ermany is an excellent host. This year once again Germany will be a host to the world - for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Germany 2011™ from June 26th to July 17th. Following 2006, this event with the motto of “THE BEAUTIFUL SIDE OF 20ELEVEN” is a fantastic opportunity to further improve Germany’s image and distinguish ourselves as an outstanding country for events of all kinds. The first automobiles were developed in Germany – exactly

125 years ago. This anniversary is the central focus of the wide variety of events and activities surrounding the “Automobile Summer 2011”. German cars are world famous – names like Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and Volkswagen are symbols of the best quality and innovation the world over. But they also stand for tradition and inventiveness. And in just a few weeks, people from about 150 countries will be congregating again at IMEX in Frankfurt. The GCB is a strategic partner of IMEX and – besides the largest trade fair stand (F100) with nearly 200 German exhibitors – it will have many highlights to offer once again as part of the seminar program: For example, the author, blogger and strategy consultant Sascha Lobo will discuss the topic of “Social Media”, which is currently of great interest, as the key note speaker.

We are especially pleased about the great positive response to the new ’Women‘s Leadership Forum’ at IMEX in Frankfurt. Perhaps that reaction is a matter of course in a country with a new generation of young, dedicated, extremely well educated women who are interested in our industry. And of course, we are looking forward to IMEX America with eager anticipation: it will be held for the first time ever from October 11th to 13th, 2011, in Las Vegas. In this regard, the IMEX Group has been particularly gratified by the great interest indicated by many new and strong partners since the plans for the new exhibition in America were announced. This year, in addition to IMEX and the FIFA Worldcup, we have been and will be able to demonstrate Germany’s positive charisma and event know-how at

GCB German Convention Bureau e.V. launches Meeting Planners’ Guide

T

he GCB German Convention Bureau e.V. launched a 36 page guide aimed at helping meeting professionals across the globe. The guide, written by an industry professional, is packed full of useful information designed to get organisers thinking about how to improve every area of their event planning, implementation and delivery. The guide is available in both hard copy and PDF download from the GCB website www.germany-meetings. com. We would be pleased to send you the brochure free of charge: just send us a brief e-mail to info@gcb.de.

The brochure also deals with questions about running incentive schemes, and highlights issues such as risk management and health and safety, event marketing, and topics such as communicating to the different generations now in the workplace. The guide has been written by Richard John. He is a well-known consultant, trainer and writer on all aspects of the meetings and events industry. He commented: “It’s great when organisations like GCB demonstrate their commitment to the international events market by

Lufthansa, Star Alliance and SkyTeam offer all registered IMEX visitors reductions on international flights to Frankfurt. Frankfurt 2011 Another strong showing from the hotel sector, continued expansion of the hosted buyer programme and excellent exhibitor interest, including several new exhibitors, will combine to make this year’s IMEX in Frankfurt another must-attend event on May 24 -26. Exhibitor demand from across the world continues to be high. New exhibitors include Dragonfly Africa (DMC) and Oberoi Hotels with Costa Rica, the Lithuanian Tourism Association and Latvia all making a welcome return. Destinations that have increased their stand sizes for 2011 include: Thailand, Paris, Moscow, Hungary, the Netherlands and Switzerland. Further increases will be seen from many private sector companies including: Carat Tours, Turkey, Abercrombie & Kent, Allied International, World of DMCs and Team Andaluces. The Balearics, including Mallorca, will now exhibit on their own stand, independent of the main Spanish stand. New technology exhibitors will include Eventsforce and Showcare Event Management. A strong turnout from the large international as well as smaller hotel groups will also be evident. Hyatt Hotels make a welcome return whilst Accor, Arosa, Concorde, Corinthia, Mandarin Oriental and Steigenberger Hotels have all increased their stand sizes. With the launch of IMEX America having a positive effect on North American exhibitors eager to

share in the proven business results that IMEX delivers, the US area of the show floor continues to expand and includes destinations across the country including: Arizona, the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau, Las Vegas, The Venetian/ Palazzo, NYC and Company, the Washington DC Convention and Tourism Corporation, Greater Boston CVB and Texas Tourism. n Association Day strength The annual IMEX Association Day, which takes place at the Sheraton Frankfurt Airport Hotel & Conference Center the day before the show opens, is now firmly established as an unmissable education and networking event for up to 300 international and European association meeting buyers. The day’s education programme is co-ordinated by ICCA, with German language sessions organised by IMEX founding partners, the German Convention Bureau e.V. (GCB) and input from association management company, MCI. Concurrent seminar topics for 2011 include: “Lessons from cutting-edge medical congresses” and “The impact of mobile apps and social media on associations and their meetings”. German language sessions will cover “Turnaround management” and “Product development within associations.” The evening networking reception for 800 or more association day delegates plus recognised IMEX exhibitors and suppliers will take place at The Westin Grand.

Offering over 80 sessions, this year’s education programme at IMEX in Frankfurt will feature several brand new sessions and topics with

many taking place on the CIC (Convention Industry Council) sponsored Professional Development and Innovation Pavilion on the show floor. Anna Hellman, Executive Director of SportAccord Convention will talk about the enormous business scope provided by sporting federations around the globe. With 100 different sports holding well over 1,000 events internationally each year, she will guide her IMEX audience through the different bidding and funding arrangements they can expect to encounter when pitching for sportsrelated business. A new Women’s Leadership Forum will be also led by Liz Jackson, President of Jackson Consulting and Susan Sarfati, CEO of High Performance Strategies. Other seminars will include “Build your perfect events team” by George Sirius, CEO of Eventsforce Solutions. Event management consultant, Richard John, will present a personal and professional development seminar on “The success pie”. German language seminars will include a session from business advisor and mediator, Mathias Haas, who returns to IMEX by popular demand. ‘Germany’s most down to earth trend-watcher’s’ seminar for 2011 will be an examination of assumptions, proven facts and megatrends entitled “Knowing how the hare thinks”.

The IMEX partnership with new performance company, Meetings Mindset®, will be highly visible to buyers, exhibitors and visitors before, during and after the show. The Meetings Mindset® team will aim to show that the right pre-show preparation and post-show processes can make a huge difference to an individual’s productivity and business results. Onsite IMEX visitors will benefit from a series of multisensory experiences including tailored menus, lighting and room design intended to heighten performance. Other New Vision elements will include the IMEX Politicians Forum, which will welcome 40 political representatives this year. Meetings for Success, which specifically supports the educational and networking needs of corporate meeting planners is also being expanded. Further details will be announced nearer the show.

n New hot topic ‘campfires’ A new addition to the IMEX education programme will be a series of hot topic ‘campfires’. These 30 minute sessions will be available to just 10 or 12 visitors offering an intimate setting to discuss subject matter with experts and peers. Campfire sessions will offer fast-track introductions to fundamental business

n Adding value

In an effort to add further value to IMEX online, a series of 30-60 second training videos will be introduced on the IMEX website. These have been crafted to help exhibitors, buyers and intermediaries make the most of the many unique business improvement, marketing and communication tools available to them.

More new initiatives include an expanded partnership with online company, i-Meet, which will allow all registered exhibitors, hosted buyers and visitors to use the international social networking portal to exchange contacts and network in advance of the exhibition. n New app and QR codes A new mobile phone app, developed in partnership with Meeting Professionals International (MPI) and QuickMobile, will allow iPhone, BlackBerry and Android smartphone users to access additional information about the show plus have a direct link to their IMEX online diaries as well as links to the IMEX social media pages. IMEX has also been quick to develop QR codes (also known as 2-D codes or mobile tags) which the show organisers will use to share event and seminar information at point of delivery and also on information boards around the halls. The codes are easy to use and most smartphone users can download a free QR reader from their provider or apps store. This year hosted buyers will also have access to free wi-fi throughout the halls as a result of a new service courtesy of Destination Frankfurt Rhein-Main.

Arrive at Frankfurt Airport, just 15 km from Messe Frankfurt.

An airport shuttle will be running during the exhibition to Messe Frankfurt and will take approximately 20 minutes. To take a taxi to Messe Frankfurt, tell the driver to take you to “Messe Frankfurt, Hall 8”. The taxi fare should be between €2530 and it will take between 20 and 30 minutes. To take the S-Bahn, follow the signs in the airport terminal to Regionalbahnhof/Regional Station and go to platform 1 and take any train to Frankfurt’s main train station (they all go via the main train station). At the main train station take the S-Bahn, either line S3, S4, S5 or S6, usually from platform 104, and get off two stops later at the stop marked Messe, entrance Torhaus. Follow the signs to Hall 8.

Please note that Frankfurt is located within an “environmental zone”. So you need an emissions sticker for your car in order to drive into the city. n■ Follow the “Messe” signs and take the exit marked “Westkreuz Frankfurt”. f you plan to travel within Frankfurt throughout your stay and are interested in reduced admissions to various places of interest in Frankfurt we recommend you buy the Frankfurt Card, either at the airport’s hotel reservation counter in Terminal 1, Arrival Hall B or from the Tourist Information Office at the main train station, or from Tourist Information Römer, next to City Hall. Train tickets for one-way fares, daily tickets and group tickets are available from the RMV ticket vending machines. How the internet is changing our experience.

B

esides a loss of control, digital networking primarily means that the perception of the world is changing. Augmented reality is only one part of that – a fundamental shift is actually taking place. Social media

contribute towards how events are perceived in the run-up phase, during implementation and above all afterwards, for example. What friends write on Facebook is a more important assessment than any article in the media.

“I think the impact on society and especially on coming generations will be just as revolutionary as if printed books, telephone and television had all been invented simultaneously.”* And what does this mean for the event industry? An interview with

GCB: That concept is called Webciety, which is a neologism combining “Web” and “Society”.

the blogger, author and internet consultant Sascha Lobo (36). German Convention Bureau (GCB): Sascha Lobo, you have primarily become known to the general public as a blogger and digital Bohemian. What news do you have for visitors to IMEX? Sascha Lobo: I will talk about the current status of the internet for the event industry. GCB: Are you familiar with the event industry? Lobo: Yes, I have been working together with Deutsche Messe for years, and in the course of that I have also developed and marketed a new concept relating to the theme of integrated communications.

Lobo: Exactly. Webciety is a kind of walk-in internet that we implemented two years ago for the first time at the Cebit trade fair. That is how I picture the internet working at an event.

Where is the journey headed in your opinion? Lobo: You have to prepare for the fact that events in particular are a topic that will be discussed on all social media platforms before, during and afterwards, because an event is

an emotional thing for many people. And that those discussions will also determine what non-participants think about the corresponding event. So three or four negative comments can quite easily give the whole thing a completely different spin. For example, when I attend an event with an agenda including presentations first and a party afterwards, then first of all I always check out what my friends who are already there are saying.Via Facebook or Twitter, for example. Only then do I decide whether I want to go or not. Then I know if the presentations are worth it, for instance. Or whether the beer has already run out and everybody has migrated on to a pub.

Lobo: At Cebit 2009 we set up a Twitter Wall like that for the first time. Meta comments from the audience were visible to everyone on a large screen behind the stage, as well as to the speaker on a small screen right in front of him. In this way, people can contribute to a discussion without disrupting the presentation. For instance, a comment stating that certain aspects have not been addressed yet. Or specific questions are asked. In short: The audience can exert a substantial influence on the presentation. And the speaker can fulfil expectations in real time. That is real communication between stage and audience by digital means.

GCB: That means that the organiser is under a lot more pressure. What can be done in order to avoid having negative criticism crop up?

GCB: In your opinion, what will the future of the event industry be like?

Lobo: There isn’t any secret foolproof recipe for that. What is important is for the organiser to have the basic know-how, for him to take new media options seriously, because they cannot be handled as an afterthought - just in passing. And for him to be able to react flexibly. That is the most important set of attributes needed for dealing with social media. And that is actually not all that different from handling an event itself: Organising a good event requires substantial time and effort. GCB: More and more often speakers are asking their audience to already twitter their comments during the presentation so that they are visible to everybody. But why take the detour via the internet? Isn’t it much more efficient to tell the speaker one’s opinion directly? Isn’t everything else just pure hype?

Lobo: A digital society is evolving overall. The intensity with which Facebook affects people’s lives alone is a clear indication of that: 50 % of all residents in the USA are registered on Facebook, in Switzerland the proportion is 34 %, in Norway 60 %, in Iceland it is even over 70 %. In that country there have even been tongue-in-cheek suggestions about making Facebook a digital residents’ registration office. Because with the exception of the very young and the very old, everybody is on it. GCB: What are the Facebook numbers like in Germany? Lobo: Today about 20 % – with an upwards tendency: Every month one million additional new users are added. So the event industry has to acknowledge that events no longer take place only in the world that it is familiar with, but also in the digital world – where other rules apply.

If it takes that into account, it can play a role in influencing that world. Proactively. GCB: But unlike you, many event organisers as well as guests are not part of the generation of “Digital Natives”. Lobo: Using social media is not a question of age – it’s a question of attitude. GCB: Despite all the euphoria and the sense of a new era dawning: Does dealing with social media also have negative consequences ? Lobo: At present fears and concerns still predominate: a fear of the loss of privacy, loss of control, loss of data – a fear of the new as a whole. But some fears create false priorities. GCB: For example? Lobo: Irrational fears, like the fear of choking when flying. The only antidote that can help is enlightenment and information. GCB: So you cannot think of anything negative? Lobo: Energy consumption is increasing drastically. We will have to try to minimise that. But all in all, in my view the positive potential of Facebook, Twitter & Co. predominates. Used correctly, the internet can improve the world. And I am sure that young people in Arabian countries share that opinion. GCB: Mr. Lobo, thank you very much for talking to us.

English Seminar: All around the world How to work with Germans

T

he esteem of every single client stands or falls with knowledge about the respectively appropriate form of communication. Essential cultural differences do exist, especially in the case of foreign guests. This presentation raises awareness for appropriate, self-assured handling of international contacts. he new trade show for the worldwide meetings, events and incentive travel industry; the inaugural IMEX America will take place October 11-13, 2011 at the Sands Expo which is connected to the show’s Headquarters Hotel, the Venetian/Palazzo. From 7 to 11 July 2011 the highly diverse destination Berlin will once again delight decisionmakers from the MICE industry. The international workshop is already being staged for the sixth time by the Berlin Convention Office of visitBerlin. It event is under the patronage of Berlins Governing Mayor, Klaus Wowereit. In order to present Germany’s leading convention metropolis in a personal and individual fashion, participants already have an opportunity to chat to local providers on the “Meet Professionals Day”. Representatives of Berlin hotels, convention centres and unusual locations are on hand to promote their special offerings. The “Meet Berlin Day” in turn is completely devoted to the city on the river Spree. They attracted 8.26 million guests to Berlin (2008: 8.15 million). The share of international visitors amounted to 17%. Berlin: Future-proof event location The German capital continues to gain in attractiveness as a location for large-scale events. By the end of 2013 a new congress and trade fair centre will be built on the site of the former Deutschland Halle. Between 2014 and 2016 it will replace the International Congress Centrum ICC Berlin, which will be completely closed and refurbished during that time. With the reopening of the ICC Berlin, Messe Berlin will then have almost the double convention capacities. At present more than 530 events with around 240,000 participants per year take place in the congress area of Messe Berlin. A decisive share in the future development of the flight services to and from Berlin will be accounted for by the new capital airport Berlin

Brandenburg International BBI. It is currently built on the site of Schönefeld Airport. The latter will be replaced by the BBI Airport in the same way as Tegel Airport and the already closed Tempelhof Airport. The opening of the new airport is scheduled for 3 June 2012. In addition, a shuttle service will be provided between BBI and the Berlin main station. It will take passengers every 20 minutes to the airport and/ or the city centre.

For the fourth time already Germany has defended its number one position. Compared to last year Germany has even climbed three per cent. The UK came second (58 %). Free Maritim app for Apple iPhones and Google Android

he Maritim Hotelgesellschaft has created an app for Apple’s iPhone and Google Android that is available free of charge. Download now! The clever software makes it possible for users to connect with Maritim’s hotels worldwide while underway so they can check current rates, accommodation availability and make bookings. The app also provides users with a range of information on the requested hotel including room categories, available guest services, F & B possibilities and conference facilities. The 3D photo gallery affords users a visual tour of each of the group’s 51 hotels around the world. Addressing the

international nature of both Maritim and its guests, the app comes in two languages: English and German. Each hotel can be found on a global map by entering the city or the address. The nearest Maritim hotel can also be simply located and navigated to via the GPS function. “It’s a case of maintaining our leading position through technology.” says Maritim’s CEO, Gerd Prochaska. “The new app also makes it possible to view and give hotel feedback over the TripAdvisor platform. The app is also being recompiled for Samsung bada. It will be made available as soon as it’s passed the testing phase.” Those that download the free

n Mannheim celebrates “autosymphonic” – multimedia artwork for all senses The motorcar was invented here, in the South-German city of Mannheim. Reason enough to celebrate the anniversary on September 10, 2011 with a unique event – the premiere of a symphony that has been composed specifically for the occasion: the “autosymphonic”. The most extraordinary thing is that approximately 80 automobiles from every era are involved. It’s the world’s first “automobile orchestra”. Right in the center of the town, one of the most beautiful and best preserved Art Nouveau parks in Europe – the Friedrichsplatz – will be transformed into a giant concert arena for one night only. The cars will be played like instruments. The rhythmic sounds of windshield wipers, clattering trunk lids and the deep sounds of engines will all be channeled into the symphony. Automotive sounds, an orchestra, a choir and language will all

combine with images, videos and lasers to form a huge multimedia symphony. “This will be an event of an international standard that will take place only once and only in Mannheim,” stresses Michel Maugé, Managing Director of m:con. ermany is a country of women’s football! After hosting the 2006 FIFA World Cup™, Germany holds the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011™ in nine venues. The opening ceremony and the Opening Match will take place in Berlin on 26 June. The Final takes place on 17 July in Frankfurt. “Fans in Germany can look forward to a joyful and topquality festival of world football. Just like the fairytale in summer 2006, the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011™ will further enhance the image and reputation of our nation,” commented DFB President Dr. Theo Zwanziger.

16 countries will be participating in the tournament, with 32 matches scheduled. The ball will get rolling in a total of nine cities. The preliminary round will be played in four groups (A, B, C, D). Five World Cup titles have been awarded in women’s football to date, the first in China in 1991: The World Champion at that time was the USA. Besides the USA, Germany has won the FIFA Women’s World Cup twice, and Norway was the winner once (1995). The team of the German Football Association is also the defending champion – in 2007 they bested China 2:0 in the final.
