championship, after going 13-1 in SEC competition. Highlights from the SEC slate included wins at No. 3 Texas A&M and No. 8 Alabama. Georgia’s potential was noticed early on after it started the season by reaching the semifinals of the National Team Indoor Championships before falling to No. 1 UCLA, 4-1. It beat No. 11 Texas, 4-2, in the round of 16 and No. 7 Cal, 4-1 in the quarterfinals. The Bulldogs’ final 24-4 record gave them their 21st 20+ season in program history. They finished the season ranked No. 5 in the national ranking. The Bulldogs were ranked inside the top-five nine different times during 2013. BULLDOGS IN NCAA SINGLES AND DOUBLES: Sophomore Lauren Herring and junior Maho Kowase both advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA singles tournament. They’re the seventh and eighth Bulldogs to advance to the quarterfinals since 2000. In doubles, junior Kate Fuller and freshman Silvia Garcia also advanced to the quarterfinals. Georgia has now had at least one team in the quarterfinal round each of the last four years. SEC CHAMPIONS: Georgia clinched its ninth regular season SEC championship (1983, `89, `90, `94, 2000, `02, `07, `09). It’s only the fourth time in history that both the men and women’s team’s have won the SEC regular season in the same year. GEORGIA IN THE FINAL RANKINGS: For the second consecutive year, Georgia finished the season ranked inside the top-five. The Bulldogs ended the year with three ranked singles players and four ranked doubles pairs. Herring and Kowase anchored the top of the Bulldog lineup. Herring, who earned SEC Freshman of the Year honors in 2012, is ranked seventh nationally sporting a 38-7 record this year. She beat nine Top-30 opponents. Kowase, who had a 38-10 record, was ranked 21st in the country. She went undefeated in conference play, racking up the most conference wins of anyone in the SEC. She had a teamhigh nine match clinchers. Garcia, ranked No. 82 in the country, and had been playing at the three spot since enrolling in January went 24-4 last season--a best among SEC freshman. In doubles, Fuller and Garcia, went 26-4 last season, finishing as the nation’s secondranked doubles tandem. Fuller, who is now the new Georgia record holder for doubles victories in a season (40), is also ranked with Herring (No. 51). Georgia’s court two duo of Herring and Kowase came in at No. 48 in the latest rankings. Kowase and Lilly Kimbell are ranked No. 83 with a 9-3 record. Since August, Georgia played 14 different doubles pairings.

IN THE NUMBERS: Here are some interesting statistics from the 2013 season: • Georgia finished with a combined 46 wins the last two seasons, the best since 2009-10. • Georgia finished with a .807 singles winning percentage (among its top six players) and a .880 doubles winning percentage (among its top three teams). Both totals are the best since doubles moved to being played before singles in 2001. Ignoring the format change, the next best year would have been Georgia’s 2000 National Championship season (.733/.750). • On the topic of winning percentages, freshman, Silvia Garcia had team-bests in both singles (.857) and doubles (.892). • Freshmen accounted for nearly 35% of the team’s singles wins, combining to go 58-21 (.734), almost exclusively in the spring. • Home Sweet Home...Georgia went a perfect 14-0 at home this season for 12th time in program history. It last happened in 2009. 2012-13 HONORS AND AWARDS: • Four members of the Georgia women’s tennis team were named to All-SEC teams. Herring and Kowase were named to the All-SEC First Team, and Fuller and Garcia were named to the All-SEC Second Team. Garcia was also named to the conference’s All-Freshman Team. • Kowase went 3-0 in April 12-14, including both match clinchers, to earn SEC Player of the Week honors. The Kashiwa, Chiba, Japan native capped a perfect SEC singles slate (12-0) and was riding a 13-match winning streak. • Fuller was one of nine SEC women’s tennis players to be named to SEC Community Service team, which highlights athletes from the SEC who give back to their community through service. Ensuring the Future of UGA Athletics

The Athletic Scholarship Endowment Program was instituted to allow supporters of the University of Georgia Athletic Association to invest in the educational opportunities of UGA student-athletes. The program is vital to the future of Georgia Athletics by providing the long-term solution of keeping pace with escalating expenses. A gift to establish a scholarship provides income towards funding a scholarship each year and permanently memorializes the donor or any individual whose honor the scholarship is named. A full scholarship is endowed through a gift of $150,000. There are four women’s tennis scholarship endowments including one established by the UGAAA in honor of the 2000 team which won both the NCAA and SEC titles. For more information about the Athletic Scholarship Endowment Program or other giving opportunities, please contact the UGAA Development office at (877) 423-2947.
