INCARCERATION - THESIS January 2020 - June 2020
The brief is for a Young Offender Institution for males aged under 21, focusing on rehabilitation rather than punishment. The aim is that fair treatment, education and skill building will help vulnerable young people break free from cycles of habitual reoffending. In the heart of Bristol, the proposed YOI on Spike Island is bound on two sides by bodies of water. Prisons are often located at a considerable distance from the urban realm, exaggerating their negative prejudice and inmate isolation. The YOI presents a local, smaller scale prison for youths, providing access to support networks and also the wider community. Blocks are zoned into public and private - with institutional spaces represented in timber and living spaces in red brick. Residents are grouped into small house blocks at a familiar dwelling scale and utilising vernacular domestic construction, such as brickwork and pitched roofs.

BASIL SPENCE October 2019 - December 2019
In this multi-disciplinary group project, we set out to provide Filton not just an icon, but a beacon: a true flagship to draw visitors to the new Brabazon development from miles around. The tower is a timber hyperboloid lattice, and provides office and ‘expo’ space for local start-up technology companies. A central 40m exhibition void can suspend artwork, including a model of the new development and an exploded Chinook Helicopter. The top of the tower houses a luxury bar and viewing platform with exclusive views over Filton, Bristol and beyond. At the foot of the tower, a concrete building holds a range of facilities to serve the new Brabazon community, including a small music venue and lecture hall.

A PROTEST IN VENICE November 2018 - January 2019
Venice is struggling with mass tourism and the subsequent expulsion of local people, who feel forgotten in the current climate. The building would act as a hub for locals comprising a multi-purpose activism space, library, boat workshop, medical facilities and shared co-housing flats. The aim was for the building itself to become a protest. Through the use of an interactive facade facing the campo, building occupants are given full control, choosing whether it is open or closed. The result was a low-tech approach in which low cost materials, uncommon to Venice, create a “blank canvas” for residents to make their own. Through the facade and function, the building will empower the local community and reclaim the campo (or ‘square’), responding against tourism in the overwhelmed Venice of the 21st century.

COOMBES EVERITT ARCHITECTS March 2019 - September 2019
During my time at Coombes Everitt in Cheltenham, I was involved in both commercial and residential projects, ranging from bespoke single dwellings to larger masterplans. With projects around the Cotswolds and the South-West, I gained experience of design within conservation areas and historic listing requirements. Modelling in SketchUp and in 2D and 3D in ArchiCAD, I worked in various stages, from Preparation to Construction, and preparing drawing sets which the I submitted in planning applications. I also experienced working with BIM in collaboration with others in shared ArchiCAD files and attended meetings on site. I also created promotional marketing material for the company using Adobe CC Suite for events and online.

VIVID ARCHITECTS February 2018 - September 2018
During my 7 months at Vivid Architects Ltd in Worcester, I was mainly involved in residential projects, in particular a housing scheme for four 3-bed units. This was inspired by the vernacular ‘barn’ style, utilising a local material palette. I modelled the site and buildings in ArchiCAD and produced a full set of planning drawings for submission, meeting the clients throughout the process. This included several 3D visuals and diagrams for the Design and Access statement.

HOBBIES & INTERESTS
In my spare time, I enjoy exploring my creativity through painting. I have spent lockdown, improving my handsketching and have a keen interest in music, playing the saxophone, clarinet and am currently learning the ukulele. Through my role of Media and Marketing Representative on the University of Bath ACE (Architecture and Civil Engineering Society) Committee, I designed advertisements for both educational and social events and managed the society social media and website. In the past few weeks I have completed the Passivhaus training course and hope to work for a practice that shares my passion for sustainability.
