ZO E B A L L

fri 9th march 14.30 FREE jm315 (the millais theatre) Zoe Ball needs little introduction, after ‘kick starting’ her career on ‘Live & Kicking’ alongside Jamie Theakston in the late 90’s. She wasted no time in extending her BBC portfolio to be the first woman to present the prime-time radio 1 breakfast show. Fast forward to 2005 and Zoe regularly dazzled viewers on that year’s series of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ and in 2011 she became the face of SKY ART’S Summer Music Festival Coverage. Over the summer of 2011 she reported on a host of popular music festivals including Isle of Wight, Latitude and Bestival, bringing viewers the very best in interviews and performances. With having expertise in all forms of the industry, at this year’s SMILE you can expect to hear her first hand account of she made it big and advice to students on how they can break into the industry like she did. Zoe will be awarded a Teaching Fellowship in recognition of her contribution to music in the media.

BRIGGY SMALE

Briggy Smale, best known for presenting the entertainment news on the Jo Whiley Show on Radio 1, is coming to SMILE to join Zoe Ball on the couch.

Ever fancied putting on a music festival but not sure how? New to SMILE this year is a unique opportunity FOR students to be quiz a panel of music festival experts from the Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) and get the inside information on what to do, and equally what not to do when putting on a festival. The AIF is a non-profit trade association created to represent UK independent music festivals as a whole. The organisation’s aim is to aid the businesses of their member festival organisers and help the needs of the independent festival sector itself. In a report prepared by the AIF it was estimated that independent festivals generate over £135million for then UK economy, and £16.3million for local businesses. Over 300,000 people attend events managed by the AIF and as each year goes on, more ideas are being introduced to help improve festival attributes.

SMILE 2012 LIVE

In 2011 SMILE was extended from being a one-day speaker event into a festival that incorporated a host of live events. Previous gigs have included such delights as an all dayer at Hamptons, a Solent Music Performers showcase at The Joiners and a one-off Greasy Lips Disco with Creation Records guru Alan McGee giving advice to a host of Solent Uni bands at The Cellar. The line up of Fly Frankie, Fly, The Widowmaker, Cardinals, Influx and The Lost Boys proved to be in rude health with an amazing night of inspiring sounds. This year SMILE 2012 LIVE returns with a line up that’s bigger and better than before. Kicking off with a special set by legendary Producers (see page 16), the week will include SMILE Fringe, a series of gigs bringing together creative artists in unusual spaces (see page 9), some cracking nights of cutting edge sounds brought to you by Rock Paper Scissors (see page 11) and SMILE in the Square (see page 13), our first outdoor event. Don’t forget to keep checking the website for info. More gigs in more venues being added all of the time…

WHO ARE THE MEN BEHIND PRODUCERS? TREVOR HORN | LOL CREME | STEPHEN LIPSON | CHRIS BRAIDE | ASH SOAN

ASSOCIATED ACTS:

PET SHOP BOTS | 10CC | THE ROLLING STONES | LANA DEL RAY | ADELE

On Monday 5th March legendary music producers Trevor Horn, Lol Crème, Steve Lipson, Chris Braide and Ash Soan, also known as Producers, are coming to SMILE. The studio veterans formed a band back in 2006 and, after having spent the last six years playing gigs at a number of London pubs, they are about to release their debut album, ‘Made In Basing Street,’ in May 2012. Prior to this, they are embarking on a tour of universities, stopping off in Southampton for SMILE 2012 to give a guest lecture in JM315 as well as playing a few hits from their thirty year back catalogue. Guitarist Steve Lipson is particularly looking forward to coming to Smile, exclaiming that he is “really happy” about performing, as well as sharing their “huge wealth of knowledge” during the guest lecture and Q&A. “It’s always really enjoyable, talking to people and hearing their take on things and also hearing what their questions are.” During their set, there will be recognisable past hits for everybody to enjoy, along with new songs from their upcoming debut album. “We’ve got a combination of original songs and songs that we’ve recorded over the years that people might know, between us we’ve got quite a few hits.” If you’ve never listened to Producers, their style of music varies, from

tantalising snyth-pop to ambient new wave. Stephen describes it as being “on the one hand pop, on the other hand rock and on the other hand its prog rock. I can’t really explain it; I don’t know what it is. But I like it and I would listen to it.” The only way you will really be able to get a feel for their music is by coming down to the gig and listening for yourself.
