| PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Auf Zeitreise

Going Down Memory Lane

Liebe Leser,

Dear Reader

Most of the time, I especially enjoy working with our senior editor Jenny Peters and our art director Anna-Maria Furlong on the cover story; but preparing this issue’s topic – Nena on U.S. Tour – took us very unexpectedly on a sentimental journey down memory lane.

When researching what Nena had been up to these past 33 years since her iconic song “99 Luftballons” (“99 Red Balloons”) hit the charts in 1983 and became an all-time favorite worldwide, I listened to many of her songs again on YouTube.com. “Nur geträumt,” “Irgendwo, irgendwie, irgendwann” and “Wunder geschehen” took me down memory lane. There they were again, the Eighties (my Twenties), when we watched “Grease” and listened to Sheena Easton, Blondie, Kim Wilde . . . and Nena. It was the time when the young generation in Germany hated living in a divided country, felt the angst of the constant presence of the Cold War and were longing for peace. “99 Luftballons” hit the nerve of that era like no other. Nena’s song also expressed the feelings of young people around the globe and the catchy beat made it a favorite at dance clubs worldwide. Still today, “99 Luftballons” is the most-chosen Karaoke song in the U.S. and American students of German, like our assistant editor Alexa Constantine, often practiced their German language skills by listening to it and singing along.

So what took Nena so long to finally go on tour in the U.S.? And how has she developed musically as an artist? These and many other questions are answered in our cover story. Even better: Rediscover Nena and attend one of her concerts or enjoy her songs online. And why not have your kids join you and let them experience a seminal piece of German pop culture? Enjoy!

October 6

German-American Day Revisited “Our citizens of German descent excel in every discipline and open our minds to the expanses of human possibility. When we drive across a suspension bridge, listen to music played on a Steinway piano or send a child to kindergarten, their unique traditions and customs surround us.” – President Barak Obama

Oktoberfest might still be on everybody’s mind but the most important date for Americans of German descent is just around the corner: German-American Day on October 6. This date commemorates the landing of 13 Quaker families from Krefeld, Germany, in Pennsylvania, who founded the city of Germantown, Pennsylvania, in 1683. A survey from 2012 showed that today around 50 million people in the U.S. claim some level of German heritage, which makes them the largest ancestry group in the U.S.

A

ccording to “The German-Americans: An Ethnic Experience” by Willi Paul Adams, published by the Max Kade Institute for Austrian, German, and Swiss studies, a slow but steady stream of Germans immigrated to the U.S. starting in the 1680s. The tolerant Quaker colony of Germantown served as a beachhead for the immigration of pietistic and other Protestant minorities. When the first American census was taken in 1790, Pennsylvania’s German population was put at 225,000, which amounts to a third of the state’s entire population. Immigration from Germany and other European states really picked up, however, in the early 19th century. European mass immigration to the United States began in earnest only after the end of the Napoleonic wars in 1815, at a time when unimpeded transatlantic commercial shipping resumed. Soon a first major wave of 20,000 emigrants from southwestern Germany took place, occasioned by major crop failures in the years 1816-17. As time went by, immigrants from all regions of the German Empire arrived in the United States where, allegedly, German dialect barriers between Bavarians and East Prussians were occasionally overcome with the help of English. The first peak of German immigration to North America came in the year 1854, when more than 220,000 Germans were registered as arrivals tp American ports. Immigration then declined because of World War I and the Great Depression, rising only after the fall of Nazi Germany. After World War I, the era of unlimited European immigration to the United States came to an end. Newly enacted immigration quota laws for the years 1924 and 1929 limited immigrants from the “Weimar Republic” to only 25,957 per year. Because of the worldwide economic crisis of the 1930s, this quota was never lifted, not even to rescue Jewish refugees from Nazi terror. For the entire decade of the 1930s, therefore, the statistics show only 119,107 legal immigrants from the German Reich -- among them thousands of intellectuals, writers, artists, actors and musicians, making this a real “brain drain” for Germany. After World War II, generous exceptions were made for “Displaced Persons,” German war brides and others who could no longer envision a future in Europe. This resulted in a considerable number of postwar emigrants and brought about another “brain drain” of highly qualified persons during the 1950s and ‘60s. During these two decades, 786,000 Germans crossed the Atlantic to find a better standard of living, prior to the sweeping cultural liberalization of the late 1960s. Today there is a German belt extending from eastern Pennsylvania to Oregon. According to Bloomberg News, a majority of counties in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana and the Dakotas are predominantly German, and they make up a plurality of Ohio and Indiana counties. Census figures show German-Americans are slightly older and better educated than the general population, with one third having a bachelor’s degree or higher. More than 85 percent live in the same place as they did in 2009 and 40 percent are employed in management, business, science or the arts. With so many residents of German descent, it’s no surprise that the celebration of German-American Day on October 6 means parties and parades across America. After all, it’s in our blood! ¦

IN BRIEF | Kurz Kurznotiert Notiert

 State Elections in Germany: Social Democrats receive most votes in Berlin election

T

he Social Democratic Party (SPD) led by Berlin Mayor Michael Müller has picked up 21.5 percent of the vote in Berlin’s state election. “We have reached our goal. We have a mandate to form a government,” said Müller. Although the SPD won the most seats in Berlin’s regional elections on Sunday and remains the strongest party in the German capital’s state assembly, it will have to find a new coalition partner as the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) finished with 17.6 percent, a drop of 5.7 percent and its worst performance in the capital since German reunification, as exit polls showed. Chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU finished second with 17.5 percent and the Left Party came in third with 15.7 percent of the vote, marking a 4 percent gain from the 2011. The populist Alternative for Germany party has won 14.1 percent of the vote and enters its 10th regional assembly. ¦

 Merkel Accepts Partial Blame for Berlin Defeat In her first news conference after her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) recorded its worstever showing in a Berlin election, Chancellor Angela Merkel took partial responsibility for that defeat while again blaming opposition to her refugee policies on communication shortcomings. “I’m the party chairwoman, and I’m not going to duck responsibility,” Merkel told reporters. Merkel admitted that some Germans may have objected to her declaration “We’ll get it done” when faced with hundreds of thousands of refugees and said it wasn’t meant to imply that it would be easy to deal with the influx. She also said Germany lacked sufficient practice integrating immigrants. “It can’t be done quickly, among other things because we didn’t do everything correctly in past years,” Merkel said. “We weren’t exactly world champions in integration, and we waited too long before we addressed the refugee issue. We have to get better - I do as well.” ¦

 The Dark Side of German Reunification COLOGNE POLICE: Detained refugee from Syria planned bomb attack A teenaged Syrian refugee has been arrested in Germany on suspicion of links to the self-styled “Islamic State” group. Authorities described the young man as a “serious threat” who had been planning a bomb attack.

W

e have achieved a lot in eastern Germany in the last 26 years,” said Iris Gleicke, the government’s commissioner for eastern German affairs, on September 21 in Berlin as the government presented its annual report on the state of German unification. Gleicke herself is from Thuringia which is in eastern Germany. Until 1990, her home was part of the German Democratic Republic. It might seem strange that 26 years after reunification, people in Germany still talk of the “new federal states.” But that’s not a big issue for Gleicke.

She’s much more concerned about the sociopolitical developments east of the Elbe River, specifically, the noticeable rise in xenophobia. The number of violent right-wing extremist acts has increased “dramatically” in relation to the population in the East. Right-wing extremism, xenophobia and intolerance are a “very serious” threat to the eastern states’ economic development, said Gleicke. The increase in violent incidents is more than just a “simple alarm signal” when they’re also carried out by mainstream members of society, or when such people silently stand by, she said. Anti-immigrant hatred in eastern Germany has attracted negative headlines around the world. Gleicke said that decisive action on the part of politicians and civil leaders is needed “to secure social peace in eastern Germany.” At the same time, she said that “the large majority of eastern Germans are not xenophobic or right-wing extremists.” However, she wished that this majority would make their views known “more loudly and clearly,” adding that it was up to the people of eastern Germany to protect their cities and villages, or relinquish them to the xenophobic minority. According to a report by Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, there was an average of 10.5 extremist attacks for every one million people in the western states. Eastern states like Mecklenburg-West Pomerania showed 58.7 attacks for every one million people, followed by 51.9 in Brandenburg and 49.6 in Saxony. According to the official statistics of the German police, racist motivated criminal acts in Germany have risen by 120 percent compared to the first half of 2015. ¦ Source: Deutsche Welle / www.dw.com More in-depth articles in German and English on www.dw.com

n American Brexit U.S. Talent Migrating Toward Germany

W

hile the top flights in England, Spain, and Italy are not bending over backward to encourage foreign players to join their leagues, Germany’s Bundesliga retains an open-door policy, and American prospects have responded. Only three of the players on Jürgen Klinsmann’s 23-man roster for the Copa America Centenario plied their trade in the English Premier League: Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Brad Guzan (AsBobby Wood ton Villa) and Deandre Yedlin (Tottenham Hotspur). Why has the number of Americans playing in the EPL dropped so precipitously? Since the turn of the century, the United States men’s national team has included a sizable minority from the EPL. The U.S. roster for the 2002 World Cup included six players from England: In 2010, that number rose to eight. By the time of the 2014 World Cup, however, that number had dropped to four. Two years have elapsed since the 2014 World Cup, and the Copa America roster featured just three EPL players. A number of factors contribute to the departure of U.S. players from the ranks of English soccer. The first is the rise of wages in MLS. The second is the increasingly stringent rules for the acquisition of foreign players in England. Another reason why so few Americans are joining the EPL is the influx of money the EPL has enjoyed due to skyrocketing television revenue. The money that EPL teams now receive dwarfs that of every other league, which means that EPL teams can afford to buy the very best talent that the world has to offer What is the recourse for young U.S. players interested in playing abroad but not of the caliber to command tens of millions of pounds in transfer fees? What league offers a high-level of play but looser restrictions and more opportunities for young foreign players? Probably not La Liga. In Spain, of the 25 players a team registers, it can have no more than three non-European Union players in its ranks. In Italy it’s only two non-EU players. The Bundesliga has no policy against non-EU players transferring to the ranks of German soccer. Though the Bundesliga requires teams to register eight homegrown players (at least four of which must be from the team’s academy), there is no upper limit on the number of players a German team can register each season. Bobby Wood is a case in point of how ambitious players can find an avenue for advancement within the ranks of European soccer. In the past five years,Wood has climbed from the fourth tier of German soccer at 1860 Munich II to the Bundesliga, having recently signed for Hamburger SV after a season at Union Berlin in the 2.Bundesliga that saw him score 17 goals in 31 matches. If a player is hungry enough, good enough, and willing to start in a lower division and work his way up, there is opportunity in Germany for the taking. It is true that Klinsmann played a key role in nurturing Wood’s career. And so long as the Teutonic One is helming the U.S. national team, young American players should exploit Klinsmann’s knowledge of and connections with German clubs to the hilt. In fact, this transition may already be underway. There are at least 28 American soccer players among the ranks of German soccer: It is also true that Klinsmann’s dual-national recruiting efforts have expanded the base of players in Germany now playing for the United States—the progeny of servicemen stationed at U.S. military bases in Germany have brought forth more than a few U.S. national teamers. Provided the player is a genuine talent, German clubs looking to make gains on the EPL and find traction in the lucrative North American market will benefit financially from opening their gates to foreign talent. And for those enterprising youths who thirst to find soccer glory on foreign shores? Hey, consider brushing up on your German. ¦

UND JETZT KOMMT “OLLI”! Von Jenny Peters

AUFREGENDE DESIGNS UND NEUE TECHNOLOGIEN STEHEN IM FOKUS DER L.A. AUTO SHOW 2016 Wenn die Los Angeles Auto Show vom 18. – 27.

AND HERE COMES “OLLI!” NEW CAR STYLES AND TECHNOLOGIES HIGHLIGHT THE L.A. AUTO SHOW By Jenny Peters

When the Los Angeles Auto Show rolls into the L.A. Convention Center from November 18-27, 2016, more than 50 new vehicles will be revealed to the car-loving public, including a 3-D printed supercar and a self-driving electric microbus. And while most of us will not be seriously considering buying a Divergent Blade 3-D printed supercar in 2017, there will be plenty of interesting automobiles to consider, including 20 global vehicle debuts and numerous concept cars. Local Motors will show off Olli, the first self-driving cognitive vehicle, which is a 12-seater shuttle bus that uses the cloud-based cognitive computing capability of IBM Watson Internet of Things to analyze and learn from high volumes of transportation data.

G

etting a first glimpse of the latest technology is always an exciting part of the Auto Show, especially for fans of German engineering. Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, BMW and Porsche, who are all expected to debut new models and reveal some exciting redesigns as well. Porsche promises five debuts at the show, building on their October Paris Motor Show unveiling of the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid with standard all-wheel drive and an electric range of up to 31 miles (50 km). This new Porsche plug-in hybrid always starts in electric mode and continues as a zero-emission vehicle with a maximum all-electric range of 31 miles and a maximum speed on battery power of 86 mph. And yet, this Panamera is still a sports car among luxury sedans: the all-wheel drive four-

door Porsche achieves a top track speed of 172 mph and delivers a total system torque of 516 pound-feet without hesitation. This hybrid sports sedan zooms from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds! The new 2018 Panamera 4 E-Hybrid is expected to arrive at Porsche dealers in North America by Summer 2017; pricing has not yet been announced. Also just announced is the new Performance Package for the Macan Turbo, adding more power, bigger brakes and a sportier suspension calibration to what the brand calls the “sports car of the compact SUV segment.” In other Porsche news, word in the industry is that the luxury brand will announce its first station wagon in 2017, based partly on the

Sport Turismo design concept shown in 2012 at the Paris Motor Show. And also reportedly in the works is an all-electric sports car, coming on the market by 2020. That green-focused, environmentally friendly all-electric trend is huge at the coming L.A. Auto Show, with numerous car companies getting into the business that Tesla has been dominating so far. General Motors will show off their 2017 Bolt EV, the first all-electric mass-market car, which gets 238 miles per charge and retails for about $30,000. And, for the eleventh consecutive year, the Green Car of the Year prize given by Green Car Journal will be awarded during the show honoring environmental leadership in the automotive field. ¦

She calls herself “The Balloon Chick” and still fills concert halls around the world like in the 1980s when she was at the height of her popularity – after “99 Luftballons” (“99 Red Balloons”) had catapulted her onto the charts in 1983 and into the awareness of the world. This song, set against the backdrop of Cold War tensions, struck a nerve so deep that it was the first German-language song to enter the U.S. music charts since Marlene Dietrich had hit them decades before. There was something about that song and about the singer, NENA, that made it happen. And although she’s toured the world for many years, somehow America has always escaped the popular German star. NENA has never done a concert tour in the U.S.

016 is the year that Gabriele Susanne Kerner (NENA’s birth name) wants to change that. With 16 albums under her belt (plus one more, if you count her very first band,The Stripes) and a new single “Genau jetzt” (“Exactly Now”), she’ll finally meet her American fans for the first time on a mini tour that includes San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. So much has happened in the meantime. The iconic singer who looks 35 and is still rocking the stage actually turned 56 this year. She has four children, has been in a relationship with her partner Philip Palm for almost 20 years and is already a grandmother. The coolest grandma that Germany has to offer, some would say.

And as NENA tours the U.S., she’s bringing her family along, for music is the whole clan’s passion. Her twins, Larissa and Sakia Manuel, have been her background singers for a while and will join her on stage in the U.S. and her partner Philip accompanies the tour. Oldschool, the name of her most recent album, seems to hint to back to traditional values, back to the family. However, anyone that thinks NENA’s musical style has become all stuffy and boring will be in for a surprise. Her musical oeuvre has grown to encompass all sorts of genres – rock, punk, new wave, ballads, pop and electronica. That latest album and its accompanying live recording, “Live at SO36,” reflects on her adventurous past and looks towards the future. And although NENA hasn’t had another chart topper outside of Europe, this might all change now. If the video of “Genau jetzt” is any indicaFALL 2016

tion, she may once again have hit upon Germany’s unique role in a pivotal moment in history. In addition to featuring both the singer’s 74-yearold mother Ursula and her 24-year-old daughter Larissa, “Genau jetzt” features a multi-ethnic and LGBT-spectrum cast, all looking imploringly into the camera accompanied by lush, ethereal instrumentals, courtesy of famous rapper Samy Deluxe. In an interview published on Nena.de in August 2016, she revealssome personal details about her career and coming to the U.S.:

NENAINTERVIEW Everybody is wondering: Why now after 35 years?

The Cold War and the Berlin Wall were backdrops for this song. The answer is pretty simple. Because now’s the right time. It is always now! You just have to What was it like living during those times? pick the right one. The right now . . . for me at least . . . it’s perfect timing.

How do you feel about going to the U.S.A. now? I’m really happy about it. All of it’s a great, big adventure – a really cool step into the unknown. I’m really excited about what I’m going to experience with you all.

You have been to the U.S. before though? Yeah, back in the 1980s we did a little promo-tour in L.A. and in New York. And in L.A. we met legendary KROQ DJ Rodney Bingenheimer. And that was a real pleasure . . . because it was all his fault! [Laughs] I’m still very, very grateful for that!

What exactly do you mean, “It was Rodney’s fault?” He caused our breakthrough in the U.S. Back then, Christiane F. brought a suitcase of her music on the promotional tour of the “Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo” film. Rodney Bingenheimer picked our record out of it and played “Luftballons.” It was nuts. That was indescribable.

How did a song like this even come about?

Well, that’s a big one! Germany was divided before I was even born, so at first for me, it was just the way things were, you know? Then I moved to West Berlin in 1982 and it was much more in your face. It was really crazy being there in our little walled-in island in the “red sea” – there were so many young and crazy artists and musicians there doing their own thing, including me. And [being constantly confronted with the Wall] inspired artists to express themselves about freedom in so many different ways.

Did you ever take this song to the GDR? We were invited to play in the GDR, but we turned the invitation down because only people in the FDJ (Free German Youth) were allowed to see us. We had a lot of fans and just couldn’t accept that those non-members of the FDJ were forbidden to come to our concert. But when we later [after the wall came down] played in the former East, it was totally a freeing feeling. It was heavy and freeing. All the symbolism with the whole fall of the wall for me was that this should always remind us and serve as a warning to future generations that we’re on this planet not to be separated but to be connected.

That’s such crazy story: It was 1982 and the Rolling Stones were touring their album “Tattoo You” in Berlin. Mick Jagger released thousands of balloons at the end of the concert. They were all picked up by the wind and carried in the direction of East Berlin – over the Berlin Wall. I’ll never forget that image. That was the moment when my friend and guitarist Carlo Karges wrote the first lines of the song “99 Luftballons.” He completed the lyrics the same day and eventually it catapulted us into a different dimension.

In Germany, people see you as a role model. Who were your role models?

Why do you think this song remains such a hit to this day?

What I would say is that whenever I meet American people, they’re really open for music. They are very respectful of the fact that you do music. That’s different from my country. The big difference between Americans and Germans is that we say “Prost!” and you say “Cheers!”

For me it’s always been a song about misunderstandings – something that can trigger wars. This can happen on the smallest level, down to even the family where sometimes a balloon can unleash a war. People relate to that. And here, you can dance it out. What’s better than dancing out a misunderstanding?

Oh, there were lots of cool women when I was starting out! But off the top of my head, I’ve got to name Debbie Harry, Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders and Patti Smith. These were three women that were – and still are – tough, cool, didn’t take shit, had a real sense of style and made rock ’n roll on their terms.

Would you say there’s a difference between Germans and Americans?

For the U.S. tour, do you have any expectations of people there?

I’m very humble about playing in America. It’s going to be different and it’s going to be new.

n VOLKSWAGEN MOVES AWAY FROM DIESEL IN AMERICA AFTER A SCANDALPLAGUED YEAR By Jenny Peters

I

t has been a tough year for the Volkswagen Group in America, ever since the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) revealed in September 2015 that the huge German automobile manufacturer had used a “defeat device” on its diesel engines that hid the emissions from those engines. VW soon admitted that it cheated on U.S. emissions tests, with the truth coming out that approximately 11 million cars worldwide were fitted with the device. Models included Volkswagen’s Beetle, Golf, Jetta and Passat, as well as the VW-manufactured Audi A3. The resulting scandal caused VW to recall millions of diesel automobiles, including 500,000 in America and 2.4 million in Germany, as well as the resignation of CEO Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, who admitted to being “shocked by the events” in his statement at the time. Today,VW has agreed to pay around $15 billion in the U.S. to fix the diesel models it sold with the defeat device, which includes vehicle buybacks and the establishment of a $2.7 billion environmental remediation fund and investment of $2 billion more in initiatives to promote the use of zero-emissions vehicles in the United States. Volkswagen has discontinued sales of diesel engines in the U.S. for the moment as well. This all explains why Volkswagen plans to announce a number of all-electric cars coming in their pipeline at the October 2016 Paris Motor Show. Most likely not coming to market until the 2025 model year, the automobiles expected include a car the size of a Golf, as well as a compact SUV and a version of the BUDD-e van, which consumers saw as a concept vehicle at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in January 2016. U.S. owners of diesel VWs can track information on Volkswagen’s actions to “make things right” at www.vwdieselinfo.com. ¦

Do It.

ith the goal of inspiring teens to pursue a career path in manufacturing, STIHL Inc., a leader in advanced manufacturing, recently hosted its fifth STIHL Manufacturing Techno-logy Summer Camp at its U.S. headquarters in Virginia Beach, VA. The free camp, developed in partnership with Dream It. Do It. Virginia., promotes careers in modern manufacturing by giving high school students hands-on experience in technology-based projects. This year during the four-day camp, 35 students were tasked with using STIHL components to build “Escape Bots,” which are obstacle-avoiding robots equipped with infrared sensors. They worked in teams to develop technical, production planning and budgeting skills to find the most efficient way to build their products.Activities included everything from time studies and soldering circuit boards to marketing products for sale. “The students demonstrated a passion for learning,” said Stephen Ballenger,VP of operations at STIHL Inc. “As manufacturing becomes more and more technology focused, we are pleased to help grow their interest.” On the final day, five teams competed to determine the best process to manufacture and assemble their robots. Each member of the winning team received a scholarship of $1,000 from the Virginia Industry Foundation.

THINK BEYOND COLLEGE By Petra Schürmann

STIHL’S SUMMER CAMP GIVES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS VALUABLE INSIGHTS INTO PROMISING CAREER PATHS The summer camp ties into STIHL’s more than 25-year old commitment to offering high school students an alternative to pursuing a college education. With tuitions rising, more and more families find it hard to send their children to college. On the other hand, in most cases a college degree is considered the general entry ticket to a decent professional career. In the late 1970s, STIHL Inc., short of workers who could build and service the machines that make its outdoor power tools, decided to implement an intensive 4-year apprentice program modeled after the successful dual concept of practical inhouse training and theoretical in-school lessons at its German mother company. Eventually, STIHL Inc. established its apprenticeship program in the U.S. in 1984. German World subscriber Walter Weber, a die & tool maker apprentice himself in 1959 at STIHL in Germany, was one of the STIHL employees in Virginia who helped shape the apprenticeship program at STIHL’s U.S. headquarters. Weber, who got his diploma as REFA Techniker and Industrial Engineering, would be in charge of the 8-week initial training, also dubbed “Walter’s boot camp,” where the new apprentices were introduced to the basics of the trade.“The students were very appreciative for what they learnt,” said Weber in a phone interview. “While universities usually pursue a diverse, broad approach, the specialized, technical skills needed in industry can be better adopted in

practice.” Unfortunately, the idea of apprenticeships was not very popular in the U.S. in those days. Often even high school guidance counselors were not aware of the alternative track their students could choose.(could delete the two sentences after the quote in my opinion) In the meantime, STIHL’s apprenticeship program is not only Virginia Commonwealth certified, but it is also the first program in Virginia to receive international recognition through the German Chamber of Commerce IHK designation. The apprentices receive training in a variety of skilled work such as tool & die manufacturing, CNC machinists, mechatronics and polymer molding. The four-year program provides handson practical skills, associate’s and bachelor’s degrees for many of the apprentices. The TCC Mechatronics courses are aligned with the Advanced Technology Center’s (ATC) Engineering Technology program and to the TCC’s Associate Degree Applied in Science. Therefore, students will have more than one year of study complete prior to high school graduation. ¦

Damals nannte man es “Zuckerzeug” - also Süßigkeiten.

Traditionen Traditionen|

TRADITIONS TRADITIONS

THE KINDERCONE WHY GERMANS GIVE THEIR KIDS PAPER CONES ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL Starting elementary school is a big deal in Germany. It’s a rite of passage almost like graduation or a wedding. The most important part of every German child’s first day of school is the “Schultüte,” or “school cone.” Apparently the thought of attending school every day for the next 12-13 years has to be “sweetened” with candy and presents - a tradition that dates back to the late 18th century. Parents fill the cones, either homemade or purchased, with treats, school supplies and small gifts. The first day of first-grade is a turning point in the life of every German child - and family. Elementary schools in Germany begin for most children when they turn six years old and start with first grade, not with kindergarten or pre-K, so there’s a clean break between daycare and the 10 or 12 years of education in school that follow.

Young boy in a sailor suit. Germany, 1897.

In this issue’s “Test Your German” quiz, you’ll learn about rituals that are associated with starting elementary school. By far the most important is the so-called “Schultüte,” literally: “school cone.” Folklore expert Christiane Cantauw told the German TV station Deutsche Welle in an interview why the cone tradition began. DW: Is the thought of starting school so foreboding for Germans that they have to console themselves with gifts like the Schultüte - a paper cone full of sweets and presents? Christiane Cantauw: That's a good question, but it's rather about making clear that a child's status is changing. This transition is associated with many changes for the child and for the family and that's what people want to emphasize with the ritual. DW: Can you explain when the school cone tradition began and why? CC: The first written references date back to the late 18th century. At that time, there were no pre-made cones. Instead, people used the paper cones that were used in shops to wrap up sweets. The early references come from what is now central Germany in the regions of Thuringia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and perhaps also Rhineland-Palatinate. The cone itself is not a tradition, it's an element used in a tradition and it's also simply packaging. It's sometimes also presented to young adults starting vocational school as well. This shows that it's seen as a symbol for a new beginning. DW: What was put in the early school cones?

CC: Back then, usually the same things that are put in the cones today. Then it was called "Zuckerzeug" - literally "sugar stuff," or basically candy. Today, you'll find sweets, things to play with and school supplies. The school cone is really just a container, which means you can't look inside of it. That means that if I'm financially not in a position to fill up the cone with presents, I can fill it out with extras. So people threw in potatoes or paper when times were economically tough. In one instance, I read that a wooden shoe was put in the bottom of the cone. But we can see that this symbol for beginning school was so important that no one wanted to do without it. Economically speaking, Germany is doing relatively well right now. How has the school cone tradition changed over the past few years? As with many things, it's been exaggerated. People spend an incredible amount of money on it. For the cone alone, they spend between 3 and 40 euros ($3.40-45.30), for the content up to 100 euros ($110). DW: There are currently many refugee children in Germany who are also starting first grade. If the parents are unfamiliar with the tradition, the children stick out in their class. How are people dealing with that?

CC: I saw that in Leipzig money was being collected so that all the children could receive school cones. The project is called Aktion Zuckertüte and is sponsored by the Leipzig Children's Foundation. It's for all residents in Leipzig who cannot afford the tradition, not just for refugees. Christiane Cantauw is the director of the Folkloristic Commission in Münster, Westphalia.

Sport Chalet Closed all 47 Stores The retail chain founded by German immigrant Norbert Olberz in 1959 no longer exists

Norbert Olberz

It is a true pioneer story with a very humble beginning. On the first day of April in 1959, Norbert Olberz wrote a $2,500 check to Milo Svoboda, the original owner of Sport Chalet in La Cañada that had only been open for four months, according to the Valley Sun interview with Olberz in 2002. The transaction took place just over a month after Norbert and Irene Olberz had exchanged wedding vows in Oregon, following a whirlwind courtship between the two German immigrants. Their honeymoon had consisted of visiting places in Idaho and along the West Coast in search of the perfect fit. “At the same time, Irene got a job at the local Bank of America,” Norbert Olberz, who passed away in 2011, told GW in 2004. “We went and bought a couple of rollaway beds and moved into the back of the store, which was the ski repair shop.” A former baker, Olberz said he learned the sporting goods business by listening to customers,

German World had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Biever Mondavi in 2005, prompting us to feature her and her daughter Annie on one of the German World covers in 2005. Margrit and Robert Mondavi at their winery.

Born in Appenzell, Switzerland on August 2,1925, Margrit Kellenberger grew up overlooking the Lake Maggiore in the Swiss canton Ticino. She moved to the U.S. with her first husband, Capt. Philip Biever, shortly after WWII. Residing first in North Dakota, the Bievers moved to Napa Valley, California in 1960. Margrit Biever joined Robert Mondavi Winery in 1967 as Public Relations Director. She fell in love with Robert G. Mondavi, one of the most prominent wine growers in California at that time, and later married him in 1980. The Mondavis were among pioneering Napa Valley producers who helped turn the agricultural area northeast of San Francisco into a world-renowned wine-growing region. Margrit Biever Mondavi eventually became the winery’s vice president of cultural affairs and had the dream of combining wine with fine art, music, and food.

Biever Mondavi founded the winery’s Summer Music Festival in 1969 as a benefit for the local symphony. Over the years, the music festival has drawn performers such as Ella Fitzgerald and Tony Bennett. Margrit Biever Mondavi also introduced cooking classes that evolved into a “Great Chefs” series at the winery.“Like painting and music, wine and food speak to the heart,” she said, according to the winery statement. “By honoring the world of the senses, of memory and emotions, the rites of the table express our humanity.” In 1997, Margrit and her husband issued a challenge grant of $2.2 million to spur the reconstruction of the Napa Valley Opera House in Napa. In 2001, Margrit and Robert also made a substantial personal gift to the University of California at Davis to establish the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science and to launch the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, which opened in October 2002. Additionally the couple continued to support the Oxbow School, an institution that gives grants to art students in their junior year of high school. Together with her daughter Annie Roberts, who is a professional chef, Biever Mondavi published the cookbook Annie and Margrit: Recipes and Stories from the Robert Mondavi Kitchen in 2003, which won many accolades in the gourmet scene. Margrit Biever Mondavi was certainly a veritable grand dame of wine and culture and

skiers, friends and suppliers. “They taught me all about the business,” he said. When the 1960 Olympics in Squaw Valley brought more skiing enthusiasts into the local shop, the couple realized there was a need for more space. That’s when they purchased a block of five stores from their landlord. In 1974, Olberz purchased another building in La Cañada and one in Huntington Beach in 1981. The chain began to grow. In 1992, the company went public to help fund expansion. Nine years later, the chain’s first out-of-state store in Nevada opened. In late 2005, Sport Chalet expanded into Arizona. Sport Chalet struggled in its final decade. In 2014 it was sold for $17 million to Vestis Retail Group, which absorbed $50 million in debts and announced the closing of all 47 Sport Chalet stores. It’s unclear what’s become of the motivational signs that once hung near Norbert Olberz’ desk: “The greatest risk is not taking one” and “Quit talking about a problem that can’t be fixed by talking.” Fortunately, he did not live to see his hand-made imperium go down. It still remains a remarkable journey of a simple German baker who came to California and headed for almost two decades one of the leading sports goods chains on the West Coast. It’s does not have to be always about beer ... Es muss nicht immer Bier sein ... Discover the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Vintage Reserve 1952 by Asbach

A

sbach first presented the limited special edition “Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Vintage Reserve 1952” to mark its 120th anniversary in 2012.This selected rarity pays homage to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, recalling a visit by the poet to Asbach’s home town on August 15, 1814. Goethe stopped in Rüdesheim after “hours of pleasure-riding” in a horse-drawn carriage along the romantic Rhine. The unique distillate Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Vintage Reserve 1952 was created at the Asbach distillery in Rüdesheim: it is based on a

select white wine of 1951 vintage which master distiller Oswald Rösel distilled in July 1952 using the traditional craft process of double distillation in copper stills. The distillate was left to age for six decades - initially in small casks made of fine Limousin oak. It then developed its incomparable bouquet in larger casks made of German oak in the Asbach Treasure Trove. The result: Spicy, aromatic notes blend with mature, wine-like tones as well as with the fine oak. With an alcohol content of 41.8 % vol. the unique distillate is to be enjoyed responsibly.

The limited edition runs to just 900 exclusive, stylishly crafted carafes (1.0 litres each). Each carafe features a unique bottle and cask number as well as an individual certificate of authenti-city. It is offered in a special box made of wood from the Bavarian Forest. Retail price: $3,000. 59 th Steuben Parade

Grand Marshals Ambassador Peter Wittig and Olympic Champion Katarina Witt made the Steuben Parade Weekend “An Affair to Remember” Individuals and groups from all over the U.S. and 13 groups from Germany traveled to Manhattan’s 5th Avenue for the 59th Annual Steuben Parade on September 17.

T 1

he parade has its origins in post-World War II as a way to rehabilitate the image of Americans with German heritage in the U.S. The parade was named after Prussian Revolutionary War general Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, who fought for the American colonies and is credited with being indispensable for the achievement of American independence.

Since its inception 59 years ago, the parade has been a celebration of the diversity of German culture.

2

This year, North-Rhine Westphalia was the German state that sent most groups (eight of thirteen) to New York. Among them were the Stattgarde Colonia Ahoj e.V. who attended the parade for the first time and enjoyed themselves tremendously (5, with Uli from Lederhosen Wurst & Bierhaus). More than 10 floats highlighted the parade, among them “Germany meets the U.S.”, by the German Embassy, the “Filmland Deutschland”-float (2) presented by the Consulate General of Germany, and the float “Generals von Steuben and Washington at Valley Forge” sponsored by the Steuben Society of America. Lufthansa made a return as the parade’s sponsor and created an eye-catcher with a model of one of their planes floating over Fifth Avenue (11). For most parade spectators it was a special treat to meet Olympic ice-skating champion Katarina Witt (9) in person. Witt, who had lived in New York for many years producing some of her iconic ice dancing shows, was very touched by the kindness of the people (3).Witt, who still looks amazing, told German World (6):“It still feels a bit like home. After all, I spent many years here and had a great time.“

3

4

Another wonderful surprise this year was the visit of one of the direct descendants of General von Steuben, Baron Henning von Steuben (10, l.), who resides in Lueneburg. Congratulations to Parade Chairman Robert Radske (10) and his team. Supported by his wife Anita, (10) his daughter Nicole, and dedicated committee members such as Herb Seef (Grand Stand and Oktoberfest) and Lenny Coyne (PR, Pub Crawl, & Press), Radske did an outstanding job again. “Chapeau” as well to Lenny Coyne (7) who managed to get the parade noticed by various TV shows prior to the parade and who was a fantastic Emcee at the Maßkrugstemmen contest. Each year, the Steuben Weekend is so professionally handled that it is hard to believe that it is run on a volunteer basis only.

5

6

5,000 guests celebrated by indulging in authentic German beer such as Erdinger as well as spirits and wines by Niche Imports. The band Spitze got the crowd moving until the very end of the festival.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer Oratorio Performance by Der Kleine Chor Burgdorf “No Ordinary Men” is the title of Elisabeth Sifton and Fritz Stern’s book on Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Hans von Dohnanyi, the resisters against Hitler in Church and State killed by the Nazi regime only shortly before its collapse in 1945. In her review of the book in the Library Journal, Barbara Hoffert comments: “A story that needs to be heard” – a story that can be heard in an oratorio on Dietrich Bonhoeffer´s life, theology and ethics performed by speaker, choir, and instrumentalists. The oratorio was composed by the Matthias Nagel, a German musician, and the libretto was written by Dieter Stork based on Bonhoeffer´s works. This exhibition aims to contribute to the Goethe-Institut’s ongoing conversation about walls, borders and people. Until recently, the idea of separating territories and peoples via manmade borders seemed an outdated relic from the past. Recent political developments, however, including the creation of new barriers at the European Union’s borders, have made such barriers a topic of heated debate once again. Germany’s own past in this regard serves as inspiration for two German artists, Daniel Schwarz, resident in L.A., and Stefan Falke, making his home in New York, who take a close look at the cultural and social commonalities on the two sides of the U.S.-Mexican border. – Don’t miss the related show by the Mexican Cultural Institute entitled Delimitations

Amerikaner fordern deutsche Bierbrauer heraus ERSTE AMERIKANISCH BRAUEREI IN BERLIN ERÖFFNET

A

US Dollar.

Invasion of Germany’s Holy Grail AMERICAN CRAFT BEER COMES TO BERLIN

O

f all things to launch onto an unsuspecting public in Germany, Greg Koch picked American beer. A 51-year-old Californian with an impressive beard, Koch has been experimenting with coffee and chocolate flavorings in his hometown San Diego. Koch spent the last four years looking at 130 different locations in nine countries, ranging from Iceland to Italy. But he opted for Berlin in the end, where his company “Stone Brewing” is setting up its own brewery. It’s the first ever European subsidiary of a US craft brewer. Berlin has established a reputation as Germany’s entrepreneurs’ capital – also dubbed “Silicon Alley” in the start-up scene. It’s seen the highest number of start-ups in the country, ahead of Hamburg, since 2011, according to data from the Bonn Institute for the Study of Small and Mid-size Firms (IfM). Berlin is well-suited to becoming a leading startup metropolis in Europe. It’s already Europe’s number two investment destination after London, according to consultants EY.Additionally, the cost of living and the rent are relatively low compared to other European cities and it is centrally located. The fact that English is now the lingua franca also works in the German capital’s favor. “The challenge with the German beer market is there’s not much choice. It’s full of industrial Pils,” Koch said, adding that many people don’t want to try his beer because it’s American. Germans have a rather low opinion of industrially pro-

duced American beer, and - so far - an underdeveloped awareness of the very different, far more flavorful beers made by American craft brewers - cool, bold, and experimental. The Berliner Kurier newspaper even cast Koch as an American beer “savior” come to shake up a boring German beer scene. Craft beer took off in the U.S. about 20 years ago, and Koch was one of its pioneers. A selfconfessed beer geek, Koch co-founded the California-based Stone Brewing company in the late ‘90s with his partner, Steve Wagner.” It’s now the 10th largest craft brewery in the U.S., with annual sales of over $130 million. If Americans loved these beers, Koch thought, so would Germans. And to prove it, he spent $25 million last year on an old Berlin gasworks, which he’s making into a brewery. Koch’s grand vision for this space also includes gardens and an 800-seat restaurant, based on Stone’s runaway success operation in San Diego. To get there, Koch is going up against the traditional German brewing industry, which in 2013 made almost 2.5 billion gallons of beer - sold widely and cheaply. So he knows there will be skeptics. On the other hand, trendy bars like Vagabund in Berlin specialize in craft beer, and they’re drawing young drinkers looking for premium brews while the government’s own figures show sales of

industrial beers have trended downward for a decade. Craft brewers get a wide variety of beers by adding all kinds of exotic ingredients: cinnamon, nutmeg, hacia pepper and chocolate. That’s sacrilege to some big industrial brewers who stick to the 500-year old German Purity Law ruling that anything labeled “beer” in Germany has to be only hops, malt, yeast and water. Nevertheless, Germany has seen a 30 percent increase in craft brewing in the last decade. But no matter how you look at it, Greg Koch is taking a multi-million-dollar gamble. This is about much more than business. “Fortunately, I am blessed with that unrealistically entrepreneurial gene,” said Koch in an interview with CBS.“I see a vision for something and I believe that other people will like this vision, too.” ¥ Source: DW.com / CBS.com

Oktoberfest Time – Pretzel Time The Art of the Right Twist

What characterizes the perfect Bavarian pretzel? “A light, fluffy middle in the inside and a cracked, mahogany-colored crust on the outside.” – Claudia Hillmeier, co-founder of Prop & Peller Pretzels

“IN BAVARIA, PRETZELS ARE THE HOLY GRAIL OF BAKED GOODS,” EXPLAINS BAVARIAN NATIVE CLAUDIA HILLMEIER, THE POWERHOUSE BEHIND BC INTERNATIONAL AND CO-FOUNDER OF PROP & PELLER PRETZELS. “BAVARIANS TAKE THEM AS SERIOUSLY AS THEIR

A

nd it was with the same seriousness that Claudia started her own pretzel impor-ting business, first under the label Bavarian Angel, later as BC International Trading, an import company located in Las Vegas, Nevada, that carries Prop & Peller Pretzels as one of their exclusive labels. Claudia Hillmeier’s passion for pretzels began when she was young. Growing up in the pretzel capital of the world, she understood the tradition and craftsmanship that results in a one-of-akind Bavarian pretzel. What she didn’t understand – as she traveled the world together with her father – was why she couldn’t find that same authentic taste anywhere outside of Bavaria.

BEER.” Fueled by her fondness for pretzels and the U.S., as well as her passion for flying, Claudia went on to launch Prop & Peller Pretzels and sought out the legendary Oswald Piller, the most renowned pretzel baker in all of Bavaria. The business all started very modestly about 10 years ago with one container, delivering Bavarian pretzels to Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas. After years of hard work, Claudia’s ultimate dream finally came true: nowadays her company has several cold-storage warehouses in the U.S.A. and containers filled with pretzels arriving weekly from Munich to Los Angeles and Miami. She also started pretzel production at plants in Miami and Atlanta in order to meet the ever-growing demand. In 2016, her company distributes millions of pretzels per year to distributors, restaurants, events and grocery chains, in 45 U.S. states. The company added other products, too, including strudels, pretzel sandwich rolls, pretzel bites and burger buns. Starting in late 2016, the

nationwide chain Sprouts will carry some of Prop & Peller pro-ducts under its own label. Claudia is very proud that all the products that her company offers are crafted from the highest-quality dough, made from the finest ingredients, while avoiding preservatives or any type of chemicals. Once the proprietary ingredients are mixed together, each pretzel is handcrafted and individually twisted, followed by a four-hour long, meticulous baking process that results in a one-of-a-kind authentic Bavarian pretzel. Prop & Peller pretzels now give Americans the chance to ditch the cardboard-consistency pretzels of their past and to discover the rich flavor and texture only found in an authentic Bavarian pretzel. Claudia’s recipe for success? “We are driven by passion, not just profit,” she says. “We truly find joy in what we do.” ¦

Here I Stand

LUTHER EXHIBITIONS USA 2016

For this very reason, Germany plans on bringing its Reformation celebrations to the States as well. The State Museum of Prehistory Halle (Saale), the Foundation Luther Memorials in SaxonyAnhalt, the German Historical Museum (Berlin), and the Foundation Castle Friedenstein Gotha will be putting on three major exhibitions in the USA under the umbrella title “Here I Stand”. The Foundation Luther Memorials in SaxonyAnhalt also supervises prominent Reformation museums in Southern LutherCountry, e.g., the Luther House in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, home to the world’s largest museum on Reformation history. The “Here I Stand” exhibitions will be hosted by three separate cities and focus on Martin Luther and the Reformation in different contexts. The exhibitions are being realized with the generous support of the Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany. The featured archeological artifacts, authentic relics, works of art, autographs, and prints come together to beautifully portray the work and life of Martin Luther as well as the Protestant Reformation and its far-reaching impact on history and culture. Special focus is placed on the towns and cities that played an important role in the Reformation, as well as on exclusive relics that reveal fascinating insights into Reformation history and the life of the “Great Reformer.” Visitors can also look forward to discovering some of LutherCountry’s greatest cultural treasures, which are also on display.

With the “Here I Stand” exhibitions, many original artifacts will be shown in the USA for the very first time. 36 44

In 2017, Germany will host an array of activities and exhibitions in honor of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, an event of worldwide historic significance. In the USA, the effects of the Reformation have played – and continue to play – an important role in the development of everyday Christian life. Time Magazine, for instance, reported a study that showed most people consider Martin Luther nailing his theses to the church door one of the most important moments in the history of humankind.

New York City October 7, 2016 - January 22, 2017 "Word and Image: Martin Luther's Reformation" As the title suggests, the origin and development of the Reformation is shown through “words” and “images” with the help of more than 80 unique exhibits, many of which are on loan from some of Germany’s top museums. The central focus from the exhibition is a letter of Martin Luther to the former German Emperor Karl V from April 28, 1521. In this letter, Luther justifies his refusal to renounce his theses and tries in vain to evoke the emperor’s understanding. This letter never reached its intended recipient and was purchased in an auction by John Pierpont Morgan, founder of the Morgan Library, in 1911. The exhibition will focus on events in Luther’s life that were particularly relevant to the beginning of the Reformation. Cranach was born in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, where guests can still visit a number of authentic locations with ties to Cranach. By explicating the iconography of Cranach’s paintings, this important exhibition deals with the heart and soul of the Reformation: Salvation through the grace of God alone.

Minneapolis October 30, 2016 - January 15, 2017 “Martin Luther: Art and the Reformation Manuscripts and Lucas Cranach masterpieces” The most extensive of the three “Here I Stand” exhibitions, “Martin Luther: Art and the Reformation” will be shown at the Minneapolis Institute of Art in the Lutheran heartland of the United States. This exhibition examines Luther’s life and influence from an artist’s perspective, featuring over 100 objects that have never before been displayed on American soil. Together, these exhibits paint a vivid picture of the life and work of Martin Luther and discuss the events of the Reformation within the cultural context of the 16th century. Numerous exhibits are on loan from the collections inside the Luther House, the world’s largest Reformation history museum. This unique opportunity was made possible due to the closing of the Luther House in preparation for 2017. This exhibition will be the first time these items are presented to a large audience outside of Germany. Location: The Minneapolis Institute of Art

The shows in New York, Minneapolis, and Atlanta complement each other by presenting different aspects of Martin Luther’s life and work and the permanent mark he made on the world. In addition to these traditional exhibitions, the “Here I Stand” project also includes a modern online component: #HereIstand allows institutions such as the Goethe-Institut or local congregations, schools, and universities to download a Luther exhibition and present it publicly on their own premises. #HereIstand will be available online at herei-stand.com as of October 2016, offering new possibilities with the help of downloadable multimedia data. The user can download images or even 3D scans of original exhibits which they can then print and present at their home institutions. A kick-off event will be held at the Goethe Center/German Cultural Center, Atlanta and Pitts Theology Library of Emory University in October 2016, where visitors will see the very first public demonstration of #HereIstand and the globally downloadable exhibition (both images and 3D-printable objects).

CRUISES – A POPULAR LUXURY WORLDWIDE But did you know that the birth of international cruising is to be found in Hamburg? “A sea journey is a lot of fun, a sea journey is beautiful,” goes a popular German folksong and that song is still sung now in the 21st century, especially since cruises across the globe have become increasingly popular as decades pass. Statistics show that more than 22 million people in the world took a cruise in 2015, which equals an increase of 68 percent during the last ten years. Almost one million people are employed in the cruise industry, an industry that achieved an overall revenue in 2014 of more than $120 billion USD*. Albert Ballin

By Petra Schürmann / Jenny Peters However, a fact that most people do not know is that this important part of the tourism industry can be traced back to a visionary from Hamburg during the 19th century: Albert Ballin. In 1890, at only 33, Ballin was the youngest director of the Hamburg-Amerikanischen PacketfahrtActiengesellschaft (HAPAG) when he proposed to the company’s management that they organize a cruise for the fall season.

Vintage postcard of HAPAG’s Augusta Victoria

At that time, HAPAG had just added a fast new steamer to its fleet, the Augusta Victoria, a luxuriously adorned ship with a length of 144 meters, which was traveling the route between North America and Hamburg. During winter, however, the floating palace was just berthed idly in the shipyard without making any money, since travelers avoided traveling by sea during that stormy and cold season. www.german-world.com FALLFALL 20162016 WWW.GERMAN-WORLD.COM

TRAVEL Reisen | Reisen TRAVEL This prompted Ballin to send the Augusta Victoria to a warmer and less stormy region, by offering a “pleasure cruise for leisure travelers” – as original documents state. Soon, in 1891, “an excursion towards the Mediterranean and the Orient” was launched, a two-month tour complete with land excursions around the 13 harbors where the Augusta Victoria dropped anchor. And so, the first modern-day cruise was born.

Now, more than 125 years later, the HAPAG spin-off known as Hapag-Lloyd Cruises leads the way when it comes to innovation and customer engagement. The company continues to find ways to improve and enhance its already world-class passenger experiences. In 2016, for example, a group of adventurous cruisers set out on Hapag-Lloyd’s flagship vessel, the EUROPA2, on a “Surprise Cruise.” All that the passengers on this ship that has 251 suites and holds 500 guests knew were where they would begin and end; everything in between was a surprise. The journey began on May 14 in Istanbul, Turkey, and then it was up to the guests to decide where to go before the ship docked in Piraeus. Christian van Zwamen, the captain of the EUROPA2, presented them with a list of potential routes and ports, pointing out which locations will be the sunniest over the next few days. And a lecturer was also on hand, to describe the highlights of the potential destinations to help with the choices. The guests then voted to determine their route across Turkey and Greece.

In Germany, however, MWST regulations allow non-German businesses to claim a refund. North American companies find 7 to 19 percent MWST charges added for lodging, conference fees, event-venue expenses, transportation and meals within Germany. But by following the proper procedures, companies do not need to absorb MWST fees when they do business in Germany. That fact should encourage international business ventures to consider the German EU member for their conferences and tradeshows.

Value Added Tax registration must occur before any business transactions take place, but sometimes that registration is not even required (for instance, registration is not required for a business conference or tradeshow when no fees are charged). MACHU PICCHU für Anfänger

By/Von Alexander Hast

Gratulation! ¥

The film is loosely based on “Montauk,” the novel written by Max Frisch in 1978, and stars Nina Hoss and Stellan Skarsgård. “Return to Montauk” centers on the European writer Max Zorn (Skarsgård), who comes to New York with his young wife for the release of his new novel. In that book, Max writes about the failure of love in this city 17 years ago. Almost by chance he meets his lover from that time, Rebecca (Hoss). They decide to spend another weekend together in Montauk to reignite their affair. This highly anticipated film will hit theaters next year. ¥

His action drama “Mechanic Resurrection” stars A-listers Jason Statham and Jessica Alba, and is the much-anticipated sequel to the 2010 film “The Mechanic.” Gansel, who came to fame in Germany with films like “Die Welle” and “Mädchen, Mädchen” was surprised and thrilled when he got the call from Hollywood, although working with big stars took some time getting used to, he admits. The casting of legendary actor Tommy Lee Jones was especially awkward, the director explains in a recent newspaper interview: “I was always a huge fan of his work and suddenly I was supposed to be his director. Do you understand how nervous I was?” Nervous or not, the film is completed and arrived in U.S. theaters on August 26. Congratulations! ¥

Christoph Waltz is busy, busy, busy!

BY KATJA LAU

Although Christoph Waltz has become a highly acclaimed Oscar-winning actor in the last few years, he’s not too big to do commer-cials, such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 spot that premiered during the Olympics in Rio. The clip is weird, strange and brilliant, all at the same time. Waltz explains just how busy Americans are, slightly mocking them in the process with his strong Austrian accent.Very funny indeed! No joke at all is the latest James Cameron project that was offered to Waltz: Along with Rosa Salazar (“Maze Runner”), the Austrian-born actor might star in the actionthriller “Alita – Battle Angel“ directed by Robert Rodiguez. For a change, Waltz would not be the villain of the movie but the good guy (Doctor Dyson Ido). The movie is supposed to come to the U.S. theaters in July 2018. ¥

Even though “Independence Day: Resurgence,” the 2016 sequel to the 1996 blockbuster “Independence Day” lacked behind the hit from 1996, it was successful enough for Twentieth Century Fox Film Studios to announce a third installment to be released in 2018. Emmerich will once again take the helm and it will be interesting to see which landmarks the globe-trashing director plans to destroy the next time around! ¥

Ø “Me and Kaminski” with Daniel Brühl to open film festival GERMAN CURRENTS in Los Angeles

Der preisgekrönte Regisseur Wolfgang Becker wird zur Eröffnung in L.A. erwartet

Award Winning Director Wolfgang Becker (Good Bye Lenin!) to attend opening night

Director Wolfgang Becker (“Good Bye Lenin!”) teamed up with Daniel Brühl once again to bring Daniel Kehlmann’s bestselling novel “Me and Kaminski” to the big screen. In the movie, which was released in Germany in September 2015, Brühl plays Sebastian Zöllner, a vain but unsuccessful cultural critic who plans to write a biography about an aged artist, Kaminski, who once caused quite a stir in the art world as a blind painter. Zöllner plans to become famous with his book, which he wants to publish straight after the artist’s death. Promising his subject that he is going to reunite with his early love, the writer takes the old guy, wonderfully played by Jesper Christensen, on a journey across Europe. Geraldine Chaplin also stars in the quirky comedy, scheduled to open the annual GERMAN CURRENTS film festival on October 20, 2016. ¥

016 has been a very special year for German World founder and publisher Petra Schürmann as it marks her 20th anniversary since coming to the U.S.To celebrate the occasion, she invited her close friends, staff members and business partners to a reception and the screening of “A Woman of the World” with Pola Negri, part of the Silent Salon event series at the Villa Aurora (1, 8) in Pacific Palisades in early August. Petra thanked Margit Kleinman (10), executive director of the Villa Aurora for the opportunity to gather her closest circle of her L.A. friends at this iconic landmark of German expat culture in L.A. “This is where it all began for me, “ Schürmann said in her welcoming address, “this is where I conducted my first celebrity interview.” She was referring to an assignment in April 1999 when Neue Presse publisher Norbert Schreiber asked her to interview visiting German actress Katja Riemann at the Villa Aurora. Petra Schürmann, who worked for Bertelsmann Services (today Arvato Services) at that time, had been thinking about a career in journa-lism for quite sometime. This first exclusive interview prompted her to pursue her dream and to take journalism classes at UCLA Extension. A year later, she developed the concept for German-World.com and a few years later, with the support of co-founder Alexander Hast, German World Magazine was launched. “You all have something in common,” Petra Schürmann continued in her address, “you might not all know each other personally but you all have been a decisive factor at some pivotal point in my life here in L.A. that helped me to overcome obstacles and move forward. For that I will be eternally grateful to you.” The attending guests included Consul General Hans Jörg Neumann, and former City Councilman Tom LaBonge (3), attorneys Bernard Wolfsdorf (6, r.) and Dennis Fredricks, Helen Höhne, board member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (2, r.), journalist Katja Lau (2,l.), LA-Berlin President Rosemarie Reisch (7, c.), Austrian-American Council President Veronika Reinelt, AirBerlin representative Sabine Engelbrecht (7, r.), Dr. Armin Brüderlin (4, l.) saxophonist Reinhold Schwarzwald (4, r.), Dr. Dale and Toni Brent, Edeltrudis Matzak, Doris Adlam, Alexandra Strebin (5, c., with actress Karola Raimond), and many more.

6

Elke Miller, founder of the Goethe International Charter School and president of Kigala, as well as Dr. Joseph Goodman (9, c.), German World’s first advertising client, were unfortunately not able to attend. Dr. Goodman has been a strong supporter of the German community since opening his dental practice in Beverly Hills more than 10 years ago. Recently, he has become highly sought after for his professional advice by several beauty queens and TV personalities like Piers Morgan.
