Key sectors of expertise as MICE driver Germany scores points as an international event trailblazer with its specialist expertise or years, Germany has earned top marks in international rankings as an event destination. For the eleventh time in succession the popular convention country is in first place in Europe and second place worldwide in the current global ranking list of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA). To an increasing extent, conference and convention organisers decide in favour of Germany as an event location because of its well-developed key sectors of expertise - in addition to its outstanding price-performance ratio, its advantageous hub status in the heart of Europe, sustainability aspects that are put into practice in real life, pioneering technology, the quality and capacity of event facilities as well as the diversified range of options that the regions offer for fringe event programmes.

Regional competence profile Financial services in Frankfurt, medicine in Nuremberg, technology in the Rhineland, automotive industry in Southern Germany, logistics in Hamburg, environment and energy in Berlin – some industries have established

themselves in certain metropolises and regions, thus shaping the respective regional competence profile. But when they are examined more closely, metropolises and urban agglomerations frequently reveal several key sectors of expertise in addition to the core competence areas with which those destinations are associated at first glance. Other industries, for example agriculture, are well-established throughout Germany. Furthermore, a large number of scientific research facilities, associations and institutions all over the country constitute an extensive network of experts. Among other things, Germany offers an ideal setting for events with a thematic focus in the area of Technology and Innovation: In 2014 more than 30 percent of the major international conventions fell into the category of that field of competence. Over 20 percent of the international association conventions in Germany focussed on themes from the Medicine and Health field of competence. In addition, Germany’s expertise in the Energy and Environment

sector is of international significance – that industry accounted for almost 10 percent of the association conventions. In the meantime, numerous international event organisers are taking advantage of the respective regional competence in specific industries so as to select their conference location not merely according to purely requirement-related factors such as accessibility, conference and hotel capacity, but above all to focus special attention on specialist relevance. The regional networking of entrepreneurial economic and innovative power, visionary pioneering spirit in the scientific and research segments, institutional presence as well as commitment on the part of pioneers, entrepreneurs and investors produces a valuable competence cocktail with addedvalue content for conferences, conventions and events. For example, conference planners are exploiting specialist potential at the event destination more and more – a potential that had not been used very much previously - either through guest appearances by local experts,

presentations of locally based companies relevant for the specialist area or integration of plant tours and visits to research institutes into the programme of fringe events. In this context, the primary focus is the interactive transfer of knowledge and intensive exchange of ideas with practical relevance. •

When events meet german expertise Transport, Logistics and Transportation Medicine and Healthcare Chemical and Pharmaceutical Energy and Environment Technology and Innovation EST 2015 – Energy, Science and Technology – International Conference & Exhibition in Karlsruhe

O

ne prime example of successful competence transfer between a region and an event is the convention “EST 2015 – Energy, Science and Technology – International Conference & Exhibition”, which was held at the convention centre Kongresszentrum Karlsruhe from May 20th to 22nd, 2015. One of the city’s most important and promising clusters is energy research and the energy industry. At the convention, 600 participants from 35 countries came together and conferred on the subjects relating to renewable energies, energy

efficiency and systems as well as storage and networks. EST served as a platform for presenting the latest research results and energy system developments. Representatives of the city and experts from the region as well as research scientists and engineers from all over the world networked there and discussed the most important current challenges that energy research is facing. Britta Wirtz, Managing Director of the Karlsruhe trade fair company Karlsruher

Financial Services Messe- und Kongress-GmbH (KMK), is gratified by the positive response to the premiere of the event: “Ideas forge ties – and the basic idea of our company has decisively shaped the concept of the EST convention. The topic of energy was approached from an interdisciplinary standpoint. Scientists and researchers as well as engineers and entrepreneurs gave lectures – a successful contribution from KMK towards the 300th birthday of the City of Karlsruhe. For three days, we made the city the epicentre of the world of energy research.”

in Germany. That is a significant economic factor for hotels and convention facilities as well as for ancillary service providers in the MICE value added chain. In order to achieve a perfect conference and convention scenario, large amounts are regularly invested in destinations and infrastructure, in technology and equipment, in security and sustainability as well as other components, for example. In Germany as a convention location, ideal general conditions for specialist thematic relevance exist primarily due to six fields of competence:

The convention programme included over 180 lectures by top people from research and science, including well-known speakers such as the CEO of Daimler AG, Dr. Dieter Zetsche, who gave a public lecture for an audience of 800 on the subject of “New Energy: The Second Invention of the Automobile”. Numerous speakers from Karlsruhe and the surrounding area effectively showcased industry-specific regional competence with reference to the energy industry.

1. Transport, Logistics and Transportation 2. Medicine and Healthcare 3. Chemical and Pharmaceutical 4. Energy and Environment 5. Technology and Innovation 6. Financial Services

After its successful premiere, the EST convention scheduled to be held at two-year intervals. More information can be accessed at www.est-conference.com. Another example of the successful integration of industry-specific regional competence in Germany was the convention “EAN 2015 – European Academy of Neurology” with roughly 5,000 participants in June 2015 in Berlin. The capital city impressively demonstrated that outstanding expertise and networking also contribute towards a successful specialist event in the medical sector. Hamburg has its strengths in the area of logistics, but it also possesses the highest level of competence in the area of technology and innovation. In the autumn of 2015, the Hanseatic City will welcome roughly 1,200 participants to the “IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems – IROS”, also integrating regional expertise.

Ideal general conditions Every year roughly three million events with about 360 million event guests take place

2 – MEETINGS MADE IN GERMANY – 2/2015

The presence of leading experts from those areas offers international event planners one-of-a-kind competence in business and science which they can exploit for events. For example, numerous specialists are available to international event participants as key note speakers in Germany. Moreover, additional participants, supporters and exhibitors from the sphere of competence can be won over for an event. Guests and hosts benefit equally from the resulting knowledge transfer, valuable inspiration and new contacts. The GCB YouTube Channel vividly summarises the advantages that international event organisers can enjoy at the MICE location Germany by integrating the key sectors of expertise. • ˜˜ www.gcb.de/en/key-industries/ key-industries-in-germany

Leipzig, the medicine location: groundbreaking research and a popular centre for the exchange of knowledge This year Leipzig is demonstrating its reputation as an important location for medicine in Germany with two impressive highlights. The Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig is celebrating its 600th anniversary, and the 3,000th stem cell transplant at the University Hospital of Leipzig (UKL) represents an important milestone in the battle against leukemia. A look at the convention calendar confirms the great role that the key sector of expertise revolving around medicine and bioscience plays for Leipzig. 600 years of history - a foundation for the future This year it was exactly 600 years ago that the Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig was founded. That makes it the second oldest educational institution for medicine in Germany that has been teaching continuously. With its 21 institutes, centres and departments, it is one of the largest research facilities of its kind Germany-wide. At the same time, it has shaped an entire city district in the southeastern part of the centre of Leipzig with the medical quarter: as a modern educational and research centre, as one of the largest employers in the region and as a host for international specialist conferences. New findings from cutting-edge research are transferred to medical practice at the University Hospital of Leipzig (UKL). Every year the 27 clinics and polyclinics as well as eight institutes with over 6,000 employees treat and care for roughly 350,000 people as inpatients and out-patients. Numerous other facilities, such as the cardiology centre Herzzentrum Leipzig, the City Hospital St. Georg, which was already founded in 1212, the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI as well as the interdisciplinary BIO CITY LEIPZIG illustrate the high medical quality of the location.

Stem cell therapy: Worldwide focus on Leipzig The front-ranking medical competence of Leipzig is evident not only in the number of renowned facilities, but above all in the first-class results in research and therapy that attract attention internationally. For example, the 3,000th bone marrow transplant on a leukemia patient was performed at the University Hospital of Leipzig (UKL) in 2015. The procedure was successfully performed under the direction of Prof. Dr. Dietger Niederwieser, Director of the Department for Hematology and Medical Oncology at UKL and simultaneously President of the Worldwide Network for Blood & Marrow Transplantation (WBMT). That event, which proves that UKL is one of the leading medical facilities in that field, was recognised with a celebratory symposium with international experts in attendance.

Quite logically, the excellent reputation of Leipzig as a centre of medicine and of the individuals working actively there makes itself felt in the convention calendar of the city with the largest population in Saxony. For example, in 2016 Leipzig will be hosting the Annual Conference of the German, Austrian and Swiss Societies for Hematology and Medical Oncology for the second time; more than 4,000 participants are expected to attend. Among other things, awarding the convention to Leipzig is recognition of the competence of the hematologists working there under Prof. Dr. Niederwieser.

The newest member of do-it-at-leipzig.de is KONGRESSHALLE am Zoo, a modern conference centre in a historical venue right in the city centre of Leipzig which is operated by the experienced team of Congress Center Leipzig. Even before it opened, international and national specialist societies from the fields of neurology, cardiology, paediatrics and bioscience, among others, already indicated their interest in holding conferences amid

Dietger Niederwieser is one of almost 30 physicians and scientists who were honoured as “Ambassadors of the Convention City Leipzig”. As “ambassadors” they are committed to doing outstanding work on behalf of the development of Leipzig as a convention destination and have attracted several important conferences to the city in their respective specialist fields. One of the typical characteristics of Leipzig is that active players and service providers in the convention sector are networked particularly well and closely with the university, with scientific institutes as well as representatives of important industry clusters. The pacemaker in this context is the initiative called “Feel the spirit … do-it-at-leipzig.de”. That strong network has brought together almost 50 companies, such as convention centres, event locations, hotels as well as agencies and

remen is well-known and well-reputed in the aeronautical engineering and space technology sector – all over the world. Numerous large corporations and SME sector companies in the industry are based in the Hanseatic City of Bremen and the surrounding the region. For example, the Columbus module which is manufactured in Bremen by Airbus Defence & Space has been an integral part of the International Space Station ISS for five years now, and the US space capsule “Orion” is equipped with a service module that is made in Bremen. The Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity (ZARM) operates Europe’s only drop tower for weightlessness experiments in Bremen, OHB-System AG is closely linked with the development area of the European Galileo Programme and just recently the “Rosetta” space probe flew to the comet “Churyumov–Gerasimenko” thanks to the participation of Bremen-based scientists. More and more internationally oriented events - such as exhibitions and conventions revolving around aerospace-related themes - are also attracting participants from all over the world to the city on the Weser. Thus, the city is continuing to establish itself as an aerospace location of international renown.

years alone: The “International Symposium on NDT in Aerospace” has extended an invitation for November 16th to 18th, 2015, in Bremen. At the same time, “SPACE Tech Expo Europe” in combination with “AEROSPACE Electrical Systems Expo Europe” will take place from November 17th to 19th, 2015, at the trade fair facility Messe Bremen at the Bürgerweide site. The international specialist convention “RADECS” will be held in Bremen from September 19th to 23rd, 2016. The Bremen Convention Bureau of the tourism office Bremer Touristik-Zentrale (BTZ) will provide liaison & support for all three events.

The Drop Tower of the Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity (ZARM): a unique facility in Europe, the drop tower makes it possible to conduct experiments on earth under brief conditions of weightlessness.

Meeting place for specialist conventions Three important events in the industry are scheduled to be held in Bremen in the next two

The organisers deliberately selected Bremen as the location for this trade fair, which has regularly been held in the USA up to now: Bremen and the surrounding area constitute one of Europe’s most productive regions in the aerospace industry, with more than 12,000 employees at over 140 operating sites and 20 research facilities. Furthermore, Bremen is a city characterised by short distances: the excellent connection between the airport and the city centre makes is especially easy for international exhibitors and visitors to reach the event venue.

Gordon McHattie, Event Director of “SPACE Tech Expo Europe”, explains why Bremen was chosen as the destination: “Northern Germany has a long history of aerospace and space industry excellence, and a deep-rooted connection with an array of European centres of excellence. Offering convenient access served by modern road and rail networks, and with an airport just 6 km from the Bremen Messe, connectivity in conjunction with a backdrop of technical excellence is key in the selection of Bremen as the inaugural host of Space Tech Expo Europe.” As an important German location for space technology, Bremen is also the first choice for the first German RADECS conference (“Radiation Effects on Components and Systems”) in the 25-year convention history. The theme of the international specialist event, which has already been held in Paris, Oxford, Sevilla and Biarritz, among others: the effects of cosmic radiation on electronic systems in space craft. Every year about 450 experts get together in order to compare notes. ˜˜ www.bremen-tourism.de/conventions

ith 600,000 visitors the Hamburg Cruise Days festival has become an integral part of Hamburg’s programme of public events. For the first time this year, the City of Hamburg will bundle its cruise-themed events and invite the broader public as well as industry experts to join a ten-day programme based on the claim “Hamburg welcomes you on board”. With the launch of this campaign Hamburg also aims to expand its B2B portfolio. Trade events bring international decision-makers and investors to Hamburg and create new networking and business opportunities. This does not only benefit regional stakeholders from the cruise-related industries – most notably the Maritime Cluster “Northern Germany” – but also businesses from the hospitality and retail sectors.

Europe, Hamburg is moving even closer into the focus of the global maritime industries. The leading European trade fair Seatrade Europe will open its doors from 9 to 11 September 2015. The travel sales event fvw Cruise Live Congress was first held during the Hamburg Cruise Days 2014; this year the congress will take place on 11 September.

Accolades for the Lufthansa Group Airlines of the Lufthansa Group receive five commendations in the World Airline Awards - Austrian Airlines and Lufthansa are honoured for service on board and on the ground

T

his year the airlines of the Lufthansa Group have once again been commended with a number of World Airline Awards. The awards are based on the results of the world’s largest customer survey in the airline industry, which is conducted annually by the quality institute Skytrax: Over 18 million air passengers from more than 160 countries evaluate roughly 200 airlines worldwide. Austrian Airlines was commended for its service on the ground and in the air with a first place ranking in the category “Best Airline Staff in Europe”. In addition, the airline was also ranked in first place in the category “Best Business Class Onboard Catering”. The decisive factors for its top ranking were the catering options offered in Business Class on long-haul flights including the exquisitely sophisticated meals from DO&CO, the Viennese Coffee House Service and cooks on board. In the past three years Lufthansa has invested more than three billion Euros in equipment and fittings for its cabins and lounges as well as in service, and those investments have definitely paid off. At the awards in Le Bourget near Paris, the airline earned top honours in the categories “Best Airline Transatlantic”, “World’s Best First Class Airline Lounge” and “Best Airline in Western Europe”. Lufthansa is currently equipping the over 100 aircraft in its long-haul fleet with its exclusive First Class, the new Business Class and Premium Economy Class. Furthermore, in the meantime Lufthansa now offers the FlyNet broadband internet option on board all of its long-haul aircraft. MEETINGS MADE IN GERMANY – 2/2015 – 7

New venues for meetings and conferences in Germany German meeting and conference suppliers are investing large amounts of money in expanding their infrastructures. A range of new meeting and conference venues have become available to event planners in 2015 or are due to open in the next few months. World Conference Center Bonn

Estrel Berlin

A new Main Building was opened at the World Conference Center Bonn (WorldCCBonn) in early June 2015. Following the construction work and investments totalling approx. EUR 100 million in Bonn’s former government district, the conference centre is now truly unique, with historic buildings, modern architecture, pleasant lawns, relaxing views of the Rhine, high-quality facilities and state-of-the-art equipment for events of all kinds. Together with the Waterworks and the Plenary Building, the new Main Building can accommodate up to 5,000 people and is suitable for events of all types. Meeting and conference planners can make flexible use of these facilities. The large hall, for instance, can be expanded, and the Main Building can be booked in combination with the Plenary Building. In addition, there are four modular conference rooms with separate foyers. ˜˜ www.worldccbonn.com

Berlin’s broad portfolio of meeting and conference venues will have gained another facet in autumn 2015, after the completion of the second complex at Estrel Berlin. Convention Hall II, which cost approx. EUR 30 million to complete, is situated right next to the existing Congress & Messe Center and has two event halls, accommodating up to 5,200 persons on 10,000 square metres. In all, Estrel Berlin will have 25,000 square metres of event space with state-of-the-art facilities, suitable for conventions, galas, special trade shows and concerts with sufficient capacity for up to 12,000 attendees.

KONGRESSHALLE am Zoo Leipzig

The complex includes the Estrel Hotel with 1,125 rooms, the Estrel Convention Hall I and 60 further conference rooms of different sizes as well as the Estrel Festival Center. Estrel Berlin is already one of Europe’s most popular venues, featuring some 1,800 meetings, conventions, galas, trade shows, exhibitions and other events each year. ˜˜ www.estrel.com

TITANIC Business Berlin

From autumn 2015 onwards event planners will be able to use KONGRESSHALLE am Zoo Leipzig, a state-of-the-art venue for meetings and conventions in a historic setting. After extensive restoration and reconstruction since 2009 – totalling approx. EUR 37 million – the 19th-century building has now been restored to new splendour, providing a perfect ambience for events in the heart of the city. It is run by Congress Center Leipzig (CCL), a company in the Leipziger Messe Group. The historic building was first opened under the name of Gesellschaftshaus am Zoo (Society House by the Zoo). It was subsequently used as a cultural meeting centre as well as for concerts of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra for over 80 years. When restoration has been concluded, the convention centre will have 15 modern, well-equipped rooms and halls with different architectural features and capacities between 10 and 1,200 people, as well as foyers, lounges and an exhibition area. It will be suitable for conventions, meetings, corporate events, receptions and evening functions. Situated directly next to Leipzig Zoo, one of the most prestigious and innovative zoos in the world on account of its scientific emphasis, the KONGRESSHALLE is ideally suited as a destination for scientific conventions on a wide range of topics. ˜˜ www.kongresshalle.com

Another top-of-the-range venue for business events in Berlin is set to open at the end of 2015: the new TITANIC Business Hotel on Berlin’s centrally situated Chausseestrasse. It will be the third venue of the Turkish-German TITANIC Group in Germany’s capital. The hotel has a total event space of 2,500 square metres for meetings and other events, with a ballroom of 1,800 square metres and 15 further conference rooms with state-of-the-art equipment. The hotel, which specialises in bookings for events and conventions, has 389 rooms, including 14 suites. Business travellers benefit from a 3,000 square metre spa and gym complex, including an authentic Turkish hammam and an indoor swimming pool. Moreover, the new hotel welcomes its international business guests with state-of-the-art equipment in all rooms, an oriental flair and a variety of bars and restaurants. ˜˜ www.titanic-hotels.com
