2017 SEASON PREVIEW
2017 SEASON PREVIEW: PLAY FOR EACH OTHER There is a different vibe going around the Turner Soccer Complex. It is a spirit and intensity from coaches and studentathletes that’s echoing in the locker room and on the field, providing a constant energy to keep striving for higher goals. The grandstands, pressbox, and benches reconstruction project has given the complex a much-needed facelift and provides a new feel to the program, making everyone eager to work. “Optimism is high as the season approaches,” head coach Billy Lesesne said. “We are excited for the opportunity to play in the newly renovated Turner Soccer Complex while preparing our team to be just as exciting on the field. This team is a blend of youth and experience that is maturing and growing closer together each day. Our staff continues to thrive on the passion that this team is developing and we look forward to the days ahead where we are able to meet the challenges of our rigorous schedule. This season holds great promise as we look forward to representing the University of Georgia and all of the tremendous soccer Bulldog fans everywhere.” Lesesne and his staff will work with a team that consists of 16 returners and 12 newcomers, with the roster being top and bottom heavy with seniors and freshmen. The 2017 roster looks drastically different than it did a year ago. The Bulldogs lost key players with a large graduating class, including the leading scorer for the past two seasons in Marion Crowder, however, Lesesne feels senior Kelsey Killean is ready to step into that role. “There’s going to be a balance at the forward position, but when Kelsey Killean was healthy last year she scored at a decent clip,” Lesesne said. “She came in to training yesterday and had the highest score of our beep test. She has come in fit and that is going to be the key-- to keep her fit and healthy. She’s a player that stretches defenses. By numbers we have more forwards than we did last year. I think it’s going to be somewhat by committee, so we need to get players to play with her.” Killean is ready for the challenge, but knows it’s going to be a collective effort in order for the team to achieve goals of post season action. “We hope a lot of freshmen can step up and fill the shoes of some key players that we lost last year,” senior Kelsey Killean said. “We all have adapted the attitude that we just want to score. It doesn’t matter who scores it-- a goal is a goal and a win is a win. We are all going to help and play for each other, which is our motto for the year. Everyone was willing to do the work in the summer and it is showing now as we prepare for the season.”

TURNER SOCCER COMPLEX
The Turner Soccer Complex is the home of the Bulldogs’ soccer and softball programs. The soccer portion of the complex opened September 1, 1998 when Georgia played host to Mercer, winning 1-0. In 2000, the UGA Soccer Stadium served as the site of the Southeastern Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament. Host school Georgia welcomed thousands of fans, several media members, and the other seven competing teams and staffs to Athens for the four-day event. The Bulldogs felt right at home as they advanced to their first-ever tournament final, facing eventual champion Florida in front of 2,265 fans, the fourth largest crowd in facility history. In 2017, a full reconstruction of the grandstand and press box took place. The press box has ample room for media personnel, as well as game day operations staff, a TV booth, and radio booths for both home and away teams. Additionally, there are two large platforms on either side of the press box for cameras and VIP. In 2005, the stadium saw the addition of a new DAKTRONICS scoreboard with a digital video and graphics display. Some of the new equipment’s capabilities include the display of video headshots of players and coaches, highlight videos and promotional and crowd-pumping messages. Georgia played host to the first and second rounds of the 2007 NCAA Tournament at the UGA Soccer Stadium, and also played host to the Georgia Nike Invitational from 2007-10. In 2006, the Georgia Soccer locker room and offices were renamed the Turner Soccer Complex, recognizing the contributions and support received from the Hoyt “Jack” Turner family of Athens. Turner’s significant financial contributions have helped to provide the Georgia soccer program with the top-notch facility that it now enjoys. Turner is a former Georgia baseball (1951) and basketball (1951-52) player who also has served as the volunteer chairman of the Athletic Scholarship Endowment Program. In addition to its contributions made to the soccer program, the Turner family has endowed 10 scholarships for football, men’s and women’s basketball, gymnastics and baseball. A 1953 graduate of UGA’s Terry College of Business, Turner received a Distinguished Service Award from the college in 2002. The retired chairman of American Funds Distributors, he established the Turner Family Foundation in support of local charities.

“
Billy Lesesne was introduced as the fifth head coach of the Georgia women’s soccer team on December 16, 2014, after serving as the associate head coach at Duke University.
In his second season at the helm of the Bulldogs, Lesesne saw several highs and lows. Injuries plagued the team, but the Bulldogs were playing their best soccer in the final stretch of the season. Georgia played to a close 3-2 record in the final five games of the regular season, falling just short of postseason action.
In his first season as head coach Lesesne guided the 2015 Bulldogs to heights that UGA had never been before. On Sept. 27, 2015 Lesesne coached the Bulldogs to a 2-1 victory over No. 4 Texas A&M, marking the highest-ranked team a Georgia squad has ever defeated and the first in school history against the Aggies. The Bulldogs later went on the road and secured crucial back-to-back road wins against Vanderbilt and No. 16 Auburn. Georgia earned a No. 9-seed to the SEC Tournament in UGA’s 17th overall appearance in the conference tournament.
Under Lesesne’s direction, two Bulldogs moved up in the Georgia soccer record books, with Marion Crowder earning the third spot in career goals with 29 and Louise Hogrell pushing into the fifth spot for shutout victories with 14. Additionally, Lauren Tanner landed tied for seventh after dishing out seven assists in one season. Additionally, at the conclusion of the 2016 regular season, seniors Marion Crowder and Caroline Waters were named to All-SEC teams. Crowder was selected to the first team as an at-large forward, while Waters earned a spot on the second team as a defender.
Under Lesesne’s tutelage, two Bulldogs earned postseason 2015 All-SEC honors. Caroline Waters was named AllSEC Second Team, while Sydney Shultis garnered All-SEC Freshman Team recognition.

A late surge falls short of postseason action
The 2016 Georgia soccer campaign came to an end at the conclusion of the regular season. The Bulldogs finished with a 6-11-1 overall record, and a 3-8 mark in the Southeastern Conference. Georgia ended the regular season in the 11th spot of the SEC standings, putting the team just shy of a bid to the conference tournament. Georgia won its final game of the season on the road at Kentucky, marking the team’s first and only win away from Athens. The Bulldogs scored three goals in the second half and were one minute away from completing a shutout as Georgia defeated Kentucky 3-1 at the Bell Soccer Complex. The second season under head coach Billy Lesesne saw several highs and lows throughout the year. Injuries plagued the team, but it was undeniable that the Bulldogs were playing their best soccer in the final stretch of the season. The year began with a tie against Oklahoma State after double overtime at home before the Bulldogs traveled to then-No. 10 Clemson, falling 3-1 to the Tigers. Georgia returned home for back-to-back wins against Samford and Cal-State Fullerton. After two tough losses against USC and Iowa State at the Auburn Soccer Classic, Georgia started conference play on the road at then-No. 15 South Carolina. The Bulldogs fell 3-0 to the Gamecocks, who went on to win the regular-season conference title. Georgia bounced back two days later with a victory over in-state rival Kennesaw State. The Bulldogs were back on the road the following week to take on the Aggies of Texas A&M in a close 1-0 match under Friday Night Lights.

2016 SEASON RECAP Georgia opened its home conference slate with two losses. The Bulldogs were knotted 0-0 with the Volunteers at halftime, but an early second half goal by Tennessee put Georgia on its heels and the team couldn’t recover. Georgia hosted Auburn that Sunday and carried a 2-1 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Bulldogs could not hold on as the Tigers walked away with a 4-3 victory.
Senior Marion Crowder was Georgia’s leading scorer with eight goals, bringing her career total to 29. This puts in her in the third spot of the Georgia record books for career goals. Junior Kelsey Killean earned her spot in the starting lineup and proved to be an effective asset of the Georgia attack. Killean scored five goals, made two assists, and took 18 shots this season. At the conclusion of the 2016 regular season, seniors Marion Crowder and Caroline Waters were named to All-SEC teams. Crowder was selected to the first team as an at-large forward, while Waters earned a spot on the second team as a defender.
The Bulldogs’ hard work and continued effort paid off when Georgia claimed its first SEC victory of the season with a 3-0 win over LSU at home. Georgia took an early lead in the 7th minute Georgia's Record when . . . and did not relinquish pressure, scoring one more in the first half, and sealing the victory with a third goal in the 57th minute.
