LIZ MURPHEY COLLEGIATE CLASSIC The list of golfers who have competed collegiately in the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic reads like a “Who’s Who” of women’s golf, including LPGA Hall of Famers Beth Daniel, Betsy King and Julie Inkster. The LMCC, one of the oldest continuous sporting events in all of women’s intercollegiate athletics, will be contested for the 47th time on April 11-13, 2019. The event began in 1973 as the Georgia Invitational before becoming the Women’s Southern Intercollegiates from 1977-94. In 1995, it was renamed in honor of Liz Murphey, UGA’s Hall of Fame golf coach and long-time Senior Woman Administrator. Georgia has enjoyed much success protecting its home turf. The Bulldogs have won 14 team titles and produced 12 medalists.
In 2014, the Liz Murphey altered its format to feature stroke play and match play in advance of a similar change for the 2015 NCAA Championships. Seven teams from the next three Liz Murpheys went on to reach match play at the NCAAs later that season. In 2015, Stanford competed in the consolation bracket at the LMCC but went on to win the national title. LIZ MURPHEY TRIBUTE A TRUE PIONEER IN WOMEN’S ATHLETICS Liz Murphey was one of the leading figures in the evolution and development of women’s intercollegiate athletics both on the national level and at the University of Georgia. A Newnan, Ga., native, Murphey was not only an outstanding women’s golf coach but also led the overall Lady Bulldog women’s sports program to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s as its senior woman administrator. She died November 23, 2005, following a short illness. “Liz was certainly one of the national pioneers in women’s athletics and one that provided the real foundation for the program here at Georgia,” said former UGA Director of Athletics Vince Dooley. “Her work at Georgia was recognized across the country both as an administrator and golf coach.” Murphey joined the university faculty in 1967 as an assistant professor of physical education and women’s golf coach. She coordinated the women’s club sports program until being named assistant athletic director for women’s sports in 1978. When UGA officially added women’s golf as an intercollegiate sport in the fall of 1978, Murphey already had a solid foundation in place. She led the Lady Bulldogs to 21 team and 18 individual titles from 1978-86.
Under Murphey, Georgia finished in the top 10 at each national championship from 1979-83, including second at the 1981 AIAWs and third at the 1983 NCAAs. Additionally, Terri Moody and Cindy Schreyer won individual national titles in 1981 and 1984, respectively. Murphey was the first-ever NGCA National Coach of the Year in 1984, and she was a charter member of that organization’s Hall of Fame. Two of her most prestigious honors were the 1996 Rolex Meritorious Service Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Collegiate Women’s Athletic Adminstators in 2003. Under her leadership, Georgia won eight of the 14 SEC women’s all-sports awards, secured four national team championships and captured an additional 31 individual national titles. Murphey retired from the University in May 1996. She was inducted into the UGA Athletic Association’s Circle of Honor – the school’s highest tribute paid to former athletes or coaches – in 2001. Murphey’s legacy lives on. For more than four decades, Georgia has hosted the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, appropriately one of the nation’s oldest women’s collegiate athletic events in any sport.
Liz’s Legacy Liz Murphey’s fingerprints remain on UGA women’s athletics long after she retired. Murphey hired current Georgia women’s head coaches Jack Bauerle (swimming and diving) and Jeff Wallace (tennis), as well as previous standouts Andy Landers (basketball) and Suzanne Yoculan (gymnastics). That quartet has combined to lead 19 teams to NCAA Championships and 44 squads to SEC Championships in their respective sports. She also brought in Beans Kelly as her assistant coach in 1986 and handed the reins to the golf program over shortly thereafter. Kelly led Georgia to eight SEC titles and eight top-10 finishes at the NCAAs.
PUTTING UGA ON THE MAP
Hosting the 1981 AIAW Nationals was perhaps Liz Murphey’s finest hour as a coach and administrator. Terri Moody (upper right) captured the first-ever national title in UGA women’s athletics history and the Lady Bulldogs finished second in the team field (right). 2018-19 georgia golf • 5
2018-19 OUTLOOK ‘‘SPONGES’’ LOOK TO EXPAND GEORGIA’S TROPHY CASE Josh Brewer doesn’t have trouble sleep- vidual winner’s circle by capturing medalist notched top-10s at the World Junior Golf
ing. He rests his head every night comfortably knowing he has a talented group of golfers hoping to lead the Georgia Bulldogs to national prominence again this season. But there’s a new task Brewer completes every night before his day is complete. “I know every night before I go to bed I have to think through the next day’s practice,” Brewer said. “I know someone reading this might think ‘Golf practice, really?’ But there are concepts behind it. Our team this season needs and wants that. They’d be disappointed if I didn’t have a new challenge for them every day. It’s made it really enjoyable. They’re like sponges. For me, you couldn’t ask for anything more as a coach.” The Bulldogs will compete this spring with only six golfers on their roster – one of those a former team manager – but Brewer likes the makeup of this squad. “This is a group that really wants to learn,” he said. “It’s the first squad I’ve had that I’m mentally tired when I leave the course every night. They are trying to pick my brain and become better and understand the game of golf more every day. As a coach, that’s exciting and a challenge.” Headlining Georgia’s roster is senior All-American Rinko Mitsunaga, who has been key to the Bulldogs’ winning ways of late. During her first three seasons in Athens, Mitsunaga helped Georgia claim 10 team titles, including the 2016 NCAA Bryan Regional. She also visited the indi-
honors at the Lady Bulldog Invitational as a freshman. “Rinko provides us with such a maturity factor,” Brewer said. “She’s one of the premier golfers in the country and has proven that throughout her careers with the scores she’s posted and the accolades she’s earned. “It’s not just on the course, though,” Brewer added. “It’s knowing what to expect when we travel, how the airports are handled, meals, everything we do when we’re at tournaments. It’s nice having a leader from that standpoint. Their golf will take care of itself. She’s really talented.” Mitsunaga contributed 93.3 percent counting rounds and competed in nine of 10 events last season, missing only the season opener while she was at LPGA QSchool. In her first three seasons, she has posted top-20 individual efforts in well over half of her tournaments for UGA (19 of 31). In many ways, Brewer feels like Mitsunaga is a “seventh-year senior.” “I can’t believe Rinko is a senior,” Brewer said. “I’ve been here seven years and it seems like we’ve been together for seven years because I started recruiting her as soon as I landed at the Atlanta airport. When she was being recruited, we talked about coming here to try to do something really special. I told her that if she didn’t think we could compete at a national level not to come. She wanted that challenge and helped put us back on the map. She wants the same ending I do. I’m going to do everything I can to help that happen.” The talent to make those aspirations a reality continues throughout the roster. Junior Gabriela Coello was one of two golfers to represent the Bulldogs at every team event last season. During the spring, she posted both her best individual finish at Georgia (seventh at the Gold Rush) and relation-to-par score (3-over at the 3M Augusta Invitational. The Bulldogs’ lineup also include two pairs of newcomers. Kelsey Kurnett and Harmie Constantino and have been with the Bulldogs all season, while Jenny Bae and Jo-Hua Hung joined the team in January. Constantino, a freshman, sports an extremely impressive junior career. She Georgia’s roster features significant experience competing at the highest level, whether that be senior Rinko Mitsunaga (left), a 2017 All-American, or freshman Harmie Constantino (right), who has won seven Philippine national titles.

Championships in 2016 (fourth) and 2017 (10th). Constantino also equaled an AJGA record by winning three consecutive tournaments in the summer of 2016. Kurnett served as the Bulldogs’ team manager during her first two years on campus but has now moved onto the roster. She was a solid prep golfer at Alpharetta High School, including finishing third individually at the Georgia AAAAAA State Tournament as a senior to lead the Lady Raiders to a runner-up team finish. Bae won the Georgia Class 7A state title last year as a junior at Collins Hill High School but opted to enroll at UGA and begin her collegiate career early. She captured medalist honors at three AJGA events and was a 2016 AJGA Rolex Junior All-America honorable mention honoree. Prior to arriving in Athens, Hung competed in 54 events over the past three years, with seven wins and 26 top-10 finishes. On U.S. soil, she won the 2016 World Junior Golf Series’ American Junior, the 2016 Aaron Baddeley International Junior, the 2016 AJGA Junior at Centennial and the 2017 Folds of Honor Junior Championship hosted by Bob Estes. “We feel like we have the talent to get over that final hurdle that we’ve been trying to clear of bringing home a trophy in the postseason,” Brewer said. “We’ve done it once before at Regionals, but we’d like to bring one home from the tournaments before and after Regionals.”

JUNIOR ALL-AMERICANS PLENTIFUL FOR BULLDOGS Georgia seniors Rinko Mitsunaga and Bailey Tardy are among a long list of Bulldog golfers who arrived in Athens following celebrated junior careers. All told, 23 Georgia golfers have combined to secure 60 AJGA Junior All-America certificates. Mitsunaga and Tardy combined to earn six of those honors. Mitsunaga was an honorable mention selection in both 2011 and 2013 before securing second-team recognition in 2014. Tardy also was a 2013 honorable mention pick and then garnered first-team status in both 2014 and 2015. Jillian Hollis, their former classmate who turned professional following her junior year at UGA, also was a first-team All-American in 2014. Vicki Goetze was a six-time first-team AJGA All-American and also was named National Golfer of the Year in 1988, 1989 and 1990. Goetze, of course, went on to an equally impressive two-year collegiate career when she captured medalist honors at the 1992 NCAA Championships and won individual titles in seven of 22 tourneys.

2017-18 SEASON NOTEBOOK BULLDOGS ENJOY EXTREMELY STRONG “2018” CAMPAIGN The simple hyphen is probably enough to separate the differences between the “2017” and “2018” portions of Georgia women’s golf’s most recent season. The Bulldogs struggled mightily during the fall campaign and finished 2017 in the mid-70s of the Golfweek and Golfstat national rankings. Georgia rallied to finish the season ranked No. 33 by both. In the end, the Bulldogs shot 2-over 866 and finished eighth at the NCAA Regional in Tallahassee, two spots off the cut to advance to the NCAA Championships. “When your season ends, it’s hard,” head coach Josh Brewer said. “We gave it everything we had. Hats off to the six schools who are going to get out of here. Sometimes you can play pretty well and have an empty feeling in your stomach.” Georgia’s fall performances were largely due to the fact that the Bulldogs were playing without their three returning AllAmericans – Jillian Hollis, Rinko Mitsunaga and Bailey Tardy – while they took part in LPGA Q School in August, October and November. With the return of Hollis and Mitsunaga (Tardy did not play in the spring due to an injury) and improved performances of senior Isabella Skinner, Georgia was much more competitive during 2018 and captured team victories at the Gold Rush and the 3M Augusta Invitational. “It wasn’t the best fall in Georgia history, but it’s the reason we played well in the spring,” Brewer said. “We had to make some adjustments to our lineup. That provided an opportunity for someone to step up. People had to get used to travel and competing at the collegiate level, and now we’re seeing the benefits of that.” Record wise, Georgia was just 11-38 in the fall. In the spring, the Bulldogs were 71-26-1. Of those spring losses, 14 were to top-10 teams and four of the other five were to top-25 squads.

Much like the Bulldogs’ performances on team leaderboards, Georgia’s team stroke average from 2017 to 2018 were significantly different. After posting an average of 300.55 during their 11 fall rounds, the Bulldogs improved to a 292.48 clip covering 21 spring loops.
Hollis breaks UGA average record Jillian Hollis bettered the Bulldogs’ season stroke average record by a significant chunk during the 2017-18 season, .48 per round to be exact. Hollis compiled a 71.04 mark, finishing the season at a combined 22-under over 26 rounds with 18 par-or-better efforts and six scores in the 60s. That bettered the previous best of 71.52 by Marta Silva Zamora en route to winning 2011 National Golfer of the Year honors. In the process, she equaled the lowest single-round score in school history – in amazingly similar circumstances to the original mark. Hollis fired a 7-under 65 to tie the record previously established by Vicki Goetze on the same Karsten Course layout in the final round of the 1992 NCAA Championships at Arizona State. Hollis came a stroke shy of extending her winning streak to three tournaments when she shot 6-under 210 to finish a shot behind co-medalists Cheyenne Knight and Lauren Stephenson at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. Those performances boosted Hollis to All-America honors for the third-straight year. She became just the fourth three-time All-American in Georgia’s history. Skinner enjoys stellar senior season Senior Isabella Skinner was a major contributor to Georgia’s success throughout the 2017-18 season. Skinner played in 14 events during her first three campaigns in Athens, posting a 77.60 stroke average. Skinner played in all 11 team events during her final campaign with the Bulldogs, compiling a 75.75 average. Skinner was even more impressive during the spring, with a 74.90 average that equated to 91.4 percent counting rounds. Skinner’s final putt of her collegiate career was a memorable one, a 35-foot birdie at the NCAA Regional in Tallahassee. “You just have to think there are bigger things than golf happening when you see a senior roll in a 35-foot putt on the last hole of their collegiate career,” head coach Josh Brewer said. “It was pretty cool. For all she’s been through, playing one event as a junior and playing every tournament as senior, it was neat. I’m glad she went ahead and made it because I don’t know if she could’ve made a tap-in. She was balling, and I was too.”

LIZ MURPHEY (1978-85)
Liz Murphey, a leader in the evolution of women’s intercollegiate athletics, had been at UGA for a decade when the school named women’s golf an intercollegiate sport. She led Georgia top-10 finishes at each national championship from 1979-83 and coached Terri Moody and Cindy Schreyer to individual national titles. Murphey also served as SWA for 18 years and guided UGA women’s athletics to six SEC All-Sports titles from 1984-94.
BEANS KELLY (1985-00)
Never labeled as predictable, Beans Kelly resigned in 2000 while seemingly on top of the college golf world. Under her tutelage, the Lady Bulldogs won 43 team and 33 individual titles, including Vicki Goetze’s 1992 NCAA title; captured seven SEC crowns; and posted eight NCAA top-10 finishes. She was named National Coach of the Year in 1998 and in 2000 became the youngest coach inducted into the NGCA Hall of Fame.
TODD McCORKLE (2000-07) Todd McCorkle arrived in Athens just months after leading Arizona to the national championship. The next spring, McCorkle coached Georgia to the program’s first-ever NCAA team title and became just the second coach in Division I history to win back-to-back NCAA championships at two schools. McCorkle also led the Bulldogs to two SEC titles and seven of his Bulldog golfers combined to earn 11 AllAmerica certificates. KELLEY HESTER (2007-12)
Kelley Hester returned to her alma mater in June 2007 and furthered the storied tradition of Georgia Golf. She led the Bulldogs to a pair of top-20 finishes in her five campaigns in Athens. Individually, Marta Silva Zamora blossomed under Hester’s tutelage to become the consensus National Player of the Year in 2011 and five different Bulldogs combined to secure eight AllAmerica certificates during Hester’s tenure. 2018-19 georgia golf • 19

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 1981
Terri Moody moved atop the leaderboard midway through the second round of the 1981 AIAW Nationals at the UGA Golf Course and held off a late charge from Miami’s Patti Rizzo to win Georgia’s first-ever individual national title by a female studentathlete in any sport. Moody was among a group of five golfers tied for second following an opening-round 73, but grabbed a one-stroke lead over Rizzo with a 72 on her second loop. Moody, an Athens native who was the first female studentathlete to receive a full athletic scholarship from UGA, maintained that advantage when she TERRI MOODY and Rizzo both carded third1981 AIAW Medalist round 75s. On the final day, Rizzo’s 75 knotted the score and forced a three-hole playoff. Moody completed the trio of holes at 1-under while Rizzo was 1-over.
1984
Cindy Schreyer claimed a dramatic win at the 1984 NCAA Championships, winning a threehole playoff with SMU’s Martha Foyer and Miami’s Michele Bertroitti with a birdie at No. 12. Schreyer had battled Arizona State’s Heather Farr through most of the tournament. Farr carded an opening-round score of 71 at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Tarpon Springs, Fla. Schreyer, who was among seven golfers tied for eighth after the first day, rebounded to break the course record and knot herself with Farr on the leaderboard with a second-round 70. CINDY SCHREYER Farr regained a one-shot lead 1984 NCAA Medalist following the third round. While Schreyer shot 76 in the final round, Foyer and Berteotti carded 75s to force the playoff. Farr slipped to fourth with a 79, two strokes off the playoff-forcing score of 297.
1992
Vicki Goetze turned in one of the most impressive single rounds in the history of women’s collegiate golf en route to capturing top individual honors at the 1992 NCAA Championships on Arizona State University’s Karsten Golf Course. Goetze and Stanford’s Audrey Wooding led following firstround, 3-under 69s; however, Annika Sorenstam of Arizona grabbed a three-shot advantage with a second-round 68. Sorenstam maintained that same margin after both she and Goetze shot 72s on the third day. Goetze then torched the course with a 7-under 65 on the fourth day to top Sorenstam by three. VICKI GOETZE Goetze’s effort still remains as 1992 NCAA Medalist both the low single-round score in NCAA Championships history (though four other golfers have equaled the mark) and the Bulldogs’ low loop all time as well.
2001
The 2001 Bulldogs utilized three days of consistent golf to place themselves in contention and then used a spectacular final-round effort to win UGA’s first-ever national title in women’s golf. Georgia shot 298 and was among three teams tied for fourth after the opening day but climbed to sole possession of third after a second-round 295. The Bulldogs improved to 293 in the third round but still trailed top-ranked Duke by four entering the final 18 holes. Georgia seized contol early in the fourth round, tying the Blue Devils by No. 5 and then surging to a three-shot lead at No. 6. Duke never got closer than two shots thereafter. Georgia clinched the title with steely resolve. After a trio of bogeys at No. 16, UGA played the par-5 No. 17 at 3-under to all but seal the national title. The Bulldogs’ fourth-round score of 290 was six shots better than any other team in the field, as Reilley Rankin and Summer Sirmons carded a pair of 72s, while Laura Henderson and Angela Jerman both shot 73. All four of those Bulldogs finished among the top 18 individuals, with Rankin tying for 10th at 292, Henderson and Jerman both tying for 13th at 294 and Sirmons tied for 18th at 296.
