LIZ MURPHEY TRIBUTE

A TRUE PIONEER IN WOMEN’S ATHLETICS

Liz Murphey was one of the leading figures in the evolution and development of women’s intercollegiate athletics both on the national level and at the University of Georgia. A Newnan, Ga., native, Murphey was not only an outstanding women’s golf coach but also led the overall Lady Bulldog women’s sports program to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s as its senior woman administrator. She died November 23, 2005, following a short illness. “Liz was certainly one of the national pioneers in women’s athletics and one that provided the real foundation for the program here at Georgia,” said former UGA Director of Athletics Vince Dooley. “Her work at Georgia was recognized across the country both as an administrator and golf coach.” Murphey joined the university faculty in 1967 as an assistant professor of physical education and women’s golf coach. She coordinated the women’s club sports program until being named assistant athletic director for women’s sports in 1978. When UGA officially added women’s golf as an intercollegiate sport in the fall of 1978, Murphey already had a solid foundation in place. She led the Lady Bulldogs to 21 team and 18 individual titles from 1978-86. Under Murphey, Georgia finished in the top 10 at each national

championship from 1979-83, including second at the 1981 AIAWs and third at the 1983 NCAAs. Additionally, Terri Moody and Cindy Schreyer won individual national titles in 1981 and 1984, respectively. Murphey was the first-ever NGCA National Coach of the Year in 1984, and she was a charter member of that organization’s Hall of Fame. Two of her most prestigious honors were the 1996 Rolex Meritorious Service Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Collegiate Women’s Athletic Adminstators in 2003. Under her leadership, Georgia won eight of the 14 SEC women’s all-sports awards, secured four national team championships and captured an additional 31 individual national titles. Murphey retired from the University in May 1996. She was inducted into the UGA Athletic Association’s Circle of Honor – the school’s highest tribute paid to former athletes or coaches – in 2001. Murphey’s legacy lives on. For more than four decades, Georgia has hosted the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, appropriately one of the nation’s oldest women’s collegiate athletic events in any sport.

LIZ’S LEGACY Liz Murphey’s fingerprints remain on UGA women’s athletics long after she retired. Murphey hired current Georgia women’s head coaches Jack Bauerle (swimming and diving) and Jeff Wallace (tennis), as well as previous standouts Andy Landers (basketball) and Suzanne Yoculan (gymnastics). That quartet has combined to lead 19 teams to NCAA Championships and 45 squads to SEC Championships in their respective sports. She also brought in Beans Kelly as her assistant coach in 1986 and handed the reins to the golf program over shortly thereafter. Kelly led Georgia to eight SEC titles and eight top-10 finishes at the NCAAs.

PUTTING UGA ON THE MAP

Hosting the 1981 AIAW Nationals was perhaps Liz Murphey’s finest hour as a coach and administrator. Terri Moody (upper right) captured the first-ever national title in UGA women’s athletics history and the Lady Bulldogs finished second in the team field (right). 2020--21 georgia golf • 5 2020

FALL RECAP BULLDOGS APPRECIATE OPPORTUNITIES TO COMPETE Georgia was a week away from hosting the 48th annual Liz Murphey Collegiate last spring when the world came to an immediate halt with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. For months, the sports world was paused as many wondered if the 2020-21 season would take place in any form. On August 27, just weeks after the Fall Semester began on the UGA campus, the Southeastern Conference announced that there indeed would be college golf in the fall. Shortly thereafter, dates for three SEC-heavy events – Arkansas’ Blessings Collegiate, Mississippi State’s The Ally and Georgia’s own Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic – were released for October and November. Ironically, the status of the 48th annual Liz Murphey was changed from “canceled” to “postponed.” “Six months after it appeared the pandemic would force us to end this long tradition, it is exciting to say we will be hosting the 2020 Liz Murphey,” Georgia coach Josh Brewer said. “We owe many thanks to the leaders at UGA and the SEC who made this a reality. The event will be an SEConly tournament and will allow us to showcase many of the top golfers and teams in the country.” The Bulldogs wrapped up their fall season ranked No. 6 by Golfstat and No. 7 by Golfweek after notching fifth-place finishes at the Blessings and Ally and placing third at the Liz Murphey. “I’m scared somebody will pinch me and I’ll wake up and it’s really not happening,” Brewer said prior to the Blessings event, a nationally televised tournament on the Golf Channel that also included the SEC’s men’s golf teams. “I’m happy for the team and the conference. We’re excited and definitely ready to go tee it up. It’s why we coach and why student-athletes come to college instead of trying to play professional golf. There are a lot of happy people here in the Boyd Center.” When the fall campaign ended, Brewer again was eager to state his appreciativeness. “First of all, we made it through the fall season,” Brewer said enthusiastically after the final round of the Liz Murphey. “To make it through all three tournaments to me speaks to the discipline not only in our program but the programs throughout the SEC. There were guidelines that we all were asked to follow and were willing to do. That’s the first positive. “As far as this weekend, we wanted to win,” Brewer continued. “That’s hard in our sport, though. This was basically an SEC Championship minus a couple of schools.” Georgia accomplished much in the fall but did not succeed in its goal of winning. Still, Brewer saw plenty of positives. The Bulldogs’ deep roster featured no less than eight golfers featured in the final fall edition of the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, led by Jenny Bae at No. 12 and Caroline Craig at No. 19. “We’re going to have a winning record against almost every SEC school going into the off season,” Brewer said. “That includes some teams that are top-5 in the country. There are a lot of positives, but still we have some work to do. We finished fifth, fifth and third. We want to try to win so we need to continue working and not just rest.” 6 • 2020 2020--21 georgia golf

DON MAKES U.S. OPEN DEBUT

Georgia sophomoreo Caterina Don was one of 20 premier amateur golfers who were added to the field for the 2020 U.S. Women’s Open Championship in December at Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas. “It’s an amazing opportunity for me,” Don said. “You grow up looking at (the top players in the world) and now I’m going to get to play with and compete against them. It obviously will be a good test to see where I am. I’m going to use it as an opportunity to learn and see where I can improve. They’re doing things right or they wouldn’t be where they are. I’m going to watch closely because there’s definitely things I can improve upon, not only on the course but in practice and tournament management and things like that. I want to learn so I can be a better golfer.” Don followed a 6-over 77 in the opening round with a 3-over 74 on Friday and missed the cut. There were highlights, however. Don was not alone in Texas as she asked Josh Brewer to serve as her caddy. “If she has a question, I want to be able to answer it right,” Brewer said. “I feel like I have a homework assignment every night, making sure her yardages – and for her it’s meters – are correct. That’s what keeps me kind of restless. She’s the boss this week. I keep asking. What time are we leaving? When do you want to go? How do you want to practice? I’m just here for her. If she tells me to be downstairs at 5:00 a.m. with a cup of coffee, I’ll be downstairs at 5:00 a.m. with a cup of coffee. I think that’s been fun for her, and it’s given her a look at what life is like as a professional.”

Caterina Don and Josh Brewer reversed roles at the U.S. Open, with Georgia’s coach serving as the Bulldog’s caddy.

Don played the Champions Club’s Cypress Creek Course on Thursday and briefly was tied for second on the leaderboard after a birdie at No. 3. “After the first hole, Josh came up to me and said ‘At least you can say you made a par in the U.S. Open.’” Don said. “Two holes later, he said ‘Now you can say you made a birdie and were under-par at the U.S. Open.’”

THREE DOGS HEADED TO ANWA

Georgia will be well represented at the 2021 Augusta National Women’s Amateur...a year later than those Bulldogs expected to compete in the prestigious event. Caterina Don, Isabella Holpfer and Candice Mahe received invitations to the event after all three also earned bids to the 2020 tournament was canceled. Don will be making her second trip a little under two hours east of Athens to compete in Augusta. She finished 12th at the inaugural tournament in 2019 after shooting 2-over 218. Holpfer and Mahe, who will be making their Augusta, earned invites via their World Amateur Rankings. Holpfer has been as high as No. 25 in the world, while Mahe has ascended to No. 30.

19TH SEASON AS A COLLEGE COACH

INDIANA ’98

Josh Brewer has put Georgia women’s golf back into the national spotlight... and he’s eager for even greater success in the future. During his eight seasons in Athens, the Bulldogs have posted 27 tournament victories, with 13 team and 14 individual wins. Headlining that list is a sweep of the 2016 NCAA Bryan Regional when Georgia shot its best-ever score in postseason play (8-under). That mark stood for less than a year, when the Bulldogs carded a 9-under tally at the 2017 SECs. School records have fallen at, well, a record pace on Brewer’s watch. Individually, eight of the top-10 season stroke averages in Georgia history are owned by Bulldogs who played under Brewer, including Jillian Hollis’ school record 71.04 in 2017-18. Hollis also equaled Georgia’s single-round mark by shooting a final-round 7-under 65 en route to winning the PING/ASU Invitational last spring. In addition, Bailey Tardy broke UGA’s 54-hole tournament record by shooting 12-under at the 2015 Windy City Collegiate. On the team front, Georgia has posted its top-three season stroke averages ever. The Bulldogs also have notched seven of their top-10 tourney tallies, headlined by a school-record 19-under at the 2016 Annika Intercollegiate, and 13 of the top-20 single rounds in school history, a list that features a best-ever 13-under at the 2015 Mason Rudolph. All of the aforementioned is quite remarkable considering Brewer’s experiences with intercollegiate athletics appeared to have ended in a storybook fashion two decades ago. As a senior at Indiana, Brewer birdied the final two holes to finish second individually and help the Hoosiers secure a one-stroke victory at the 1998 Big Ten Championships. While Brewer did not know so at the time, the event was the final tournament in both his career and that of legendary coach Sam Carmichael. “That was the last year that a conference championship didn’t earn you an automatic bid to the NCAAs,” Brewer said. “We were ‘on the bubble’ and thought winning the Big Tens would get us in, but it didn’t. Obviously, I was disappointed at the time, but to look back at it now, it was a pretty neat way to wrap up my career as a college golfer.” After winning the 1998 Indiana Am crown that summer, Brewer quickly moved into the business world. He accepted a position as a financial advisor with Linsco/Private Ledger in Indianapolis. Three falls later, Mike Mayer, who moved from assistant to head coach at IU after Carmichael retired, asked Brewer to share his experiences in golf and school and the transition to professional life with the current team. “I just really enjoyed the interaction with the student-athletes,” Brewer said. “On the way home, my wife Selena said she hadn’t seen me that happy in a while. She suggested that college coaching might be something I should explore.” Chalk one up for the wife.

GOING BACK TO BLOOMINGTON

Brewer planted a seed with Mayer, who also was his childhood golf instructor, and when an opening arose soon thereafter, Brewer returned to IU. “I can honestly say Josh was the hardest worker I have ever seen,” Mayer said. “Josh brings a level of intensity to this program that has been vital to our success. He accepts nothing less than perfection.” Brewer helped the Hoosiers enjoy very solid success over the next six seasons. Indiana was represented in NCAA competition each of his those campaigns. After reaching in NCAA Regionals in 2004, 2005 and 2006, the Hoosiers returned to the NCAA Championships as a team in 2008, their first appearance since Brewer’s sophomore year in 1996. All told, Brewer helped coach two All-Americans, three Big Ten Players of the Year honorees, two Palmer Cup members, one Walker Cup member and four scholastic All-Americans.

ON TO SOUTHERN CAL

In 2008, Brewer ventured from his roots to become assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s golf teams at Southern Cal, where he helped both programs thrive during four seasons in Los Angeles. Brewer help produce two PAC-10 Championships teams and golfers who won National Player of the Year, National Freshman of the Year, 12 All-America certificates, three PAC-10 Player of the Year awards and two PAC-10 Freshman of the Year accolades. In addition, USC had two Curtis Cup and two Palmer Cup team members.

THE NEXT CHALLENGE

On June 18, 2012, Brewer was named the head coach at the University of Georgia. “I have been blessed to learn under some of the country’s greatest coaches, and I look forward to using these lessons,” Brewer said. “Georgia is a program that has a rich and storied history beginning with one of women’s athletics greatest visionaries and leaders, Liz Murphey. I want to help build on the tradition she started at UGA of winning championships while graduating our student-athletes.” Brewer’s first eight seasons in Athens have demonstrated that he is well on his way to doing just that.

LIZ MURPHEY (1978-85)

Liz Murphey, a leader in the evolution of women’s intercollegiate athletics, had been at UGA for a decade when the school named women’s golf an intercollegiate sport. She led Georgia top-10 finishes at each national championship from 1979-83 and coached Terri Moody and Cindy Schreyer to individual national titles. Murphey also served as SWA for 18 years and guided UGA women’s athletics to six SEC All-Sports titles from 1984-94.

BEANS KELLY (1985-00)

Never labeled as predictable, Beans Kelly resigned in 2000 while seemingly on top of the college golf world. Under her tutelage, the Lady Bulldogs won 43 team and 33 individual titles, including Vicki Goetze’s 1992 NCAA title; captured seven SEC crowns; and posted eight NCAA top-10 finishes. She was named National Coach of the Year in 1998 and in 2000 became the youngest coach inducted into the NGCA Hall of Fame.

TODD McCORKLE (2000-07) Todd McCorkle arrived in Athens just months after leading Arizona to the national championship. The next spring, McCorkle coached Georgia to the program’s first-ever NCAA team title and became just the second coach in Division I history to win back-to-back NCAA championships at two schools. McCorkle also led the Bulldogs to two SEC titles and seven of his Bulldog golfers combined to earn 11 AllAmerica certificates. KELLEY HESTER (2007-12)

Kelley Hester returned to her alma mater in June 2007 and furthered the storied tradition of Georgia Golf. She led the Bulldogs to a pair of top-20 finishes in her five campaigns in Athens. Individually, Marta Silva Zamora blossomed under Hester’s tutelage to become the consensus National Player of the Year in 2011 and five different Bulldogs combined to secure eight AllAmerica certificates during Hester’s tenure. 2020--21 georgia golf • 21 2020

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 1981

Terri Moody moved atop the leaderboard midway through the second round of the 1981 AIAW Nationals at the UGA Golf Course and held off a late charge from Miami’s Patti Rizzo to win Georgia’s first-ever individual national title by a female studentathlete in any sport. Moody was among a group of five golfers tied for second following an opening-round 73, but grabbed a one-stroke lead over Rizzo with a 72 on her second loop. Moody, an Athens native who was the first female studentathlete to receive a full athletic scholarship from UGA, maintained that advantage when she TERRI MOODY and Rizzo both carded third1981 AIAW Medalist round 75s. On the final day, Rizzo’s 75 knotted the score and forced a three-hole playoff. Moody completed the trio of holes at 1-under while Rizzo was 1-over.

1984

Cindy Schreyer claimed a dramatic win at the 1984 NCAA Championships, winning a threehole playoff with SMU’s Martha Foyer and Miami’s Missie Berteoitti with a birdie at No. 12. Schreyer had battled Arizona State’s Heather Farr through most of the tournament. Farr carded an opening-round score of 71 at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Tarpon Springs, Fla. Schreyer, who was among seven golfers tied for eighth after the first day, rebounded to break the course record and knot herself with Farr on the leaderboard with a second-round 70. CINDY SCHREYER Farr regained a one-shot lead 1984 NCAA Medalist following the third round. While Schreyer shot 76 in the final round, Foyer and Berteotti carded 75s to force the playoff. Farr slipped to fourth with a 79, two strokes off the playoff-forcing score of 297.

1992

Vicki Goetze turned in one of the most impressive single rounds in the history of women’s collegiate golf en route to capturing top individual honors at the 1992 NCAA Championships on Arizona State University’s Karsten Golf Course. Goetze and Stanford’s Audrey Wooding led following firstround, 3-under 69s; however, Annika Sorenstam of Arizona grabbed a three-shot advantage with a second-round 68. Sorenstam maintained that same margin after both she and Goetze shot 72s on the third day. Goetze then torched the course with a 7-under 65 on the fourth day to top Sorenstam by three. VICKI GOETZE Goetze’s effort still remains as 1992 NCAA Medalist both the low single-round score in NCAA Championships history (though four other golfers have equaled the mark) and the Bulldogs’ low loop all time as well.

2001

The 2001 Bulldogs utilized three days of consistent golf to place themselves in contention and then used a spectacular final-round effort to win UGA’s first-ever national title in women’s golf. Georgia shot 298 and was among three teams tied for fourth after the opening day but climbed to sole possession of third after a second-round 295. The Bulldogs improved to 293 in the third round but still trailed top-ranked Duke by four entering the final 18 holes. Georgia seized contol early in the fourth round, tying the Blue Devils by No. 5 and then surging to a three-shot lead at No. 6. Duke never got closer than two shots thereafter. Georgia clinched the title with steely resolve. After a trio of bogeys at No. 16, UGA played the par-5 No. 17 at 3-under to all but seal the national title. The Bulldogs’ fourth-round score of 290 was six shots better than any other team in the field, as Reilley Rankin and Summer Sirmons carded a pair of 72s, while Laura Henderson and Angela Jerman both shot 73. All four of those Bulldogs finished among the top 18 individuals, with Rankin tying for 10th at 292, Henderson and Jerman both tying for 13th at 294 and Sirmons tied for 18th at 296.
