2015-2016 Outlook Chris Haack is entering his 20th season as the head coach of the Georgia men’s golf team. On the eve of that campaign, he answered several questions about his program. First of all, can you believe you are starting your 20th season at Georgia? “Time flies when you’re having fun. I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by amazing players, not to mention my assistant coaches, our support staff and our fans. It doesn’t feel like it’s been 20 years. We’ve had a nice run with the NCAA and SEC championships, the other titles and the success we’re having on the PGA Tour, but it’s been incredible even without all of that factored in. I get to work with amazing young people and I’ve developed relationships that I will cherish the rest of my life. I’ve tried to be a good steward of the legacy that is Georgia Golf and I just hope I’ve lived up to that.” So much of the offseason talk was about whether Lee McCoy would return or not for his senior year. Now that it’s official, what does his presence mean to Georgia? “He’s a guy with a lot of experience and a great stroke average and someone we can count on week in and week out. His leadership qualities and his golf abilities are a huge plus for us. Not only did he come back, but he came back enthusiastically. He’s excited about being back and feels good about it. Sepp (Straka) was the same way last year when he came off the redshirt season. As our two seniors, Lee and Sepp can help show our younger guys how to set goals and how to win championships. I am fired up about those two leading us.” Heading into the season, what are your initial thoughts about your team? “We have great young men with a tremendous amount of ability and potential. We can be a championship contender again. We are going into this season with high expectations — just like every year. ” The Bulldogs’ run to the “Final Fore” last year was a memorable one. Did it surprise you? And can you maintain that momentum with four-fifths of that lineup coming back? “I think it makes everyone on the team realize what’s possible. We came so close to doing it last year. A lot of times, the biggest hurdle to overcome is understanding that you have to believe in yourself. Now they know what they’re capable of. I knew they could do it, but it was a matter of which ream showed up. We played so well at times last year; other times, we didn’t play as well. That’s golf for you. If the team that plays well shows up, we’re capable of winning it.” Your only freshman is David Mackey, whose grandfather and mother both played for Georgia. How important is that legacy and what will David’s role be this season? “We expect him to step in and compete and do what he needs to do to play for us. He demonstrated through his four years at North Oconee High School that he knows how to win. He comes from good pedigree, from a golf knowledgeable family.

We’re excited to have him in the fold.” Between your two seniors and your one freshman, you have juniors in Greyson Sigg and Jaime Lopez Rivarola, a sophomore in Zach Healy, and redshirt freshmen in Matthew Beringer and Jack Larkin Jr. Sigg and Healy were there at the end last year and Lopez Rivarola has played a considerable amount. What will their roles be? “I expect all of our golfers to work hard every day in the classroom and on the course and I expect them to compete hard every day. When we have our qualifiers, everyone has to earn what he gets. These guys are here because they have talent and ability. They need to do everything they can to get themselves into position to get into the lineup and to help us win.” What are your thoughts on your schedule? “We’re going to see strong fields every week. Every time we get out there, we’re going to have teams from the top 20 around us. The SEC is going to have about half of its teams in the rankings and we’re going to be facing them every week, not to mention the other national powers that will show up on our schedule. When we get to the championships in April and May, we will have been battled tested.” You mentioned the Bulldogs’ success on the PGA Tour earlier. How proud are you of those guys? “These guys come in and they end up being like your own child. Anything they achieve in life — PGA Tour or otherwise — is a point of pride. When you look at what our guys on the Tour are doing, it’s pretty incredible.You can’t turn on the TV on Sunday without seeing one or two or three Bulldogs in contention. And it’s different guys each week. It’s rewarding as their college coach. We’re proud of the pipeline we’ve created and we hope it continues to attract talented players to come here.”

Chris Haack

Head Coach/Director Of Golf 20th Season Chris Haack was named the Georgia men’s golf coach on July 18,1996 – and he has taken to Bulldogs to a new level of success. Haack has guided the Bulldogs to two national championships (the only two in school history), seven Southeastern Conference crowns, 56 team tournament titles, and several squad and individual records. Under Haack, the Bulldogs have had nine top-10 and 15 top-20 efforts at the NCAAs, including the 1999 and 2005 national titles and runner-up efforts in 2007 and 2011. Haack has had 56 All-Americans during his tenure, including at least one in 17 of the past 18 years. Georgia’s win in the 2013 Dick’s Sporting Goods Collegiate Challenge Cup was the 50th in Haack’s career. He enters the 2015-16 season with 56 team titles, Georgia’s school record. In 2012, Bubba Watson, an All-American for Haack in 2000, became the first Bulldog to win a professional major as he captured the Masters title. And in 2014, Watson won the Masters again, made the U.S. Ryder Cup Team and was one of an unprecedented six Bulldogs (joining Brian Harman, Harris English, Russell Henley, Chris Kirk and Brendon Todd) to win a PGA Tour event. In both 2014 and 2015, eight Bulldogs qualified for the FedExCup Playoffs. In 2012, Haack added the position of Director of Golf. He serves as the liaison between the Athletic Association and the UGA Golf Course, oversees the Boyd Center and the adjacent practice facilities, and is available as counsel to women’s coach Josh Brewer. Haack was inducted into the GCAA Hall of Fame in December of 2012, joining Georgia predecessors Howell Hollis and Dick Copas. Haack was chosen for induction into the GSGA’s Georgia Golf

Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2014-15, Haack led the Bulldogs to three victories, then piloted the squad to the “Final Fore” in the NCAA Championships. Lee McCoy was a First-Team All-America and All-SEC pick after claiming medalist honors a school-record-tying four times and Zach Healy was an Honorable Mention All-American. Haack’s 2013-14 Bulldogs won four times, including the NCAA Regional in San Antonio. Haack produced three All-Americans in Joey Garber (who spent much of the season as the country’s No. 1 player), Michael Cromie and McCoy. Haack’s charges picked up two titles in 2012-13, winning the Brickyard Collegiate Championship and the Bulldog Battle at Mountain Lake. In 2011-12, Haack took a quintet of one junior, three sophomores and one freshman to the NCAAs and Keith Mitchell earned All-America honors. Haack piloted the 2010-11 Bulldogs to

the final match of the NCAAs. English, Henley and Swafford capped their careers with All-America recognition. In 2009-10, Haack coached Henley to National and SEC Player of the Year honors. He also guided the Bulldogs to three wins, including the SEC Championship. In the Williams Intercollegiate, Haack’s squad made up a 15-shot deficit after two rounds to win by one stroke – the largest rally in his tenure. The 2008-09 Bulldogs won five tournaments, including the SEC title. His Bulldogs finished No. 1 in the final Golfstat poll and came in third at the NCAAs. The 2007-08 Bulldogs finished the year with the No. 1 ranking. Haack’s team won three times and came in eighth at the NCAAs. In 2006-07, Georgia won five out of seven tournaments. Despite placing second at the NCAAs, Georgia held the final No. 1 ranking. In 2005-06, Haack led the Bulldogs to a school-record-tying six tournament wins and he was chosen as the SEC Coach of the Year. He also was selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America as the 2006 head coach for the United States Palmer Cup Team. The Bulldogs won three tournaments in 2004-05 – including the most memorable one in the spring as Georgia capped the season with a wire-to-wire win at the NCAAs. Haack was chosen as the National Coach of the Year. Haack’s 2003-04 Bulldogs won the SEC title. In 2002-03, his Bulldogs finished 16th at

Though his 2001-02 Bulldogs did not win a tournament, Haack was recognized as one of the nation’s top coaches as he was chosen as coach for Team USA for the Palmer Cup. Haack’s 2000-01 Bulldogs won six events, including a school-record four straight, and finished the season ranked No. 1 in the nation. Haack’s 1999-2000 Bulldogs won three tournaments and he earned SEC Coach of the Year honors. Haack’s breakthrough season with the Bulldogs came in 1998-99. No Georgia team had ever ascended to the No. 1 position in the polls, but Haack’s team did so early in the spring campaign. The Bulldogs later validated their ranking

by winning the program’s first national championship. Haack was named National Coach of the Year. In 1997-98, Haack led Georgia to four wins, including its first SEC crown since 1988. Haack’s first Georgia squad in 1996-97 showed glimpses of what lay ahead as the youthful Bulldogs finished fourth or better in seven of 11 events and advanced to the NCAA Regional. Before being named Georgia’s coach, Haack was a driving force for the American Junior Golf Association. He joined the AJGA in 1981 as a tournament director before becoming director of operations in 1984 and director of development in 1985. He also served a seven-year stint as captain of the Canon Cup West Team, squads that included Tiger Woods and Chris Riley. In an initiative

Associate Head Coach 15th Season Jim Douglas, who helped the Georgia men’s golf team win the program’s two national championships, rejoined the Bulldogs’ staff in January of 2011 and was promoted to Associate Head Coach in July of 2012. Douglas was Georgia’s assistant coach from 1997 through 2005, during which

time the Bulldogs celebrated some of their greatest success. With Douglas as Coach Chris Haack’s lieutenant, Georgia won NCAA titles in 1999 and 2005, along with four Southeastern Conference championships (1998, 2000, 2001 and 2004). Georgia produced 26 All-Americans, 30 All-SEC picks, two SEC Players of

The recipient of the AJGA Sportsmanship Award, Haack graduated from Newnan High School in 1978. He attended West Georgia College, where he played on the golf team, and he received his degree from Mellen. Haack has two children attending UGA, his son Charlie and his daughter Katie.

Douglas served parts of the 2009-10 season as a volunteer coach, including during Georgia’s run to the SEC title. In 2011, with Douglas assisting Haack in the spring, the Bulldogs advanced to the final match of the NCAA Championship. Douglas helped seniors Harris English, Russell Henley and Hudson Swafford cap their careers with All-America honors. Douglas and Haack have guided the Bulldogs back to the NCAAs each of the last five years, including 2015 when they made it back to the “Final Fore.” “As Associate Head Coach, Jim has more responsibilities with the day-to-day operations of our team,” Haack said. “He knows everything there is to know about our program and the way things need to be done. He’s been my right-hand man for many years, and we are lucky to have him in Athens. He brings so many qualities to the table. His contributions to our program – including areas like academics, recruiting, tournaments and practices – have been critical to our success.” Douglas graduated from Georgia with a double major in political science and history. He has two sons, James and Charles.

Georgia Golf Facilities The University of Georgia Golf Course opened in 1968 with the purpose of supporting the university community and a collegiate golf program. Over the years, the course has become an important recreation facility not only for the University, but for the state of Georgia as a whole. Avid golfer Dr. Omer C. Aderhold served as UGA’s President from 1950-67 and was a driving force behind the creation of the UGA Golf Course. The University already owned the land and Dr. Aderhold was a personal friend of Robert Trent Jones Sr., the golf course’s architect. In addition, UGA students were so interested in having a golf course that they agreed to pay for it in their student activity fees over a five-year period during the 1960s. By 1990, the course needed heavy renovation and Dave Cousart, the golf course manager, worked to rebuild the greens and irrigation system, as well as integrate a number of Jones’ features that had been left out because of the limited budget back in the 1960s. In May 2006, the greens and the greens complex were completely renovated by Love Golf Design of St. Simons Island. The new green design brought the course up to the championship standards of today’s top professional and collegiate players. The greens are very characteristic of a Jones course and the renovation included 21 new tees, making the course more versatile for both amateurs and professionals. In 2009, the golf course was named one of the top-10 public courses in Georgia by Golfweek as well as one of the best 25 best university courses in the nation by Links Magazine. In 2013, the UGA course was ranked No. 9 among the top university courses by Golfweek. Over its history, the UGA Golf Course has hosted a number of different collegiate tournaments including the annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, the Men’s and Women’s SEC Championships, Men’s and Women’s NCAA Regionals, as well as the women’s collegiate national championships on five occasions. It also played hosted to a Web. com Tour tournament for two years. The UGA Golf Course has helped the Georgia men’s and women’s golf teams produce stellar results. The Georgia men won NCAA titles in 1999 and 2005 and boasts a league-high 28 SEC team titles. In 1946, George Hamer claimed medalist honors at the national meet. Fifteen different Bulldogs have won the individual title at the SECs. The Georgia women captured the 2001 NCAA Championship and also have produced three individual national champions – Terri Moody in 1981 (at the UGA Golf Course), Cindy Schreyer in 1984 and Vicki Goetze in 1992. The Georgia women sport an SEC-best 19 league titles – 11 team and eight individual. Much of Georgia Golf’s success can be attributed to the program’s Boyd Golf Center and adjacent practice area just yards for the UGA Golf Course’s combined green for Nos. 9 and 18. The Boyd Center features posh locker rooms, spacious coaches’ offices; a players’ lounge with a dramatic panoramic view of the UGA

Golf Course’s 18th green; club storage and repair areas; multiple computer work stations and a kitchen. The practice area includes multiple tee boxes overlooking a range with numerous target greens, three putting greens, wedge play areas and three practice bunkers. In addition, tee boxes in the Frank Lumpkin Indoor Practice Facility provide not only a location to practice during inclement weather but also state-ofthe-art video equipment for swing analysis.

Jere W. Morehead

University Of Georgia President Jere W. Morehead became the University of Georgia’s 22nd President on July 1, 2013. Prior to becoming President, he served UGA in many key administrative roles, including Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost,Vice President for Instruction, and Associate Provost and Director of the Honors Program. President Morehead is the Meigs Professor of Legal Studies in the Terry College of Business, where he has held a faculty appointment since 1986. He is a co-author of several books and book chapters, including

The Legal and Regulatory Environment of Business, and he has published scholarly articles on legal topics ranging from

export controls to jury selection. He has served as editor-in-chief of the American Business Law Journal and previously held several other editorial board positions with the ABLJ. President Morehead has received several university-wide teaching awards, including the Josiah Meigs Award — UGA’s highest honor for teaching excellence — the Richard B. Russell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the Teacher of the Year Award in the Terry College of Business, and the Lothar Tresp Outstanding Honors Professor Award. He also received the Distinguished Service Scroll Award, the Law School Alumni Association’s highest honor, and has been included in Georgia Trend’s list of Most Influential Georgians for two consecutive years. President Morehead is the first alumnus of UGA to be named President in more than 45 years. He received his law degree (J.D.) from the University of Georgia in 1980 and served as an Assistant United States Attorney with the Department of Justice from 1980 to 1986.

Greg McGarity J. Reid Parker Director Of Athletics

Athens native and University of Georgia graduate Greg McGarity was named Director of Athletics in 2010 after serving 18 years in the athletic department at Florida. McGarity has injected a program of imagination and innovation into the Georgia Athletic Association with emphasis on exploring new ideas and initiatives designed to move the organization forward in all areas of competition, academics and service. Among the many initiatives are implementation of a nutrition program for all sports, greater emphasis on customer service as well as community service, scoreboard upgrades enhancing the in-game experience for guests and patrons in all sports, and development of leadership programs fostering staff development. He has encouraged the experimentation of new ideas such as moving volleyball competition to Stegeman Coliseum and helping bring a sold-out concert (Jason Aldean, 65,000) to Sanford Stadium for the first time. He was instrumental in development and implementation along with Nike of a new brand identity program which brings consistency in use of colors, logos, lettering and numerals to Georgia teams. McGarity oversees a 21-sport athletics program supported by a budget of $117 million. Since he became Director of Athletics, Georgia teams have won national titles in women’s swimming and diving (2013 and 2014) and equestrian (2014) and SEC championships in men’s tennis (2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015), men’s tennis SEC Tournament (2012 and 2013), women’s tennis (2013), women’s tennis SEC Tournament (2014), women’s swimming and diving (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015), equestrian (2015), and two SEC Eastern Division titles in football (2011 and 2012). Georgia teams have been ranked in the nation’s top 20 and 10 in the top 10. Georgia’s standing in the Learfield Director’s Cup improved from 20th in 2011 to 10th in 2013 and is consistently in the top 20. McGarity has been a standard bearer for academic achievement. Since his arrival, Georgia student-athletes have been the recipients of eight NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, 21 CoSIDA Academic All-America awards, three NCAA Top 10 honors, three SEC Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athletes of the Year, and two SEC Brad Davis Awards. He has been at the forefront of facility expansion and renovation. Recently completed were a $12 million Foley Field facility renovation, and new scoreboards/video boards at baseball, softball and soccer. New sound systems in Stegeman Coliseum and Sanford Stadium have been installed, as well as improvements in restrooms and concessions stands. A new Indoor Athletic Facility is scheduled to be constructed adjacent to Butts-Mehre, providing a facility for all sports to utilize. McGarity was appointed as the athletic directors’ representative to the SEC Executive Committee in 2013. He was named recipient of the 2013 Tom Osborne Award presented by the Collegiate and Professional Sports Dietitians Association for special achievement and contributions to advanced-practice sports nutrition. A 1976 graduate of UGA’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, McGarity was a 2012 inductee into the Grady Fellowship, a program to honor those whose influence, achievements and service to the media professions have enhanced the reputation of the college. He served on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee from 2012-14. McGarity currently is serving on the NCAA National Letter of Intent Football Recruiting Group, the SEC Fan Experience Working Group, and the U.S. Tennis Association Athletic Director’s Advisory Group. McGarity was a letterman on the 1973 Georgia tennis team. After serving as a student assistant from 1973-77, he held positions as assistant sports information director and head women’s tennis coach (1977-81), administrative assistant (1982-88), and assistant athletic director for facilities and event management (1988-92). McGarity is married to the former Sheryl Holland, who graduated from UGA in 1976 with a degree in Education. They have one son, Alex, a graduate of Florida and Georgia.

National Championships the 1999 NCAA Championship in Chaska, Minn.: 1999 Following • The announcer called out the wrong school as the winner of the national title. • A torrential rainstorm hit the suburb of Minneapolis. • And a courtesy van provided to the actual champion was vandalized, presumably by a not-so-gracious loser. But the players and coaches from the Georgia men’s golf team couldn’t have cared less. All of that was a small price to pay for the program’s first national championship. “It’s an indescribable feeling,” said Coach Chris Haack, whose Georgia (not Washington, as the announcer said) squad secured the trophy. “All the hard work, all the sacrifice, all the time spent hitting balls, it’s worth it. I always wondered what it felt like when teams like UNLV and Oklahoma State won the national title. Now I know — and it’s a great feeling. I am so proud of our guys. A four-day tournament is a real grind, but they stayed focused and played good, steady golf all week. They really played like champions.” Especially on the last day. The Bulldogs entered the final round trailing Oklahoma State by five shots at Hazeltine National Golf Club. The players and coaches to a man said making up five shots was not a difficult proposition — and they were right. Georgia actually pulled ahead after just two holes and extended its lead throughout the rest of the front nine before holding on down the stretch to win by three. “We knew that we had to be patient on this course because so much can change so quickly,” Michael Morrison said. “You can’t take anything for granted.You have to play every shot as hard as the last one.You’ve got to play every hole to the best of your ability. I think we all did that.” Particularly Ryuji Imada. He paced the comeback effort with a 5-under par 67, one off the course record for Hazeltine. Imada finished at 1-under 287, second behind Northwestern’s Luke Donald (284). “It was one of the best 18 holes of golf I’ve ever seen,” said Haack, who sported a newly shaved bald head after the NCAAs as he made good on a pre-tournament promise. “Ryuji was spectacular. He certainly picked the

right time to turn it on. That could go down in history as one of the best final rounds at the NCAAs. The little man just put us on his back and took us to the title.” Imada had a shot at winning the medalist title down the stretch, but he said he focused more on the team crown. “The last thing I wanted to do was mess up and cost us the national championship,” Imada said. “I had a couple of chances to go at the flag, but I didn’t because it meant more for us as a team to win the national championship. I wanted to be aggressive, but I didn’t want to let the team down.” Imada finished the year as the nation’s third-ranked golfer, trailing only Donald and Georgia Tech’s Bryce Molder. “It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had. It’s unbelievable,” Nick Cassini said. “No matter what any of us do the rest of our lives in golf, we’ll be the 1999 national champions. It’s like a dream come true.”

With Coach Chris Haack rubbing the lucky coin in his 2005 pocket, Georgia cashed in at the NCAA Championship. The Bulldogs went wire-to-wire as the tournament leader at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md., finishing with an 11-shot advantage over instate rival Georgia Tech. Georgia fired an even-par 280 in the final round to wind up at 15-over 1,135. “I could not be prouder of this group of guys,” said Haack, who carried a coin given to him by his daughter, Katie, that had the inscription, “Dad, I Love You.” “I knew that we had the talent, the confidence and the demeanor to challenge for the championship this year,” Haack continued. “It’s been a good year, but we only had two wins coming in. I knew if they all put it together, it would be special. They just happened to do it this week when it meant the most.” “It’s awesome to go out like this,” said David Denham, the only senior in the Bulldogs’ lineup. “You live for moments like this. Every team strives to win the national championship, but not too many of them do it.” “This is what you play for,” Richard Scott said. “This is what this team was put together for. It’s great to go out and win other tournaments, but this is the one we all play for.” “This is the biggest one,” team captain Kevin Kisner said. “This is what you set your goals for. This is why we all came to Georgia. We’ve got too solid of a team not to win tournaments. When we all play well, it’s hard for us to lose.” The Bulldogs entered the final round with a 9-shot lead over the Yellow Jackets, and they knew it would hard to give that kind of lead away. Still, when Brendon Todd’s putt rolled in on No. 18, the players and coaches were

all at once relieved and ecstatic. “This is the ultimate feeling,” Chris Kirk said. “It’s awesome. It’s a great group of guys, and I have loved playing with them the last two years.” “It feels great,” Todd said. “It’s probably the biggest accomplishment any of us have in golf. It’s just incredible to win the national championship.” Todd wound up as the Bulldogs’ top individual at 3-over 283, followed by Kirk and Kisner at 5-over 285, Scott at 6-over 286 and Denham at 8-over 288. Todd finished seventh, and Kirk and Kisner were in the group that tied for 13th. Scott had a top-20 finish as he wound up 16th.

Southeastern Conference The Georgia men’s golf program has produced 28 Southeastern Conference championships. That is more than any other league school and the most of any athletic team at Georgia. As the accompanying chart shows, the Bulldogs have had success in several decades, including the 1950s and the 1960s when they won six in each. Under Coach Chris Haack, the Bulldogs have won seven titles, including six in the 2000s.

In the spring of 1924, a handful of Georgia students formed what was the university’s first-ever golf team. In those days, the team did not have coaches; rather, one of the players served as captain and made the decisions that guided the squad. Hollis was able to attract some of the game’s best players to Athens during his tenure, including David Boyd, Jimmy Gabrielsen,Vinny Giles and Danny Yates. Hollis stepped down following the 1970 season and he was succeeded by Dick Copas, a member of the UGA staff as an academic counselor and dorm director. Copas maintained the level of success that Hollis had begun as he guided the Bulldogs from 1971-96 to 17 NCAAs, including 10 top-10s, and seven SEC titles. Sixty-one of his protégés won All-SEC honors, while 31 were tabbed as All-Americans. Copas himself was named National Coach of the Year in 1978 and the SEC Coach of the Year seven times. Copas coached some of the most decorated players in Georgia history, including Peter Persons, Chip Beck, Griff Moody, Matt Peterson, Paul Claxton and Franklin Langham. Chris Haack stepped from the ranks of the American Junior Golf Association to assume the reins of the Georgia program after Copas. In just his third year on the job, Haack guided the 1999 Bulldogs to the program’s first national championship and he was named the National Coach of the Year. He then guided the 2005 Bulldogs to the national championship and again was chosen as the National Coach of the Year. To date, Haack also has guided the Bulldogs to seven more SEC titles – giving Georgia a league-high 28 crowns. Under Haack, Georgia has set school marks for lowest team total in a tournament and a round as well as lowest mark by an individual. Fifty-six of his players have been tabbed as All-Americans, while 59 of Haack’s players have been chosen All-SEC, including 1998 Player of the Year Jeremy Parrott, 2001 Player of the Year Nick Cassini, 2006 Player of the Year Kirk and 2010 Player of the Year Russell Henley.
