/Audition Tape/ The audition tape was meant to be all the objects on my desk talking about me. There was pencils a mug, small creatures from a previous project, a lamp and snowman cowboy. They talk about how they like my work and how hard I’ve been working before slagging me off. They all end up in an argument before I
turn up and they go back to their positions. Rather than me spelling out my qualities I thought the tape would just show what type of humour I have and my craft skills. Apart from some of the voices being a bit hard to hear I was pleased with the outcome.

/Introducing Allmaydup/ The team and their audition tapes. I chose people with a variation of styles yet with similarish humours. These were all people I had never worked with and probably my first experience of proper group work. So this was going to be a learning experience if nothing else.
/Transport/
/Crewing it up in class and at the pub/
Given transport as a theme, we decided the best way to start would be by putting aside the green aspect and writing down all the aspects of transport we could think of. This included transport suicides and accidents, how grim. This was my first experience of working with “the team” and it was off to a good start. It instantly showed that there was good synergy, we all came up with interesting ideas and no one seemed to hold back. We were all relaxed around one another and the ideas flowed easily.

Wednesday 16th (2.30-4.30) Biodiversity ‘The economics of ecosystems
Dr. Bob had a great beard but also tried the hardest to say things that related to us, as in communications. In his experience he said that to increase public awareness you had to promote solutions and success stories. People apparently did not respond well to negativity. There reasons for taking action were generally summed up by “more love”, “less loss” and “value” (value was particularly for the government). He believed that we had to choose whether we wanted to create awareness, take action or both. Bob believed that narratives were the best way of explaining problems, especially in the cases of scientifically specific causes such as biodiversity. With narratives also being able to quickly invoke emotion with the audience. When it comes to target market it was usually children and parents who were looking to the future and 50-60 (but still active) who were thinking about their legacy, often grandparents. The general idea was to find a cause PERSONALISE, HUMANISE & PUBLICISE.
Friday 18th (2-4) Human centred Design
/Talks/
Kate and Obie’s lesson was really interesting and incredibly useful. It laid out simple methods for decision making and idea generation. Before the session we had to collect data on people and then worked from that. This was quite a Participle method of working- people based design. Unfortunately this way of working did not work well with my group who were researching their own thing. We had gone away from our group each with a topic to research. The idea was to look at something that interested us so that we could narrow down our options to something to run with. I chose the dangers of transport.

/Using the ‘point’ system/ Participle described themselves as a design future service that worked with and for the people. They used concepts such as problems, obstacles, insights, needs and themes. We decided we needed a cycling system that would enable save travel and so Land Boat was born
/Bikes/
/Hector Plimmer/ The research I did on the dangers of transport focused on bikes. There are over 540,00 journeys a day and 19,000 are killed or injured in road accidents a year. It’s all very sombre stuff and I won’t bore you with the details as this was not the direction the group wanted to go in. There are already many initiatives to secure road safety and create usable cycling paths, notably by the London Cycling Campaign. I discovered that we could solve all our problems if everyone used bikes.
In the next lesson when we were all grouped we decided to each come up with as many briefs as possible then from there chose our top three. It was almost unanimous to go look at Dynamos although it was a close call with a reward system for green travelling.

/Briefs/ -Develop & design an alternative payment scheme aimed at commuters in London that rewards them based on the sustainable choices they have made. -Develop a reward scheme aimed at students to encourage them to cycle to college. -An initiative that promotes trying new and green travel. -Design a method of showing the carbon + fuel prices saved due to the congestion charge to counteract arguments that it is too expensive. -Design a site that compares the distance & shipping methods for a product so users can choose a greener option. -Build the identity for a mini (green) festival celebrating London’s canals aimed at people of varying ages. -Canal transport after a night out (east to west) -Post Olympic tourism by canal -Build the identity for a south London pop-up restaurant that prides itself on having 100% locally sourced produce/items. -Develop a bus sharing system & identity for elderly people to aid them with their shopping. -Tamigotchi – buy something and nurture it. -Dynamo attached to transport to store excess energy. Give in to energy banks/reward scheme -Delivery in city centre of flowers, food etc by horse and cart (or other green method) -Targeting a product to reduce its life cycle by substituting the transportation for a local alternative
/Dynamo/ We thought we wanted to work with dynamos. We’d seen from our research that travel needed to be improved and energy for transport was being wasted left, right and centre. The idea was that a dynamo would be attached to the wheel of a bike. There is would store kinetic energy that could then be used to power another appliance. If the energy was not enough then a reward scheme would be set up to encourage people to give their dynamos into an energy bank in return for something. We saw Sian with this idea and it seemed to be working. We had found that dynamos were quite expensive(not realising this would be the first of many cracks in out plan) so if we wanted them to be a commodity it would take a lot of investment. It was proposed that we ‘took it to the dean’ as an investment project. There was also talk of contacting LCCCC (LCC Cycle Club) and LCC (London Cycling Campaign) to get the opinion of cyclists.. We then went to see Ken who destroyed every shred of hope. He raised some good points about what problem we were solving and what we wanted to achieve. Later we spoke to a cycling fanatic and asked his opinion of dynamos. He did not like the idea and said they were outdated and ineffective. There are many dynamos that power lights and that is probably the only thing they are really useful for. We refused however to give up on pedal power. There were so many instance of the amazing feats pedal power could obtain.
“Topics to research on: What the dynamos do? How much are they? Product Reviews. Speak to cyclists. Find out which dynamo would most benefit students.” For green week we were going to bring awareness to the power of the bike and also how much energy is used to do simple tasks. Ideas included. -Making a pedal-powered zine - Pedaling to boil two pans of water 1 with a lid the other without. Highlighting the amount of extra energy to heat without a lid. - Hot people on bikes powering their homes... Sex sells. -When you leave your tv on standby a puppy dies. Or other variations on this sinister theme.
/Pedal Power/ Looking at current products and events as well as researching into how much power is needed to power certain items. In terms of research this led onto looking at household appliances and their energy use and waste. We contacted Pedal Cafe and electric pedals in the hopes of renting one of their bikes for Green week but it was completely out of our budget. They did invite us to help out at their next pedal cinema though.
/Goodbye pedals, hello plugs/ After researching the subject of pedal generated electricity, we have had to move onto a different subject. This was mainly because it was impractical and too expensive to involve the technology of companies such as ‘electric pedals’ in our project. We are now working on the subject of ‘energy wastage in the home’. Here are some facts and figures from ‘generous. org’ - Make sure lights and other electrical equipment in rooms you’re not using are turned off (not just left on standby) and only leave your chargers plugged in and switched on when you’re actually charging your device. At all other times make sure the socket is switched off and, ideally, your charger is unplugged. Did you know that 95% of the energy used by the UK’s mobile phone chargers is wasted energy? Only 5% is actually used to charge phones, the rest is used when the charger is plugged into the wall but not switched off at the socket. That’s over 50,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions that could be avoided if we all just unplugged our chargers after use. Amazingly, this is the equivalent of almost 500 football pitches’ worth of forest every year.

/Design for the people/ Our brief was to make people aware of the energy they could save when using household objects. This sort of information and design is used by companies such as Participle and Twenty Percent Extra. Design companies who work for people.
/Diagram 2/ /Diagram 1/ /Ideas/ Some ideas that came out were to have a giant tug of war (see diagram 1) to represent the effort we must put in to unplug. Only joking, but it would be funny. A representation of the money you would save. For example you can switch of your plugs and save £80 a year. Meaning you can afford to turn the heat up in your house for a week and pretend you’re on holiday. You could spend the £80 buy you 8 cats which you could then train to do your bidding. Its all a bit of fun because you could never train the cats. As a group we decided that a video telling people to turn off would work well. I thought it may have been nice to add a visual for green week.
An idea would have been to have a board full of switches and in a similar way to the arcade game ‘whack-a-mole’. The player has to switch all the switches on the board in less than 10 seconds to win. For the main advert we chose the story of a lonely plug - Clyde. At one point we discussed a battle between two people. Phantom energy, the name already belongs to waste energy and fitted nicely with a ghost. He would fight Captain Turn off seen in diagram 2. /Prototypes/ We met up to film the footage for the video in Phoebe’s room. We used suggestive imagery such as wind mills and power lines in frames. Subtle. From this first attempt we were able to get good feedback. By good I mean it was bad so we new we had to make a few changes. Overall this was positive and just made us make a better film in the end.
WWF, Fur Free, Peta, Drink Aware. All have similar messages to what we want to convey. An interest in the welfare of others and our planet. They all use a simple obvious and sometimes relatable scenario.
/Awareness Campaigns/ These are some example of where we want to fit in the market. Our idea was meant to be sort of fun yet effective. It is designed to stand out from the loud and invasive adverts that make you tune out. It will be nice to design for a good cause rather than to make money. I personally found it extraordinary that so little energy can be needed when so much is used. This is just a charger, there are many objects that do a similar or worse job. I am one of those people who leave their charger plugged in and on and my laptop is on constantly. This is just out of convenience or rather laziness. That’s where I think the gentle reminder of an advert like this
is what people need. They will watch it and say “oh yeh better switch off my charger” or better yet remember Clyde when around plugs. I hope one day dear old Clyde can have the same fame as Henry the hoover. The message we are trying to convey is one of awareness. This is how to get the attention of the viewer. When researching their were some solutions to this. Intelligent surge protectors sense when an appliance is off and automatically cut the power. We offer an alternative that is free and easy that is to just switch it off. I also wouldn’t put it past the surge protector to cut the power at an important time.
/Filming/ The footage was not good enough. We repeated the process but shot in raw as well as using a better tripod. It had a fluid head which made the panning shots smoother. We added better text and a sound clip. This was probably the hardest part to decide on with some member still not happy with the final decision. You can see the results by looking at the before and after shots above.
/Developments/ We made many many changes to the video. There was a version that had an animated Clyde talking. There were even trials of Clyde’s face or Paula before he was made a boy. We did want to make a series of these videos but the footage we shot was a bit, well rubbish. I’ve included screen shots from it. The video was about ‘Susan Standby’ a rather neurotic t.v that felt like she was always awake and buzzing, or in a state of semi consciousness.

/Green Week/ /Issue/ Energy wasted in the home: 95% of energy produced by phone chargers is wasted and only 5% is actually used to charge phones.
/Solution/ To create awareness of the small ways in which we can save electricity, by simply unplugging devices when not being used. Viewers are lead to believe that a person is talking throughout only to find that the voice is in fact a plug.
