Let’s be honest. Kraków wasn’t my first choice when I decided to study abroad. Normally, I was supposed to go in Australia, to improve my english and take a bit of sun (or maybe because I always secretely wanted to adopt a little   baby kangourou, I really can’t remember !). But actually, there had been some problems and I had to make another choice in one day. I really wanted to go somewhere very different from Paris, where I will discover another culture. So in 10 mn I decided to go to Kraków. Mostly because I knew that I will be able to learn some old techniques we don’t have in our school and then, of course, to improve my resistance at vodka. (i’m just kidding right ?). Now I’m here since a moment, and I just can say that I made a very good choice, because this city is really amazing ! Beautiful and vibrant. So, this is what’s about this little book : a good, funny and untypical guide of Kraków like I discovered it. I really hope it will makes you want to come. And if not, it’s just because you are definitely not in off cool to read it.

Kraków is the second largest and one of the oldest cities in Poland. Situated on the Vistula River in the Lesser Poland region, the city dates back to the 7th century. Kraków has traditionally been one of the leading centres of Polish academic, cultural, and artistic life and is one of Poland’s most important economic hubs. It was the capital of Poland from 1038 to 1569. It’s now the capital of Lesser PolandVoivodeship. The city has grown from a Stone Age settlement to Poland’s second most important city. It began as a hamlet on Wawel Hill and was already being reported as a busy trading centre of Slavonic Europe in 965. With the establishment of new universities and cultural venues at the emergence of the Second Polish Republic in 1918 and throughout the 20th century, Kraków trully reaffirmed its role as a major national academic and artistic centre. After the invasion of Poland at the start of World War II, Kraków became the capital of Germany’s General Government. The Jewish population was moved into a walled zoneknown as the Kraków Ghetto, from which they  were sent to German extermination camps like Auschwitz and the concentration camps as Paszów.

CRACOVIA ! CRACOVIA !

The weather in Kraków is quite the same than in Paris, Berlin or London   (Typical borring continental climate)  except that its a little bit colder and that you can have –15°C during the winter. But when it happens, it doesn’t last so long, so don’t freak out if you are in it. You will loose just few fingers and maybe your nose.  So yes, it’s the typical weather which can be very good in April and after  that, rainy during all May if you see what I mean. So, basically, if you want to have a good advice, check the weather every day ! Because it changes all the time ! I don’t know if it’s because people working for these things are so bored that they drink during all the day but watching the weather for all the week is quite useless. Keep in mind too that there is a lot of humidity here ! So even if it’s 20°C, you feel it lesser. Especially the night. Cover you up good, I know that vodka makes you warmer but believe me, it doesn’t protect you against the cold you will have the day after. But the good thing about it, it’s that you can have nights with a lot of fog, and the city is really beautiful when it’s like this !

INTRODUCTION TO THE POLISH

I think that everybody like me, who came in Poland for few months, thought naively that he would be able to learn another language. Let’s be clear : Polish is one of the most difficult language to learn on this planet so don’t think you will can learn it so fastly. The problem is that, even if you want to try to read something, it’s fucking impossible ! And even if you learn it good, polish people prefear to speak with you in english because your accent is too bad to understand it well. Yes, it’s a little bit sad. But the thing you have to know it’s that most of people can talk in english (mostly young generation, the old fashion one, it’s more difficult). So, you just have to learn few phrases to actually survive and after that, you can talk in english, with your hands or whatever, be creative ! And if you’re staying a little bit longer than a week, I think It will be much easier to learn it after have been used to hear it during few months. But obviously,  you will need more than this book, like a professor for exemple...

BEST PLACES TO EAT

The staff warmly welcomed  us into their burger bar, offering us an extensive menu where we were able to choose amongst 21 gastronomic burgers with exotic names ranging from Napoleon to Elvis. These burgers taste absolutely. DELICIOUS  !  The meat is well prepared and the combination of toppings matched perfectly with the burger.  All burgers vary from 150 to 200 grams. So make sure you have a nice appetite when you visit these lovers of cows.

CORNER BURGER

Kraków’s Battle of the Burgers is officially underway and this small feed station makes a very strong argument for itself. With a few elements of Americanalaminated menus, classic chequered tablecloths the simple interior stops short of achieving any retro-chic appeal it might be trying for, thanks in part to amateurish paitings of J. Winfield declaring ‘Tasty Burger !’ We certainly wouldn’t disagree with that, though : requiring two hands  and  enough concentration to kill any mealtime conversation you could have.

Pod Baranem, open since 1997 and situated just a couple hundred metres from Wawel Castle is fine example of proper Polish cuisine. Inside, Pod Baranem has five rooms that can seat up to around 100 people. Antique furniture and linen table-cloths give a late 19th century bourgeois feel offset by plenty of natural light. Dishes are cooked fresh to order and the uniformed service is friendly. The bill will come as a revelation to   anyone used to western European prices, but perhaps most telling is the popularity of Pod Baranem with Kraków natives a sure sign of quality and value

There’s no logical reason that we can think of why putting a bar upstairs on the first floor should make it cool. And yet make it cool it most certainly does, as this natty little number proves. of Plac Szczepański, the solid playlist rotates funk and soul,  electro, dub-step, hip-hop and pop. Really good to dance ! Pl. Szczepański 2, Stare Miasto Open Mon-Sat : 10:00-04:00

This Dutch cargo barge dates back to 1889 and was once significant enough to the history of water transport to be featured on a Dutch postage stamp. Since then it has been modernised by Polish craftsmen with thrilling results. All the year, you can eat and take a  drink on this boat. But sometimes, parties are organised and it just becomes an amazing place with good electro music ! But try not to come too late if your really want to enjoy the party when it's not so crowded (There is only two toilets for everybody...)

WHAT IS GOOD TO SEE ?

Polish people are use to drink strong alcohol. We are not ! I know that you will be tempted to say that you’re really resistant, but don’t try ! Believe me or not, I just warn you. If you don’t want to finish face to face with the floor, just don’t try to make the proud guy if you see  what I mean...(And actually, don’t try with the slovakians neather).

IT’S BEAUTIFUL BUT YOU SEE IT ONE TIME AND AFTER THAT I THINK YOU’RE GOOD FOR ALL YOUR LIFE

WHAT IS GOOD TO SEE ?

Wawel is a fortified architectural complex erected over many centuries atop a limestoneoutcrop on the left bank of the Vistula river at an altitude of 228 metres above sea level. The complex consists of many buildings and big fortifications ; the largest and best known of these are the Royal Castle and the Wawel Cathedral which is the Basilica of St Stanisław and St Wacław). Some of Wawel’s oldest stone buildings, such as the Rotunda of the Virgin Mary can be dated to 970AD There are also wooden parts of the complex which date to about the 9th century. The castle itself has been described as “one of the most fascinating of all European castles. The first time I saw the this Castle, it was winter and there were snow everywhere. Honestly, I think it’s great if you can   see it like that because, it’s really beautifull. It worths enduring the cold, believe me ! But obviously, it’s cool to visit it when  it is sunny too. You have a great view on the Wisla river and a big part of Kraków. You can go then make a walk just next to the river and enjoy you’re day quietly.  Just a detail, I don’t know what they have done with the decoration of the church,  but obviously the outside is much better than the inside ! You’ll be able to see so much better in the city...

The Vistula, in polish Wisła is a really good place to go when there is sun on the weekends, just to relax. You will see, as soon as the sun is coming, there is a lot of people there, just enjoying. Because obviously few month ago, the river was frozen and the ducks were just in pain. However, it’s beautiful to see it like this too, but the thing is that when the Wisla is frozen, your feets too ! (I think you can stay outside an hour if your brave before crying thinking you just have lost your hands). So, obviously it’s quite better when the weather become a little bit warmer. Because the good thing about it, it’s that there is grass by the river. Grass where you can just lay on with your sunglasses during all the afternoon.  With the Wawel Castle next to you. It's quite priceless. In paris you just have concrete for exemple (it’s a bit less cumfortable).  You have a little road, where you can just walk, make bicycle, rollerskates, or ride a sweet unicorn. I am pretty sure you will enjoy it a lot  !

SALT MINE REACHES A DEPTH OF 327 MET AND IS OVER 287 KM LONG !!!

The Wieliczka Salt Mine (Kopalnia soli Wieliczka) located in the town of Wieliczka in southern Poland, lies within the Kraków metropolitan area. The mine, built in the 13th century, produced table salt continuously until  2007, as one of the world’s oldest salt mines still in operation. From its beginning and throughout its existence, the Royal mine was run by the Żupy Krakówskie Salt Mines. Commercial mining was discontinued in due to low salt prices and mine flooding. I really recomend you to visit it, because it’s completely surrealistic ! You'e got the impression to be in The Lord Of the Ring when you’re in it. You’re gonna see few things that you didn’t even know it was possible to built, espacially so soon in the history.  The mine’s attractions include dozens of statues, three chapels and an entire cathedral that has been carved out of the rock salt by the miners. The oldest sculptures are augmented by the new carvings by contemporary artists. There is few tourist point in the center where you can buy tickets for approximatively 100 zl if you choose the visit in english, including the transport and tickets with a complete audio guide visite.

MOCAK, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Kraków, opened to national acclaim in early 2011, and even the president of Poland was in attendance. Such a grand opening was a hard act to follow, but the museum has succeeded in delivering on all its promises of providinga showcase for the best art of the past two decades. It boasts an impressive permanent collection, including worksof international artists such as Tomasz Bajer, Edward Dwurnik, Kriztof Kintera, Ragnar Kjartansson, Jarosław Kozłowski, Robert Kuśmirowski, Lars Laumann or Bartek Materka...There are also regular temporary exhibitions, and the museum is home to Poland’s only specialist con-servation workshop for contemporary art. Set alongside the exhibitions, next too and partly within the workshops at the former Schindler factory, are a library, bookshop and cafe. From my point of you, it’s not the best modern museum I saw in my life. But it is maybe because it’s a little bit hard to appreciate the works when you don’t like so much conceptual art. But, despite of everything, the building is amazing and worths to come even if you don’t appreciate what’s in the museum... ul. Lipowa 4, 30-702, Kraków

For centuries the town of Oświęcim has been a quiet backwater commu nity, largely bypassed by world events. Ichanged with WWII when Oświęcim, known as ‘Auschwitz’ under German occupation, became the chosen site of the largest death camp in the Third Reich. Around 1.3 M of people were exterminated here, etching the name of Auschwitz forever into the history books ; countless films, books, and survivor accounts have since burned it into the collective consciousness. The Auschwitz Museum and tour present one of the most horrific acts in human history with a level of tact, passion, poinancy and professionalism that is so profound, it almost makes as lasting an impression as the site itself. Without being heavy-handed, the history of the site ispresented in all of its contexts and guestsare perhaps spared from   fully surrendering to their emotions only by the sheer relentlessness of the information. It's doesn't matter how much you think you know on the subject, It is a site of human concern. I trully believe everyone should visit. Open Sept-March : 08:00-16:00 From April : 08:00-17:00, from May : 08:00-18:00, from June : 08:00-19:00

Built between around 1938 and situated just 10 mn walk from the Main Square, The Hala Targowa is a shopping market with different faces. From Monday to Saturday morning it is a vivid food and clothing shopping market. But at night it is famous spot for quick eat of famous sausage and bun from a bar on the wheel. But on Sunday morning it becomes this huge open-air flea market. The real flea market where you can get everything from religious souvenirs, crockery, postcards, clothes, jewellery,  books and antiques. The locals say that if you were robbed, the first place you can go to flea market and there is a chance you will find there your stuff. Needless to say, it is the best place if you are looking for unique, antique stuff for a goodprice. If you want to bring with you authentic piece of Polish history, just forget shitty souvenir shops, an dvisit Hala Targowa onSunday morning.
