Georgia Golf History
In the spring of 1924, a handful of Georgia students formed what was the university’s first-ever golf team. In those days, the team did not have coaches; rather, one of the players served as captain and made the decisions that guided the squad. Some of the first captains for the Bulldogs were Harris Jones, John Grant, Billy Oliver and Hugh Nunnally.
The Bulldogs’ first coach came on board in 1930 as Murray Soule took the position. He was succeeded by J.M. McFadden (1933-35), who passed the torch to R.L. Keener (1935-42). Keener led the Bulldogs to their first-ever SEC championship in 1941. Because of World War II, the Bulldogs disbanded for the next few years.
Howell Hollis was named coach in 1946 and began to lay the foundation for the program. Serving from 1946 through 1970, Hollis took 13 of his 25 teams to the NCAA Championships, including eight top-10 finishes. Hollis’ Bulldogs claimed 13 Southeastern Conference titles and he had 10 individual conference champions. One of those, George Hamer in 1946, also went on to win the national championship. During Hollis’ tenure, the Bulldogs also played primarily dual matches, posting a mark of 268-57-8.
Hamer, who was nicknamed “The Georgia Pine” because of his height, is still the only Bulldog to win the NCAA title (then known as the National Intercollegiates). He also won the Southeastern Amateur three times and the Georgia State Open and the Southern Amateur titles once apiece.
Hollis was able to attract some of the game’s best players to Athens during his tenure, including David Boyd, Jimmy Gabrielsen, Vinny Giles and Danny Yates.
Hollis stepped down following the 1970 season and he was succeeded by Dick Copas, a member of the UGA staff as an academic counselor and dorm director. Copas maintained the level of success that Hollis had begun as he guided the Bulldogs from 1971-96 to 17 NCAAs, including 10 top-10s, and seven SEC titles. Sixty-one of his proteges won All-SEC honors, while 31 were tabbed as All-Americans. Copas himself was named National Coach of the Year in 1978 and the SEC Coach of the Year seven times.
Copas coached some of the most decorated players in Georgia history, including Peter Persons, Chip Beck, Griff Moody, Matt Peterson, Paul Claxton and Franklin Langham.
Chris Haack stepped from the ranks of the American Junior Golf Association to assume the reins of the Georgia program after Copas. In just his third year on the job, Haack guided the 1999 Bulldogs to the program’s first national championship and he was named the National Coach of the Year. He then guided the 2005 Bulldogs to the national championship and again was chosen as the National Coach of the Year.
To date, Haack also has guided the Bulldogs to five more SEC titles - giving Georgia a league-high 29 crowns. Under Haack, Georgia has set school marks for lowest team total in a tournament and a round as well as lowest mark by an individual. 70 of his players have been tabbed as All-Americans, while 73 have been chosen AllSEC, including 1998 Player of the Year Jeremy Parrott, 2001 Player of the Year Nick Cassini, 2006 Player of the Year Chris Kirk, 2010 Player of the year Russell Henley, 2016 Player of the year Lee McCoy, 2021 Davis Thompson, 2003 Freshman of the Year Kevin Kisner, 2004 Freshman of the Year Brendon Todd, 2006 Freshman of the Year Brian Harman, 2007 Freshman of the Year Hudson Swafford, 2008 Freshman of the Year Harris English, 2010 Freshman of the Year Bryden Macpherson and 2019 Freshman of the Year Trent Phillips.

President Jere W. Morehead began his tenure as the 22nd University of Georgia President on July 1, 2013. Under his leadership, the University has risen in the rankings of the best public colleges and universities and completed a series of initiatives to enhance student learning and success, including a requirement for experiential learning for all undergraduates.
Additionally, the University completed the most successful capital campaign in its history, raising more than $1.4 billion, and launched an Innovation District initiative to create UGA’s campus of the future, where students and faculty partner with industry to generate ideas and solutions to continue the University’s role as a powerful driver of economic development in Georgia. Since 2013, UGA has increased its research expenditures by 41% and has been ranked among the top five universities in the U.S. each year for research-based products reaching the marketplace. UGA now stands first nationally in this important ranking.
In keeping with his focus on student success, President Morehead launched the ALL Georgia Program to support students from rural areas and created the Double Dawgs program, which enables students to save time and money by earning an undergraduate and graduate degree in five years or less. UGA graduates are in demand: 91% of graduates in 2020 were employed or in graduate school within six months of graduation.
President Morehead has served the University of Georgia since 1986 in both faculty and administrative roles. Before becoming President, he was Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost from 2010 to 2013. Prior to 2010, he held several key administrative posts, including Vice President for Instruction, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Associate Provost and Director of the Honors Program, and acting Executive Director of Legal Affairs.
Josh Brooks was named J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Jan. 6, 2021, after serving 11 years at UGA, most recently as Interim Director of Athletics and Senior Deputy Director of Athletics.
Brooks returned to UGA in 2016 as Executive Associate Director of Athletics after serving as Deputy Athletics Director at the University of Louisiana Monroe from 2015-16 and Director of Athletics at Millsaps College from 2014-15.
Prior to his tenures at Millsaps and ULM, he served in capacities at UGA as Director of Football Operations (200811) and Assistant and Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations (2012-14).
On January 20, 2021, Brooks pledged $100,000 to create a need-based scholarship that will support UGA students from Athens-Clarke County. His gift will create a Georgia Commitment Scholarship (GCS), adding to the more than 550 endowed, need-based scholarships created under the GCS program since its launch in January 2017.
During his time at UGA, Brooks worked closely with former Director of Athletics Greg McGarity overseeing internal and external for all athletic operations. He has served as the liaison with the Office of University Architects office on all athletic construction projects and with several campus departments as well as the president’s office. His responsibilities at UGA have included overseeing the departments of facility support, graphics and design, and turf management.
He has been involved in the scheduling of future football games, as well as overseeing bowl game operations. In addition, his responsibilities included assisting with the development and management of facilities, new construction projects for the Athletic Association, and planning the 2013 Jason Aldean Concert in Sanford Stadium. Brooks has also served as the sport facilitator for football and men’s and women’s track and field and cross country.
He is the Meigs Professor of Legal Studies in the Terry College of Business, where he has held a faculty appointment since 1986. He is a co-author of several books and book chapters, including The Legal and Regulatory Environment of Business, and he has published scholarly articles on legal topics ranging from export control to jury selection. He has served as Editorin-Chief of the American Business Law Journal.
His external service currently includes serving as President of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and Chair of the SEC Executive Committee. He also serves as Chair of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Board of Directors, a member of the NCAA Division I Administrative Committee, and a member of the NCAA Board of Governors. He is Co-Chair of the University Leadership Forum, a national initiative led by the Council on Competitiveness to expand the role of American higher education in the global innovation economy. Additional service includes membership on the boards of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, Georgia Research Alliance, University System of Georgia Foundation, Atlanta Regional Council for Higher Education, and Emory University Candler School of Theology.
President Morehead has received several University-wide teaching awards, including the Josiah Meigs Award – UGA’s highest honor for teaching excellence – the Richard B. Russell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the Teacher of the Year Award in the Terry College of Business, and the Lothar Tresp Outstanding Honors Professor Award. In 2021, he received the Chief Executive Leadership Award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education District III for outstanding leadership and service in support of education.
He holds a bachelor’s degree from Georgia State University and a law degree from the University of Georgia.
During his time at Millsaps, Brooks revamped the Major game-day experience. He created the kid’s zone, specialized concessions, and partnerships with youth sports leagues. Partnerships with the Jackson Public Schools, the Jackson Zoo, the National Guard and the Boy and Girl Scouts of America added to game days. This enhanced experience helped Brooks solicit over $100K in sponsorship opportunities.
Brooks also established a department-wide fundraising campaign that led to a 150 percent increase in Major-Club donations. Capping off this fundraising campaign was the creation of a standalone Hall of Fame event at the Capital Club and the Mary Ann Edge Golf Tournament held at Patrick Farms golf course.
The Majors saw great athletic success in Brooks’ first year. The Majors enjoyed two SAA regular season championships, captured by the men’s soccer team and the women’s basketball team. The Millsaps’ baseball team also earned a trip to the West Regional tournament. The student-athletes also shined in the classroom in Brooks’ first year. Millsaps’ studentathletes had an overall grade-point-average of 3.0 in the 2014-15 academic year. Over 130 Majors’ earned Academic All-Conference honors.
While serving as director of football operations at the University of Louisiana-Monroe beginning in 2004, and in 2007 ULM became bowl eligible for the first time in school history after beating Alabama. Brooks gained experience as a student at Louisiana State University, working as an equipment manager and a student assistant coach. During his four years at LSU, the Tigers participated in the 2000 Peach Bowl, 2002 Sugar Bowl, and won the 2001 Southeastern Conference championship.
A native of Hammond, Louisiana, he graduated from LSU (’02) with a degree in Kinesiology and completed his Master’s degree in Sport Management from The University of Georgia (‘14). He and his wife Lillie have twin sons Jackson and James born July 2009 and a third son Davis born March 2012.

Chris Haack was named the Georgia men’s golf coach on July 18,1996 – and he has guided the Bulldogs to their highest levels of success.
Haack has coached the Bulldogs to two national championships (the only two in school history), eight Southeastern Conference crowns, 67 team tournament titles, and virtually every squad and individual records.
Under his tutelage, 27 Bulldogs have accumulated 63 medalist titles. Thirty-one of his players have rolled up 70 All-America honors, while 33 have earned 73 All-SEC certificates. He also has coached 19 Scholar All-Americans. Eleven of Haack’s pupils have amassed 44 PGA Tour wins and, all told, his former players have earned more than $200 million at the pro level.
Haack was inducted into the GCAA Hall of Fame in 2012, the GSGA’s Georgia Golf Hall of Fame in 2016, and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
Haack’s Bulldogs have had nine top-10 and 17 top-20 efforts at the NCAAs, including the 1999 and 2005 national championships, runner-up efforts in 2007 and 2011, and thirdplace showings in 2009 and 2015.
In 2022, Haack led the Bulldogs to the Linger Longer Invitational title, giving him at least one win in 22 of his 26 seasons. He guided his team back to the NCAA Championships with a fourth-place showing in the Bryan Regional. Haack coached Trent Phillips to his fourth straight All-America certificate (the fifth Bulldog to accomplish that feat) and his fourth consecutive First-Team All-SEC recognition (the first Bulldog reaching that status) and Maxwell Ford to the SEC’s All-Freshman Team. Phillips picked up medalist honors in the Williams Cup and was on the watch list for several prestigious postseason awards.
In 2021, Haack piloted the Bulldogs to team titles in the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate and the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship. He coached Phillips and Davis Thompson to medalist honors in the Gator Invitational and Tiger Invitational, respectively. Thompson was named First-Team All-America and was picked as the SEC Golfer of the Year. Phillips became a third-time All-American and joined Thompson as First-Team All-SEC. Thompson,
Phillips, and Connor Creasy earned AllAmerica Scholar recognition. Sepp Straka, an All-American for Haack in 2016, represented Austria in Olympics in Tokyo with his brother and former UGA teammate Sam on the bag.
Haack led the Bulldogs to wins in the Jim Rivers Invitational and the Crooked Stick Invitational in the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign. Thompson and Phillips earned First-Team All-America honors and they were joined by Calum Masters as All-America Scholars.
His Bulldogs won thrice in 2019, taking the Puerto Rico Classic, the Linger Longer Invitational, and the NCAA Athens Regional. Phillips, Spencer Ralston, and Thompson were chosen as All-Americans and Phillips became Haack’s eighth SEC Freshman of the Year.
In 2018, Ralston earned All-America recognition for the Bulldogs, who finished second in three events. Greyson Sigg was an All-American while Ralston was chosen for the Freshman All-SEC squad in 2017.
In 2016, Haack led the Bulldogs to four team titles, including the 29th SEC Championship in school history and the Tuscaloosa Regional. Haack was chosen as the SEC Coach of the Year for the fifth time in his career. Lee McCoy was picked as an All-American and as the SEC Golfer of the Year after claiming conference medalist honors. Bubba Watson, an AllAmerican for Haack in 2000, represented the United States in the 2016 Olympics.
In 2015, Haack led the Bulldogs to three victories, then piloted the squad to the “Final Fore” in the NCAA Championships. McCoy was an All-American after claiming medalist honors a school-record-tying four times and Zach Healy was an All-American.
Haack’s 2014 Bulldogs won four times, including the San Antonio Regional. Haack’s charges picked up two titles in 2013, winning the Brickyard Collegiate Championship and the Bulldog Battle at Mountain Lake.
In 2012, Haack guided a quintet of one junior, three sophomores and one freshman to the NCAAs.
Watson became the first Bulldog to win a professional major as he captured the 2012
8 MEN'S GOLF MEDIA GUIDE GO DAWGS SIC ‘EM
Masters title. In 2014, Watson won the Masters again, made the U.S. Ryder Cup Team, and was one of an unprecedented six Bulldogs (joining Brian Harman, Harris English, Russell Henley, Chris Kirk and Brendon Todd) to win a PGA Tour event.
In 2012, Haack added the position of Director of Golf. He serves as the liaison between the Athletic Association and the UGA Golf Course, oversees the Boyd Center and the adjacent practice facilities, and is available as counsel to women’s coach Josh Brewer.
Haack piloted the 2011 Bulldogs to the final match of the NCAAs. In 2009-10, Haack coached Henley to National and SEC Player of the Year honors. He guided the Bulldogs to three wins, including the SEC Championship. In the Williams Intercollegiate, Haack’s squad made up a 15-shot deficit after two rounds to win by one shot – the largest rally in his tenure.
The 2009 Bulldogs won five tournaments, including the SEC title. His Bulldogs finished No. 1 in the final Golfstat poll and came in third at the NCAAs. The 2008 Bulldogs finished the year with the No. 1 ranking. Haack’s team won three times and came in eighth at the NCAAs. In 2007, Georgia won five out of seven tournaments. Despite placing second at the NCAAs, Georgia held the final No. 1 ranking. In 2006, Haack led the Bulldogs to a school-record-tying six tournament wins and he was chosen as the SEC Coach of the Year.
He was selected by the GCAA as the 2006 head coach for the U.S. Palmer Cup Team.
The Bulldogs won three tournaments in 2005 – including the most memorable one in the spring as Georgia capped the season with a wire-to-wire win at the NCAAs. Haack was chosen as the National Coach of the Year. Haack’s 2004 Bulldogs won the SEC title. In 2003, his Bulldogs cracked the win column at the Tennessee Tournament of Champions. Though his 2002 Bulldogs did not win a tournament, Haack was recognized as one of the nation’s top coaches as he was chosen as coach for Team USA for the Palmer Cup.
Haack’s 2001 Bulldogs won six events, including a school-record four straight, and finished the season ranked No. 1 in the nation. Haack’s 2000 Bulldogs won three tournaments and he earned SEC Coach of the Year honors.
Haack’s breakthrough season with the Bulldogs came in 1999. No Georgia team had ever ascended to the No. 1 position in the polls, but Haack’s team did so early in the spring campaign. The Bulldogs later validated their ranking by winning the program’s first national championship. Haack was named National Coach of the Year.
In 1998, Haack led Georgia to four wins, including its first SEC crown since 1988. Haack’s first Georgia squad in 1997 showed glimpses of what lay ahead as the youthful Bulldogs finished fourth or better in seven
of 11 events and advanced to the NCAA Regional.
Before being named Georgia’s coach, Haack was a driving force for the American Junior Golf Association. He joined the AJGA in 1981 as a tournament director before becoming director of operations in 1984 and director of development in 1985. He served a seven-year stint as captain of the Canon Cup West Team, squads that included Tiger Woods. In an initiative begun as foundation director from 1988-90, he organized and established fundraising programs to build surplus moneys for the AJGA’s perpetuity, bringing in more than $750,000 for the foundation and other junior programs. Haack served as assistant executive director from 1990-96, helping manage a staff of 22 and an annual budget of $2.5 million. He helped oversee the running of 50-plus events nationwide.
The recipient of the AJGA Sportsmanship Award, Haack graduated from Newnan High School in 1978. He attended West Georgia College, where he played on the golf team, and he received his degree from Mellen.
Haack is married to the former Ronda Livesay and they have six children (Kasi, Charlie, Kassidy, Katie, Kaylee, and Katie Beth) and one grandson (Banks).

Jim Douglas, who helped the Georgia men’s golf team win the program’s two national championships, rejoined the Bulldogs’ staff in January of 2011 and was promoted to Associate Head Coach in July of 2012. He is in his 22nd season overall with the Bulldogs.
Douglas was Georgia’s assistant coach from 1997 through 2005, during which time the Bulldogs celebrated some of their greatest success. With Douglas as Coach Chris Haack’s lieutenant, Georgia won NCAA titles in 1999 and 2005, along with four Southeastern Conference championships (1998, 2000, 2001 and 2004). Georgia produced 26 AllAmericans, 30 All-SEC picks, two SEC Players of the Year, two SEC Freshmen of the Year, 33 SEC Academic Honor Roll selections, six Scholar All-Americans, and an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient in that span.
Douglas served parts of the 2009-10 season as a volunteer coach, including during Georgia’s run to the SEC title.
In 2011, with Douglas assisting Haack in the spring, the Bulldogs advanced to the final match of the NCAA Championship. Douglas and Haack also guided the Bulldogs to the 2015 “Final Fore.” In 2015, Douglas also helped the Bulldogs win the 29th SEC title in school history.
Douglas graduated from UGA with a degrees in Political Science and History. He has two sons, James and Charles.

Following the 1999 NCAA Championship in Chaska, Minn.:
• The announcer called out the wrong school as the winner of the national title.
• A torrential rainstorm hit the suburb of Minneapolis.
• And a courtesy van provided to the actual champion was vandalized, presumably by a not-so-gracious loser.
But the players and coaches from the Georgia men’s golf team couldn’t have cared less. All of that was a small price to pay for the program’s first national championship.
“It’s an indescribable feeling,” said Coach Chris Haack, whose Georgia (not Washington, as the announcer said) squad secured the trophy. “All the hard work, all the sacrifice, all the time spent hitting balls, it’s worth it. I always wondered what it felt like when teams like UNLV and Oklahoma State won the national title. Now I know — and it’s a great feeling. I am so proud of our guys. A four-day tournament is a real grind, but they stayed focused and played good, steady golf all week. They really played like champions.”
Especially on the last day. The Bulldogs entered the final round trailing Oklahoma State by five shots at Hazeltine National Golf Club. The players and coaches to a man said making up five shots was not a difficult proposition — and they were right. Georgia actually pulled ahead after just two holes and extended its lead throughout the rest of the front nine before holding on down the stretch to win by three.
“We knew that we had to be patient on this course because so much can change so quickly,” Michael Morrison said. “You can’t take anything for granted. You have to play every shot as hard as the last one. You’ve got to play every hole to the best of your ability. I think we all did that.”
Particularly Ryuji Imada. He paced the comeback effort with a 5-under par 67, one off the course record for Hazeltine. Imada finished at 1-under 287, second behind Northwestern’s Luke Donald (284).
“It was one of the best 18 holes of golf I’ve ever seen,” said Haack, who sported a newly shaved bald head after the NCAAs as he made good on a pre-tournament promise. “Ryuji was spectacular. He certainly picked the right time to turn it on. That could go down in history as one of the best final rounds at the NCAAs. The little man just put us on his back and took us to the title.”
Imada had a shot at winning the medalist title down the stretch, but he said he focused more on the team crown.
“The last thing I wanted to do was mess up and cost us the national championship,” Imada said. “I had a couple of chances to go at the flag, but I didn’t because it meant more for us as a team to win the national championship. I wanted to be aggressive, but I didn’t want to let the team down.”
Imada finished the year as the nation’s third-ranked golfer, trailing only Donald and Georgia Tech’s Bryce Molder.
“It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had. It’s unbelievable,” Nick Cassini said. “No matter what any of us do the rest of our lives in golf, we’ll be the 1999 national champions. It’s like a dream come true.”
With Coach Chris Haack rubbing the lucky coin in his pocket, Georgia cashed in at the 2005 NCAA Championship.
The Bulldogs went wire-to-wire as the tournament leader at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md., finishing with an 11-shot advantage over instate rival Georgia Tech. Georgia fired an even-par 280 in the final round to wind up at 15-over 1,135.
“I could not be prouder of this group of guys,” said Haack, who carried a coin given to him by his daughter, Katie, that had the inscription, “Dad, I Love You.”
“I knew that we had the talent, the confidence and the demeanor to challenge for the championship this year,” Haack continued. “It’s been a good year, but we only had two wins coming in. I knew if they all put it together, it would be special. They just happened to do it this week when it meant the most.”
“It’s awesome to go out like this,” said David Denham, the only senior in the Bulldogs’ lineup. “You live for moments like this. Every team strives to win the national championship, but not too many of them do it.”
“This is what you play for,” Richard Scott said. “This is what this team was put together for. It’s great to go out and win other tournaments, but this is the one we all play for.”
“This is the biggest one,” team captain Kevin Kisner said. “This is what you set your goals for. This is why we all came to Georgia. We’ve got too solid of a team not to win tournaments. When we all play well, it’s hard for us to lose.”
The Bulldogs entered the final round with a 9-shot lead over the Yellow Jackets, and they knew it would hard to give that kind of lead away. Still, when Brendon Todd’s putt rolled in on No. 18, the players and coaches were all at once relieved and ecstatic.
“This is the ultimate feeling,” Chris Kirk said. “It’s awesome. It’s a great group of guys, and I have loved playing with them the last two years.”
“It feels great,” Todd said. “It’s probably the biggest accomplishment any of us have in golf. It’s just incredible to win the national championship.”
Todd wound up as the Bulldogs’ top individual at 3-over 283, followed by Kirk and Kisner at 5-over 285, Scott at 6-over 286 and Denham at 8-over 288. Todd finished seventh, and Kirk and Kisner were in the group that tied for 13th. Scott had a top-20 finish as he wound up 16th.
