2017 SEASON PREVIEW
2018 SEASON PREVIEW There’s a different vibe going around the Turner Soccer Complex. There’s a spirit and intensity from coaches and student-athletes that’s echoing in the locker room and on the field, providing a constant energy to keep striving for higher goals. That competitive drive has the Bulldogs working together as one, and as the 2018 season gets set to kick off, this year’s team is set to show that mental and physical growth is on the horizon. “We are in a good place as far as their level of confidence for starting a new season,” head coach Billy Lesesne said. “This team is a blend of youth and experience that is maturing and growing closer together each day. We are focused on our growth and look forward to the challenges our season is going to have in front of us.” Lesesne and his staff will work with a team that consists of 15 returners and 14 newcomers. The 29 player roster is stacked with sophomores and freshmen and a total of only seven upperclassmen- two of which transferred to UGA for this season as graduates. The seasoned sophomores hope to bring more fight and edge as they spread across the field at all positions. Highlighting that crew is Reagan Glisson, Katie Ralys, and Caroline Chipman. Glisson led the team in assists last season, while Ralys boasted two goals and two assists, and Chipman was one of the mainstays on the back line. “We struggled late in the game last season,” Lesesne added. “But we have more depth this year with players that have athletic qualities to help us to be better suited for late half, late game situations. This team certainly has something to prove this season and sometimes it’s hard to erase the memories of a previous season, but we are a new team with so many new faces and skillsets.”

TURNER SOCCER COMPLEX
The Turner Soccer Complex is the home of the Bulldogs’ soccer and softball programs. The soccer portion of the complex opened September 1, 1998 when Georgia played host to Mercer, winning 1-0. In 2000, the UGA Soccer Stadium served as the site of the Southeastern Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament. Host school Georgia welcomed thousands of fans, several media members, and the other seven competing teams and staffs to Athens for the four-day event. The Bulldogs felt right at home as they advanced to their first-ever tournament final, facing eventual champion Florida in front of 2,265 fans, the fourth largest crowd in facility history. In 2017, a full reconstruction of the grandstand and press box took place. The press box has ample room for media personnel, as well as game day operations staff, a TV booth, and radio booths for both home and away teams. Additionally, there are two large platforms on either side of the press box for cameras and VIP. In 2005, the stadium saw the addition of a new DAKTRONICS scoreboard with a digital video and graphics display. Some of the new equipment’s capabilities include the display of video headshots of players and coaches, highlight videos and promotional and crowd-pumping messages. Georgia played host to the first and second rounds of the 2007 NCAA Tournament at the UGA Soccer Stadium, and also played host to the Georgia Nike Invitational from 2007-10. In 2006, the Georgia Soccer locker room and offices were renamed the Turner Soccer Complex, recognizing the contributions and support received from the Hoyt “Jack” Turner family of Athens. Turner’s significant financial contributions have helped to provide the Georgia soccer program with the top-notch facility that it now enjoys. Turner is a former Georgia baseball (1951) and basketball (1951-52) player who also has served as the volunteer chairman of the Athletic Scholarship Endowment Program. In addition to its contributions made to the soccer program, the Turner family has endowed 10 scholarships for football, men’s and women’s basketball, gymnastics and baseball. A 1953 graduate of UGA’s Terry College of Business, Turner received a Distinguished Service Award from the college in 2002. The retired chairman of American Funds Distributors, he established the Turner Family Foundation in support of local charities.

“
This team is a blend of youth and experience that is FOURTH SEASON maturing and growing closer together each day. Our staff continues to thrive on the passion that this team is developing and we look forward to the days ahead where we are able to meet the challenges of our rigorous schedule.
“
Billy Lesesne was introduced as the fifth head coach of the Georgia women’s soccer team on December 16, 2014, after serving as the associate head coach at Duke University. In his first season as head coach Lesesne guided the 2015 Bulldogs to heights that UGA had never been before. On Sept. 27, 2015 Lesesne coached the Bulldogs to a 2-1 victory over No. 4 Texas A&M, marking the highest-ranked team a Georgia squad has ever defeated and the first in school history against the Aggies. The Bulldogs later went on the road and secured crucial back-to-back road wins against Vanderbilt and No. 16 Auburn. Georgia earned a No. 9-seed to the SEC Tournament in UGA’s 17th overall appearance in the conference tournament. Under Lesesne’s tutelage, two Bulldogs earned postseason 2015 All-SEC honors. Caroline Waters was named AllSEC Second Team, while Sydney Shultis garnered All-SEC Freshman Team recognition. In his second season at the helm of the Bulldogs, Lesesne saw several highs and lows. Injuries plagued the team, but

the Bulldogs were playing their best soccer in the final stretch of the season. Georgia played to a close 3-2 record in the final five games of the regular season, falling just short of postseason action. Under Lesesne’s direction, two Bulldogs moved up in the Georgia soccer record books, with Marion Crowder earning the third spot in career goals with 29 and Louise Hogrell pushing into the fifth spot for shutout victories with 14. Additionally, Lauren Tanner landed tied for seventh after dishing out seven assists in one season. Additionally, at the conclusion of the 2016 regular season, seniors Marion Crowder and Caroline Waters were named to All-SEC teams. Crowder was selected to the first team as an at-large forward, while Waters earned a spot on the second team as a defender. Georgia battled numerous injuries in 2017. In what was deemed the fifth toughest schedule in the NCAA and second in the SEC, Georgia went 4-12-2.
HEAD COACH BILLY LESESNE The team played a game for the books against Coastal Carolina on Sept. 10. It was the first time two Bulldogs had a hat trick in the same game. Freshman Mollie Belisle and senior Kelsey Killean led Georgia to a 9-1 victory over the Chanticleers, with four and three goals, respectively. Additionally nine goals are the second most goals scored in one game in Georgia soccer history and the most during the Billy Lesesne era. Georgia finished 2017 ranked third in average attendance (1,446/game) in the SEC and ninth in the NCAA. Lesesne came to UGA following 14 seasons in Durham, the last 11 as the program’s associate head coach. He helped lead the 2011 edition of the Blue Devils to the NCAA College Cup (“Final Four”) and was named the Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year that season. In his 14 seasons at Duke University, the Blue Devils reached a total of 12 NCAA Tournaments, including three straight trips to the “Elite Eight” from 2011-13.
Lesesne began his coaching career at Cambridge Academy in Greenwood, S.C., in 1988, before serving as the assistant men’s coach at the College of Charleston from 1990-91. He also coached the South Carolina Boys’ State ODP team from 1990-95 and the Girls’ ODP team from 1996-99. Lesesne enjoyed a successful playing career, playing three years of professional soccer with the Charleston Battery (USISL/A-League) and four years at Erskine College, where he was an NAIA All-America selection his senior season and an NSCAA All-South Region honoree his last two seasons. He also earned NAIA All-District 6 honors from 1983-86, and was the Jake Todd/Erskine College Senior Athlete Award winner for the 1986-87 school year. He graduated from Erskine in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in biology/natural science.
He previously spent three seasons as an assistant coach before his promotion in the summer of 2004. In addition to his coaching duties at Duke University, Lesesne was a North Carolina ODP state coach and Region III staff coach in 200203. Prior to his time in Durham, Lesesne served as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt for two seasons, guiding the Commodores to the semifinals of the SEC Tournament in 2000.
Lesesne and his wife, Katie, have two daughters, Addison and Victoria, and a son, William.

The 2017 Georgia soccer campaign came to an end at the conclusion of the regular season after completing the ninth-toughest schedule in the NCAA. The Bulldogs finished with a 4-12-2 overall record and a 0-9-1 mark in the Southeastern Conference. Georgia set an attendance record at the new soccer stadium located at the Turner Soccer Complex when 2,457 fans showed up on September 3 to cheer on the Bulldogs against Clemson. UGA ranked 19th in the country in accumulative attendance and sixth in the SEC with 11, 460, while ranking 14th nationally in average attendance and fifth in the SEC with 1,273. Georgia’s two wins in Athens came against High Point and Coastal Carolina. Katie MacGinnitie’s goal in the 70th minute, with a double assist from freshman Caroline Chipman and redshirt-junior Maddie Burdick, lifted the Bulldogs over the Panthers. Georgia’s 9-0 victory over Coastal Carolina on September 10 was one for the books. The impressive nine goals ranks third in program history for goals scored in a game. Additionally, the nine goals have the Bulldogs tied for ninth in the NCAA and second in the SEC for most goals scored in a game for the season. In that game against Coastal Carolina, freshman Mollie Belisle scored four goals and senior Kelsey Killean added

a hat trick of her own to land in the top ranks of the NCAA for goals scored in a game. Belisle is one of eleven players in the NCAA with the most goals scored in a single game with four. She is one of two players from the SEC. Belisle and Killean are among 108 players in the NCAA to record at least a hat trick in a game, along with six other players from the SEC. Georgia improved its performance on the road from a season ago earning two wins and two draws in games away from the Classic City. The Bulldogs played to a 1-1 tie in double overtime against then-No. 3 South Carolina in Columbia in the team’s final road game of the season on October 22. The Gamecocks went on to earn the No. 1 seed of the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Final Four. Senior goalkeeper Louise Hogrell finished the season ranked first in the SEC and 57th in the NCAA in saves per game with 5.25. Hogrell started the season ranked fifth in the Georgia record books for career saves and jumped to second with a total of 346 as a Bulldog.
