SEASON PREVIEW

Q&A with head coach Billy Lesesne Georgia head soccer coach Billy Lesesne is entering his first season at the helm of the Bulldogs. Lesesne spent the previous 14 seasons as an assistant at Duke University. Georgia opens the season with an exhibition game at home against Furman on Aug. 15. The regular season opener is slated for Aug. 21 at High Point. Lesesne offered the following comments leading up to his first season at UGA. On the upcoming season… “We report on Aug. 4, and the first day of training is Aug. 5. Ten days later we play an exhibition game at home against Furman. We are really excited about getting the team together and ready to get things going. We have a challenging schedule. We have a good solid group returning and we are going to find ways to create scoring opportunities. We hope to get some good results early in the season and carry that over into SEC play.” On the strength of the team… “I think it’s our depth. We have a large roster, and we’ve always said that you have to play as a team to win as a team. I think the players have really bought into that mentality that we are stronger collectively than we are as individuals. Louise Hogrell was outstanding at goal last year as a freshman. She started every match last year. There are a lot of players returning across the back line, so hopefully our defense will be nice and solid. We have some new faces up top that we’re excited about generating opportunities for us. Our depth is going to be a key for us.” On the transition to being head coach after many years as an assistant at Duke… “I felt I was ready for it. In 14 years at Duke, I felt like we had a lot of success there and I learned under an amazing head coach in Robbie Church. He’s an excellent head coach, but an even better person. Having worked with him for so long, I felt like I was ready to take the next step and take on a new set of challenges. I felt really prepared working with him and working with the quality of student-athletes that we had at Duke. When the Georgia opportunity opened up, having played against Georgia several times and having been to the facilities here, that was a really important draw. The SEC is coming off arguably its best year ever with eight teams making the NCAA Tournament and Texas A&M getting the final four. You see it as a league that is up-and-coming and had really strong performances and watching from afar, you can see across the board quite a strong commitment in the conference to the success of women’s soccer. Georgia wasn’t alone in that, and once getting on campus and meeting the people, it really sealed it for me – the dedication of the administration, not just from the monetary support, but the friendliness of the people and how they are dedicated and driven to help you success. The support that our athletes get academically, and the resources that are available athletically really blew me away, so I feel fortunate to be in this position and work with the young ladies in the spring. I feel blessed to be in this position.” Expectations for this season… “We made significant advancement in the spring in the style we want to play. It was a

transition for all of us. A new staff comes in with a different, so it was a learning process for both players and coaches. I felt we made significant progress during the spring, and now is the chance to see how far we can take this. I feel like there is a lot of talent on this team. We’re going to have to win collectively. We don’t want it to come down to just individuals because there are a lot of really talented teams but we want to make sure that collectively as a team we perform well.” On the 2015 schedule… “The schedule sets up really well to test us early. Five out of our first six games are against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last year, so we’ll find out pretty early how prepared we are and how focused we are against really good competition before we step into SEC play. I think everything sets up to be a good challenge for us. From what I’ve found working with this team, they enjoy challenges. That’s why I think we can be successful this year.”
