October 2018
A Message from Tim What God is Able to Do The last Sunday of September we have a celebration of our church and all that God accomplishes through the work of our church when we are obedient to God’s call. The apostle Paul reminded us in Ephesians 3:20 that “God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to this power that is at work within us.” In the Gospel of John we have an example. Jesus met a Samaritan woman with a broken life who was unable to associate with those in society. That is why she was at the well at the hour she was, when no one else was there. However, after she met Jesus she was able to share her story with the people because of the power and transformative nature of her conversation with Christ. Germantown United Methodist Church has been a tremendous presence in the life of my own family, not only since my wife and I arrived a year-and-a-half ago, but in the years of my childhood in which I was raised in this Community of Faith. I am a witness to the power of community, faith, and outreach for the sake of the Kingdom that is Germantown UMC. The church taught me the faith in which to walk, supported us in times of sickness, gave a safe community for acceptance and service, and provided worship and music that was inspiring and challenging. I share that in praise of God with all that I can. Each of us has a story about the effect of Christ in our lives through the community of Germantown UMC. That is a story each of us can share. Let’s continue to celebrate what Christ is able to do in all of us what we cannot accomplish apart from God.
2018 Charge Conference A “Charge” in the United Methodist structure is: “One or more local United Methodist churches to which an ordained or licensed minister is appointed by the bishop. The pastoral charge is organized according to The Book of Discipline and has a Charge Conference.” A Charge is the connecting link between a congregation and the General church. “The primary responsibilities of the charge conference in the annual meeting shall be to review and evaluate the total mission and ministry of the church, receive reports, and adopt objectives and goals recommended by the church council that are in keeping with the objectives of The 240 United Methodist Church.” M

Membership Lisa Archer joined Germantown United Methodist Church on Sunday, September 23rd at the 9:40 worship service by transfer of her membership from a sister United Methodist Church in the Memphis area. Lauren Boswell is her sponsor. When asked what about Germantown United Methodist Church made her wish to become a part of our church community, she responded: “Germantown is our home. Our son grew up in this church and we were welcomed so warmly when our family visited. He enjoyed many years playing and growing in Christ with the Sunday school classes, Boy Scouts, camp, VBS and many other activities. We left for a few years to attend another church who needed us on their mission team, but I am glad to come back home. Everyone is just as hospitable and welcoming as they were years ago.”
Adult Education Mary Groh - mgroh@germantownumc.org - 901-754-5093 “Am I My Brother’s Keeper?” Series in October A series of four lessons focusing on the timeless question, “Am I My Brother’s Keeper,” begins October 14 in the Alpha Sunday School class at 9:45 a.m. Alpha meets behind the kitchen in Fellowship Hall. When most people think of killing they think literally. But there are other ways to murder someone – by killing their spirit, their chances at a decent life, their happiness. In the next few weeks this series will offer speakers and discussions on issues that can kill people in ways most people don’t often imagine. On October 14, Rev. David Weatherspoon, chaplain at Le Bonheur Hospital and former candidate for state senate, will discuss healthcare. On October 21 the series will hear from Claudia Haltom, former Juvenile Court Judicial Magistrate and founder of A Step Ahead Foundation that helps women plan their families. The executive director of Latino Memphis, Mauricio Calvo, will speak in Fellowship Hall on October 28 to discuss immigration. Finally, the series returns to the Alpha classroom on November 18 with Shante Avant, member of Shelby County Board of Education and Deputy Director for the Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis (WFGM). She will discuss poverty issues. Through all the discussions Alpha challenges everyone to ask: “Am I my brother’s keeper?” 2

SPOTLIGHT ON ADULT
Sunday School Spotlight: Apostles The Apostles Class is a group of middle-aged and a little past middle-aged adults who enjoy learning about the Bible, histories or religions, applications of scripture to our everyday lives, and other contemporary topics of interest. The Apostles Class meets at 9:40 a.m. in Room 338 in the Hamilton Ministry Center.
SUNDAY SCHOOL
Our curriculum consists of biblical learning series that various pastors have written, as well as having speakers come in and address historical topics and missions in which our class can participate. Series we have covered this past year include: Love Does by Bob Goff, Faithful (an Advent series), and Moses: In the Footsteps of the Reluctant Prophet both by Adam Hamilton. Often, we as a church fail to take advantage of all the lessons and history the Old Testament offers. The Moses series was extremely enlightening and well worth the time to review the history of the Exodus and the time in the Wilderness. For mission work, our class regularly participates in Room in the Inn. We provide presents to underprivileged children from Charjean Elementary during the Christmas season and individual class members participate in various other mission endeavors throughout the church. Though reading and understanding the Bible is a huge part of what this class does, we also have some terrific socials. The class participated in an Escape Room followed by dinner, but the highlight of the year for socials had to be the trip to Branson and The Sight and Sound Theater. Samson was the play they were doing this year and former class member, Mike Smith, presented a lesson on Samson prior to the trip. The weekend was a great opportunity for the class to socialize, eat great food, see outstanding scenery and watch a fantastic play. It was also one of the few times many members of the class had seen snow in April. If you want to join us in our studies and life events, we would love to have you visit us and become a member of the Apostles Class as we go through our walk with God.
Sunday School Spotlight: Emmanuel If you are looking to join an established Sunday School class that is in a season of refreshment and rejuvenation, Emmanuel is it! The Emmanuel class is a relaxed, supportive group of mostly couples in their 30s and 40s who enjoy Bible-based teaching and discussion about the relevant topics in our lives and the world. We meet at 11:00 a.m. in Room 136, which is located directly behind the kitchen adjacent to the Fellowship Hall. Our time together usually includes catching up over coffee and snacks, announcements about what is going on in the life of the church as well as our own class missions, followed by a member-taught lesson that is often part of a larger series. The Emmanuel class also enjoys getting together for both family and adult social gatherings outside of church. Our current teaching series is based on the book Sticky Faith: Everyday Ideas to Build Lasting Faith in Your Kids. A few constant and upcoming missions that are near and dear to the Emmanuel class include Room in the Inn, Caldwell-Guthrie Elementary School, Door of Hope Writers’ Group, the 2015 Miles for Melanoma race and volunteering at numerous GUMC events. For more information about the Emmanuel Sunday School class, please contact our class president, Josh Jacobs at joshuagjacobs@gmail.com.

Music Todd Wilson, Director of Music Ministry - twilson@germantownumc.org The last time I wrote for The Tidings I outlined the beginnings of Music Ministry ensemble rehearsals. Things have gotten off to a great start. I’m glad to be at GUMC leading this wonderful ministry. Music in the church really has one primary outlet. Worship. There are many outlets for other ministries that get us out into the community and well beyond. That is the nature of those vital ministries. The nature of music in the church is weekly preparation to lead in weekly worship. The Ancient Modern band members are weekly preparers as are Chancel Choir members. That’s the group I specifically promote today. Did you sing in High School or College choirs? Do you sing in your car? Stoplight Serenader like me, right? Or maybe the shower is your singing comfort zone? Have you been on stage with the Memphis Opera or the Met? I have a place for you to exercise your voice, spirit, body and mind. Chancel Choir rehearsals – Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. All you need is a willingness to learn, serve and be in fellowship with other choristers. That’s it! No audish! Prefer not to sing but can recognize talent? I need you to be part of the new pew patrol, keeping an eye, and ear, out for potential singers. Funnel them my way and I’ll take it from there! Chancel Choir, where we get biblical! Colossians 3:16 – Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.
GUMP Weekday Preschool
Sarah Sutton - ssutton@germantownumc.org - 901-753-3109
Fall is in the air and GUMP continues to be off to a wonderful start! GUMP takes such care, with much intention, in serving our children and families. We strive to partner with each family, meeting them where they are, supporting the cares and concerns they carry, and celebrating the joy and wonder happening in their lives. GUMP invests in our little people, but we also support and love the family. We value the opportunities we are given each day! Our tiniest friends continue to settle into routine and transitions. Our two year old friends continue to explore the wonder and experiences of a big kid classroom. Our three year old friends are enjoying new cognitive challenges and learning to choose things of interest. Our four year old and five year old friends had a wonderful time at their “getting to know you” family picnic. Shannon Lenoir Portraits came to take individual photos of all our friends to capture those moments in time – such precious, and silly portraits were made! AND, specialty classes began – Music with Mr. Dave and Chapel with Ms. Lisa (GUMC’s Children’s Director). Fascinating things are happening at GUMP to build developmentally strong children – cognitively, socially, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of our friends through play! Our multi-sensory approach includes the use of Handwriting Without Tears. Our friends pictured here are engaged in building “Mat Man” from this program. Handwriting Without Tears offers a variety of ways for children to learn pre-writing and writing skills in an age appropriate, fun way! We would love for you to see all the wonderful things happening here! We have a limited number of openings still available for the 2018/2019 school year. If you would like further information, please 5 contact the preschool office at 901-753-3109 or visit our website at www.mygump.org
Missions In the winter of early 2013, my bible study group took a meal to share at Room in the Inn (RITI). I was nervous. I was not sure what I would say to a homeless person. I was not sure if they would smell bad or behave oddly. But, once they arrived and we sat down to share a meal, all those fears evaporated. After the meal, Lisa Anderson, the executive director of RITI, asked if our group would like to know more about Room in the Inn. She told us her church went every Tuesday evening to pick up 12-15 homeless guests, fed them, gave them a safe place to sleep, and took them back downtown the next day. It wasn’t about solving the problem of homelessness as much as it was about relieving some of the burden of being homeless by giving them a warm safe place to sleep. Jesus said the poor will always be with us. The Gospels reveal how much of his ministry was about serving their needs. And so, following that example, we at Room in the Inn also serve their needs as best we can. This November marks the beginning of the ninth winter season for Room in the Inn – Memphis. Over that period of time, this ministry has gone from one church hosting one night a week to nearly 50 faith communities and nonprofits operating seven days a week – sometimes with as many as five churches hosting at once. It has been amazing to watch what God has done, bringing together different denominations, people of different socioeconomic backgrounds, and frankly, people with different cultural predispositions. The model for Room in the Inn is working. It is working well. Here, at Germantown United Methodist Church, the outreach ministry called the Cottage has become an integral part of Room in the Inn – Memphis. Now boasting nine congregations sharing a common goal, the Cottage will be used to host homeless men, women, and children Tuesdays through Saturdays Nov. 1 through March 31. Challenges often accompany growth. The current challenge for RITI – Memphis is to secure a more stable financial foundation. Monthly donors are the cornerstone of that foundation and we need more of them. Across Shelby County, RITI has engaged more than 1,200 volunteers. If 500 of those volunteers would commit to a monthly contribution of $25, the operating budget of RITI – Memphis would be covered. If you would like to become an Innkeeper (AKA monthly donor), visit https://secure.givelively.org/donate/room-in-the-inn-memphis/theinnkeepers-memphis or text INNKEEPER to 44321. For more information about serving at Room in the Inn at GUMC, contact Alise Davis at alisedavis4@gmail.com or 901-496-6402.

United Methodist Women continued Chesley Porteous - women@germantownumc.org November GUMW Luncheon GUMW welcomes Karen Eskin to our luncheon on November 13 at 11:30 a.m. in the Mike Wilson Fellowship Hall. Join us to hear her story of love and gratitude for our amazing local children’s hospital, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. She is a former Le Bonheur Club president whose son was also treated at Le Bonheur. Cost is $10. Register at germantownumc.org. Deadline to register: November 8, noon. Free childcare available. Karen Eskin was born in Syracuse, New York, but grew up near Miami in Homestead, Florida. She is from a large family where she is the oldest of five children. She attended the University of Florida where she received a B.S. in Chemistry as well as her MBA. Karen worked for Baxter Diagnostics as a chemist in Quality Control and Immunochemistry. She was also a business manager for a large medical practice and is currently a Professional Organizer specializing in relocation, time management, and business productivity. Karen joined Le Bonheur Club in 2004 and has served in various roles including Entertainment Chair, Newsletter Chair, Yearbook Chair, Finance Chair, Treasurer, and most recently President. Her love of Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital runs very deep. When her oldest child Brendan was seven, he was involved in a horrific accident in carline at school and was air lifted from the school to Le Bonheur. At first, doctors were not sure he would make it through the night due to his severe injuries. However, through faith, prayer, love, and the quality of care he received at Le Bonheur, he is now a senior at UT Knoxville studying chemistry and pursuing a field in medicine. When she is not volunteering for Le Bonheur Club, Karen enjoys spending time with her husband Marc and their three children, Brendan, Logan, and Madeline. Both Brendan and Logan are students at UT Knoxville, while Madeline attends Houston High School. When she isn’t visiting her sons in Knoxville and watching her daughter play competitive soccer, Karen enjoys cooking, reading, gardening, and entertaining.
